HOVE PARK

WELCOME TO YOUR JUNE HOVE PARK LIVING!! With the festival now over we move into what undeniably should be referred to as ‘Summer’. Whether this is reflected in the weather we experience remains to be seen but with fingers and toes crossed for all intents and purposes Summer is here!!! We know the football season is now over but there is a distinct football theme this month with the Tales from Goldstone Bottom being about Brighton and Hove Albion back in the day when they were residents of Hove Park. There is also news of a footballing achievement by Hove Park School. So signing off we wish good luck to England this Summer in the European Championships and hard luck Brighton on your near miss this season just gone!! OK, so the Seagulls grew up and flew the Goldstone nest to set And I will be cheering their success as wildly as anyone. Brighton and Hove United FC was founded by its first manager John Jackson in 1901 but other local clubs objected that the name gave the erroneous impression that it was formed by uniting two former independent clubs. Precisely why “Albion” was chosen to replace “United” is lost in the mists of time but it surely can be no coincidence that an early director Albert Grinyer ran the Albion Inn in Church Road, Hove; club members Tom and Harry Gadd ran the Albion Hotel in Brighton; and shareholders Tamplins Brewery had earlier purchased the Albion Brewery in Albion Street. No contest then! After a period of ground share the Albion took sole possession of The Goldstone Ground in 1904. A few years earlier the ground had been an unused field in a market garden whose proprietor allowed local footballers to play there provided the view from his home in Fonthill Road was not obscured. The accompanying photo taken many years later shows that his wish was still being honoured. It remained so until the houses in Goldstone Lane were built.

TTOM... BE IT EVER SO ‘UMBLE up in a posh new place in Falmer where they are now on the verge of great things. Fantastic! having previously been used in Preston Park for an agricultural show.

The first stand with changing rooms behind was built on the west side of the ground and accommodated 400 supporters on 12 levels, the top one being christened Spion Kop after the famous Boer War battle, although for important matches farm carts were placed behind the Kop for additional viewing. In 1910 a stand was erected behind the south goal. It was second-hand

Until the early 1920s there was a small pond behind the north goal complete with a long pole with a metal hoop at the end to recover balls that missed the net. Moving forward to the 1930s one very keen supporter regularly took his carrier pigeon to away matches so that he could relay half time scores back to headquarters. The story is also told that when the first Albion match to be televised in colour was about to be recorded, groundsman Frankie Howard could be seen frantically painting bare patches with green emulsion. All of which is quite a contrast to the Albion of today. The club has come a long way since those early ‘umble but ‘appy days so I do hope they remember that “be it ever so ‘umble” there really is no place quite like your very first home. COME ON YOU BLUES! Tony Pelling

6 Martlets volunteers make a real difference – will you join them?

VOLUNTEERS’ WEEK JUN At Martlets, volunteers are vital. They offer counselling, spiritual support, legal and financial assistance as well as patient transport. They provide massage, acupuncture, manicures, pedicures, hair care, pampering and art therapy, all of which help local people live through their terminal illness. They help run our shops, support our events and fundraise. They arrange flowers, work in our community café, help organise our community choir, keep our gardens beautiful, sort clothes, books, bric-a-brac and, in the past 12 months, have made over 13,000 cups of tea in our hospice!

Bespoke tables to fit your space www.chickensheddesign.co.uk chris@chickensheddesign.co.uk

Our volunteers are essential to Martlets. Without them we wouldn’t be able to care for nearly 1,000 local people a year. On behalf of everyone at Martlets we want to say a big thank you to all our volunteers. Erica, who volunteers in the London Road shop: “I love meeting and mixing with all the volunteers, staff and customers. I love looking at all the things that come into the shop and doing the window displays.”

NE 2016 Gill volunteers in our warehouse in Hove, sorting through donated clothes: “The role is important as we’re responsible for making sure all the good quality items are sent out to our shops as quickly as possible. We’re also on the front line ensuring that unusual, vintage or valuable items are spotted and sent to our eBay team where they can raise even more money for the hospice. I enjoy the fact that I am helping a wonderful organisation that supports people at such a difficult time. Volunteering enables you to meet a different group of people. We also have a laugh which is great for the soul.” Martlets is much more than a hospice Martlets is changing perceptions of hospice care. Today, most of our patients receive care in their own homes. Our hospice in Hove is a popular community hub – a place where patients and their families can use our therapeutic services, drop-in clinics, in-patient unit or just sit and have a coffee in our café. www.themartlets.org.uk

HOVE PARK Introducing the next ‘healthy living’ article written by local personal trainer and nutrition adviser Mary Henderson...

