Read about a Fiveways resident who sings in Brighton Festival Chorus…

Tim Rounding of Brighton Festival Chorus Tickets to St John Passion on Friday 3 April at 3pm range from £5 to £25 Tim Rounding lives in Ditchling Road and is a member of Brighton Festival Chorus, who will be singing at the Brighton Dome on 3rd April in their 500th performance. How long have you lived in Fiveways? I was an undergraduate at Sussex when I first moved to the area in 2003. I grew up in Yorkshire and didn’t know the city at all – it was a complete gamble - but something felt right. It turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. What do you most like about the area? It’s a terrific location and has been really handy for every phase of my life over the past few years. Its proximity to London Road station and Lewes Road meant that it was extremely convenient for getting to and from the University. I now commute to London for work, which is perfectly manageable – and you can easily walk in to the centre of Brighton. All this sounds like I want to get away from Fiveways … not so! There are some fantastic local shops, eateries and amenities right on the doorstep. Is there anything you would like to change? I’d encourage everyone living in the area to do a positive thing in 2015 to support the community spirit – be it visiting a local shop, becoming a Friend of Blakers Park, or supporting a community group. How long have you been singing with the Brighton Festival Chorus? I joined after I graduated in 2006. I’d been singing choral music since my teens and it has brought me such a lot of pleasure over the years. Tell us more about the choir and its 500th performance… Brighton Festival Chorus was founded to great acclaim for the 1968 Brighton Festival. We regularly perform with the London orchestras and across Europe. In the

past year we’ve appeared in the annual BBC Big Sing and featured on Alfie Boe’s latest album. In June this year we’re commissioning a piece to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta which we will perform in Brighton Dome with 120 school children. Our concert in Brighton Dome on Good Friday is our 500th. What will you be singing and how do we get tickets? We’re performing a semi-staged Bach, St John Passion. The audience will be very much involved. We’re taking all the seats out of the main section of the Dome and will be moving round the whole auditorium during the performance. Tickets to St John Passion on Friday 3 April at 3pm range from £5 to £25 and are available from Brighton Dome Box Office: http://brightondome.org/ event/6878/st_john_passion/. Boundary House, Ditchling Road This large rambling house was built at the end of the 19th century on the site of an old cottage which stood by the Ditchling Road toll-gate (near Osborne Road) and which in its later years was occupied by a ladder maker. The cottage was on the site of the front room to the left of the entrance door. This view shows the rear of Boundary House from the lawn of the extensive garden. Date of photograph: 30 April 1956. The house was demolished in March 1957 prior to the building of bungalows on the garden site.

a coal-getter. The getter would shovel the coal produced by the hewer into coal corves (large baskets) or tubs (small carts). He married Esther Reid at the age of 21; their first child was born in Cramlington in 1873 and they went on to have 12 children. After 17 years down the mine, he became the secretary of a colliery company, then moved to London to start a business as a coal merchant. By 1878 the family had moved to Brighton, where their daughter Esther was born in 1880. Edward had bought a business there, with Andrew Cameron: Messrs Lowther and Cameron coal merchants. The family is recorded in the 1911 census as living at 41 Ditchling Rise. Edward was elected to Brighton Town Council in 1884 and took an active part in serving the community. He was interested in trying to improve conditions for people in the area and believed they needed a pure supply of water. He joined the board of the waterworks committee and one of the main pumping engines at Brighton Corporation Waterworks in Falmer was named after him. He was also the Society Steward of the Primitive Methodist Church in London Road for over 25 years, where there was a commemorative plaque to him. He died in 1912 following a fall during a visit to an electricity works.

At the age of ten, he started working in West Colliery, Cramlington, as a trapper; this meant opening and closing the doors to ensure proper ventilation. GARDENS

15

Brought to you each month by Fiveways gardening expert Lisa Attwell...

Fiveways Gardens... Welcome to the March edition 2015 Let’s have a look at the basic principles of garden design, as now’s a good time to do a bit of re-modelling and tackle the bits of your garden that aren’t as successful as you’d like. First, you need to carry out a site analysis – what is the soil type, where are the sunny and shady areas and how do these change throughout the year, what about dry patches and, conversely, areas that rarely get a chance to dry out, and what about the prevailing wind direction?

