5 Sussex Street - 1932

Halfway up the street, with the corner of Sussex Terrace just visible at the extreme left. Further up on the same side was Apollo Terrace, which was later completely demolished, and beyond can be seen council houses built on what was known as Tarner’s Land.

This was a large plot of ground between Sussex Street and Richmond Street, owned for many years by the Tarner family who lived nearby in St John’s Lodge, Tilbury Place. In 1932, the Corporation built three new roads of council houses on this land. The old houses here seen on both sides of the street were demolished in 1938/1939.

hanover Meet local Hanoverian Paul Bramhall...

Hanover Person... Paul Bramhall Hanover’s Cycling Window Cleaner You may have spotted Paul (pictured) pedalling around Hanover and wondered what it’s like being a window cleaner on two wheels?

Originally from Dover, he moved to Brighton in 1997 and hasn’t looked back. He loves it here. He describes Hanover as “a bit more hippyish and spiritual than most areas”. About 30% of his work is around Hanover and Elm Grove.

Being outdoors is not all fun in wet and windy weather. Wind can wreak havoc with his trailer. Ideal window cleaning weather is spring and autumn - a pleasant temperature, but not too hot as direct sunlight messes up the window drying process.

Paul previously worked as a nurse but prefers the outdoors, fresh (quite) air and being his own boss. He wanted to make as little impact on the environment as possible, so he cycles and carries his own water (30 litres for the whole day which is low usage for window cleaning). However he had to draw the line at some of the eco cleaning brands that “just don’t work on outdoor windows!” He clearly takes a lot of pride in doing a good job. Paul carries and uses a long reach pole which stretches to two storeys - not just because a ladder and a bike would be tricky, but because there have been fatalities in recent times. He gets lots of photo requests and the inevitable jokes from passers-by….

“If I had £1 for every time Joe Public calls out “missed a bit”, I’d be a rich man!” A close second is “Do you play the ukulele?!” - an interesting long-standing association with window cleaning in people’s minds.

He says cycling feels pretty safe, thinks the new Vogue Gyratory is OK, but is not keen on Tenantry Down. His main gripe on the roads are people using mobile phones.

Paul is not the only cycling window cleaner in town, but he is the only one in Hanover and he can be contacted via Facebook (or paul-bramhall@sky.com). So if you pass him in Hanover, do say hello or check if he hasn’t missed a bit!! David Gibson

The trail is on for five weekends throughout May, starting on Saturday 30th April, and is a great day out for all the family, especially when combined with regular stops in Hanover’s great cafés and pubs. We would like to invite the children to submit drawings in response to the theme ‘Brighton Celebrates’. Drawings must be done on A4 paper and they must clearly write their name, age and school on the back. They will be judged in two categories: 5 years and under, and 6-10 years. The deadline for entries is Friday 22nd April and they can be handed in to Q Estate Agents at 195 Lewes Road. Entries will be judged by artists for the trail and the winners will have their work framed and exhibited in one of the Open Houses on the Hanover Trail and on the website www.hanoverartstrail.org.uk. Lastly, a great big thank you to all of our sponsors for this year’s trail. We couldn’t do it without you! The latest musings of Hanover Dad....

Hanover Dad... The Happiest Day of My Life

About six months ago whilst opening the post, my wife shouted “Yay!” – I became excited. “Finally,” I thought, “some random benefactor who has read Hanover Dad for the past six years has decided to gift me their entire estate, due to the literary joy I’ve brought them.” “What is it, darling?” I casually enquired. “It’s Camille and Jose, they’re getting married.” “Oh,” I said, crestfallen. “That’s great. Do I have to go?” My wife gave me the ‘look’ I’ve learned to dread and said, “Don’t start, I’m not having your usual nonsense about weddings, you’re coming and you’ll enjoy it.” You see the problem is, I don’t like weddings. I find them a bit boring, they always go on slightly too long. I even thought my own wedding could have done with winding up a few hours earlier (only joking honey, it was the happiest day of my life). I always do the same thing at weddings. I arrive, I get a bit bored and think to myself, “I know, to keep myself interested and give your big day the credence it deserves, I’m going to get as outrageously drunk as I can, as quickly as possible.” I have a poor track record at weddings. To date, through following this tactic, my wedding contribution to several friends’ nuptials has included staging a breakdancing competition, spilling two pints of lager across the dance floor, dancing inappropriately with the mother of the bride and telling someone’s nan that my name was Kanye West. This was made worse when, at breakfast the following morning in front of the bridal party, the nan said, “You enjoyed yourself last night, didn’t you, Kanye?” Anyway, the big day for Camille and Jose came and went, and you know what, I actually enjoyed it! This was because the service was over in 15 minutes, they fed us continually, flew through the speeches and

Darren Clarke

formalities and genuinely made the day as relaxed as possible. This meant that for once I didn’t embarrass myself. I did stand on a chair briefly and try to impress people by showing them how much confetti I could eat, but I think that went down quite well on the whole. My lovely wife however, who was clearly thrown by my good behaviour, took it upon herself to behave like me. I’d love to tell you all about it here, but I only intend to get married once in my life. hanover The third in a new series of reports from all Hanover local councillors...

