Another historical offering from local resident, Tony Pelling...
TALES OF GOLDSTONE BOTTOM There are many Bottoms in Sussex as this is the term which has been used for centuries by the folk of the county to describe some of our beautiful valleys. Locally we have Whitelot Bottom, Cockroost Bottom north of Mile Oak and Hazelholt Bottom north of Southwick Hill, but none have been visited so frequently by royalty as our Goldstone Bottom. Earwigs prompted an early royal visit when the military encampment of 1793 at Belle Vue Field (now Regency Square) became infested with the little nippers who emerged from under the flints cleared to make way for tents. The Prince of Wales (later George IV) who was present with a detachment of his 10th Light Dragoons decided to seek a different site and found the more friendly pastures of Goldstone Bottom where future encampments were built around his magnificent pavilion tent comprising four enormous “rooms” and large kitchen. (More of a stay than a visit it seems!) On 16th July 1936 the Greyhound Stadium staged military activity of a more entertaining kind when the Duke of Norfolk came to open the “Naval, Military &

Air Force Tournament”, a fund raising event for an extension to Hove Hospital. The Engineerium has had two ducal visits, the first by Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, in 1978 when the Duke described it as “an Outward Bound School in the history of technology”, and in 1993 the Duke of Kent visited in pursuit of his keen interest in the steam age. Our present Queen has also graced our valley with her presence. As Princess Elizabeth she came to review
her regiment, The Grenadier Guards, in Hove Park in May 1944 prior to their departure to take part in the D-Day landings. After her inspection they paraded south to where Field Marshal Montgomery and General Eisenhower took the salute on the steps of number 38, Wilbury Road. Another memorable visit took place on 16th July 1962 when the Queen inspected Queen’s Scouts and Guides before a crowd of over 10,000 in the Greyhound Stadium while the Duke chatted to Duke of Edinburgh Award winners. A first aid demonstration by the Boys Brigade also attracted the Duke’s attention and after chatting to young Michael Shorter who was profusely swathed in bandages he quipped, “I do hope you are going to let him out of there again.” On 29th March 2001 crowds gathered in Hove Park where it was reported the Queen and Duke would land by helicopter for a visit to the town. To me a “Royal Fly Past” is of planes flying in formation over Buckingham Palace but this day brought a whole new meaning to the phrase when the royal couple just…… Flew Past…… and landed at Shoreham Airport instead. Ah well! Tony Pelling

Here’s a new local café to try...
THE OLD REC CAFÉ – HOVE A café has been opened this summer in the south-eastern corner of Hove Recreation Ground by Leah Keating, who has lovingly restored the red brick cottage over the past couple of years and turned it into a cosy vintage café. The cottage was built in 1895. It started off as a gatekeeper’s cottage, and later housed a ladies’ toilet. Leah stumbled across it by accident, when she was looking for a business. Her car had broken down; she was walking through the recreation ground and saw the building with a “to let” sign. She made a phone call and put in a proposal to the council, who chose her scheme ahead of others. The building was in a derelict state, and a tree had taken over the roof. All the restoration work has been done by Leah’s family and friends, retaining as many of the original features as possible. Leah and her team are still building the menu and currently serve panini, sandwiches, scones and scrumptious cakes, baked on site. (Friday is cake day.) They even do a Marmite and fried egg sandwich! The café is dog friendly, with dog treats available. They opened in May and business is starting to pick up, as people get to know that it’s open.

E RECREATION GROUND “It’s getting a really nice community feel,” says Leah, “with people knowing each other’s names. There are a lovely group of dog walkers, and there’s a lot of trade coming in from the old people’s homes. We don’t have Internet in here and we won’t be getting it. I’m trying to create a nice peaceful haven.” Leah is also looking to organise community events at the café. The Old Rec Café is usually open from 9am to 5pm Tuesday to Friday, 10am to 4pm on Saturdays, and 10.30am to 4pm on Sundays. It is closed on Mondays. Opening times will be changing as the summer holidays begin and Leah hopes to have longer opening hours next year. If you haven’t discovered this café yet, it’s well worth a visit and you will receive a warm welcome. For more information, see the Facebook page: www.facebook.com/TheOldRecCafe

