HOVE PARK PERSON: LAURA DWYER-SMITH Laura Dwyer-Smith lives in Hove Park Way and runs CAMEO (Come And Meet Each Other) in Bishop Hannington Church Hall, Nevill Avenue. How long have you lived in the Hove Park area? I have lived in the Hove Park area now for 18 years. I met my husband whilst at university in Canterbury. He was from Hove and I moved here when I finished my degree. What do you most like about living here? I love living in Hove, it has everything to offer. If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle then you can visit one of its beautiful parks in the area. On a sunny day a walk along Hove seafront is minutes away. Alternatively we have Brighton and all the vast array of shops and restaurants just up the road. Is there anything in the area you would like to change? The only thing that springs to mind about Hove that I would change would be to improve our parking. As time goes by, it gets harder and harder to get a space! How did the CAMEO club begin? For those who are unaware, CAMEO stands for Come And Meet Each Other and is a group that has been running at Bishop Hannington since 1982 when the Church Centre was built. It was started to reach out to people in the community and has been fulfilling that mission for over 30 years. On Thursday mornings people start to arrive for coffee/ biscuits and chat from around 9.45am and usually there are 50 plus men and women that attend. At 11am there will be a speaker, a quiz, music, a discussion or a members’ morning covering various topics to appeal to as many as possible for an hour. We also go out for an annual summer day trip and in the past we have visited various places including London, Portsmouth and

Guildford. Last month we had an outing to Kew Gardens which was a really lovely day. It’s an extremely diverse group and we love it that so many different people feel they want to be there on a Thursday morning. The team continue to work hard at providing a great environment for folks to come and meet each other week by week. Why don’t you pop in sometime soon? HOVE PARK Your monthly update from the Friends of Hove Park...

SUMMER IN HOVE PARK Hove Park is a popular location for outdoor activities, some more unusual than others. Ball games, tennis, running and cycling are expected sights and the outdoor gym equipment and climbing rocks are well used.

Outdoor fitness sessions take place all the year round, even sometimes after dark; and they are certainly much in evidence on sunny summer days. For those wanting less strenuous activities, picnics or just sitting watching the world go by are likely choices. There are also colourful displays of flowers to be enjoyed on a gentle stroll around the park. However some are more unexpected. An interesting activity is skateboard slaloming. I’d never thought of it as an activity until I saw the cones laid out and two skilled skateboarders negotiating them. Also unusual was the maker of large bubbles who kept children (and adults) enthralled by his amazing bubble shapes which covered a large area near the playground. Less welcome are the results of some activities - in terms of litter, dog mess, and damage to picnic tables from hot barbecues. The hot barbecue chars the table and sometimes molten plastic fuses onto the surface.

ed nd Fou

Most of the picnic tables around the park have been disfigured in this way, with those near the tennis courts particularly badly affected. Dog mess besides being extremely unpleasant can result in toxocariasis leading to eye disorders including blindness; other symptoms include nausea, asthma and epileptic fits. Toxocara eggs can survive for over two years. Litter is not only unsightly but can harm wildlife and the time spent clearing it leaves the park gardeners less time to keep our park beautiful. Finally, a date for your diaries. On National Play Day, Wednesday 5th August, the Brighton and Hove Playbus will be in Hove Park from 2-5pm providing a variety of play opportunities. The Park Rangers will have a toy making area. For further details of the Friends see our website: http://www.friendsofhovepark.org or our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/lovehovepark

HOVE PARK Introducing the next ‘healthy living’ article written by local personal trainer and nutrition adviser Mary Henderson...

THE GREAT OUTDOORS I had an incredible honeymoon in Australia recently. Naturally, as someone interested in healthy lifestyles, it was a brilliant chance to observe how they do things Down Under. Now I know I was on holiday and possibly thinking the outback was greener on the Aussie side, however, I was struck by the availability of free well-developed outdoor leisure spaces - picnic areas with free electric BBQs, guided walks with plaques about the local wildlife, gym equipment and playgrounds to excite even the biggest kid. And not just in touristy areas, but everywhere. Sitting indoors is just one of the various contributors to obesity and other chronic health conditions. Australia is far from escaping the obesity epidemic but, alongside the incessant public health messages, it is investing in practical solutions suited to their climate: shade sails, water refill stations, and cooling showers. Surely we can design something that could provide shelter and withstand the wind and rain. Yes, we have some playground and park facilities but not enough and nowhere near the standard in Oz, with weatherproofing factored into the design. We have had a recession but when times were good, where was this development? Why is this possible

in other countries but not here? I hope that money genuinely is the main factor why we aren’t keeping up – I would hate to think it was because we didn’t appreciate how much outdoor spaces enrich community life and support health and well-being. Where there’s a will, there’s solutions.

