HOVE PARK This month we are delighted to feature local resident Derek Green...

HOVE PARK PERSON : DEREK GREEN Derek Green lives in Lloyd Road and is a member of the Brighton & Hove Society of Miniature Locomotive Engineers (B&HSMLE) who operate the Hove Park Miniature Railway. How long have you lived in the Hove Park area? My wife and I now live in the family house and are the third generation to do so. I spent much of my formative years here and, before that, I was familiar with the area through my grandparents. What do you most like about living here? I love the fact that it still retains a very rural feel and the comparison sedate Hove has with its brash, energetic neighbour, Brighton. Is there anything in the area you would like to change? The parking charges are a deterrent to encouraging people to move freely in our city and feel welcomed. In our previous home, they proved an embarrassment whenever we had visitors. How long have you been involved with the Hove Park Miniature Railway? I have always been interested in steam locomotives but was too young to join the club so my father had to join to enable me to do so when I was 12. In the club archive material there are photos of me in short trousers!

How can people get involved with the Hove Park Miniature Railway? We are always on the look out for new members – no engineering experience is necessary. Any member of the public is welcome to come along to one of our track days and have an informal chat with any of our committee members or they can contact my wife, Nikki, our Club Secretary, on 01273 506013.

What do you enjoy most about your work with the locomotives? Apart from it being a very satisfying hobby, I love the camaraderie and buzz from track days. It is wonderful to see all the happy smiling faces of the passengers of all ages as they alight at the end of their journey. We have ‘Wrinklies’ days monthly during the running season which enable members to have some fun on a more social basis.

HOVE PARK Your monthly update from the friends of Hove Park...

GARDENING IN HOVE PARK The wildflower mound planted with the rangers in 2014 produced an attractive first year display but has not progressed as well as hoped this spring so we decided to supplement with further plants. It has also unfortunately suffered damage from children riding bikes over it. A low fence has now been erected around the mound to prevent further damage. The disintegrating temporary noticeboard has been removed and Garry Meyer, our ranger, has made a rustic plaque illustrating some of the wildflowers. Garry supplied over 600 wildflower plugs and we began planting on the morning of May 9th. Unfortunately we were then on the receiving end of an unexpected deluge so with everyone drenched we abandoned until another day. At least those we did plant were well watered in! The flagpole bed is looking very colourful with the wallflowers we planted last year although some have been damaged or gone missing. We have added a few other plants to fill the gaps and are intending to plant later with specimen shrubs.

Artist/Illustrator

To make maintenance easier the butterfly bed is being given a wooden edging and the black grass ‘antennae’ have been replaced with black bricks. We will shortly be planting the butterfly wings with colourful annuals. The park gardeners have been carrying on their sterling efforts to keep the park looking beautiful despite the effects of financial cutbacks. Our gardening group volunteers have been able to provide some limited assistance and it would be great to have more people to help with this. Hove Park has recently been inspected for the Green Flag award and we hope for success in retaining the award for yet another year. HOVE PARK Introducing the next ‘healthy living’ article written by local personal trainer and nutrition adviser Mary Henderson...

THE FOOD REVOLUTION

Have you visited the Pavilion Restaurant at Singing Hills?

Last month saw Jamie Oliver celebrate his Food Revolution campaign. It aims to tackle the current crisis where we’re seeing 42 million kids worldwide under the age of five either overweight or obese.

Special Summer Lunch Menu Available Monday-Saturday Two Courses £10.95 / Three Courses £13.95 Starters: Thai Salmon Fishcakes Soup of the Day Chicken Liver Pate & Toast Main Courses: Beer Battered Cod & Chips Home Cooked Gammon Ham, Egg & Chips Char Grilled Chicken, with Sun Dried Tomato Salad & Basil Pesto Home Made Beef Lasagne with Salad Garnish Desserts: Sticky Toffee Pudding Fresh Fruit Salad Dessert of the Day Also available: Daily Specials Board, All Day Breakfasts, Bar Snacks, Sandwiches & Baguettes