These factors determine ‘what to plant where’. How big is the space? An accurate site survey involves measuring the width and length of the space as well as the height of boundaries. Planting that worked five years ago may be struggling now because of maturing neighbouring trees casting more shade. From the survey you can produce a scaled plan showing the area you have available, noting key fixed features such as mature plants. In our town gardens a scale of 1:50 is best; this means that 1cm on your plan represents half a metre in your garden. Decide at this stage what you want to keep. That old shed may not be pretty, but is it still useful? It could be smartened up or disguised with climbers. What about putting a green roof onto it? Try something bold, like painting it matt black. Imagine how fiery reds and rich oranges will look with a black background. Could that space be used for something else? We’re working with a client to create an amazing garden retreat at the bottom of her garden. Somewhere she can go, whatever the weather, open-fronted, but with a glass roof to keep the elements at bay. With the base plan done, it’s time to think about esoteric matters such as concept, shape, pattern and style. You can take inspiration from garden styles such as formal, cottage or modern gardens. Or you could create a more personalised design based on something meaningful to you. Once you have chosen a style it is a good idea to collect images from magazines and start putting them together, creating a mood board, or online with something

like Pinterest. This collection of images, words, colours and objects will help you refine what your garden is all about for you. The benefit of doing this is that you’ll end up with a garden that has a feeling of cohesion, with features working together rather than fighting, where the planting complements the hard landscaping and vice versa. Furthermore, it will reflect your personality and style. It’s this degree of attention to detail and consideration of materials that’s the essence of a great garden space.

BOOK REVIEW

17

BBC book reviewer and local resident,Gary Mepsted reviews another book…

Travelling Sprinkler by Nicholson Baker Serpent’s Tail, paperback, £8.99 As promised, it’s a bona fide book review this month and I’ve chosen Nicholson Baker’s beautiful and brilliant new novel “Travelling Sprinkler”. The book appeared last year and my tardiness in getting around to reviewing it should not be regarded as any kind of criticism. So many books, so little time... Poet and academic Paul Chowder, whom, if you’re a fan of the author, you will have met in Baker’s novel “The Anthologist”, has fallen out of love with verse, but he definitely hasn’t fallen out of love with Roz, his ex, who has embarked upon a new relationship with a doctor. Paul turns to his guitar for solace, spending his time writing protest songs, attending Quaker meetings, keeping fit, and wondering if he might be successful as a techno DJ. Baker’s astonishing ability to mine gold from the thinnest seam, very much in evidence in his first two novels, “The Mezzanine” and “Room Temperature”, is glitteringly present here. Nothing much of consequence occurs within the novel’s pages, but in the hands of a true writer small incidents can have a seismic effect upon the reader. Baker’s facility for showing us how life is essentially composed of small, quotidian events is nonpareil. His kookiness (yes, it’s the perfect word) never grates or seems arch, there for mere effect. Baker’s prose has a sublimity and grace which makes him a joy to read. Only those readers who value plot above all else will fail to be almost instantly seduced. Baker is on dazzling comedic form here. For my money “Travelling Sprinkler” is easily his funniest - and perhaps most moving - novel. It’s shot through with melancholy which never sours into schmaltz. The almost OCD quality that the writing possesses perfectly evokes Paul’s

character, the enormity of his loss, and his desperation at no longer having Roz in his life. In lesser hands Baker’s protagonist might be dubbed a royal pain in the ass, but Baker’s gift for communicating Paul’s humanity elevates him to a genuinely tragic figure, out of step with both himself and the world he inhabits. There’s at least a smidgeon of Paul Chowder in all of us. “Travelling Sprinkler” is a book that will delight and live long in the memory.

Charity Cake Sale

going to be the Lauren Hills Foundation ((https:// www.facebook.com/LaurenHillsFoundation) and also Whoopsadaisy (http://www.whoopsadaisy.org/)

Friday 27th March 2015

Lauren Hills are raising money for charities supporting brain injury as well as Lauren’s family. Whoopsadaisy use the principles of Conductive Education to help children with physical disabilities live life as independently as possible and are based in Preston Park.