HEALTHY LIVING... FUSSY EATERS It’s not unnatural for kids to show fear towards potentially poisonous novel foods. They look to mummy and daddy to guide them on what’s safe to eat. Nutrition is important at every stage of life but never more so than for kids who are developing both lifelong eating habits as well as building strong healthy bodies and brains. Just this week was another report showing that children attain better grades having had breakfast. Infants should always be weaned on veg before fruit to avoid hardwiring their taste buds preferentially for sweetness. It takes as many as 15 attempts for little ones to accept new foods, so give it time. Studies have also found that kids will eat more healthily when eating with their parents. Mealtimes should never be a drama but neither should kids rule the roost – chips and chocolate would be on the menu every time! Attempts at healthy eating are undermined if not everyone’s playing ball – Mum, Dad, Gran… Younger children pick up healthy habits more easily than the older ones. The earlier you expose an infant to fruit and veg, the more they are likely to eat in adulthood. Letting them feel involved in some small way in the cooking process will encourage them to taste their wares.

It’s tough when time is pressured and junk food ads bombard us from sofa to supermarket. But help is out there: go to the NHS or British Nutrition Foundation for reliable advice and kid-friendly recipes.

ORPEN ROAD - 1963 Last year we featured a photo of the corner of Orpen Road and Radinden Manor Road in 1963. Here is a different photo of the same site, after the removal of a hedge prior to the development of The Martlet. Local resident Hugh Robinson has sent us an up-to-date picture. The wall on the right appears in both photos, as do the Orpen Road sign and tree. Hugh says that a house in Dyke Road on the corner of Wincombe Road, with two little gabled windows, can also be seen.

Thanks to the Regency Society for this image from their photographic archives, The James Gray Collection. You can see thousands of more historic pictures of Brighton and Hove at www.regencysociety-jamesgray.com.

The man behind the cover shots. From Stephen Batey, the seventh in a series of articles about photography...

BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOGRAPHY OR LESS IS MORE When I took my first photographs black and white photographs were a lot more common than colour ones, which were very expensive. Today most people use digital cameras and produce colour photographs by default. Yet there’s a lot to be said for black and white - and not just for its novelty value. Black and white is more than just the absence of colour - it can bring a new appreciation of other aspects of the imaged objects and a new freedom to add our own interpretation to the image.

scene with some predominantly brown stumps sitting in shallow muddy brown water, but losing the colour removed the muddy association giving a tranquil view with a clean pool of water.

Whilst superficially a colour image appears to depict the real world, our response to colour brings a number of problems. Some colours are so vibrant that they dominate our attention irrespective of the overall importance of the object having that colour. A feeling that some colour is incorrect or unnatural can be unsettling. If we want to change some emphasis to give our own interpretation with the image still appearing natural, it is difficult to do so without the inevitable colour changes making the result appear false. Colours have associations - red and orange will inevitably suggest warmth, and blue cold - and it is difficult to overcome these associations which may sometimes work against the mood we are trying to create. In real life the following is a rather uninspiring

Black and white works on the principle of “less is more”. In black and white, graphic elements such as the structure of a spiral staircase have greater prominence. Texture is also more obvious so it can become easier to imagine the feel of the surface. Eliminating the colour makes it easier for you to arrange tones and masses even areas of pure black - to make a harmonious whole. It becomes easier to selectively lighten and darken areas of the image to concentrate the viewer’s attention where we want. A portrait image is often done in black and white when one wants to emphasise character. The Canadian photojournalist Ted Grant said, “When you photograph people in colour, you photograph their clothes. But when you photograph people in black and white, you photograph their souls.” Stephen Batey

HOVE PARK Here is your regular update from the Friends of Three Cornered Copse...

