HOVE PARK Another historical offering from local resident, Tony Pelling...
TALES OF GOLDSTONE BOTTOM... GOING TO THE DOGS For many decades before the Greyhound Stadium was built in 1928 there had been an interest in racing dogs in Goldstone Bottom with a number of locals owning greyhounds and whippets. Regular meetings were held and whippets were raced on a straight track of about 100 yards just a few yards south of where the football stadium would eventually be built. The races generated great excitement and the noisy and boisterous punters were frowned upon by the council as lowering the tone of the town. In a local referendum (oh no!) it became clear that a significant majority of townsfolk supported the council’s objection to the development of a permanent stadium just to the north of the town boundary. Plans were already in place to extend the town limits to include the proposed development site but these were not implemented until 1st April 1928 by which time construction of the stadium was well advanced and just two months later it opened on 2nd June. (Developers 1, Council 0) The land had previously been a large and successful market garden and some plants clearly resented the change, and asparagus continued to thrive in the

kennels area and rhubarb in the car park. This early photograph was taken after these persistent previous tenants had been evicted. In the early years, ever conscious of the need to counter the widely held view that greyhound racing did not enhance the Hove environment, the company chairman, Dr Drewett, tried to bring a decent dignity to the proceedings by appearing in a pinstripe suit with a high wing collar, whilst bugler Mc Neil was dressed in a smart uniform to announce the parade of the dogs before each race. The hare driver, Maurie Elliott who worked at the stadium for over forty years, had a really tough time working a hand operated winch which sometimes jammed allowing the dogs to tear the hare apart. Maurie became expert at sewing rabbit skins together and he and his muscles breathed a sigh of relief when an electrical system was installed in 1933. Bill Taylor, who became affectionately known as “Argus Billy”, sold copies of the Evening Argus for 45 years from a pitch just inside the turnstiles until new owners poshed up the area calling it “the inner foyer” and unceremoniously booted Billy out. Hundreds rallied to his support but to no avail, and to his great credit Billy carried on selling the paper for a further 10 years from just outside the new entrance. Ninety years on it is fascinating to reflect that, whether you were among those who thought that the stadium would lower the tone of the area or with those who looked forward to a flutter on the Tote, one way or the other the entire population thought the town was “going to the dogs”. HOVE PARK The man behind the cover shots. From Stephen Batey, the eighth in a series of articles about photography...
COLOURS IN BLACK AND WHITE Following on from last month’s article, I’m returning to monochrome photography There’s more to creating a successful black and white photograph than just removing the colours, because an obvious difference in colour is no guarantee that there will be a noticeable difference in the values of the grey that the colours convert to. As an example, here’s a photograph of red roses and green leaves alongside the result of converting to greyscale in Photoshop:
Starting from the same coloured image, I produced two very different versions, darkening the roses in one, and lightening them in the other. You can also make a selection based on colour in Photoshop, and fine-tune the result; for example
making the top bloom in the right-hand photo above the same tone as the leaves and therefore disappear. The roses no longer stand out, having become the same tone as the leaves. When using black and white film, coloured filters are used to accentuate the differences between colours. If you are using a digital camera, it’s best to shoot in colour even if your camera has a black and white mode, then take control, with photo editing software, of how colour differences are handled in greyscale which is necessary if you want to realise the full potential of monochrome photography. I used channel mixer in Photoshop for the next examples but other methods are available.

The ability to control the tones to this degree gives a lot of scope for emphasising different parts of an image. This use of tones to provide emphasis and direct the eye to certain parts of the image shouldn’t be confined to the changes that colour control gives. Most black and white images need to have selected areas changed, either by contrast adjustment or lightening or darkening the areas. Stephen Batey Hove Park resident

HOVE PARK
HOVE PARK AREA This photograph was taken by Alderman AJ Clark from a rear window of a house in Hove Park Gardens. He took it on the morning of 24 May 1906, the day on which Hove Park was opened to the public. The photograph shows the newly laid out park enclosed within the wooden fence which endured until 1930. Beyond were the orchard and fruit trees of Goldstone Farm and then the narrow lane which led to West Blatchington. To the left of Old Shoreham Road you can see the Sackville Hotel (now the Hove Park Tavern) and St Joseph’s Home (now replaced by Homebase). Thanks to the Regency Society for this image from their photographic archives, The James Gray Collection. You can see thousands of more historic pictures of Brighton and Hove at www.regencysociety-jamesgray.com.

