HOVE PARK Your monthly update from the Friends of Hove Park...

CARNIVAL DAY IN HOVE PARK This year’s Martlets Carnival took place in better weather than last year, and was well attended. The breeze caused some difficulties, and we had to eventually peg the bottom of our banner to the gazebo. The Friends of Hove Park and the Friends of Three Cornered Copse shared a stand giving information about both groups. The stand was decorated with balloons and we gave away grow your own sunflower packs, as well as giving out free bird themed activity sheets. We also sold plants with the money being given to the Martlets Hospice. There were several different attractions during the day in the arena including a demonstration of duck herding by dogs and a Galloping Acrobatics horse display. Elsewhere in the park, the Hove Park Railway attracted the usual crowds. I discovered that as well as the two foxglove trees I knew about (one inside, one just outside the fencing around the playground) there is also one by the café. As they were in full flower on carnival day the “new” tree was easy to spot. Barry (the head gardener) told me that there were more than three planted, so there are others

still to be found. Perhaps you’re more observant than me and can find the others? The plants in the Friends’ butterfly bed at the south end of the park are now flowering well, and a temporary notice explaining about the bed has been erected by the side of it. There are large clumps of ox-eye daisies flowering in the wildflower mound. Our new subscription year has just begun, and if you’d like to join us the cost is a nominal £3 per household. Details on how to pay can be found on our website http://www.friendsofhovepark.org. We also have a Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/lovehovepark

HOVE PARK Introducing the next ‘healthy living’ article written by local personal trainer and nutrition adviser Mary Henderson...

MY TOP THREE TIPS FOR NEW RUNNERS • Wills, Probate, Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA), Deputyships • Family Law (Divorce, Dissolution, Pre-Nups, Financial disputes, Children matters) • Residential Conveyancing and Commercial Conveyancing, shop & lease sales • Personal injury - all forms of accident claims • Defending DWP Benefit Fraud investigations, Interviews under caution & Prosecutions • Criminal and Road Traffic Defence advice • Civil litigation / Debt recovery

Give it time Like anything new, we need time to adapt. Just because it feels tough to begin with, don’t write yourself off. Depending on age, lifestyle and exercise history, time to change will vary. Get some advice and take the right approach. “Couch to 5k” on the NHS website is good for beginners.

£100+VAT for a new Will to any reader mentioning this advert

Strength and conditioning (stretching) Common beginner injuries are often prevented by strength and conditioning. Even five minutes’ worth of stretching will stop tightness and aid recovery – easier running and less soreness. As for strength, your body is a complete system. If you only use some muscles and leave others to go weak, you’ll develop injuries such as crippling problems with the iliotibial band (ITB), which connects the outside of the knee to the pelvis. These are caused by weak gluteus medial muscles (upper anterior buttock) in women. There are lots of 10-minute programmes online for the core, upper and lower body. Personally, I prefer to join in a group class which gets me using all my muscle groups without thinking about it. The right gear My mind now boggles when I see people in “casual sportswear” - baggy, heavy, ill-fitting bottoms, tops and trainers – but when I think back, I did exactly the same. It doesn’t have to be expensive and you can still get kit to cover up any embarrassing bits but it will be light, breathable fabric. Don’t forget bras, pants and socks. Lastly, check your everyday footwear is not the cause of bad knees.

HOVE PARK Many thanks to local resident Nicholas Dunn-Coleman who sent us this interesting local history article...

THE ROYAL NAVY AT MOWDEN SCHOOL Soon after the outbreak of the Second World War the Admiralty requisitioned the newly-built swimming baths on Hove seafront next door to the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (RNVR) site. The swimming baths were called Hove Marina but under Naval jurisdiction became HMS King Alfred; such shore establishments were popularly known as stone frigates. Lancing College and Mowden School were added on later. So many ships were being commissioned in that era that there were not enough Royal Naval Officers to go round and so the net widened from a mostly class oriented system that had existed. According to preconceptions of the time, the reservist ‘Wavy Navy’ were not considered to be as good. The two extra sites at Lancing and Mowden were to accommodate the larger classes and longer courses required. Mowden housed the Admiralty Selection Board which had been transferred from heavily bombed Portsmouth and was also used as a reception area centre for all ‘Commission and Warrant’ (CW)

