HOVE PARK
HAPPY NEW YEAR ALL RESIDENTS OF HOVE PARK!! We trust you had a lovely Christmas and we would like to wish you all a very happy and prosperous New Year! Due to printers being closed over Christmas, I am actually wishing you that well before the festivities have even started so it does feel a little strange.
Page 5 Vet Tip Page 7 Friends of Hove Park Page 9 Health TIP
That said, New Year is a great time toreflect on the year just gone and make plans for the up-and-coming 12 months, so write down where you want to be this time next year and stick it to the fridge and see how close you can get! We have the usual mix of local items for you this month, including the second in the series of blogs by Sir Patrick about his walks in Hove Park. If you would like to send us your own blog, or have any comments on anything else in the magazine, we’d love to hear from you. If you get this edition through your door before New Year’s Eve, have a great celebration; if you get it afterwards we hope you have recovered!

HE IS JUST GETTING OLD! Less of the "he's just getting old!", and more of the "I think he is suffering dementia - can you help us?" Our lack of understanding of human dementia is a current hot topic. We fail to diagnose it early enough, and fall short in its management. David Cameron recently referred to it as “one of the greatest enemies of humanity", and said, “We should treat this as a disease rather than as some natural part of ageing." Canine dementia is also under-diagnosed. Changes in behaviour patterns noted by the owner, which cannot be attributed to another disease process such as high blood pressure or kidney diseases, are common, but tend to be lumped under: "He's just getting old!" The changes generally fall into one of the following categories: • Appearing lost or disorientated, going to the wrong door, or standing at the hinge side of the door. Aimlessly wandering around. • Loss of house training. • Not greeting the family, not recognising frequent guests, and seeming disinterested in household change. • Generally sleeping more but awake more at night and often vocalising.
To book a place or for more information go to, Facebook search: Art Classes BN3 or call 01273 505201 www.artclasseshove.co.uk
As canine dementia is very similar to Alzheimer's, we can learn a lot of what they must be experiencing. Not just lack of memory and loss of learnt behaviours, but also anxiety and insecurity that is so bad they choose to not socialise or exercise which compounds the problem, as well as postural instability and limb incoordination, leading to falls and physical deterioration. Your dog’s wobbly gait may not just be associated with arthritis but also dementia. There are many easy management options that can dramatically change your dog’s life, such as nutrition changes, and supplements that can improve their cognitive function. There are inexpensive toys to stimulate them mentally, which is known to slow the disease. Physical therapy in the form of massage, and performing low impact obstacle courses, will aid their muscular strength and coordination. And finally one in three people benefit from starting anti-senility medications; similar medications are available for cats and dogs.

HOVE PARK The monthly update from The Friends of Hove Park...
THE FRIENDS OF HOVE PARK - plans for 2015 I'd like to start by wishing a very happy New Year to all our readers. At our AGM we said goodbye to our ranger, Charlie Yates. His place has now been filled by Garry Meyer, who is also the ranger for the Three Cornered Copse, and we extend a warm welcome to him and look forward to working together in 2015. The Friends are now planning activities for 2015. Our major events will again be an Easter Egg Trail on Easter Monday 5th April, and a stand at the Martlets Carnival on Spring Bank Holiday Monday 25th May. Further details will be posted on our website when available. Another date for your diary is 28th March, when Hove Park Miniature Railway will have its first public running day of 2015. The dates for the rest of the year can be found on the website. The dates and times for our 2015 gardening sessions are not yet finalised. If you would like to help, please let us know which days of the week would be convenient. Information on the above items will also be posted on the notice boards in Hove Park. Now the nights are longer and the night-time illumination therefore more noticeable, you may have wondered about the unusual green lighting in the centre of Hove Park. In 2009 the council commissioned state-of-theart colourful lighting schemes for four locations - the Madeira Drive Colonnade, Trafalgar Street underpass, London Road viaduct, and Hove Park. LEDs were used for their versatility, lower energy consumption and carbon emissions, and reduced maintenance requirements. The Hove Park scheme, funded by a section 106 agreement between the council and Lloyds/TSB, installed green lighting on the section of the Droveway from the City Park offices and along the path across the park to Goldstone Crescent, with the aim of creating an attractive atmosphere and safer and more inviting night-time environment. In the New Year we will be looking at

potential improvements to the park and considering possible sources of funding. Section 106 money resulting from the One Hove Park development at the southeast corner of the park is due to be released in March. Some could hopefully be used for projects put forward by the Friends, and we would welcome suggestions for our wish list. For further details of the Friends and to contact us, see our website www.FriendsOfHovePark.org.