Sadly we know that obesity in childhood greatly increases a child’s risk of developing chronic diseases in adulthood. The UK came up with the School Food Plan in 2013 headed by restaurateurs Henry Dimbleby and John Vincent, who own the successful Leon restaurant chains. The crux of the plan is to bring about a school culture where children enjoy and understand the importance of food from seed to table. The business expertise, along with those of nutrition and education specialists, meant a framework for raising food standards whilst bringing down meal costs was created. The other key to the plan was educating and involving children in the process of food growing and meal design. What research has found is that children who enjoy a better diet and schools that whole-heartedly embraced this approach enjoy better academic success. Children will eat vegetables that they’ve lovingly grown themselves. The School Food Plan provides lots of information for people coming at this issue from all angles – teachers, parents, caterers, councillors. Support is growing and joining forces means we can overcome the barriers from making this vision of healthy happy children in a world where we are not disconnected from the food we eat and where food is celebrated.

Introducing the next in a series of observations written by Sir Patrick - a literate Lhasa Apso...

SIR PATRICK ATTEMPTS TO OPERATE ON A HIGHER PLANE Ohmm. Woof (oops). Ohmmmmm. This is me being mindful. I’m supporting the Female in her latest fad. We’ve had to escape Hove Park and go to the Three Cornered Copse. There was too much mindless stick throwing and ball catching there, not to mention untranscendental bum-sniffing and leg cocking. Oh, but this is so beautiful: fresh, limey leaves, great clouds of them, unfurling on the branches; a rootstrewn path winding through closely packed tree trunks, sunlight filtering down to the ground, lighting up billows of cow parsley from which the stems rise like a host of... well, something or other. ‘Look,’ says the Female as we reach the meadow. ‘These forget-me-nots are so delicate, they could be escapees from a Laura Ashley curtain.’ I pant and excitedly examine them. ‘Oh wow, the daisies, look how they expand when they open to the sun!’ They are scattered across the sward as if someone has thrown them there. Both of us are really getting into the whole mindfulness thing.

56a Boundary Road, Hove BN3 5TD

01273 424444

After a turn across the meadow we re-enter the wood. ‘Do you see how the cow parsley gives way to brambles where it’s dark?’ she asks. More panting and looking excited. ‘Look at the elder bushes, I can see now why ground elder has the same name, the leaf is identical.’ More panting even though this is the most boring observation I’ve ever heard. ‘Now what are these trees?’ she asks, plucking a leaf. ‘Ah, see the nick at the base? This is ulmaceous plant material. The seedlings probably blew over from the trees along Shirley Drive.’ It’s what? Why can’t she just say ‘elm’ like a normal human being? ‘Now this blossom here,’ she continues. ‘I expect you thought it was hawthorn, it’s actually blackthorn. In autumn there’ll be sloes.’ Well, can’t say I thought anything except that I wasn’t expecting a sodding botany lesson. I want to tell her that I’ve just seen a rabbit run under the brambles and a squirrel dart up a tree; I could feel the vibration of their movement against my whiskers. Oh, and there’s a black cat looking down at us from a shed in a neighbouring garden. What cheek. Now it’s time for me to go bananas and bark my head off. I’m a dog, not a monk. These observations were made by Sir Patrick, a Lhasa Apso who has his own dog-walking blog, doggytalkdalkey.blogspot.co.uk. The Female is local resident Sheena Vernon.

HOVE PARK Local resident Tony Pelling with stories from Goldstone Bottom...

TALES OF GOLDSTONE BOTTOM FROM VIOLENT VALLEY TO PEACEFUL PARK Today our beautiful park is generally a peaceful and happy place, but it was not always so. In 1793 England and France were at war and the might of the British army was concentrated along our south coast against the possibility of a French invasion. The military camp established in Goldstone Bottom grew to over 15,000 men and over the next two years significant military manoeuvres were carried out at the site. In those days soldiers provided their own food from an allowance of 4d a day and after two years of war and a bitterly harsh winter, food supplies had become scarce and expensive. So dire was the situation in early 1795 that 500 soldiers of the Oxfordshire Militia encamped near Seaford mutinied and rampaged through food stores, sharing their booty with the local poor. However, the mutiny was soon quashed and the ringleaders faced a court martial. Six were sentenced to be flogged and the two leaders of the group were to face execution by firing squad, the sentences to be carried out on 13th