HOVE PARK Introducing the next ‘healthy living’ article written by local personal trainer and nutrition adviser Mary Henderson...
HEALTHY LIVING... NO TO PALEO Paleo is popular. This is a high protein diet with varying levels of carbohydrates permitted, from nothing to cereals and fruits forbidden. Easy to follow, pretty filling and you don’t feel like you’re completely depriving yourself – well, if meat takes pride of place on your plate. The recommended nutrient intake per day for the general public is 0.75g per kilogram of bodyweight (Food Standards Agency). It is widely reported to help achieve weight-loss goals but long-term it carries a lot of health risks. Firstly, protein is not calorie-free (4kcal per gram) so can lead to weight gain and excess body fat. Secondly, your body changes this excess protein into glucose (energy) which puts stress on your kidneys requiring more water and bone minerals to break it down and convert it. Needless to say this weakens your bones. For all you bodybuilders out there, your body can only initially respond to increased training demands when weight lifting. In other words, there’s only so much protein your body can absorb and convert into muscle, the rest is just turned into fat and stored. Lastly and not least, another concern is that studies suggest excess protein consumption increases your risk of cancer as it upregulates a mechanism that controls
the rate of cell division i.e. growth. Cancer is defined in part as uncontrolled cell division. Conversely, you must eat enough protein; over time, too little can lead to loss of muscle mass, decreased immunity, and a weakened cardiovascular system. Again, it always comes back down to moderation.

HOVE PARK The man behind the cover shots. From Stephen Batey, the ninth in a series of articles about photography...
TIME TO GET IN SHAPE The shape of a photograph is usually decided by the proportions of the image produced by the camera, the paper used for the print, or the standard picture frame chosen for mounting. However the overall effect of an image can be influenced by its shape, so there are times when cropping the picture to a different shape will be worthwhile as the following examples show. A square image can enhance a feeling of stability and calm and so works well with this tranquil image of Pulteney Bridge in Bath.
The effect of a sweeping expanse of hills or water may be increased by a narrowed horizontal format which encourages our eyes to scan across the image as if they were viewing the actual panorama. When used vertically the elongated format can emphasise height, as in this photograph of part of the walls in Southampton:
PREMIER WINDOWS
Doors and Conservatories
One shape which was common in Victorian days but rarely seen in photographs nowadays is a circle. The image produced by the Foredown Tower camera obscura is projected onto a circular dish in the darkened room. A circle is therefore the natural shape for a photograph of that image.

HOVE PARK Have you been to the BOAT yet?
AUGUST AT THE BRIGHTON OPEN AIR THEATRE The cream of local companies come together at the Brighton Open Air Theatre (BOAT) this month. As You Like It
Heartbreak House
This wonderful Shakespearean romantic comedy about life, love, betrayal, faith and death is performed by Folksy Theatre Company, with live music, bold characters, audience interaction and plenty of laughs. A perfect tribute to mark the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death (August 4, 7pm, £14).
As Britain prepares to extricate itself from Europe, this revival, written during the First World War, and projecting Shaw’s sadness about politics and society, couldn’t be more timely: a nation on the brink, cultured Europe, drifting towards ruin! On an estate in the Sussex countryside stands Heartbreak House, home to disappointment, a privileged zone where rules are suspended, lovers are switched, hierarchies reversed, and—strangest of all—people find themselves telling the truth. This ‘Ship of Fools’ is guided by ancient mariner Captain Shotover, who longs, with the power of his mind, to dynamite the whole social order sky high.
Ruddigore Illyria’s production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Ruddigore, a glorious spoof of gothic haunted house stories, faithfully performed by a reduced cast and accompanied by a musical director on keyboard (August 7, 3pm, £15). Much Ado About Nothing Much Ado About Nothing is a joint production from Brighton Shakespeare Company, The Treason Show and the Rialto Theatre, who have combined forces to return to the essence of this much-loved romantic comedy (August 10 – 14, 7.30pm plus 3pm performances August 13 & 14).
George Bernard Shaw’s 1919 masterpiece of rich vs poor, women vs men, young vs old, propriety vs decadence, innovation vs exploitation, and the spirit vs materialism is reworked by Droll And Folly Theatre (DAFT), a new company formed to perform in the inaugural BOAT season in 2015 (16-21 August 7pm, 20 & 21 August 2pm, £14/£12).

