WELCOME TO THE FEBRUARY EDITION OF HOVE PARK LIVING

So no snow yet this winter so far…well, at the time of writing anyway, which happens to be mid-January. Before winter started there was talk in the press of it being the coldest winter for many a long year, but so far we have been spared it seems.

So what will you find in this month’s Hove Park Living to read? At least a few items of interest, we hope. We have an article kindly sent in to us by a resident about an historical incident that took place in Goldstone Bottom, as well as all the usual updates from the various local community groups. And there is more, so read on… Here are some February dates to be aware of: 14th Valentine’s Day, 17th Shrove Tuesday, and not forgetting the Chinese New Year on the 19th!! Also congratulations are due to the winner of our Christmas competition. The winner of the Cinderella competition in December’s edition was James Wilson. Well done, James. We hope you enjoyed the show. Finally, we welcome your letters about local issues, so please send them in. info@hoveparkliving.co.uk Cover Photo: Kindly sent in to us by local resident Stephen Batey. HOVE PARK This article on local history was sent in to us by a local resident…
TALES OF GOLDSTONE BOTTOM Shortly after setting out on one of my brisk health-giving walks round the park I saw a young lady, seemingly set on a similar mission, coming towards me. As she approached she smiled and I returned the smile. Half a circuit later we passed each other and exchanged smiles again. As I completed the circuit it became clear we would cross paths yet once more, so to avoid simple smiles becoming repetitive I decided upon a comment. I slowed as she approached and said, “Do you know, this is amazing, I have just seen your two sisters.” With a broad grin she responded, “And I’ve seen your twin.” We chuckled, smiled, and walked on. I haven’t seen her since. I may never see her again. Just a simple, happy exchange. Events in Goldstone Bottom have not always been as pleasant. Long before our park was sited there the valley was crossed by many travellers using the well-worn track-ways, bridle-ways, droves and paths. Since the 17th century young post boys on pack horses had been used as conveyors of local mail and by the end of the 18th century they could often be seen in Goldstone Bottom with bags of mail destined for Portslade village. Late on 30th October 1792, post boy John Stephenson

was on such a journey when he was accosted by two villains who relieved him of his burden and disappeared into the gloom. Evidence concerning the stolen horse the thieves had used, together with the suspicions which one Phoebe Hassell communicated to the constable, Bartholomew Roberts, led to the arrest of James Rook and Edward Howell who were both found to have some of the stolen property on them. At their trial in Horsham they were sentenced to be hanged and gibbeted at the scene of their crime. The sentence was carried out on 26th April 1793 to the north of Old Shoreham Road, at a spot near Hove Drove marked by Gibbet Barn until it was demolished in the 1930s. Many months after the hanging, the grieving mother of James Rook came by night to recover his bones from the gibbet and secretly buried them in Old Shoreham churchyard. But that was ages ago. I think I’ll just keep smiling and hope for more happy exchanges. Tony Pelling

HOVE PARK Introducing the next ‘healthy living’ article written by local personal trainer and nutrition adviser Mary Henderson...
FEBRUARY... MONTH OF HEARTS It’s great, as St Valentine’s Day is being embraced, to focus on something that applies to even the single souls. Heart health. A great analogy for heart health I heard the other day was, wait for it, your central heating system. If your boiler’s firing properly and the pipes are clear, the house stays nice and warm, with the heat and hot water pumped around the house, especially to engine rooms like the kitchen and bathroom. Not a bad comparison. So what can we do to service our hearts and avoid a costly out-of-hours emergency call-out? We all know the importance of some exercise but, in order to maintain our hearts, it needs to get us slightly out of breath. The national recommendation is 30 minutes of moderate exercise five times a week to make sure our hearts circulate blood more efficiently. This can be split up into 10-minute blocks. That could be including some hills in your walks, cycling or, my favourite, dancing. What about food? Well, we know the foods to cut down on – saturated fats (like butter, cheese and animal fats) and processed foods with all their added sugar and salt. Get more fibre (eg brown bread, grains

and pulses) and fruit and veg which help us shift excess fat and get key micronutrients. The foods which up our good cholesterol, controlling excess lipids in our blood, are good fats found in avocados, nuts and oily fish. The British Heart Foundation has tons of useful information. Introducing the next in a series of park observations written by Sir Patrick - a literate Lhasa Apso...
SIR PATRICK’S THOUGHTS ON: NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS New Year’s resolutions. Don’t you hate them? At first, when I heard that she, who-at all-times-as-a-point-ofhonour-must-be-disobeyed, had vouchsafed that she intended to be fitter, I got quite excited. More walks, I thought, woof woof. I didn’t realise that what the Female had in mind was togging me out in a high visibility jacket, so I looked ‘sporty’, then spending a lot of time on the gym equipment in Hove Park. At weekends, of course, this involved waiting until five-year-olds got tired of using it for playing, or forcibly ejecting them if their parents weren’t looking. During weekdays I merely had the humiliation of having to hide in the bushes so that some uppish labradoodle type didn’t snigger at me because her fat thighs swishing back and forth on the exerciser looked so ridiculous. If this wasn’t bad enough, the Female made the mistake of trying to give up alcohol at the same time. I could have told her, pace yourself, don’t try and solve all your problems in one go. But would she listen? Of course not. So, as a result, her immune system collapsed and she got ill, as anyone would if they tried to get fit and go
teetotal all at the same time. Poor me, night after night I had to put up with hacking and snivelling, then, during the day, she felt too sorry for herself to go out. Hello? I was much more sorry than she was. As several readers will, by now, be reaching for their hankies because of my distress, let me reassure them that I was rescued. I’m ‘borrowed’, you see. The Female subscribes to a website where those who like dogs, but are not in a position to keep one, can borrow someone else’s. My dear dog borrowers, let’s just call them A and G, came daily to take me on vigorous walks along the front, at Stanmer, up the copse, or at Hove Park. But on no occasion was I forced to linger by the gym equipment or put up with venting about children misusing it. The hacking, thank goodness, has stopped and the Female is, naturally, drinking like a fish again and back to simple walking. You see, there is one thing to be said in favour of New Year’s resolutions. They never last. These observations were made by Sir Patrick, a Lhasa Apso who has his own dogwalking blog, doggytalkdalkey. blogspot.co.uk. The Female is local resident Sheena Vernon.