HOVE PARK Introducing the next ‘healthy living’ article written by local personal trainer and nutrition adviser Mary Henderson...
BEATING THOSE JANUARY BLUES Firstly, let’s get detoxing straight. This won’t cheer anybody up. Your body is equipped with the best detox tools for free, and drinking nothing but green sludge is going to do nought else but hinder it. If you cut down on the usual suspects (alcohol, saturated fats, processed junk) and eat a balanced healthy diet (plenty of fruit, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, dairy, good fats, and water) your body will have everything it needs to do the job. With detox done with, I want to talk about mood-boosting omega 3s, essential fatty acids found in oily fish, some nuts, green leafy vegetables and certain vegetable oils. They are a super cool functional food, with heaps of benefits such as protection from cardiovascular disease and supporting the development of babies during pregnancy and breastfeeding. What is particularly interesting is the role they have to play in maintaining our brain health. They help in maintaining our memory and aid the prevention and treatment of depression. Current research is looking into the possibility that a deficiency in omegas 3 (whilst
having too much omega 6) could be leading to a rise in degenerative illnesses such as Alzheimer’s. So if you’re going to go on any diet post-holiday glut, why not try the Mediterranean diet with a delicious fish-inspired supper. Steering clear of the fad diets and dishing up some omega 3s for dinner is a surer way of beating those January blues.

HOVE PARK ... NEVILL ROAD elcome toPAST the bruary edition of veways Gardens This photo was taken in 1915. The soldier was running on the narrow country lane which led from Hove to West Blatchington and Hangleton, with the Goldstone Pumping Station behind him. Beyond the small car was Goldstone Farm, Hove Park and open ground which is now the site of Shirley Drive and adjoining roads. The country road was to remain like this for another 17 years.

them. In about late June/July, you’ll find a lovely crop of salad potatoes that you can just dig up as and when you want them. Easy, huh? If the whole crop’s dug up by the end of July, why not use the space to grow a range of gorgeous late summer flowers – Rudbeckias, verbenas, asters, grasses etc, that will keep you smiling through the rest of summer and well into autumn. I was at a meeting recently with the council Parks department in Preston Park and I’m chuffed to report that there’s a strong commitment to planting some banks of wild flowers in the park and some native shrubs and trees. Both of these measures are great news for us and local wildlife. Thanks to the Regency Society for this image from their photographic archives, The James Gray Collection. Introducing the next in a series of park observations written by Sir Patrick - a literate Lhasa Apso...
SIR PATRICK ON HOW DOGS SUFFER: SPECIAL DIETS THEN SPECIAL COLLARS Now as any pooch with his paw on the pulse will know, the dog-fart is a powerful weapon in the canine armoury. Used strategically, meaning under someone’s chair, it is most effective in dislodging Humans from the Internet and getting them to gasp for fresh air. When in need of a walk I have resorted to this tactic many a time but, alas, it backfired badly (excuse the pun) when I heard the Female tell the owner of a husky down in the park that I had a ‘sensitive’ stomach and that she planned to put me on a ‘special diet’. The husky fixed me with china blue eyes and I could swear he was chortling. For a dog who likes nothing better than licking clean the foil tray of a chicken tikka masala, the new regime of bland pap caused desperation. It was warm still this autumn and I would race from one picnicking couple on the slopes of the park to another in the hope of cadging something rich and spicy. Then one day an encampment of ladies set up the mother-of-all-picnics at the far end of the sward where the trees are. Dressed in long black gowns with scarves

