Health Tip
Blimey, Christmas is here again! Where did that sneak up from? It was only Summer a few weeks ago and here we are once again in a panic about turkeys, sprouts and shopping! I am afraid I am a bit last minute every Christmas and find the whole thing a bit of a strain often scratching around for presents in the shops on Christmas Eve before the shops close. I always make a resolution to be super organised for the next Christmas but never seem to pull it off. I hope you all have it nicely under control! Still all things considered it is a magical time of the year and we wish you all the very best for a restful and enjoyable yuletide! The Hove Park Living Team

HOVE PARK Local resident Tony Pelling with stories from Goldstone Bottom...
TALES OF GOLDSTONE BOTTOM... TAKE A PEW In 1902 when Brighton & Hove Albion took up residence in Goldstone Bottom a new church was being established within 100 yards of their ground and in the next few decades their paths would cross many times. St Agnes Church at the south end of Goldstone Lane started life as a Mission Hall but ten years later, it was decided to build a “proper” church on the site with the Mission Hall forming the new crypt. The completed church was to be dedicated by the Bishop of Chichester on Saturday 18th October 1913 and his procession arrived outside the church just as the Albion’s home match finished and the crowd poured out. Now, whether the football fans felt the need to pray for their team or were simply tired from standing on the terraces we shall never know, but many of them decided to join the worshipping throng and take a pew. No harm there except that one saucy Albion fan, seeing a packed church, boldly announced that he was from the Church Times and took the pew reserved for that paper’s reporter. Nasty foul! Red card? After a while the relationship between club and church improved and, on those occasions when s w ce No Pla ble a il va

Brighton Boys had matches at the Goldstone on the same day as the Albion, the church allowed the boys and their opponents to change in the crypt. One reporter (could it have been the Church Times man?) asked what the church charged for this facility, to which the vicar replied, “Nothing, my dear chap, we do try to be Christian.” The tolerance of the church fathers was strained almost to breaking on Boxing Day in 1929 when Albion fans, unable to get in to this very popular fixture, climbed onto scaffolding on the west wall of the church in order to see the game. Fortunately there were no fatalities in the resultant collapse, though several were injured but with the help of colleagues managed to flee the scene before they could be identified as responsible for the damage to the church. St Agnes, the daughter of a high ranking Roman family, was beheaded for her faith in AD 305 at the age of 12. Sadly, in the 1970s her church was deemed redundant and the Albion were successful in purchasing it and converting it into a gymnasium (after taking out ALL the pews, of course!). Very appropriately it is now occupied by the popular and successful Brighton and Hove Gymnastics Club. I visited the club recently and I am sure Agnes would have been as delighted as I was to see the young gymnasts enjoying their sport so much in the building which bore her name. Tony Pelling

LOCAL PERSON... ROBERT BLASS - SHOW PRODUCER Robert Blass lives in Nevill Road and is the producer of Jack and the Beanstalk at the Windmill Theatre, Nevill Avenue, at Christmas. How long have you lived in the Hove Park area? I have been living in the Hove Park area for 20 years. What do you like about living here? I just love living in Hove where I can stroll along the seafront breathing in pure fresh air, looking at the sea, realising how lucky I am. Is there anything in the area you would like to change? Singers who come to our singing group by car are very confused now that pay meters have been removed. Some singers live out of the area, some don’t have mobile phones, many are disabled. It’s a complete disaster and the council just don’t care. Tell us more about your singing group... Singing for Pleasure is now in its fourth successful year. Starting with 30 people, it has grown into a thriving sing-