Do you enjoy marmalade on your toast in the morning or do you enjoy jam on your scones for tea? If so, have you tried our homemade Seville orange marmalade or homemade cherry, plum, apricot and damson jams? Each year the staff of Hallifax Care, a locally based homecare agency opposite St Matthias’ Church, make wonderful cakes, jams, marmalade and lemon curd to raise money for a local charity.

Fix My Street!

With the support of the people around the Fiveways area, as well as the young people going to and from school, we raised over £1,100 last year for The Chestnut Tree Hospice for children. As well as thanking those who tried our goodies last year, we just wanted to let everyone know that once again we will be having our cake and jam sale on Friday 27th March – just in time for Easter gifts or feeding hungry children on Easter holiday.

Bumpy ride this morning? View blocked by dumped rubbish? Potholes and fly tipping are just two of the street faults that can be reported via the website www. FixMyStreet.com, along with vandalism, graffiti, dog fouling and many other common community issues. While most of us know that the council are responsible for fixing these things, we may not know which department. With FixMyStreet, all you have to do is locate the problem on a map, and select a category: the site then sends it off to the right place to get it fixed.

All reports are published on the site. Browsing your own postcode can be interesting, as you soon learn what the persistent problems are in your area, and whether or not they are being fixed. There’s also the opportunity to discuss individual reports in the comments section. FixMyStreet comes from the UK not-for-profit organisation mySociety, and is one of its longest-running and most-used services. It is just one of several projects aimed at making it easier for citizens to get things changed in their own community. So, next time you see something that needs fixing, be it a broken paving slab or a flickering street light, all you need to remember is FixMyStreet.com.

CHARITY

23

The Sussex Pet Rescue Charitable Trust

Fancy becoming a ‘Foster Home’ for a dog?... Sussex Pet Rescue is your local registered charity which re-homes and helps sick and unwanted dogs across the county. The charity is run by volunteers and raises its running costs by donations, sponsored walks, table-top sales, raffles etc. Although several veterinary practices help us by discounting fees, our vet bills exceed £25,000 per annum - a vast sum to raise. Dogs come into care for varying reasons, eg owner’s death, illness, divorce etc. Unlike most other animal charities, we place the dogs in our “foster homes” until loving homes can be found for them. This can take a few days, weeks or even months but it gives us a chance to have the dogs neutered/spayed, vaccinated and chipped where relevant. It also means we have an accurate picture of what each dog needs in its forever home, eg does it get on with cats, children, etc. We are always seeking new fosterers so if you have experience of looking after a dog, have someone at home for most of the day, own a secure garden and have a real love of dogs, please consider helping us by fostering. Obviously we pay all the necessary vet and food bills and any out-of-pocket expenses incurred. A dog currently in a “foster home” gives his story below, but we anticipate that by the time you read this, Jimmy will have found his “forever home”. What is your name and how old are you? My name is Jimmy and I am nine years old. I am neutered, microchipped and vaccinated. What breed of dog are you? I am a small/medium terrier mix. Why do you need re-homing? One of my owners died last year and my other owner now wants to travel and visit family members in Australia and the UK. No home for me now! What kind of home are you looking for? I am looking for a loving forever home with a couple/family with or

without children over five years of age. I am not used to cats and might chase them but I really enjoying chasing a ball and going for walks! Do you get on with other dogs? Yes. I was living with another dog before I came into SPR’s care and my doggy friend has already found a forever home. For further information about SPR, please look at our website at www.sussexpetrescue.org.uk. Then, if you are considering fostering for us, please telephone Chris on 01273 553735 or Marcia on 01273 551815. Thank you.

Time for a change? Successful business is seeking five self‐motivated people to work part‐time, flexibly, from home, without compromising current commitments, under the umbrella of an award winning, global, dynamic, successful company. If you have a Managerial, Sales, Marketing, Recruitment or Self‐Employed Background; or have taken a career break and wish to develop a more balanced lifestyle around your family’s needs; or need to increase your pension please call:

RECIPE

27 The next of our series of recipes by local Kitchen Coach, Sarah Stubbs

Marmalade Fruit Cake A fabulous everyday fruit cake recipe with the bittersweet taste of marmalade, the perfect weekend treat! Ingredients: 250g self-raising flour, sieved 1 teaspoon ground mixed spice 150g margarine or butter 150g soft brown sugar 1 tablespoon marmalade 2 eggs 375g dried mixed fruit 25g glacé cherries, halved 2 tablespoons milk 20g flaked almonds This cake is an old family favourite that I have tweaked over the years and as it is marmalade-making season I thought I would share it with you! I love the orangey tang of marmalade and it makes a beautifully moist cake that I have topped with crunchy flaked almonds. It keeps for about 5 days in an airtight container or freezes well, making it a great standby for visiting family or friends Method: •

Line a 2lb loaf tin with baking paper or a greaseproof cake liner.