Councillor Report from David Gibson

I have lived for the last 20 years in Islingword Road and love Hanover life. After many years as a community activist and housing campaigner, I was inspired to stand as a councillor by the principled example of Caroline Lucas as a tireless voice for social and environmental issues. Since being elected in May, my efforts have been focused in two main areas: 1. Work with residents around community issues a. Community plan for parking and street improvements I continue to work with the Local Action Team to press for a proposal that is flexible and ensures more of the money raised will go to improving our streets. The first phase of council consultation on this begins in April. A controlled parking scheme will only go ahead in areas where a majority of residents are in favour. b. Petitioning to save our street sweeper Having collected signatures to save our road sweeper from cuts it now seems that the service is safe for the time being. (As is his unofficial lost soft toy rescue service!)

Artist/Illustrator

David with Leila and Ben on walkabout

c. Pressing for more accessibility for wheelchair users and safer roads in the ward I organised a walk around our area with a council road safety officer, a wheelchair user and representatives of the Queen’s Park Community Association. As a result we now have improved signage and road markings especially on the Pankhurst estate, although our requests for dropped kerbs for wheelchair users are on hold as the budget was frozen. I shall continue to press for its re-instatement to make the area more accessible for everyone. d. Work with older residents in Sidney Tidy House around cuts to social care Residents of this sheltered housing scheme have seen support cut back year on year, and many now find the support they were promised when they moved in has been taken away. I am meeting with residents to support their challenge to the funders and explore how to revive social activities. 2. Pressing for truly affordable housing As housing spokesperson and a member of the Living Rent campaign, I have secured media coverage to campaign for rent controls in the private sector. I have also secured a commitment from the council’s housing committee to look into developing new housing at cheaper “living” or social rents, rather than so-called “affordable rents” which are not “affordable” for the lowest 50% of household incomes in Brighton and Hove. Please do get in touch by email david.gibson@brighton-hove.gov.uk; phone 07985 878629 or drop in at the Green Party advice surgery 10.15-11.15am on the 2nd Saturday of every month at Elm Grove School.

A programme of public engagement on possible ways of changing Brighton & Hove’s secondary school admissions system is under way. The need for change has been triggered by rising demand for secondary school places, and also by the University of Brighton’s proposal to create a new secondary free school in the eastern central area of the city. As of September 2018 the projected rise in the number of secondary age pupils means that in some catchment areas there will be too many pupils for the places available. 107500N

The proposals being considered relate to community secondary schools and academies, as well as the proposed University of Brighton secondary free school. As faith schools, Cardinal Newman and the King’s School set their own arrangements. Schools, parents and other interested parties are invited to give their views on three different catchment area proposals:

Model A: each school to have its own catchment area Model B: the city to have four catchment areas, three with two schools in and one with three schools in Model C: each secondary school being part of a catchment area containing three schools.

Under Model A, residents of Hanover would be in a single catchment area for the proposed new University of Brighton free school, which is likely to be located in central-east Brighton. Model B would give Hanover residents a choice between Varndean School, Patcham High School and Brighton Aldridge Community Academy (BACA). Model C would see Hanover in a three-school catchment area for Dorothy Stringer, the new school and Longhill School.

The engagement exercise will seek residents’ views on whether to keep random allocation within catchment areas as the “tie-breaker” for oversubscribed schools, or to use home to school distance instead. Councillors are also looking to see whether they can make more schools more accessible to children from disadvantaged backgrounds. The chair of the council’s cross party school organisation working group is Cllr Daniel Chapman. He said: “We want to engage with people’s views on the general principles of how they think the catchment areas should work. The boundary lines indicated are suggestions at this stage. The feedback we get from this engagement exercise will help us draw up concrete proposals that will be the subject of a formal consultation process in the autumn.”

The latest article from Hanover Action, formerly known as HASL...

Health and Happiness One Planet Living in Hanover & Elm Grove This month, for Hanover Action’s principles of One Planet Living, we focus on health and happiness. World Health Day is on 7th April, and this year the topic is ‘Beat Diabetes’. For those of you who don’t know, diabetes is a lifelong condition where the person’s blood sugar level gets too high. 90% of people who suffer with diabetes have Type 2 where the pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin. Type 1 diabetes means that the pancreas doesn’t produce any insulin. For the many people that suffer with diabetes, they have to change their lifestyle, what they eat and how much exercise they do.

So how can you get healthy, stay happy and be good to the environment?

The answer is simple, if you travel to work by car or motorbike, try changing to a more sustainable form of transport such as taking the train, riding a bicycle, or walking. Exercising releases endorphins which help you to concentrate more and feel healthier, as well as reducing the risk of any health issues such as diabetes. But what about diet? We hear you say...

When it comes to diet, cutting out sugary and fatty foods is the best thing to do. Eating your “5 a day” in fruit and veg is a great way to start on your health kick; however, you must monitor the amount of fructose, a natural sugar found in some fruits, as this can also contribute to diabetes. You can help your local fruit and veg providers or even grow your own!