HOVE PARK Local resident Tony Pelling with stories from Goldstone Bottom...

TALES OF GOLDSTONE BOTTOM...TOP DOG We see hundreds of “top dogs” in our park each day, chasing excitedly after balls, birds, squirrels, cycles and jogging fitness-fanatics. I am well aware that every one of them is tops to its adoptive family as my own family very recently said farewell to our top dog, Dougal, after 14 happy years. But…… …..there is one Goldstone Bottom dog who achieved world fame by chasing hares and in that pursuit became undisputed top dog. Whelped in Ireland in May 1983, the brindle greyhound, Ballyregan Bob, was transferred by his owner to Hove twelve months later and put in the care of trainer George Curtis. Clearly he had pace but what of endurance and winning determination? What was his best distance? Was he the greyhound world’s Mo Farah or was he Usain Bolt? In the period until Bob was old enough to race, George set about answering these questions. Of course some experimentation was necessary and in his early races the speedy young dog managed only some creditable 4th, 3rd and 2nd places, but once George had determined that he had the pace and stamina to tackle the longer distances his winning streak began. Many of Bob’s wins were at the Hove Greyhound Stadium but he also raced at other major UK tracks at Wembley, Wimbledon, Hackney, Romford and Walthamstow. No matter where he raced he won, and often in record time. One wit was moved to quip “wherever he goes, so too do the track records”. He just couldn’t stop winning and towards the end of 1985 he notched up 20 consecutive wins to beat the UK record previously held by Westpark Mustard. It was at this point that Australian TV dubbed him “The Flying Machine”. Other countries were starting to take notice too, as the world record of 31 consecutive

wins held by the American dog Joe Dump looked under threat. Ballyregan Bob came back to his home track here in Goldstone Bottom to record his 32nd consecutive win on 9th December 1986 and become the new world record-holder. Many of this wonderful dog’s races can still be seen on YouTube. He has been fêted in numerous ways: the accompanying photo shows his statue by local sculptor James Osborne, still in pride of place at his home track: he was guest of honour at the commissioning of the Royal Navy ship HMS Pursuer whose badge included a greyhound. After his death in 1994 Bob was exhibited in the Natural History Museum at Tring. From 48 starts Ballyregan Bob amassed 42 wins, 32 of them consecutively. Worthy of the title,“Top Dog”? You bet! HOVE PARK Here we bring you some of the background behind local landmark West Blatchington Windmill...

WEST BLATCHINGTON WINDMILL Built circa 1823 on a tall, pre-existing flint and brick tower, West Blatchington Windmill in Holmes Avenue, Hove, is one of England’s most unusual and attractive “smock” mills. Six-sided instead of the conventional eight, much of the original machinery remains intact, augmented by a fascinating collection of other milling and agricultural artefacts and photographs. Beautifully depicted in a painting by John Constable on 5th November 1825, she provided the flour and animal feeds for Court Farm, which was leased from the Abergavenny Estates. Following a disastrous storm, she ceased work in 1897 and along with adjacent land was purchased by Hove Corporation in 1937. The elm tree lined track, used for decades by horse-pulled carts laden with cereal crops to be threshed and ground, was replaced by tarmac as Holmes Avenue was extended northwards, leaving the mill isolated on a central island as she is seen today. Over the past 37 years, in conjunction with the council, volunteers from the Friends of the Mill group have

lovingly restored the interior of the building to its former glory and, with six floors open to view, this has proved to be a popular visitor attraction for young and old alike on Sunday and Bank Holiday afternoons from 2.30-5.00pm, from May to September inclusive. The mill is currently undergoing remedial works and repainting and is clad in scaffolding but is open on Sundays as usual. Refreshments are available in the north barn (rebuilt in 1997 and available to hire) and there is a wide selection of souvenirs for sale. Currently entrance charges are £2 for adults and £1 for children. For more information, see: www.sussexmillsgroup.org.uk/blatchington.htm

HOVE PARK Hove Park resident Sheena Vernon reports on the power of stories...

UNCOVERING THE POWER OF STORIES Eight 12 to 14 year olds from Hove Park School on Nevill Road were guests at a conference in London’s East End last month run by ‘The Ministry of Stories’. They may sound like a new department set up by David Cameron but are a charity that believes that common problems among children, like lack of confidence and poor communication skills, can be overcome by getting them to write creatively. The charity was started in California by a writer, Dave Eggers, and has since seen offshoots spring up in many parts of Europe, Canada, Australia and Latin America. In Britain it was the writer Nick Hornby who got the ball rolling with a storymentoring centre in Hoxton. Brighton too has its own offshoot of the Ministry of Stories which is called Little Green Pig. The charity runs workshops for young people aged 7 to 18. ‘Our purpose,’ says Ella Burns, one of Little Green Pig’s co-directors, ‘is to unleash children’s imagination through story telling. It’s so powerful and you’ll find an immediate impact on their self-esteem.’ When they approached Hove Park, the school was