THREE CORNERED COPSE AT ITS BEST As the spring gets under way, Three Cornered Copse is starting to look at its best. The cow parsley stands tall, and is in blossom, sending a buttery, toffee scent to permeate the woodland, when the air is still and the foliage is at its best. There is still plenty of sunlight penetrating the higher woodland, and those of us brave enough to rise at dawn would be deafened by the birdsong that echoes through the green canopy. As the trees begin to look their best, the diversity of species in the copse becomes more evident. There is mainly beech, with many elms and birch trees, together with the ubiquitous sycamore and alder, and there is a small, but persistent, population of yew trees, particularly on the higher slopes of the woodland. You’ll find the yew trees hidden amongst the denser parts of the wood, distinctive with their dark green needles, growing on two sides of each branch. The yew is rich in mythology and history, often planted, and found, in graveyards, some say to sanitise the buried plague victims, but often many years old. In Wakehurst Place recently, a yew was discovered which dated back to mediaeval times. It’s unlikely the copse has such elderly inhabitants. They are one of our native evergreen conifers, favoured by goldcrests and firecrests for nesting because of the dense foliage in which they are clothed. At the top of the copse, the large muddy areas are now covered with chalk rubble to raise the paths, and make a passable route for the park vehicles which need to access the area from time to time. We are very grateful to the Community Payback groups who did such a splendid job of carrying many tons of chalk from the roadside. And for clearing up so well. Over the months the instant chalk effect should lessen as the path weathers and blends into the surrounding vegetation. Covering with wood chip helps of course. As a footnote to one of our previous activities, on the “Clean for The Queen” day,

our chair of the committee, Ruth Baxendale, spent the afternoon at the Palace of Westminster, as a guest of Keep Britain Tidy. Several speakers talked about the motivation of volunteer groups, and caring for our green spaces, as a thank you for helping clear the litter from our countryside. It’s good to know the friends groups exist across the country sharing the same objectives.

HOVE PARK Exciting news from Hove Park School...

HOVE PARK SCHOOL REACH NATIONAL FOOTBALL FINAL Hove Park’s Year 9 Under 14 football squad were not only the pride of their school in May, but of Brighton & Hove too as they played in the final of the ESFA National Schools Cup at the Madejski Stadium at Reading FC. Despite being defeated by an incredibly strong team from Thomas Telford School, getting so far in a national competition is an amazing achievement. The Hove Park boys have had an incredible season, also becoming Sussex champions after winning the County Cup final earlier this month. A coach full of fans including students, teachers and parents travelled to Reading and despite the heavy rain created an atmosphere of support and excitement in the stands. The match was streamed live on YouTube enabling many more of the school community to watch the game and the commentary gave it the feel of a professional game. Hove Park were given a standing ovation at the end and the boys were commended on their performance as well as being very gracious in defeat. Team manager Mark Pulling said: “It’s a fantastic achievement to have reached the final. In this competition we play against teams with a lot of professional academy

players representing their school sides. Our side only has one academy player so the boys should be immensely proud of themselves. We’ve competed against schools with better resources and facilities, which encourage them to be able to spend more time training with their teams. It’s a really positive thing for the school that we were able to take so many spectators yesterday. It shows that our school community is very strong and that our students are very supportive of their peers.”

HOVE PARK Just in case you had any inclination to drop litter...

DROP LITTER – PICK UP A FINE! People caught dropping litter, flytipping and allowing their dogs to foul in public places anywhere in Brighton & Hove now face £75 on-the-spot fines. Enforcement officers, employed by private company 3GS Environmental Solutions, began patrolling in the city in March. The new service supports the council’s strategy to encourage everyone to produce less waste and recycle more. It aims to tackle antisocial and illegal behaviour, improve the environment and reduce waste clean-up and disposal costs. Each year the council receives dozens of complaints from residents about fly-tipping, litter and other antisocial behaviour and the issues are often raised at residents’ groups and community meetings. The scheme was approved by councillors last year and 3GS was awarded the contract following a competitive tendering process. It covers fly-tipping, littering, flyposting, graffiti, dog fouling and disposing of commercial waste illegally. The enforcement officers wear body cameras to gather evidence and identify offenders. The council follows Government guidelines to ensure that any fines are issued responsibly. Officers also work with businesses, schools and other community groups to educate and raise awareness of environmental crime. They are looking out for good examples of people picking up litter and improving their neighbourhoods and there is a gift voucher reward scheme as part of the initiative. Councillor Gill Mitchell, Chair of the Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee, said: “We are often asked to take a tougher stance around antisocial behaviour such as dropping litter, fly-posting, dog fouling and graffiti. This enforcement scheme, along with the publicity and education programme, will tackle the problem head-on and send out a strong message that

