HOVE PARK
A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL!! Where does it suddenly spring from! It just seems like yesterday we were enjoying an amazing end to the Summer and now all of a sudden Christmas is almost upon us with all the things that comes with it! As always a massive thanks for everyone’s support and positive comments and especially for all contributors to the magazine. This month we have had some new items sent in to us for publication. We have a feature on a new book written by a local Hove Park resident - all the better that the book has a distinctly Christmassy topic. We were also delighted to receive an e-mail from a dog! The dog in question has offered to write a piece for the next 6 months on his observations around the park...should be interesting! We have the usual updates from local community groups and once more thank you to Stephen Batey for the lovely cover. We wish you all a wonderful festive period and happy and healthy New Year!! HOVE PARK Please let us know what you are up to; this article was sent in to us by a local Hove Park writer...
A NOVEL WITH A SEASONAL NOTE By Sheena Vernon, a writer who recently moved into the Hove Park area. Many people will hear or sing parts of Handel’s Messiah this Christmas, but few of them, I suspect, will be familiar with the story of rejection and rehabilitation that lies behind its creation. While Handel was enjoying the celebrity of running the opera house in early Georgian London, his Italian singers turned against him, as did fashionable society. He became a pawn in the game of hate being played out by George ll and his son, Prince Frederick, and was kicked out of the opera house to make way for a rival company. In 1737, due to overwork, he had a paralytic fit. As he lay in his bed, unable to speak, you could be forgiven for thinking he was finished. Yet he resurrected himself: he created a new genre of music - the dramatic oratorio sung in English - found new audiences, inspired choirs to spring up across Britain, and, of course, wrote the most popular oratorio of them all. This was premiered, not in London but in Dublin. Laden with debt and sick of the constant harping of the news sheets, he spent ten happy months in retreat there. In Dublin, he felt, ‘good conversation and wit had yet to be banished from polite society.’
been written in English. The focus of the book is not actually Handel; rather it tells the story of a young singer, Harry Walsh, who falls in love with Handel’s assistant, Peter. The relationship sours just as Harry’s career goes into spectacular reverse and he loses all his money in an unwise speculation. It’s as much about a young man exploring his sexuality as it is about the rise and fall of the Italian opera. It’s a light-hearted romp through the 1730s and ‘40s, when musical tastes were changing, and is quite raunchy in places. You most certainly don’t have to be an expert on music to enjoy it but being broad-minded will help. ‘Messiah. Love, music and malice,’ by Sheena Vernon, can be ordered through Amazon or City Books.
Intrigued by the majestic figure of Handel, and the dramas in his life, I decided to write a novel which would try to capture the circumstances surrounding the birth of the single, most enduring piece of music ever to have

The monthly update from The Friends of Hove Park...
THE FRIENDS OF HOVE PARK - a review of 2014 The fast approaching end of 2014 is an opportune time to review what has been achieved in the first full year of the Friends’ existence. Our first community event was a very popular Easter Egg trail. This was a good opportunity to make ourselves known and also increase familiarity with Hove Park as the clues led around several of its lesser known elements (see photograph of clue 6). We subsequently had a stand at the Martlets Carnival, braving the miserable weather, and were pleased to meet a number of people expressing an interest in the group. We set up a website with information about both the Friends and Hove Park itself. It has been well received and will be expanded as time permits. Our chairman, Alan Moon, has made contact with similar groups, and taken part in Brighton and Hove City in Bloom judging. In aiming to improve the park, we started the year with a park tidy-up, and then went on to wild and ornamental flower planting projects. A gardening group has also been formed and has had several sessions assisting the park gardeners with general gardening tasks.
The wildflower mound by the playground has been left to its own devices since our initial planting with wildflower plugs. The butterfly bed near the Goldstone has however needed regular attention particularly in maintaining by hand the intricate outline whilst the grass has been growing so quickly (see photograph). This colourful ‘butterfly’ has received appreciative comments from passers by. We have also planted bare root wallflowers in the green flag bed by the Old Shoreham Road. They are just about holding their own against the wind and rain and hopefully will provide a good display next year. Finally, I’d like to wish you all a very happy Christmas. For further details of the Friends and to contact us, see our website www.FriendsOfHovePark.org

HOVE PARK Introducing the next ‘healthy living’ article written by local personal trainer and nutrition adviser Mary Henderson...
‘TIS THE SEASON… …to indulge and be merry! Here’s a wee reminder of two traditional themes to a good old-fashioned Christmas. Number one: Home cooking. Sharing the experience and burden of food preparation brings people together and reduces time for mindless snacking and solitary, life-sucking staring at screens. Food is at the heart of Christmas so let’s appreciate quality not quantity. Invest a little more in better quality ingredients and save by buying less. Love Food, Hate Waste! Look forward to nutritious homemade puddings instead of grazing on processed shop-bought treats. Cooking from wholesome ingredients means fewer preservatives and a good dose of nutrients keeping your immune system fit for the season. Number two: Interaction. Be creative, be active, and most of all, be together. Go for walks, play board games, make decorations. There’s no need to be home alone; visit fairs, sing at carol concerts or even volunteer with a local organisation like the Brighton and Hove Food Partnership (check out their Good Food for Good Causes project). Brighton and Hove is blessed with lots of com-

Introducing the first in a series of park observations written by Sir Patrick - a literate Lhasa Apso...
A NEW DOG MOVES INTO HOVE PARK AND WHAT DOES HE FIND.... I was lucky enough to move to this area while it was still sunny, so when the Female and I first ventured to the park, imagine our surprise when we found that a detachment from the British Army was occupying it. It was around 6pm and young men in combat fatigues had emerged from a van attired in tank-tyre trainers and vests; they dragged out weapons of mass instruction as they prepared to fight the war against flab. Their first set of detainees were similarly attired/bicepped young men who ran off to the nearest set of bars to jump over them a hundred times before doing the same number of press-ups. The more mature group were hostage to bodies that had started to sag and swell in unexpected places and whose flimsy gym-wear showed similar signs of age. As they waved their arms round in formation, they looked like an impromptu wind farm. The lady combatants were the most colourful as their training had clearly been preceded by a few vigorous

circuits of the local mall. High visibility, hip-hugging pink, orange or lime green were much in favour. After running round the labyrinth (bet the artist who created it did not see it being used for such) they swooped off like a group of parakeets up over the slopes and through the trees while the instructor screamed at them. Amidst all this activity the Female and I plodded round, avoiding the personal trainers who had laid their prey out on the path and were doing horrible things to their limbs. We side-stepped the parakeets as they rushed past, faces grim, lingered a moment at the bars (the Female does like a good bicep), then found a bench, that didn't have someone doing press-ups on it, and took in the last rays of the sun. These observations were made by Sir Patrick, a Lhasa Apso who has his own dogwalking blog, doggytalkdalkey. blogspot.co.uk. The Female is local resident Sheena Vernon.