June 1795 at Goldstone Bottom. The accompanying photo of the site, though taken over 100 years later, may help us picture the scene if we ignore the planted trees and early paths of our park. The mutineers had widespread sympathetic support from the public. Knowing this, the military chiefs mounted a massive show of force aimed at deterring any further mutinies. They assembled 13 regiments to witness the executions. 2,000 mounted cavalry occupied the higher ground with many thousands of foot soldiers massed in the hollow of the valley. Behind them, the Artillery had their twelve-pounder guns primed, ready to fire and trained on the assembled company. At the front was the entire Oxfordshire Militia, those to be flogged, and, kneeling in front of their coffins, the two to be shot. The 12 men of the firing squad were just 6 paces away. One can sense the tension as those to be flogged came forward. Slowly and in strict rhythm the lashes were delivered by drummers of their own militia. Mercifully, after 300 lashes, the floggings were stopped by the attending surgeon who vouched the men had endured enough. At least the execution would be quicker. A short pause and then came the order - “fire. The twelve gun volley was followed by a single pistol shot as one of the men had survived the initial blast. Quicker? - well, NO for the entire gathering was then made to file past the bodies before they were taken away for burial. But that was many years ago. Thankfully our once violent valley is now a beautiful peaceful park. Tony Pelling Hove Park resident

HOVE PARK

HOVE PARK PAST... ORPEN ROAD BREAKTHROUGH - 1963 When Radinden Manor Road was laid out in 1925 as part of the building development in the Shirley Drive area, it was intended that it should continue through to Dyke Road. For some reason this did not materialise and the road stopped short at a thick hedge where it joined Orpen Road. 38 years later, in June 1963, the hedge was removed so that the road could follow its original course as a feature of the Martlets development in the Upper Drive.Â

Concerned about your home being sold to fund your future care fees? The Issue

You probably own your home as joint tenants if you are a couple and solely if you are single. For couples this means you own it wholly, jointly and severally. Ultimately therefore you do not own it 50:50 as you might have assumed. You actually own all of it together and when one partner dies the surviving partner owns it solely and absolutely. It is sole and absolute ownership that enables a property to be taken into consideration as an asset by the local authority and puts the property in danger of needing to be sold to fund care.

The Reality

The Law (C.R.A.G - charging for residential accommodation guide) allows local authorities to assess your assets to determine if you need to pay for your own care. Currently if you have assets above £23,250, you are on your own and require care, you will probably have to pay for it all - currently averaging around £800 per week. Savings, cash and income would be used first and then your property would need to be taken into consideration. You would be expected to pay for all of your care until such time as your assets were depleted to below the £23,250 threshold. You would then pay for a proportion of your care until your assets were below £14,250 - at which point all your future care would be paid for.

The Solution

For couples, simply by changing the way you own your property well in advance of any care considerations i.e from joint tenants to tenants in common and by setting up two Trusts within a properly structured Will at the same time will in most cases, prevent your home from being taken into account by the local authority altogether should you ever require care in the future.

The children and/or whoever else is also nominated as Trust beneficiaries for that particular Trust will subsequently have access to that half of the property when the surviving partner dies. The first half of the property then is 100% securely in Trust for the beneficiaries and will not be at risk. As a result of this simple strategy the survivor is protected from having to sell the property to pay for their care should they need it because it is not possible to sell just their half of the property and the Crag guidelines clearly state that the market value of half a property is £0. The second half of the property will then ultimately go into Trust for access by the nominated beneficiaries when the surviving partner eventually dies. The beneficiaries will at that stage have both halves safe and secure in Trust and will be able to share and dispose of the property according to the wishes of the settlors (the original owners of both halves). By leaving 1/2 the property into Trust on first death, the surviving partner can still sell the property to downsize if they wish and are not restricted in any way with regards to what they wish to do to or with the property - it simply means that it is safeguarded and therefore will definitely be able to be appointed to the chosen beneficiaries when the time comes. For sole owners immediately conveying at least half of your property into Trust well in advance of any care consideration and becoming a Trustee and primary beneficiary of the Trust with others nominated to become beneficiaries after your death is usually enough to take away the risk of the property being considered as an asset to be sold if care is required as the property is not absolutely owned by yourself anymore and again it is not possible to sell half a house or force a Trustee to do something that is not in the ultimate best interest of the Trust beneficiaries. Call us now on 01273 911142 for a friendly chat about how this strategy could be of real benefit to you and your family.

