HOVE PARK PERSON...KAREN ORMEROD Karen Ormerod lives on Old Shoreham Road. She runs Elite Tutors Sussex, which provides one-to-one home tuition for children. How long have you lived in the Hove Park area? I have lived in Hove Park for about 18 months now. I returned to the UK four years ago, after working in some top international schools in both Singapore and Hong Kong. RUN A MARATHON FOR MARTLETS

MP FOR HOVE Peter Kyle was re-elected on 12th December as the Labour MP for Hove.

Martlets has London and Brighton Marathons and Brighton Half Marathon places available for runners keen to set a New Year goal for themselves and help raise funds to change lives for local people living with terminal illness and their families. Now is the time to step up training and join #TeamMartlets by taking a place to run one of three high profile spring marathons. Running a marathon is a huge accomplishment and signing up to fundraise for a charity can help runners to stay motivated. Martlets will be there to support its runners every step of the way including providing fundraising help and a branded sports vest to wear. DIET RESOLUTIONS...PAUSE FOR THOUGHT I’ll start with these few statements that easily get lost in diet debates. Eating more vegetables is generally good for you. Eating less meat is generally good for you. Eating too much or too little of anything is generally bad for you. There’s no such thing as a detox bar not consuming so many toxins for your liver to get rid of. If you’re embarking on a new year regime, think ‘what do you want to get out of it?’ To shift Christmas excesses? To lose some longer-term weight gain? Or to make some lasting health improvements? Here’s some points to bear in mind. • Check labels for nutritional content. ‘Vegan’ and ‘free from’ doesn’t automatically make it healthy. Action on Sugar and Action on Salt have lots of useful resources. • Check diet claims. For example, that humans were designed to eat only plants or only meat. These are largely theories. Humans ate whatever they could find in order to survive and have guts and teeth for both. Life is very different now. • Beware absolute statements. If you’re quitting ‘sugar’, what does that mean? Added sugars? Snacks and ultra-processed foods? There are naturally occurring sugars in many wholesome foods. Sugar isn’t toxic.

• Are you cutting out a food group? Why? Will you replace key nutrients? • Gluten isn’t toxic to over 90% of the population. • Yo-yo dieting has been found to encourage weight gain long-term. New habits can take 12 weeks to form. Success means thinking longer term. • And finally, always use authoritative sources such as the British Nutrition Foundation, the British Dietetic Association or the Vegan Society.

HOVE PARK News from the Friends of Hove Park...

HAPPY NEW DECADE The start of the Twenties is a good time to reflect on some of the changes (for better or worse) in the park in the last decade and look forward to the future. Due to financial cutbacks there are unfortunately fewer gardeners and most of the flowerbeds have been grassed over. Despite this the park has continued to retain its Green Flag and it was good to see some new planting last year. The miniature railway is always a great attraction and benefits from its smart new tunnel. The popular cafe looks forward to being re-invented. Of course the bilingual school at the edge of the park was a major change. There have been many changes on the sports and fitness front, mostly improvements. The bowling green and pavilion closed, remaining empty and forlorn until Riptide Health and Fitness took over and turned them into a hive of activity. The smart new 3G football pitch and upgraded remaining tennis courts are well used and the organisations now running them have put their futures on a sound footing.

The Brighton BikeShare Hub has been another addition to the park encouraging an active lifestyle. Outdoor table tennis tables have increased the free facilities for all ages. Vandalism is an issue but the children’s playground is currently looking in good shape and the broken metal outdoor gym apparatus has been removed with some new wooden equipment installed. As well as organised events including Healthwalks and the ever popular parkrun (and new junior parkrun), the park is busy all year with people engaged in different active pursuits (see 2018 wintry photo). The Friends of Hove Park didn’t exist ten years ago but since its formation in 2013 has been instrumental in various planting around the park such as the wildflower mound, Purple4Polio crocuses, wildlife whips and apple trees, and in inaugurating several community events. In 2020 the Friends will be holding another Art Festival on June 20th (Midsummer’s Day) and 21st. As dusk is later there will be a children’s parade early Saturday evening instead of the torchlight procession. The Friends are also planning to hold another Easter Egg Trail and Easter Bonnet Competition and autumn Fun Palace. So best wishes to all for the new decade. It will be interesting to see what it brings for the park. Hopefully, whatever challenges may arise, with the support of the community the park can go from strength to strength. Friends of Hove Park

HOVE PARK MINIATURE RAILWAY

Regular users of the north end of Hove Park will know that it houses a loop of narrow gauge train track, and that on weekends between March and October, a range of miniature engines chug around the circuit, sometimes carrying passengers for a token fare.

The club that operates Hove Park Railway today is officially known as the Brighton & Hove Society of Miniature Locomotive Engineers and was formed in 1962 and there has been a track in the park for nearly 70 years. Originally a single, short up and down section running from the current station site towards Woodland Drive, the track has gradually been extended over time into a circuit measuring over 600 metres. Sections were completely destroyed in the hurricane that devastated much of the park in October 1987. Members of the club worked tirelessly over the following winter to reopen a limited operation by the following Easter and subsequently devoted thousands of hours to restoring the railway to its full glory. Eagle-eyed passers-by might notice that each section of restored track houses a plaque naming supporters who contributed towards the costly restoration. They may also walk past and think that, at this time of year, the club has closed until the Spring, but they couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be more wrong. To operate club and public track days successfully during the warmer months, a significant amount of maintenance is required during the rest of the year. Buildings, equipment, track and rolling stock all need thorough attention so there are regular working parties on site, tackling a range of projects in all weathers, getting everything ready for the first track day of the new season. But itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not all work and no play over the winter... There are also regular social gatherings and presentations on a

variety of railway-related topics, which are held at West Blatchington Windmill. Today, Hove Park Railway is run by more than 70 enthusiastic volunteers aged between 11 and 90! Several young members have joined in recent years and they are now learning about every aspect of club activity from their more experienced colleagues, getting ready to run the club for future generations. And while the club is thriving, we would welcome more new members. The club reopens to the public on Saturday 21st March 2020. HOVE PARK News from the Friends of Three Cornered Copse...