candidates. The cadets had a second health check to make sure that they were up to the required standard. The CW Ratings arrived at HMS King Alfred wearing their seaman’s ‘square rig’ uniform and those that passed the Board were issued with two white caps to be worn in place of the normal ‘HMS’ cap tally and became ‘cadet ratings’. At the Admiralty Selection Board interviews held in the Mowden Library, cadets were asked searching questions on flags, navigational lights, the rule of law and deviation etc. One of the playing fields was used as a parade ground and included a mast. Certain Naval flags were hauled up for the customary classes to be formed up for parade. The cadets were grouped into ‘Divisions’ named after famous naval figures such as Anson, Drake and Nelson. As Mowden was too small to accommodate such a large increase of CW candidates, they were billeted in various houses nearby. By 1943 the number of entrants had increased to close to 200. Field Training Officers insisted on drill and smart turn-out and assessed the qualities of individual candidates. Cadet ratings stayed at Mowden for about two weeks and if successful moved on to the next stage at Lancing. By 1945 88% of commissioned personnel were Volunteer Reserve Officers and HMS King Alfred trained over 22,500 officers. Nicholas Dunn-Coleman Article written with the invaluable contributions of local history author Judy Middleton - her excellent book on HMS King Alfred 1939-45, Tony Drury - ‘My Brighton and Hove’ website and Heather Lane LT CDR RN.

HOVE PARK PAST... GOLDSTONE WATERWORKS The approach from the south-east, 1898. The pumping station was established here in 1865 when a shaft was sunk by the Brighton, Hove and Preston Water Company. In 1873 the water undertaking was taken over by Brighton Corporation and in 1876 a second shaft was sunk and another pump installed. One pump is in each of the two buildings. It is now the British Engineerium and there was recently a fire in an outbuilding at the site. King’s Dairy, shown on the signboard, was half a mile away across the valley, in the Droveway.Â

HOVE PARK Update from the Friends of The Three Cornered Copse...

SUMMER IN THE THREE CORNERED COPSE For those of us that walk through Three Cornered Copse on a regular basis, we all agree that May and June show the woodland at its best. The cow parsley reaches head height in places and floods the air with its scent, and struggles to thrive before the roof canopy of the wood closes off the brightest of the light. The wild flowers erupt from the hedgerows, and the insects appear to begin their work. The paths are baked hard as concrete as the winter mud dries up, new tracks are worn through the undergrowth by small mammals, walkers and cyclists, and the nettles brush the passers-by, leaving a small reminder of their defences. The chorus of birdsong each morning and evening is deafening. And the variety of birds increases. Wrens, blackbirds, starlings, swallows, woodpeckers, goldfinches, crows, jays, wood pigeons all appear, clamouring to define a territory for feeding and breeding. Standing at the top of the hill looking over the woodland, a hundred thousand shades of green fill the foreground, a dense billowing cloud of leaves.

This year the lawn meadow is being mown selectively. Visitors should see a sward of longer grass among the lawns. As an experiment, the park rangers will purposely let areas grow long to allow the growth of the natural flora of the downs. This allows wild flowers to bloom, the insects to thrive, which attracts the birds and increases the diversity of the copse. (Feedback is welcome on this.) On 4th July, The Friends of Three Cornered Copse will hold the annual barbecue. So, if you see a park ranger’s van, and a group of folks gathered around a picnic table, at the foot of the meadow, please feel free to stop and say hello. We hold this event each year, weather permitting, to say thank you to the volunteers, and rangers, who have helped on our work days, to keep the copse maintained and tidy. This day is also a work day, the copse is well-used at this time of year, so there’s always plenty to do. We have the steps through the woods to restore, (the winter mud re-shapes them each year), some paths are cleared and of course the clearing of litter is a constant background task. The undergrowth takes over the coronation stone by July, so that will receive some attention. As usual, new volunteers always welcome. Please email membership@threecorneredcopse for details, or see www.threecorneredcopse.org.uk.