Cream the margarine or butter and sugar together until pale and creamy.

Add the eggs, flour, mixed spice, marmalade and milk and beat together until all the ingredients are combined.

With a large spoon, fold in the mixed dried fruit and glacé cherries.

Please mention the FIVEWAYS DIRECTORY when responding to adverts

Spoon the mixture into the lined cake tin and smooth the top.

Sprinkle with the flaked almonds and cook in the centre of the oven at 160C/140C for a fan oven for 1¼ -1½ hours until a skewer inserted comes out clean.

If the cake is brown on top and still not cooked, cover with foil and pop it back in the oven for a bit longer.

LOCAL BUSINESS

Welcome to Sarah Hurst Skin & Beauty - Industry leaders in results driven Beauty and Aesthetic treatments....

Sarah Hurst - Skin and Beauty It has been quite a journey for Sarah to be achieving her dream of opening up her own salon. She has always had a passion for the industry since the age of 13 and was also very ambitious, hoping in the future to open her own chain of salons! Relocating to London from the Midlands allowed her to gain experience in a very prestigious salon at the time before relocating again to Surrey with her boyfriend, and she decided to set up a mobile business at the age of 19. This was hugely successful over the 18 months of living there as Sarah built up her customer base rapidly, offering high quality treatments in the client’s own home. Relocation came again 18 months later to Brighton and Sarah split her time between building her business in Brighton and commuting to Surrey to maintain her existing business. Sarah fell in love with Brighton and despite splitting up with her boyfriend and being in a city where she barely knew anyone, she decided to stay and make a life in this wonderful city. That was back in 1991! Since then Sarah married, had children and set up the business from a room within her house. She developed her skills constantly by attending training courses, reading professional magazines and attending trade shows to make sure that she was keeping at the forefront of this rapidly changing industry. Sarah also studied for her teaching certificate (CertEd) and taught at Sussex Downs College in Lewes for three years around her business, until she had to change things rapidly due to the demands of the business. A Studio was erected next to the house, which allowed for a further treatment room, and enabled her to take on a full time employee and leave teaching to concentrate on the business. Now, 6 years on from that transition, the business has relocated to a beautiful salon on Carden Avenue in Hollingbury, which offers a fantastic experience for the client. With 4 treatment rooms

the salon provides innovative treatments often only found in the city centre or London, with the luxury of easy, free parking. Sarah herself now has 27 years of experience and her fabulous team each bring something unique to the business. Catch up with us next month to find out more‌

ROOF & FIREWALL Specialists Have you got damp in the corner of a bedroom or along the ceiling of an upstairs wall? Nine times out of ten it’s faulty lead flashings and firewalls causing these problems. The majority of Brighton homes are at least 100 years old and so are their firewalls. Many firewalls are coming to the end of their natural lives. If you want them to last another 100 years we are the FIREWALL experts. If it’s not the lead or the firewall we can help with most other roofing problems from complete reroofing to minor repairs.

HEALTH ADVICE

35

Some advice on getting fit in the new year from local resident Marianne Clark…

Ten compelling reasons to take up Running! Have you noticed how many runners there are around Brighton at the moment? They’re everywhere! In case you didn’t know, it’s marathon season, and all those who aspire to take on the challenge of 26.2 miles are busy clocking up the miles ready for the big day. But you needn’t be the next Mo Farah or Paula Radcliffe to run. The truth is, running can benefit anyone. Here are some convincing reasons to give it a go. 1.

2.

3. 4. 5. 6.