HOVE PARK Here is your regular update from the Friends of Three Cornered Copse...
THE RAGGED WOOD W.B. Yeats wrote a poem about “The Ragged Wood”, and walking through the copse at the height of summer, it’s apt to use the description for the forest floor at this time of year. The vegetation looks dark green and grey, not the vibrant greens of spring, as the light is stolen by the high tree foliage at the top of the canopy. The parsley and the spring vegetation has died back and their “ragged” look suggests a time of succession, as the only thriving plant is the shade-loving ground growth of the copse floor. The paths are baked hard as concrete, the tree roots stand proud to trip up joggers and cyclists (be careful!), the constant mud of autumn and winter relegated to a distant memory. The upper path, near the top, is almost consumed in high-growing nettles and brambles; this will need our attention in the coming workdays. But the insects thrive, despite the recent wet days, and feed the birds that are gorging themselves, having reared their nests, and, exhausted, are now feeding greedily, as the season reaches its peak. We recently discussed how many people actually visit the copse, and how popular this amenity could be. On a walk up and down the copse on a summer’s day, within half an hour, we could meet at least a dozen people. There are probably another dozen, whom we do not meet, so as a starting point we could assume there are around 25 people in the copse at any time during the daylight hours. Each visit would hardly last one hour, (since the copse really is a corridor to the South Downs), so let’s assume there would be 50 visitors each hour. Extrapolating, this could mean 500 each 10-hour day, or perhaps only 250 in the winter hours, which means a

conservative estimate of 9,500 visitors each year would not be unreasonable! But the unmeasurable benefit of the summer hours and the visits to the copse are the social interactions that we have each day. Total strangers become regular acquaintances, particularly among the dog-walkers, and the cyclists always shout a greeting as they climb up the steep path, despite the shortage of breath. Three Cornered Copse as a social amenity is invaluable for connecting with other people. So why not take a stroll through Three Cornered Copse this month, and connect with your neighbours, and enjoy The Ragged Wood.

HOVE PARK Featuring local Brighton and Hove business Eurotiles and Bathrooms...
A MUST-VISIT VENUE FOR YOUR NEW TILES AND BATHROOM If you’re revamping your bathroom or need tiles for your kitchen or conservatory floor, look no further: Eurotiles & Bathrooms is the one place that you ought to visit. There is a huge selection of tiles ranging in style from large size porcelain ones which are perfect for a modern bathroom or for kitchen, lounge and even patio floors, through mosaics to more traditional 10 x 10cm for kitchens and marble and stone effects for bathrooms. Wood effect tiles are very popular at the moment as the latest technology means that they are virtually indistinguishable from the real thing and they can be used in areas that are prone to damp where real wood would not be suitable, and the showroom has lots of choice of different styles and colours of wood. It is the exclusive stockist of Ca’ Pietra in Sussex giving you access to some fabulous natural stone tiles. There is also a full range of bathroom products on display including furniture, sanitary ware, showers, taps and accessories such as mirrors and heated towel rails. Ege sanitary ware, which comes with a 10-year warranty, is exclusive to Eurotiles & Bathrooms in the UK and they have other stylish brands such as Burlington and Pura Bathrooms.
Most of the range is in stock so you don’t need to plan weeks in advance, you can just come in, choose your products and take them away, or arrange for free local delivery. The Brighton showroom is based on the Freshfields Business Park, near to Screwfix and Benchmarx Kitchens. They offer free parking so you can pull up outside, and knowledgeable, friendly staff to help you decide on the best products for your project. www.eurotilesandbathrooms.com Email: brighton@eurotilesandbathrooms.com Phone: 01273 605445