ing for pleasure and social group, now with 200 members and 150 regular weekly singers. We cater for all age groups - no need to read music. We sing to a catalogue of over 350 popular show songs taken from the West End and popular shows and musicals from Broadway. Simon Gray, our musical director, takes each live session. We sing at Hove Methodist Church on Tuesdays at 2pm, in Patcham on a Thursday afternoon, and on Monday nights at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Dyke Road. Our popular social side includes theatre visits, cinema outings and food evenings out, visiting local restaurants. New singers are always welcome – telephone for further information: 01273 555089. How did you get into pantomime production? I have been producing shows for 15 years and I always wanted to produce a pantomime, so last year I produced Cinderella and this year it’s Jack and the Beanstalk. What other shows have you produced? I have produced variety spectacular shows at the Brighton Dome, Corn Exchange, Theatre Royal, Hove Town Hall, Pavilion Theatre in Worthing and the Barn Theatre in Southwick. I have also produced the original and sensational Abba Gold tribute band live at the Theatre Royal. In November we sang for Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice in Churchill Square shopping centre. Tell us more about Jack and the Beanstalk... It’s directed by two very experienced show directors, Simon Gray and Nathan Potter, and features a full company of actors, singers and dancers with a five-piece band. To hear or not to hear? Q: What should I do if I think I have a hearing loss? A: Recognising that you may have a hearing loss and deciding to take action is the first important step to better hearing. Don’t suffer in silence! By taking this step, you’ll learn about the variety of things that can be done to address it. At Hove Hearing, our experienced
They provide comprehensive clinical and counselling expertise. During a hearing evaluation, your audiologist will conduct a number of tests to determine whether you have a hearing loss and, crucially, if hearing instruments are right for you or not. Q: I don’t want people to notice I’m wearing a hearing aid. How discreet are they? A: Hearing aid technology has improved dramatically in the last few years. Our fantastic new hearing aids are really small. They fit discreetly behind and inside the ear and are virtually invisible when worn. HOVE PARK Introducing the next ‘healthy living’ article written by local personal trainer and nutrition adviser Mary Henderson...
HEALTHY LIVING...SMALL STEPS, BIG CHANGE With all the knowledge and will in the world, there’s an ocean between an intention and realising it. Whether that’s a dream career or a dream holiday, it won’t materialise unless we make a realistic plan and the same goes for lifestyle changes. The secret is taking small steps or SMART goals which most of us have come across at work or school but perhaps not thought to apply to our lifestyles. It’s not a sexy crash diet or a detox retreat from reality, but experts say that this is what works in helping people to adopt lifelong healthy behaviours. Let’s try one: S – specific: eat 2 more portions of fruit and veg a day. M – measurable: put a tick on your wall calendar each day you manage this. A – achievable: buy some fruit to keep at work or in the car for the morning. Look at what meals you already have and incorporate some veg - carrots in your chilli con carne? “Swaps” mean you work with your habits, not against them. R - realistic: is 7 days too much? 5 may be more realistic to start with.
T – time-bound: you can do this for a week, but how about keeping it up for 6 weeks…until you don’t think twice about it? Review at the end of week 2, why isn’t it working or are you ready to set a new goal? As New Year nears, think ahead, scale down those resolutions and spread them across 2016!
Is Pain ruining your life? Having suffered with a bad back for very many years I finally came on the recommendation of a friend. I am very pleased, not only has my back improved enormously under their care but I have felt encouraged to keep up a good fitness regime. Kathy

HOVE PARK The man behind the cover shots. From Stephen Batey, the third in a series of articles about photography...
CAMERA ACCESSORIES Although all you need is a camera and a lens, some accessories can improve your photographs. I’d recommend that you always use a lens hood. If you look at your camera from the side, you can see the front of the lens from positions that won’t be included in the photograph. Putting that another way, light that shouldn’t form part of your photograph will pass into the lens; and although the lens should be designed to absorb most of this unwanted light, some will still reach the sensor or film. The result can be lower contrast, lighter areas (as seen below in a photograph from Hove Park) or even one or more bright images of the light source.
As well as protection from unwanted light, a lens hood also offers some physical protection. If you want to photograph through glass, pressing the front of the hood against the glass will prevent unwanted reflections (a rubber lens hood is a good choice for this). A tripod can be very worthwhile. Whilst they may be considered heavy, cumbersome and awkward to carry around, they offer other benefits besides holding the camera steady for long exposures. Having the camera fixed makes it easier to think more carefully about the exact position; and this can make a large difference as we saw in the previous two articles. A tripod can also hold the camera in positions that would otherwise be very difficult, such as close to the ground. Finally, filters. There are several useful ones available; I’d particularly recommend a polarising filter as this can help to reduce reflections and improve colour saturation as shown below.
It can also enhance a blue sky because, as the light at angles around 90° to the sun is polarised, the filter will darken the sky in this direction. If you would like to advertise your business in

HOVE PARK Update from the Friends of The Three Cornered Copse...
NEWS FROM THREE CORNERED COPSE As a wet autumn passes over us, Three Cornered Copse has become an area fit only for the most ardent mudlover. The paths, usually baked hard in the dry season, are now fit only for the sure-footed, wellington wearer, with a good sense of balance. It’s the same story each year; only a fortnight of rain is needed to turn the paths into a quagmire. Each year The Friends of Three Cornered Copse take a truckload of woodchips, courtesy of the council’s Stanmer Gardens nursery, and distribute these along the worst affected routes. This particularly affects the paths at the top of the copse running between the woodland and along the wire fence bordering Woodland Court flats. A natural dish traps the water, which refuses to drain away, resulting in the mud paths. The woodchips tend to last for six months or so, until the spring returns, providing some surface to the less slippery areas. This year the council has decided to take some “flood mitigation action”, and has delivered several tons of chalk in grab-bags on the side of Dyke Road Avenue. The chalk will be used to create a more drained surface in these paths, hopefully rendering them less

treacherous to walkers and cyclists. The exact nature and plans for this chalk has yet to be disclosed, more on this in later months. The arrival of these bags caused some consternation, as many thought this was a fly-tipping incident, perhaps the result of the excavations of several local properties. Happily though, the fly-tipping in the copse is only confined to a few piles of garden rubbish which appear on the areas and footpaths behind the gardens of some houses. It’s still a serious matter. In Kent last week two fly-tippers were sentenced to four years prison each, for repeated offences. (Garden rubbish dumpers – take heed.) According to the Campaign for the Protection of Rural England, litter and fly-tipping bother us more than almost any other issue. A Mori poll in July 2007 found the public more concerned about litter and graffiti than they were about climate change. MPs get more letters complaining about litter and dog fouling than anything else, and these are regularly tackled by the Friends of Three Cornered Copse on each workday. Most of us prefer the traditional winter scene of the copse, covered in snow for sledges and snowmen. This photo was taken in 2010. Happy Christmas, from the Friends of Three Cornered Copse.