HOVE PARK Local resident Tony Pelling with stories from Goldstone Bottom...

TALES OF GOLDSTONE BOTTOM...THE DEVIL’S FOOTBALL I think it likely that the three best known tales of Goldstone Bottom concern the appearance, disappearance and re-appearance of the goldstone itself. One appearance story has it that the devil, concerned at the number of churches in the Weald, decided that, under cover of darkness he would cut a dyke through the Downs to the sea and thereby destroy the churches by flooding. He made a good start but his plan was foiled by an old maid who induced her cockerel to crow early by knocking him off his perch, leading the devil to believe the sun was about to appear. In his frustration he kicked out at a rock which flew over the Downs and landed in what we now know as Goldstone Valley. Well….maybe! There are other explanations but this is a good yarn so it will do for me. When William Marsh Rigden rented his farm in the late 1830s he found that the land surrounded the devil’s football and its satellites. This was a time of large population growth and also persistent speculation about the significance to the Druids of the goldstone and its associated smaller stones. As interest grew, more and more people visited the site, often trampling crops and leaving gates unfastened. At length farmer Rigden called “foul” and showed the offending stones the red card, instructing two of his labourers, Churcher and Terry, to bury the goldstone and hide the smaller ones in a pond.

ed nd Fou

60 19

Out of sight for over 50 years the stones could easily have been forgotten. Town Commissioner William Hollamby remembered them and felt that Goldstone Valley should have its namesake on display. The Parish Beadle, Mr Cornford, had witnessed the burial so he was recruited to assist in the search. However, as memory dimmed by time was not too precise, they were obliged to sink bore holes until the large stone was located and triumphantly dug up on 29th September 1900. This early 1920s picture shows the stones where they lie today. Was William Marsh Rigden the villain many believed? Certainly not. He was a well thought of pillar of local society and in March 1863 gave a party for nearly 800 children in his long barn to celebrate the marriage of the Prince and Princess of Wales. The kids consumed 800 lbs of potatoes, 600 lbs of meat, 400 lbs of plum pudding, 1,000 buns and 1,000 oranges. Reportedly 50 gallons of ale were drunk (as too were the supervising adults presumably!!!!). Clearly a good generous man, so the residents of Rigden Road, named for William, need feel no shame.

HOVE PARK Here is a great way to get some exercise and raise some money for a good cause...

BIG FUN RUN IN HOVE PARK The city’s annual 5k Big Fun Run will take place in Hove Park on Saturday 25th July at 11am. You can run for fitness, run for charity, run for fun or just run! It’s all about getting involved, having fun and enjoying the whole experience of the day. The events aren’t timed so what’s motivating Big Fun Runners is getting together with friends and family (under-5s run for FREE), doing something healthy, raising money for a worthwhile cause and enjoying the great outdoors. This is about mums with prams, dads with toddlers, groups running together, fancy dress and a fantastic fun mix. Standard entry costs £11.99 for adults and £9.99 for children aged 5-15 or over-65s. www.bigfunrun.com A local charity needs help...

YOUNG CARERS NEED VOLUNTEER DRIVERS Very few Young Carers will see themselves as Young Carers, and very few know that there is help available, or that they can ask for it.

They may also not see the benefits of letting people, particularly schools, know the situation they are in. Here at the Brighton & Hove Young Carers Team we offer a range of groups and activities for young carers throughout the year. Some are fun breaks and new experiences, whilst others are more focused on supporting young carers around specific needs and issues. Often just having the chance to spend time with other young carers can really help! Transport to these activities can be both costly and unreliable and here at Young Carers we would love to hear from anyone who would be interested in becoming a volunteer driver to enable our Young Carers to more easily access these events and keep our costs down to allow us to meet their needs more directly. The position would be on an as-needed basis with expenses paid. If this is something that you feel you could offer, please contact Elizabeth Freeman on 01273 746222.