For sole owners the process is simply to set up a Trust now and convey at least 1/2 of your property into it which will produce the same result.

The Reasoning

When you own your home as tenants in common you actually own half each. When the first partner dies, they leave their half into their trust. The surviving partner is the Trustee of that Trust and also the primary beneficiary which means that they have complete control over the property and what happens to it.

Is your weight affecting your health? Hands up all those who feel they’re in a constant battle to achieve a healthy and sustainable body weight. How many diets have you tried and failed, feeling totally frustrated and not knowing what to do next? Having had a weight problem for 35 years, Rachel was desperate to find a way of being able to lose weight once and for all. ‘I had just about resigned myself to the fact that I would be overweight for the rest of my life, when I came across the principles of the Metabolic Weight Loss Programme. I followed these and to my amazement, I lost 3 stone in just over 3 months and then went on to successfully maintain my weight. The relief was enormous to have found something that finally worked for me.’ Rachel became passionate about wanting to help as many people as possible with their weight problems, which led her to become a qualified weight loss consultant. In the last 10 years, she has helped over 3,000 clients from all walks of life to help bring their dieting days to an end once and for all. ‘My clients’ ages range from 8 years to 85 years old, so there is hope for everyone!’

‘This isn’t an open-ended slimming club,’ says Rachel. ‘We set your target weight at the beginning and then get on with the business of helping you lose the weight, addressing any difficulties along the way, then we concentrate on keeping it off – for good!’ For those who are not able to visit, a very successful remote support service is provided throughout the UK - distance is no object!

With an average weight loss of 7-14 lbs a month for clients and hundreds of hand written testimonials, Rachel’s results speak for themselves

One of the popular aspects of the Metabolic Weight Loss Programme is there’s nothing faddish about it. There are no meal replacements, diet shakes or diet pills. All the foods on the programme are easily obtainable. Clients frequently say just how easy it is to follow, they don’t feel hungry and are not having to constantly battle with cravings. The four stages of the programme are tailored as necessary to provide the maximum results for each client. Rachel and her team give weekly one-to-one consultations, guiding you through the programme with personalised support, lots of empathy and total conviction in the success of the programme. Email support is available in between consultations.

Clients often comment on how impressed their doctors are with their results. ‘My doctor is very happy– I’ve been able to come off blood pressure and cholesterol medication,’ says one. Another doctor said, ‘All my lady patients on thyroid medication are struggling to lose weight, but you’ve lost 2 1/2 stone despite being on thyroxin – well done!’

With an average weight loss of 7-14 lbs a month for clients and hundreds of hand written testimonials, Rachel’s results speak for themselves. ‘I see real results daily, time after time I see people’s lives change in front of me.’

HOVE PARK Update from the Friends of The Three Cornered Copse...