deliberate antisocial behaviour which blights our city will not be tolerated.” Those issued with a fixed penalty notice who refuse to pay could end up in court and not only be ‘named and shamed’ but also landed with a much higher penalty and possibly court costs. Regular updates on how the scheme is operating and the effect it is having on improving the city’s environment will be reported to the Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee. Under the terms of the agreement, no targets will be set for issuing fines and 3GS is prohibited from paying its officers any form of performance pay, commission or bonuses linked in any way to the number of tickets individual officers issue. HOVE PARK The story of The Royal Pavilion as a World War One military hospital...

PAVILION BLUES: DISABILITY AND IDENTITY A display now in the Prints & Drawings Gallery at Brighton Museum tells the previously untold story of the 6,000 amputee soldiers who received treatment, rehabilitation and training at the Royal Pavilion during the First World War. This tale of adversity and opportunity is revealed through photographs, poetry and objects from the Pavilion Military Hospital, as well as insights into the lives and experiences of three patients. There are also panels in five of the Royal Pavilion’s rooms giving information on this moving story. Kevin Bacon of the Royal Pavilion writes: “The Royal Pavilion’s use as a hospital for wounded Indian soldiers is well known. Its use as a hospital for limbless men is less famous. It opened in the summer of 1916, and retained many of the same medical personnel who had run the Indian hospital. It continued to care for men who had lost arms and legs in World War One until 1920, when the Pavilion was returned to the Brighton Corporation. “The contrast with the earlier hospital is striking: the primary focus of the Indian hospital was to make the men fit enough to either return to the front or be invalided back to India. Although the men were celebrated for their bravery in combat, little official concern seems to have been given to what happened to those men who returned home. By contrast, the hospital for limbless men was established with the aim of equipping its patients with new skills with which to rebuild their lives. “A workshop named after Queen Mary was constructed on the northern grounds of the Pavilion, where the patients could learn new skills in carpentry and engineering. But it was not all about work: the men were also given a good deal of leisure time, and sports were regularly enjoyed. “Cricket, and the old Sussex game of stoolball, were popular in the hospital. As with the Paralympics today, technology was used to enable the men to take part

HOVE PARK News of a hall that will be available for use by the local community...

NEW HALL FOR PREP SCHOOL IN THE DROVEWAY Lancing College Preparatory School at Hove in The Droveway (formerly Mowden School) has received planning permission to build a new multi-purpose building. This has been designed for use by the local community, as well as the school. The hall will meet the school’s needs for a state-of-the-art space for assemblies, dining, indoor sports and music and drama performances, and members of the community will be able to use it for meetings, performances and indoor sport. The new energy-efficient, two-storey building will be set back from The Droveway, to the right of the existing school entrance. It will include a multi-purpose school hall, changing rooms and kitchen, a small gallery and foyer space. There will be a reconfigured school car park to enable more efficient parking. Work will start in July 2016 and is scheduled for completion in July 2017. The school will then start a programme of improvement work to the main school building.

20 YEARS OF PADDLE ROUND THE PIER Paddle Round The Pier, the world’s biggest free charity beach festival, is back this July 2nd and 3rd to celebrate its 20th anniversary. “Paddle”, as it’s affectionately known, features much more than its simple name suggests, with loads of events over the weekend supported by a huge Paddle Village full of retail, exhibitions and entertainment stages all based on Hove Lawns. With a packed programme of water and land events, there’s something for everyone to either watch or have a go for themselves. The event is still run by volunteers and, although it’s free to enter, you are expected to donate a couple of pounds on the gates - after all it is in aid of charity! The title event Paddle Round The Pier takes place on the Sunday at 2pm, but the real crowd pleaser is the “Paddle Something Unusual” at 12 noon where teams attempt to paddle the most ridiculous thing they can think of around the remains of the West Pier. In 2016 Paddle is raising funds for the RNLI, Amaze children’s charity and Surfers Against Sewage. paddleroundthepier.com