HOVE PARK Here is a local advent calender with a difference...
WORLD’S FIRST BEACH HUT ADVENT CALENDAR GOES FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH This December will see the ninth annual Beach Hut Advent Calendar every night on Hove seafront. Now established as a Brighton and Hove tradition, this family friendly event will give you an opportunity to mark the countdown to Christmas in a uniquely artistic and spiritual way. Each night from the 1st to the 24th December, one hut (and one hut only) will open its doors from 5.30pm – 6.30pm to reveal an artistic surprise to remind us of the true meaning of Christmas. Come down to the seafront to enjoy a warming drink, a mince pie and to wonder at the creativity of the artists, schools and community groups who are all taking part this year. Regular visitors will be able to collect a special beach hut stamp each night and the person who has collected the most stamps by Christmas Eve will have the chance to win a fantastic Christmas hamper courtesy of the Co-Op. The event is organised by BEYOND, which uses creativity and the arts to stimulate thinking around Christian spirituality. The full schedule of openings and further information about the event can be found at: www.beyondchurch.co.uk.

HOVE PARK News of a fascinating local exhibition...
VIEWS OF BRIGHTON & HOVE IN THE EARLY 19TH CENTURY This exhibition of prints and drawings of early 19th century Brighton & Hove at Brighton Museum has now been extended until 6th March 2016. The exhibition shows how Brighton developed into a fashionable seaside resort. There are pictures of past attractions such as the Chain Pier and the Royal Brighton Gardens, other grand projects which were never begun, and buildings which have survived to the present day, such as a lithograph of the Royal Sussex County Hospital from 1841. Pictured here is The Anthaeum. Kate Elms, of The Royal Pavilion & Museums, writes: “In the summer of 1833, an unnamed artist settled down to sketch an ambitious new building that was nearing completion on a piece of land north of Adelaide Crescent in Hove. Artists’ impressions such as this ink and wash drawing provide a visual record of life before the development of photography, and this example was particularly timely. Just a few weeks later - at the end of August 1833 – this vast iron and glass structure lay in ruins. “The Anthaeum, as it was known, was the brainchild of local botanist Henry Phillips. He envisaged a horticultural Eden, complete with exotic trees and birds, a lake and a rocky hill. Designed by architect AH Wilds and engineer C Hollis, it was to be a domed glasshouse measuring over 65 feet high and 165 feet in diameter. It was a huge logistical project for the 1830s: the structure was formed from around 500 tons of iron, which was shipped into Shoreham Harbour and then dragged to the site by teams of horses. “The construction was fraught with difficulties and further hampered by professional disagreements. Wilds and Hollis argued that the dome needed a central,

supporting pillar, but, faced with resistance from the contractor, both architect and engineer abandoned the job. This proved disastrous. Before Phillips had sought further advice, the contractor removed the temporary support and, on 30 August 1833, the Anthaeum collapsed. “Hundreds of people came to view the tangled remains, which stayed where they fell for another 20 years. They became an odd tourist attraction in their own right until they were eventually removed for the development of Palmeira Square.” The exhibition is on until 6th March at Brighton Museum and Art Gallery in the Royal Pavilion garden (closed on Mondays) and is free with Brighton Museum admission. HOVE PARK An update from the friends of Hove Park...
NEWS FROM THE FRIENDS OF HOVE PARK... UK’S BEST PARK? Hove Park has held the prestigious Green Flag award from Keep Britain Tidy for several years and has now been nominated for the award of UK’s Best Park from Fields in Trust (FIT). By the time this appears in print, the online voting by the public will have closed (on 25th November). The three parks with the most votes will be short listed, and the overall winner announced at the Fields in Trust award ceremony on 2nd December. Originally called the National Playing Fields Association (the name was changed in 2007), the Fields in Trust website describes the organisation as follows: “Fields in Trust is the only national charity that protects the parks, playing fields and playgrounds that you love. Founded in 1925 by King George V, we currently protect over 2,500 outdoor recreational sites from development.” FIT has continued to enjoy considerable support from the Royal Family with the Duke of Edinburgh being President for many years followed by the Duke of
Cambridge since 2013. HM The Queen has been Patron for over 60 years. Hove Park is one of only nineteen nominations for the UK’s Best Park from the South of England region as is the nearby Stoneham Park.