SHELVEY AND EIFFEL TOWER BOTTLES FOUND IN THE COPSE At one of our recent Workdays we uncovered a number of interesting glass bottles, one being a Shelvey mineral water bottle. Shelvey’s Manufactury, as it was once known, produced soda and mineral water in Brighton from 1882 to 1931, and was ranked the second largest in the country. In their early years they were located in German Place, Brighton. (The street had its name changed during the 1914 war to Madeira Place). The building still exists almost unchanged. Shelvey’s were later located at Paston Works, St George’s Road, Paston Place. The second is a small glass bottle with the words Eiffel Tower Lemonade embossed into the front and Foster Clark Ltd Maidstone onto the back. It had either a cord stopper or a bottle cap by looking at the neck of the bottle. (Foster Clark Ltd was the drinks company in Maidstone, Kent, that produced this drink. Eiffel Tower Lemonade bottles contained crystals that could be mixed with water to make a drink or as a food additive

to make things like lemon meringue pie. Foster Clarks were trading from 1891 to 1965.) It is thought that the bottles might have been left by the workers building houses in the area at that time. At the April Workday we carried out some clearance work around the silver birches and put in the last of the wild flower seeds, removed some more old wire on the middle path, and carried out some work on clearing the hardcore path that runs down to Goldstone Crescent. Future Dates for Your Diary The Friends Group will meet up again for our Midsummer Work Session - Saturday 4 July 2015. The work session will be followed by our usual summer barbecue and picnic. The Workday starts at 10am until 2pm, gathering at the bench at the bottom of the green slope, just in front of the grove of silver birches. (The Autumn Work Session will be held on Saturday 26th September 2015 - 10am to 1pm.) If you would like to help, or meet the volunteers, please put the dates in your diary. We hope to see you soon. HOVE PARK Here we feature local Hove based chiropractor Back2Balance...

BALANCING ACT GIVES WELLBEING TO THE WHOLE FAMILY Sussex health and wellbeing specialists have found new ways to relieve pain and deliver a wellbeing service for the whole family. A Hove based chiropractic clinic called Back2Balance is successfully introducing families to free health check “MOTs” for small children whose sleeping positions often need careful monitoring to avoid potentially damaging bone and ligament problems. Clinic manager and owner Rebecca Nicholas gives an example of one of her family customers: “Chris, a 32 year old school teacher, saw me two years ago for lower back pain preventing his gym sessions. After a short course he reported 85% improvement and described it as a miracle treatment! He referred his wife to us and we resolved her headaches which had lasted weeks. Then his mum came in and we fixed a trapped nerve in her arm which stopped her sleeping and dog-walking. More recently Chris had a baby girl and we identified a problem with her sleeping position. The three month old baby now moves

her head freely to prevent future long term health problems.” Rebecca has been awarded a government GrowthAccelerator grant to grow her business across the community. The grant funding has allowed Rebecca to employ an external professional business advisor, Clive Bonny, as a strategic management partner. Clive is now helping the clinic to offer a service for employers. Clive says, “Back2Balance is not just helping hundreds of people of all ages and abilities every week who want a better quality of life. The clinic is currently saving Sussex employers at least £50,000 every week by reducing the costs of staff absence. More people should be asking their employers to offer this type of service. Healthy people are happier people and that means everybody wins at home and at work.” Contact Back2Balance 01273 206868 www.chiropractorsbrighton.co.uk Clive Bonny 01273 308865 Clive@consult-smp.com Pictured left: Rebecca treating baby customer.

HOVE PARK Local operator of Riverford, Stephen Spears proves his commitment to healthy eating for children...

RIVERFORD BRIGHTON SPONSOR THE CHILDREN’S PARADE This year Riverford Brighton sponsored the Brighton Festival Children’s Parade and what an amazing day we all had. Having worked frantically for the weeks leading up to the big day I had not really imagined what it would be like leading such an amazing party through the streets of Brighton. I was humbled by the boundless talent, creativity and imaginations shown by the children, their teachers and assistants in the costumes and models they had made. We spoke to hundreds of people about Riverford and our ethical approach to chemical free organic foods. They could see our fresh veg and fruit boxes, try our tasty apples and discuss how a veg box would work for them. We are a local business, with all our drivers and admin staff living locally, which means we can provide exceptional service with a personal touch. I have always wanted to promote healthy cooking, recipe ideas for our wide and sometimes unusual range of veg, while promoting food events and local places to my customers.

The easiest way to follow us locally is to Like our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/RiverfordBrighton. Helping fund an opening highlight of Brighton’s Festival calendar has been great fun and hugely rewarding. Stephen Spears