• Wills, Probate, Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA), Deputyships • Family Law (Divorce, Dissolution, Pre-Nups, Financial disputes, Children matters) • Residential Conveyancing and Commercial Conveyancing, shop & lease sales • Personal injury - all forms of accident claims • Defending DWP Benefit Fraud investigations, Interviews under caution & Prosecutions • Criminal and Road Traffic Defence advice • Civil litigation / Debt recovery

happy to host workshops, to have pupils trial a new story-telling app (with online support from ‘story mentors’, of which more below) and to take part in the writing and filming of a child-led ‘soap opera’. The school, it seems, has little trouble when it comes to embracing innovation. Under its Learning Transformation Project every child has been issued with an iPad as a primary learning aid. The beneficial results apparently include increased levels of engagement, greater sharing of work among pupils and with parents, as well as less of a gap between high and low achievers (www.hovepark.brighton-hove.sch.uk/). It was in order to discuss results from their digital storytelling that a delegation of Hove Park students attended the “Write for a Bright Future” conference in order to share experiences with delegates from Denmark, Chile, Argentina, Italy, and the US, to name just a few of the countries represented, and to meet Dave Eggers who is seen with them in the photograph. If stories inspire you, do apply as a story mentor volunteer with Little Green Pig, they are looking for people from all walks of life. Training is provided as well as introductory sessions that allow potential volunteers to dip a toe in the water without committing. For further information, start with their website: www.littlegreenpig.org.uk.

HOVE PARK Update from the Friends of The Three Cornered Copse...

BARBECUE AND DOG POO FAIRIES AT THREE CORNERED COPSE This year the Friends of Three Cornered Copse is seven years old, and, as usual at this time of year, we celebrated with a short barbecue lunch to thank our volunteers and core committee for their work during the year. We also planted a batch of wild flower plugs, specially grown by Stanmer Park nursery, delivered by Garry (our park ranger) around the silver birches. The meadow of flowers is looking better, although some bad weeds are in amongst the good weeds. Garry advised us to take out any rapeseed and deadhead the ragwort. Next time we could dig out the numerous burdocks which dominate and are out of proportion to the other wild flowers. The principal users of Three Cornered Copse are cyclists, joggers and dog walkers; the latter are probably the largest group. The copse is a wonderful adventure playground for our canine friends, and it’s

a really social vortex for the owners too. The dogs play together, chase the balls thrown and, of course, poo on the floor. Practically all of the dog owners pick up the small deposits our friends will leave, and place them in the five dog bins that the council provide. But a growing problem, one that we’ve particularly noticed in the copse, is the strange behaviour of “incomplete disposal”. The owners carefully pick up the treasure, place it in the bag, but then leave the bag on the floor, or worse, throw it into the shrubs and trees, left dangling as unsavoury jewellery from the saplings and fences. Keep Britain Tidy have recognised this problem and launched a campaign called “There’s No Such Thing As A Dog Poo Fairy”. Their research shows that 70% of the local authorities they approached recognise this as a real concern. Last weekend, we picked up 20-30 of these small packages (there are poo fairies!), and it’s probably the most unpleasant activity of our friends group, but essential for keeping the copse safe for other users of the space. It’s anti-social to leave your dog’s mess lying in the pathways, but even worse to hang it in a plastic bag on a bush at eye level. At least it rots away when not encased in cellophane. Keep Britain Tidy’s campaign is here: http://www.keepbritaintidy.org/dogpoofairy/735 As usual, new volunteers always welcome. HOVE PARK Here we feature Eurotiles & Bathrooms not too far away in Brighton...

A MUST VISIT VENUE FOR YOUR NEW TILES AND BATHROOM If you’re revamping your bathroom or need tiles for your kitchen or conservatory floor, look no further: Eurotiles & Bathrooms is the one place that you ought to visit. There is a huge selection of tiles ranging in style from large size porcelain ones which are perfect for a modern bathroom or for kitchen, lounge and even patio floors, through mosaics to more traditional 10 x 10cm for kitchens and marble and stone effects for bathrooms. Wood effect tiles are very popular at the moment as the latest technology means that they are virtually indistinguishable from the real thing and they can be used in areas that are prone to damp where real wood would not be suitable, and the showroom has lots of choice of different styles and colours of wood. It is the exclusive stockist of Ca’ Pietra in Sussex giving you access to some fabulous natural stone tiles. There is also a full range of bathroom products on display including furniture, sanitary ware, showers, taps and accessories such as mirrors and heated towel rails.