News on the parking consultation...

Consultation Date for Hanover Parking Scheme A date has been set to start asking residents for views on introducing controlled parking for the first time in the Hanover and Elm Grove areas of Brighton. Around 8,500 consultation forms are expected to drop on doormats for the survey, expected to start on April 4 and last to April 29.

The neighbourhood is now the only part of central Brighton without controlled parking. Locals complain the streets are consequently clogged with vehicles driven by commuters, tourists, shoppers and people from adjacent parking zones who do not wish to pay.

Extensive research by the Hanover & Elm Grove Local Action Team (HEGLAT) found most residents who responded to their survey were in favour of controls. Residents will be asked if they would like parking restrictions to operate all day, or for limited periods – or whether they want to continue with no controls at all. They will also be asked if they want any scheme to operate all week or Monday to Friday. Consultation was approved by the environment committee on January 19. More consultation would

be undertaken on the details later in the year, in any defined areas wanting a scheme. Following detailed designs any plan approved would be introduced in early 2017.

“Streets and neighbourhoods can be made more pleasant and safe with parking controls,” said committee chair Gill Mitchell. “That’s why recent surveys have shown almost 70 per cent of residents in areas with controls support them. There’s an unusual situation in Hanover where almost half the households have no car yet the place appears dominated by them. It’s up to residents, with or without cars, to make the decision.” LAT chair Chris Taylor said: “It is essential that as many residents respond as possible so that we can get an accurate feel for what the people of Hanover & Elm Grove really want to happen.”

News of a new service available locally...

Ultimate Lifestyle Therapy at New Fit

Ultimate Lifestyle Therapy was created when two friends, Dawn and Leila, combined their own personal and professional experience to address their health issues! Dawn, owner of New Dawn Boutique, developed a keen interest in nutrition after her son became ill 14 years ago; traditional methods and an undiagnosed condition caused much stress, concern and frustration, leading her to research other possible cures. This was when she realised the power of diet in the treatment of bowel disorders, food allergies and histamine-related conditions. Last year, Dawn became unwell with a skin condition for which the medical profession gave conflicting diagnoses. She was given various drugs to use; however, these made very little difference to the ongoing condition. Neither diet nor emotional stress were discussed, so Dawn delved back into her nutritional knowledge to make changes to her diet and lifestyle and her condition completely cleared up! Leila, a Life Coach, works between Brighton and her home in France, where she lives with her husband and three children. In her twenties, she was over-

weight and suffering from an autoimmune disease. Despite having a successful career as a probation officer and being a mother, she struggled with depression. After the birth of her second child in 2011, her autoimmune disease rendered her disabled. Breastfeeding and unable to take the strong immunosuppressant drugs offered to her, she sought a different way to return to health. Leila found that by eliminating certain foods and introducing others to her diet, she saw a marked improvement in her health and went into remission from her autoimmune disease. She has since built a successful coaching career and co-owns Ultimate Lifestyle Therapy and New Fit, with Dawn. Today Dawn and Leila help clients change their lives, offering packages that incorporate nutrition, fitness at New Fit and aesthetic treatments at New Dawn, all in the heart of Brighton.

This is the first in a series of articles looking at the superstitions of old Sussex...

Sussex Superstitions – Shape-Shifting Until 100 or so years ago some people, especially those living in rural areas, believed that a human with special powers could change into an animal. There are references to this as far back as the 12th century and it was mentioned frequently by witnesses in the 18th century. The hare was a great favourite of the witches. It was thought that, in the form of hares, they sucked cows’ udders in the night, leaving them dry for the morning’s milking. Sometimes they were held responsible for damage to crops. One old lady – so it was said - could change into a hare and often roamed attended by her own dogs – her ‘familiars’ perhaps. On one occasion, just by her cottage, a farmer’s dogs managed to bite the hare’s behind but then the fleeing animal slipped away down a cottage drain. When the farmer burst into the cottage, there was the old lady, in human form. There was no sign of any hare, though the farmer noticed that she was rubbing her behind.

Another time – and this is a creepy kind of tale – a man related how a cat was constantly coming into his garden and causing havoc. He seemed to think

that this invasion always occurred when his wife went a-shopping or a-visiting. One day, tired of the nuisance, the man took out his rifle and shot the cat in the leg. Shortly after this his wife came home from market and she was limping. She explained it away by telling him that she had fallen down. Poor chap, was this another example of a shape-changing witch being injured in her guise of an animal?

Such stories have the feel of rural myth about them and accounts of animals and injured witches are common throughout the British Isles and beyond into Europe and they were believed not only by the uneducated. A vicar’s wife wrote in her diary in the 1870s: ‘I have met with even educated persons who, if a hare were the first animal that crossed their path upon their leaving home, would turn back, regarding it as a warning.’ WH Johnson is the author of The Superstitions and Curious Beliefs of Old Sussex, an e-book available from Amazon.