HOVE PARK The monthly update from The Friends of Hove Park...
PUBLIC SCULPTURE IN HOVE PARK
For this winter month I’ll focus on a couple of interesting examples of public sculpture in Hove Park. The unusual ‘Fingermaze’ in the north-east of the park is a very visible landscape feature (see photograph). Chris Drury, an internationally renowned environmental artist, was commissioned to produce the permanent artwork in 2006 as part of the local ‘Making a Difference’ initiative funded through the national Urban Cultural Programme. The giant ‘fingerprint’, incorporating a Cretan labyrinth, is made from random York stone in lime mortar (which takes less energy to produce and has a lower carbon footprint than cement) set into the turf. Walking the grass path to the centre of the labyrinth and back out again is intended to be a contemplative journey. The nearby Storyteller’s Chair is however easier to miss. This magnificent chair, installed in 2011, is sculpted from a block of oak with impressive relief carvings featuring local wildlife (see photograph of detail). The surrounding circle of logs provides seating for the listeners.
MB
Landscapes
Creating Outdoor Spaces
It was commissioned and funded by Bernard Chibnall, a member of Hove Civic Society, both to add a new feature to the park and in memory of his wife Joan. The adjacent plaque reads: This sculpture has been presented by the family of Joan Chibnall, who died at the age of 85. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and at one time primary school teacher. The sculpture will provide a chair and seats for children to have stories read to them, which Joan felt was an essential step to their learning to read for themselves. The sculpture was created by Woodland Centre, a family-run chainsaw carving business whose distinctive work can be seen in several local parks and other sites in Southern England. HOVE PARK Update from the Friends of The Three Cornered Copse...
BAT BOXES IN HOVE PARK A while ago, the Committee of the Friends of the Three Cornered Copse decided to put up bat boxes as part of our work day sessions. These are now in place and have been made from oak, so will hopefully last a long time. They have been sited on a few of the larger trees in the copse, so why not take a stroll and see how many you can find. (The pictures opposite will show you what to look out for.) You will notice that the box has a ‘bat ladder’ that leads to an entry slit wide enough to admit bats, but narrow enough to keep out predators. (Once up, a bat box cannot be opened legally without a licence.) Bats don’t like draughts, and prefer well-insulated boxes where temperature and humidity remain constant. They also need a rough textured wood to cling to. Some bats use a tree line or hedgerow for navigation. So careful planning was undertaken in putting our boxes near these features which help the bats find the box. Bats need time to find and explore new homes, and it may be several years before boxes have residents.

Bat Boxes in the Copse
We haven’t seen any occupants yet, so will need to be patient. Droppings on the landing area, urine stains around the lower parts of the box and chittering noises from inside on warm afternoons and evenings are signs of occupation. If you do hear or see these signs, please do let us know. Thank you. The Friends Group will meet up again on Saturday 31st January 2015, then again in March. The work day starts at 10.00am until 1.00pm, always gathering at the bench at the bottom of the green slope, just in front of the grove of silver birches. There is always work to be done, and we have planned activities for future work days: laying wood chippings in the areas which tend to become waterlogged and carrying out a general tidy-up of the area. We hope to see you soon. Further details on our group can be seen via:http://www.threecorneredcopse.org.uk/ Or our Club Secretary Morwenna Cork 01273 556256 Email: info@threecorneredcopse.org.uk

HOVE PARK Here is a business feature that may be useful...
LOOK UP! AND GET MORE SPACE AT HOME FOR JUST £325 We’d all like more room at home. But not everyone can afford to move or extend. So what if there was a way to get extra space for just a few hundred pounds, ready to use in less than a day? In truth, that space is already there. It’s just not being used to its full potential. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited on rare occasions; a precarious scramble across dusty beams with torch in hand, grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of the floorspace in an average home. So shouldn’t we be making the most of it And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton six years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making our lofts easily accessible. The latest MTLL franchise is based in Brighton and is run by skilled local Patrick Aherne who says the company’s no-frills approach is what most people are looking for. “We’re not selling £15,000 loft conversions,” says Patrick. “This is a low-cost and simple alternative. For
just £277 + VAT you can get a ladder that slides easily up and down, as well as a proper light and some boarding to make the space safe and secure. We can also fit a draft-proof loft hatch if required from only £55.” The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call-out charges. Patrick provides a free guarantee on all parts and labour too. For a free survey and quotation with no obligation, contact More Than Loft Ladders now!