HOVE PARK Introducing the next ‘healthy living’ article written by local personal trainer and nutrition adviser Mary Henderson...
HEALTHY LIVING... FAT VS CARBS What do we understand by “low-fat”, “high-fat” or “low-carb”? Eating fat-free sugar-laden products? Or limiting our overall fat intake when the high-fat western diet of well above the recommended 35% fat is commonplace? Dietary guidelines have long recommended that saturated fat be limited, now no more than 11% of daily calories, which equates to around 25g of saturated fat for women and 30g for men. Carbohydrate should generally make up around 50% of your energy intake. These are not arbitrary figures but based on thousands of scientific studies. Contrary to the press, there is general consensus among the scientific community about dietary fat. The newspapers get hold of new studies whose aim is to add to the sum of scientific knowledge and translate them on the researcher’s behalf into wild statements such as “cocoa cures cancer!” or “exercise makes us fat!”. We have limited time to weigh up the available information and make sensible meal choices. Over-simplified, sensationalist TV programmes create anxiety and blur basic principles. If we’re talking about weight loss, reducing overall calorific intake is the aim of the game, but cutting out a food group is not healthy and will often harm efforts to shed the extra pounds. In today’s environment, food
is plentiful and exercise is not so we now have to track our energy. We need the right amounts of fat and good carbs as opposed to low-fat or low-carb diets. Apps, food labels and guides galore can help us monitor if we’re hitting those targets.

HOVE PARK A great series of events at the Brighton Open Air Theatre...
STARBOARD FESTIVAL AT BRIGHTON OPEN AIR THEATRE Tickets are now on sale for the inaugural Starboard Festival at the Brighton Open Air Theatre (BOAT) in Dyke Road Park, which runs from 2nd-17th July. Almost every theatre in the city is involved in the festival, and it features work by 23 companies. New work is also featured. Led by theatre director Ria Parry, young people will work together to create a play in a week, premiered on the final weekend in a double bill with a new play by Iman Qureshi, written for and with students at Cardinal Newman Catholic School. Each weekend there will also be workshops run by leading theatre makers. Festival Highlights include: The Illuminating Times of The Darkling Society A show for 6-year-olds that starts long after bedtime (Sat 16 July, 8.45pm, £7) Little Wing A coming-of-age tale for those aged 4+ (Sun 10 July & Sat 16 July, 2.30pm, £5) Danny the Champion of the World
Working with the city’s major cultural institutions, Starboard Festival features some of the best national theatre made for children and young people. Young people will get to showcase their talent too with schools performing some of Shakespeare’s classics. Some outstanding youth theatre groups are presenting work old and new about what it is like to be a young person in 2016. The idea for Starboard Festival was sparked at the opening gala for the BOAT in May last year, attended by local theatre maker Naomi Alexander. Listening to the incredible story behind the creation of BOAT, she felt moved to do something to build on its success. “The space itself is magical, a theatre-maker’s dream. I wanted to do something that would enable children and young people to discover this magic for themselves,” says Naomi.
Danny The Champion Of The World Roald Dahl’s classic, performed by the popular Illyria Open Air Theatre (Wed 6 & Thurs 7 July, 4pm, £7) Grass A quirky show featuring worms, slugs, snails and ant dancing (Sun 3 July, 1.30pm & 3.30pm, £7) Macbeth Performed by local youth theatre Windmill Young Actors, with 101 performers (Sat 9 July, 7.30pm, £5) How to be a Superhero An immersive show combining magic and storytelling, for anyone aged 4 and above who has ever wished they can move things with only the power of their mind (Sun 17 July, 2pm & 4pm, £7). HOVE PARK Here is your regular update from the Friends of Three Cornered Copse...
ARTISTRY IN THREE CORNERED COPSE Our latest work day was on 21 May; our thanks to the “friends” who turned out on a vaguely inclement day to help our Park Ranger with a diverse list of jobs. The majority of the work involved wheel barrowing wood-chips to cover the newly paved pathways at the top entrance. In autumn and winter these paths are quagmires of mud; the chalk has raised the path level, hopefully above the shallow water table, to enable access during the wet weeks. Thank you to those passing by, who took the time to talk and welcome this improvement as we worked. The chalk was shipped and laid by a community pay-back team, who deserve our thanks for doing the heavy work. Sycamore trees in the copse are abundant, and are fast growing, from the numerous seedlings that find it easy to establish themselves on the woodland floor. Some of our time on the workday was spent cutting back the voracious growth as they threaten to impede the steps and paths through the woods. The sycamore has had a controversial reputation; gardeners dislike them because of the large volume of foliage they shed in autumn, and the thousands of seedlings they produce, but they are Three Cornered Copse by Nate Cordery