It’s fantastic for your health. As well as making your heart and lungs stronger, it can improve muscle tone, increase bone density, help weight loss and improve balance and co-ordination. It’s very time-efficient and even short runs (15 - 20 mins) at a gentle pace can be beneficial. You can run pretty much anywhere (and in any weather) straight from home or the office, around town, in the park, on holiday... Just be sure to build up slowly. You can do it for free! Running burns big calories, whatever your speed (up to 850 calories / hour) and you keep burning more calories even afterwards. No special equipment is required, just some comfortable clothing, a decent pair of running shoes, and, ladies, a good sports bra! You can do it solo and in company. Running alone

can provide “me-time” away from the demands of work and family, whilst running with others can be sociable and motivating. 7. Heard about the “runner’s high”? It’s not a myth. Running triggers the release of endorphins in the brain which can improve general wellbeing for hours afterwards. 8. Regular running is a proven energiser. So, if you’re feeling fatigued, a run can help boost your energy levels, and you can top up your vitamin D levels and boost your immune system at the same time. Physical activity can help improve the quality of your sleep too. 9. There are hundreds of organised events you can join in - fun runs, your local ParkRun and major road races. Go and watch the Brighton Half Marathon (22 Feb) or Marathon (12 April) for a bit of inspiration. If they can do it, so can you! 10. It’s fun. Really! And it can give you a huge sense of achievement when you hit those goals, whether that’s a continuous lap of the park, a 5k or a marathon. Go on, give it a go! Concerned about your home being sold to fund your future care fees? The Issue

You probably own your home as joint tenants if you are a couple and solely if you are single. For couples this means you own it wholly, jointly and severally. Ultimately therefore you do not own it 50:50 as you might have assumed. You actually own all of it together and when one partner dies the surviving partner owns it solely and absolutely. It is sole and absolute ownership that enables a property to be taken into consideration as an asset by the local authority and puts the property in danger of needing to be sold to fund care.

The Reality

The Law (C.R.A.G - charging for residential accommodation guide) allows local authorities to assess your assets to determine if you need to pay for your own care. Currently if you have assets above £23,250, you are on your own and require care, you will probably have to pay for it all - currently averaging around £800 per week. Savings, cash and income would be used first and then your property would need to be taken into consideration. You would be expected to pay for all of your care until such time as your assets were depleted to below the £23,250 threshold. You would then pay for a proportion of your care until your assets were below £14,000 - at which point all your future care would be paid for.

The Solution

For couples, simply by changing the way you own your property well in advance of any care considerations i.e from joint tenants to tenants in common and by setting up two Trusts within a properly structured Will at the same time will in most cases, prevent your home from being taken into account by the local authority altogether should you ever require care in the future.

The children and/or whoever else is also nominated as Trust beneficiaries for that particular Trust will subsequently have access to that half of the property when the surviving partner dies. The first half of the property then is 100% securely in Trust for the beneficiaries and will not be at risk. As a result of this simple strategy the survivor is protected from having to sell the property to pay for their care should they need it because it is not possible to sell just their half of the property and the Crag guidelines clearly state that the market value of half a property is £0. The second half of the property will then ultimately go into Trust for access by the nominated beneficiaries when the surviving partner eventually dies. The beneficiaries will at that stage have both halves safe and secure in Trust and will be able to share and dispose of the property according to the wishes of the settlors (the original owners of both halves). By leaving 1/2 the property into Trust on first death, the surviving partner can still sell the property to downsize if they wish and are not restricted in any way with regards to what they wish to do to or with the property - it simply means that it is safeguarded and therefore will definitely be able to be appointed to the chosen beneficiaries when the time comes. For sole owners immediately conveying at least half of your property into Trust well in advance of any care consideration and becoming a Trustee and primary beneficiary of the Trust with others nominated to become beneficiaries after your death is usually enough to take away the risk of the property being considered as an asset to be sold if care is required as the property is not absolutely owned by yourself anymore and again it is not possible to sell half a house or force a Trustee to do something that is not in the ultimate best interest of the Trust beneficiaries. Call us now on 01273 911142 for a friendly chat about how this strategy could be of real benefit to you and your family.

For sole owners the process is simply to set up a Trust now and convey at least 1/2 of your property into it which will produce the same result.

The Reasoning

When you own your home as tenants in common you actually own half each. When the first partner dies, they leave their half into their trust. The surviving partner is the Trustee of that Trust and also the primary beneficiary which means that they have complete control over the property and what happens to it.