wrapped round their heads, they tended pots and pans that emitted the most delicious aromas. As I raced in their midst, the gowns ballooned upwards, like starlings adjusting their perch; small, headscarved children stretched out their hands to stroke me, but I was too set on getting closer to mecca. Just as it had been reached, cries of ‘Unclean, unclean’ reached my ears. Now, I should say that Sharon had just ‘done’ me in her mobile grooming van. I was looking as pert as a poodle and fluffy as a bichon. The last thing I wanted was anything unclean near me. So with reluctance I hoofed it back to the Female who said I was a ‘disgrace’ and an ‘embarrassment’. That night though the diet was dropped. So, did all you canines enjoy a bit of Christmas cheer? After tearing open a lot of presents, few of them mine, I found an illuminated dog collar. You see, given the time of year, the Female has taken to walking down to Hove Park in the dark. At 6 of an evening the place is pretty busy; illuminated shoes run past us in ones or pairs, fireflies dart about on the grass which turn out to have dogs attached to them, faint lights whizz towards us out of the gloom and cycle past. When rings of luminous gold could be seen capering around in the mist, attached to two schnauzers, she who is disobeyed had to have one for me. So here I am, bent on escape, ready to roam, but with that collar visible at all times. Happy New Year, everyone, or as they say on the borrowmydoggy website, High Paws. These observations were made by Sir Patrick, a Lhasa Apso who has his own dogwalking blog, doggytalkdalkey. blogspot.co.uk. The Female is local resident Sheena Vernon.

One of the oldest established businesses in Hove...
BUNGARD FUNERAL DIRECTORS SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITY FOR 108 YEARS. Bungard Funeral Directors have seen five generations of Bungard family lineage at the head of the firm. The 1st generation In 1906, Oliver Bungard, a Monumental Mason, conducted the first funeral on 7th April that year. Growing with the 2nd, 3rd and 4th generation Oliver Bungard’s two eldest sons, James Oliver and Ernest, joined the firm on leaving school and when their father died in 1919 carried on as partners until Ernest died in 1928. Ernest’s place was taken by younger brother and youngest son of James Oliver, Hervey Arnold, in 1922. In 1930 they employed their brotherin-law William Wilmer who worked for the firm for the next 30 years. James Oliver died in 1941, at which point the business was run under the direction of Hervey Arnold until his retirement in 1971. In 1939 Leonard Whittle, who married one of James Oliver’s twin daughters, Margaret, joined the firm. During the war Margaret took Leonard’s place in the business. Rupert Hervey Bungard, Hervey Arnold’s son, joined the firm in 1970 and became a director of the firm in 1971. Rupert retired in 2000 after 30 years at the family firm. The current team and 5th generation The current director team established when James Whittle joined in 1968 and became Joint Managing Director with Rupert. James retired after 44 years with the company in 2012 and handed the reins over to his youngest son Richard as the fifth generation of the Bungard family lineage to join in 2011. Richard has joined at a particularly exciting time for the business. Richard’s key challenge is to ensure that

the business, and also, importantly, Bungard Funeral Directors’ location, meet modern customer needs but preserve the history and tradition of the property and the family. In the early years of the business a Chapel of Rest was not required as families usually laid their deceased at home. As this tradition changes, the need for a chapel became apparent and therefore renovation took place to include a chapel. Since Richard joined, the entire shop front and chapel have been updated with a modern clean look and soon the shop signage will reflect the new modern branding that has also been introduced, with the new website and also Funeral Director’s iPhone app that is the first of its kind in Brighton & Hove. Bungard Funeral Directors has worked with the local community for five generations, two world wars and over a hundred years and remains committed to helping local families, charities and businesses to the best of their ability.

UPDATE FROM THE FRIENDS OF THE THREE CORNERED COPSE On 22nd November, we had our last work day of 2014. Despite the wet weather we were delighted to have enough volunteers to plant approximately 500 daffodil bulbs at the top of the copse near to King George VI Drive. This will make a fabulous display next spring and complement the daffodils on the raised bank which borders Dyke Road Avenue near the roundabout. Our ranger, Garry, put down some wood-chippings round the base of the natural wood bench at the top of the green. Due to its popularity the ground beneath the bench had become very eroded. In addition, we cut back some of the brambles along the edge of the green slope that borders the woodland. This is an ongoing job as they do grow back very quickly. During the break the volunteers enjoyed a warm drink and mince pie. In the New Year, the Friends Group will meet up again on Saturday 31st January 2015. The work day starts at 10.00am until 1.00pm, always gathering at the bench at the bottom of the green slope, just in front of the grove of silver birches.

At future work days, we hope to lay wood chippings in the areas which tend to become waterlogged and carry out a general tidy-up of the area just below the bottom twitten (near the cross pathway between Woodland Avenue and Woodland Drive). We also hope to take out the rather dilapidated, rusty and bent “No Tipping” sign and its base. As the existing perch bench has proved so popular with our visitors, in the New Year we hope to install another perch bench near the top of the copse, again in a location which provides a good view of the area right down to the sea. Wishing all Friends and visitors of the Three Cornered Copse a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