planted frequently to quickly establish shady areas in large landscapes. They are a relative recent immigrant to the British Isles, becoming established in the early 1800s, but continuing to thrive ever since. Insects and birds now depend on them, so they are an established piece of our woodland ecology. A few weeks ago one of our members bumped into an artist in the copse, drawing the view from the top of the meadow, south towards the sea. This turned out to be Nate Cordery, a local artist, who has captured the view superbly, the wall of green shrubs and trees bordering the meadow, with the sea in the distance. The copse picture is part of Nate’s ‘En Plein Air’ series. He is putting together a series of works captured in the open air, mainly in local locations. He’s done work over on Green Ridge and in Stanmer Park, for example. The copse work was done in soft pastels on paper; he also works in water colours and in acrylic paint on board. To see these and other works by this local talent, look at Nate’s Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/ natcordery). Our next work day is on 23 July, all welcome. Bungards have teamed up with experienced bereavement counsellor, Eve Miller, to offer two free counselling sessions. Eve has been practising as a counsellor in Hove for over 10 years and was previously an accredited bereavement counsellor for Cruse Bereavement Care and helped launch the aftercare service. In addition to offering emotional support Bungards have also teamed up with Home & Company, a local home help organisation, to offer practical help in the home. Home & Company will provide up to four free hours of their service and can provide help with shopping, cooking, laundry and any other help around the house that is needed. “At Bungards Funeral Directors we believe that we have an important responsibility to care for our families, not just by offering support during the funeral, but also providing aftercare in the difficult days, weeks and months that follow,” says Richard Whittle, Managing Director. A recent report by the National Council for Palliative Care said that 75% of people who have been bereaved
Eve Miller
said they didn’t get the support they needed. After the inevitable busy period immediately following someone’s death it can be particularly lonely and difficult to get back to doing the things you did. By offering aftercare in the form of counselling and practical home help, Bungards hope to help with the grieving and healing process. Bungards, 90 Sackville Road, tel 01273 820018.

HOVE PARK News and events from around Hove Park...
HOVE PARK ACTORS CHOSEN TO PERFORM AT NATIONAL THEATRE Hove Park School are very proud to announce that the school has beaten off stiff competition from 500 other schools, youth theatres and professional theatre companies to perform at the National Theatre as part of their Connections Festival celebrating youth talent. and Max Bower will tell the story of Tom, who dreams of being kissed, but he’s not sure whether by a man or by a woman, and he feels he should choose pretty quickly. Director Tania Banks said: “Ours is a city rich in diversity, which also reflects our student and staff population. Citizenship was a play that connected with us all as it communicates the themes of sexual identity, which are so relevant to the lives of young people. Friendship is also deeply rooted within this production and we have bonded on- and off-stage. We are absolutely over-themoon to perform at the National as this really is the stuff that dreams are made of.”

HOVE PARK News from a little further afield than Hove Park...
i360 TO OPEN THIS SUMMER Opening this summer (the date was still to be announced when we went to print), British Airways i360 will be the world’s tallest moving observation tower and first vertical cable car. Located at the foot of the West Pier, visitors will be able to glide gently up to 450ft to enjoy 360° views of up to 26 miles across Brighton & Hove, the surrounding South Downs and the Sussex coastline. Conceived and designed by Marks Barfield Architects, creators of the London Eye, the 162-metre high visitor attraction has a fully enclosed, hand crafted, futuristic glass viewing pod with room for up to 200 visitors. As guests enjoy the unfolding views, they can move freely around the pod and even enjoy a glass of Champagne during their flight. The i360 will offer a complimentary app for visitors to find out more about how the tower was built, discover the fascinating heritage of Brighton, Hove and Sussex and pick out landmarks they can see during their ‘flight’. A host will be available on board to assist guests and answer any questions. During the evening BA i360 will transform into the Sky Bar, and will host a calendar of exciting events throughout the year. The beach building, at the base of the tower, includes a stylish 400-seat brasserie with sea views and a beachside terrace, where visitors can enjoy signature dishes created by the talented duo of Josh Stanzl and Steven Edwards, winner of MasterChef: The Professionals, using local ingredients. Visitors will be able to enjoy afternoon tea in the i360’s heritage tea rooms, housed in a replica 1866 West Pier toll booth on the upper esplanade with sea views. The beach building will include a gift shop; an exhibition; flexible hospitality rooms and an indoor kids’ play zone. The beach building and the tea rooms will be open to the general public as well as i360 riders. The i360 will be open all year round, except for Christmas Day and a week in January when it will close for maintenance. A visit is expected to last around one hour (or longer if you are dining), including a pre-ride