THE TWO CORNERED COPSE At the end of November last year, more planning detail from the Toads Hole developers was published on the council planning website, including how the surrounding road networks would affect Three Cornered Copse. As we feared, the proposals are to take the edge of the corner off the North West of Three Cornered Copse to accommodate a 4.3m wide pedestrian and cycleway. This would remove a strip of dense vegetation at the top of the corner of King George VI Avenue and Dyke Road Avenue. If the council decide to grant the request to donate this land free of charge, as is proposed, then this part of the Woodland Drive Conservation Area would lose a part of our valuable habitat for insects, birds and wildlife, and the copse would lose a part of one of its corners. Only a year ago, the council declared a “Climate Emergency” in response

to the International Panel on Climate Change report, and passed a motion to “strengthen local protection and enhancement of habitats”, among other measures. The prospect of the same council approving a plan to do the exact opposite of this seems incongruous at the very least. There is still time to register comments on the planning site. (Link at the end of this article.) In the meantime the work goes on. The Park Rangers, assisted by the City Parks Ranger Volunteers, picked a wet muddy day in December to plant 130 Stanmergrown trees in an area at the top of the lawn. This area had been taken over by brambles and nettles, had become unusable, and was rapidly taking over the top of the grassy area. The Rangers cut back the vegetation, and the area now hosts native species of hedge whips, plus three elm saplings which had been planted earlier. On our last work day we also cleared the area near the coronation stone to restore the pathway that was intended to pass through the small copse of silver and copper birches. The paths are often muddy at this time of year, so a pile of woodchips was scattered across the worst parts to provide a bit of relief for walkers. It’s a quiet time for work days, due to the winter weather, but we’ll be scheduling more shortly. Until then, have a Happy New Year, from the Friends of Three Cornered Copse. “IF I DON’T SPEAK, WHO WILL?” ALFRED HUBERMAN Holocaust Memorial Day, 27th January 2020, marks 75 years since the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Brighton & Hove resident for 65 years and Holocaust survivor Alfred Huberman dedicated his life to bearing witness to the Holocaust in the hope that his own harrowing story would help future generations learn from the lessons of the past, and to show how genocide is a process which starts with hatred, prejudice and discrimination. Hailing from a close-knit Polish-Jewish family of over 50 members, only Alfred and one sister survived the concentration camps. One of the child Holocaust survivors brought to Britain at the end of the war, by 1946 he was living in Hove. He worked as a master tailor in Brighton, married a local girl and had three children. Alfred died in 2011, but his legacy is The Alfred Huberman Award to encourage young people to learn the lessons of the Holocaust and to ensure that its horrors should never be forgotten. The writing can take the form of a short essay, letter, poem or creative writing (max 500 words). Entries should demonstrate understanding of the Holocaust; how the story impacts on them; and the hopes they have for the future.

There are two categories: primary school children aged 8-11 years & secondary school children aged 11-18 years. Prizes are awarded for the most striking pieces of writing. Closing date 30 June 2020. News from the council...

COUNCIL CARBON EMISSIONS FALL Brighton & Hove City Council saw another big reduction in carbon emissions in 2018/19. Figures show the city council’s total carbon footprint was 21,793 tonnes CO2e compared with 24,965 in 2017/18, a fall of 12.7%. This exceeds a council target of a 4% reduction for the year. The figures look at emissions including electricity, gas and oil use in corporate buildings, schools and housing (communal supplies) as well as emissions from street lighting electricity and fuel usage from fleet vehicles. The council’s goal is to be carbon neutral by 2030.

COUNCIL TO CONTINUE WITH MANUAL WEEDING Brighton & Hove City Council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee agreed at its meeting on 26th November to end the use of glyphosate by its Environmental Management services with immediate effect, other than in exceptional cases to kill invasive plant species such as Japanese knotweed or to kill tree stumps. Glyphosate, commonly known as Roundup, is the world’s most widely sold weed killer, but many experts believe it causes cancer in humans while destroying the environment and wildlife. The removal of weeds in parks and on hard surfaces will instead be undertaken manually and the committee will review this approach in autumn 2020.

Cityclean have responsibility for removing weeds on hard surfaces. They have explored different options but the only effective and affordable method was manual removal. This will involve employing an additional six staff for six months during the growing season which will cost £70,000 a year, which is £33,000 more than it would cost with the use of glyphosate. A report to the council said that ending the use of pesticides on hard surfaces would be likely to mean that there will be more visible weeds for longer periods of time. However, weeds contribute to biodiversity by providing a habitat and source of food for insects. Cllr Pete West said that the Green Party had been calling for this policy for a number of years. However, he thought it was important that pavements remained weed-free to avoid trip hazards, so it was sensible to keep the new technique under review. Vanessa Brown, Conservative councillor for Hove Park, commented: “Residents like the idea of a pesticide-free city but they also don’t like to see all the weeds on the pavements. They are particularly bad in the outlying areas that have less footfall and this has been made

worse recently by the fact that all the leaves have been coming off the trees. They’ve all got caught up in the weeds and it has become a mess in some places right across the pavement and a trip hazard.” Rachel Chasseaud of City Environmental Management reported that the council had only carried out about six weeks of manual weed removal in 2019 as a test and in the winter the weeds would start to die off naturally. In 2020 the weed removal will be much better planned, using information from this year’s trial.
