HOVE PARK Another historical offering from local resident, Tony Pelling...
TALES OF GOLDSTONE BOTTOM... PACK UP YOUR TROUBLES Happily, the many “old kit bags” we now see in our park each weekend contain nothing more menacing than muddy football boots and sweat laden shirts, but there have been times when battles of a less wholesome kind than football have had consequences for our valley. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, barely a year went by without large military encampments and manoeuvres taking place in Goldstone Bottom against the threat posed by Napoleon when he was not otherwise engaged with Josephine. In the second decade of the 20th century, much activity of a different kind was prompted by The Great War “to end all wars” (Oh yeah, you must be kiddin’!) when the Army Transport Unit took over our fledgling park. Ernie Mason, in his comments on the war entitled “A Working Man”, reported seeing row upon row of mules tied to ropes strung right across the valley in readiness to be sent to the front line. Sadly, Ernie ends his report “none came back”. During this same conflict and for five years afterwards, much of the valley was taken up with allotments in an effort to alleviate the severe food shortage.

The map entitled “Where the bombs fell” in my faded and well thumbed copy of “Brighton & Hove in Battledress” by DL Murray, reveals that, whilst Goldstone Bottom was fairly liberally peppered with explosives in the Second World War, little damage befell the park itself. The same cannot be said of houses in the area as six bombs fell in Goldstone Crescent near the junction with Woodland Drive. (I’m told that my garden took a direct hit in this raid and I often wonder if my fishpond is where it is because someone just made use of the crater.) In April 1941 properties in Nevill Road received blast damage from a parachute land mine and the whole area was evacuated while an unexploded bomb was made safe. At the north end of our valley five high explosive bombs and around 100 smaller incendiary bombs fell in the area of King George VI Avenue, while to the south the football ground did not escape unscathed as three bombs fell nearby and one damaged houses in Orchard Road. Hove could not have been considered a high level military target yet, despite this, civilians were killed and 123 seriously injured with 80 houses totally destroyed and over 4,900 damaged. These difficult and often very sad times are all part of the story of our valley. But, whilst we reflect, let’s not dwell on them. I think I will take the advice of that First World War song-writer and “smile, smile, smile”. Tony Pelling Hove Park resident

HOVE PARK Welcome to the Bilingual Primary School in Hove Park...
BILINGUAL PRIMARY SCHOOL MOVES TO HOVE PARK The Bilingual Primary School is opening at our new school site in The Droveway on the fringes of Hove Park on February 25th. The local Hove Park community and neighbouring businesses have shown tremendous support for our school, for which we are immensely grateful and we are excited at becoming part of the community. The Bilingual Primary School is a mixed mainstream primary school for 4-11 year olds serving 620 pupils when full. The school follows the National Curriculum which is taught in English apart from Physical Education which is taught entirely in Spanish. The school was opened in 2012 by a local community group, so community focus plays a strong role in our school’s identity. The children will be imbued with civic pride for their local environment and community neighbours, treating both with respect and consideration. The school will be embedded in the Hove cluster of schools creating working relationships and sharing knowledge on modern foreign languages and bilingualism. The school has begun to build positive relationships with City Park (eg Legal & General, Lloyds) through organising visits to the school, alongside links with Corals and Waitrose. The school’s Travel Plan has been The ribbon cutting ceremony on 22nd January
developed with care, to ensure school parents are respectful of parking arrangements. The school also has an open-door relationship to Hove councillors to discuss any local concerns. The ability for children to participate daily in another language and to have the linguistic and cultural tools to connect to the wider world is an opportunity we hope to share with the local community through open days and community events. For any queries you can contact the school office at info@bilingualprimaryschool.org.uk

HOVE PARK Introducing the next ‘healthy living’ article written by local personal trainer and nutrition adviser Mary Henderson...
HEALTHY LIVING... EATING FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS Most people have heard of probiotics but gut health goes far beyond yogurt. A healthy gut relies on a healthy balanced diet. Even Hippocrates in around 400BC proposed “bad digestion is the root of all evil”. Only recently, with a rise in autoimmune diseases such as diabetes type 1 and food allergies, is the gut microbiome (bacteria in your belly) being properly investigated. There are good and bad bacteria and some that are neither good nor bad exactly but in equilibrium promote good health and stave off illness. Just as ecosystems around us rely on a balance of species for all to coexist, the same is true for (inside) us. Our bodies have evolved with these organisms and have developed to function with their help. Microbes help us break down and extract nutrients from food and educate our immune systems to fight disease. Take fibre for instance, it helps keep us regular and process dietary fats but it also helps support a diverse gut bacteria. The 5-a-day message is more than simply about getting adequate vitamins and minerals. Interestingly recent studies show that we pass on gut diversity to our children, so if you are more motivated to do things for others, perhaps consider this an act to support the health of future generations. My granddad always said, “You need to eat your weight in dirt, lassie, before getting

Petrol rationing was then still in force and accounted for this. The corner of Hove Park Road can just be seen. Today the large trees are far fewer, many having been uprooted and destroyed in the violent hurricane of October 16 1987. Thanks to the Regency Society for this image from their photographic archives, The James Gray Collection. HOVE PARK Update from the Friends of Hove Park...
HOVE PARK - A NEW YEAR As spring approaches the daffodils, crocus, and snowdrops are colouring the park and the Friends are beginning to plan this year’s activities. We are hoping to hold a clean up event during Friday/Saturday, 4/5 March. This will be linked with the national tidy up campaign ‘Clean for the Queen’ inspired by the Queen’s 90th birthday. It is expected to include litter picking and other sprucing up around the park. If you are interested in taking part please look at the park noticeboards or the Friends website (www.friendsofhovepark.org) for details nearer the time. As well as the immediate benefit, the aim of such events is to help change attitudes to leaving litter and reduce the environmental and financial toll caused by the current blight of litter. The Friends will again be running the popular Easter Egg Trail. It will start from the green in front of the cafe on Easter Monday, 28th March and will as usual feature a series of clues to discover all round the park. We are also hoping to include a face painter and possibly some other activities. In 2015 TCV (The Conservation Volunteers), funded by
OVO Energy, launched the ‘I Dig Trees’ programme with the aim of planting more than 150,000 free trees in over 2,000 green spaces across the UK. The Friends successfully applied for a ‘wildlife and shrubs’ pack consisting of 10 whips each of guelder rose, hawthorn, goat willow, dogwood, and wayfaring tree and these have now been planted near the finger maze by CityParks gardeners. The small whips will need the protection of their spiral plastic guards for quite a while yet but hopefully they will establish quickly and provide varied ornamental and wildlife interest throughout the seasons. The low fence around the wildflower mound has proved successful in providing protection from further damage by bikes. The mound has been cleared of much of the coarse grass which was threatening to overwhelm it and plenty of new growth is appearing. We look forward to seeing how it develops this year and will add more plants if necessary. And last but by no means least a defibrillator has been installed on the outside wall of the cafe. Although one hopes it will never need to be used, it is good to know that this lifesaving equipment is now available to park users.

HOVE PARK Velda Fairclough lives in Hove and runs the local franchise for Bright and Beautiful, a domestic housekeeping service based in the Old Shoreham Road.
LOCAL PERSON... VELDA FAIRCLOUGH OF ‘BRIGHT AND BEAUTIFUL’ How long have you lived in Hove? I’ve lived in Hove for 11 years now and can’t imagine living anywhere else! Myself and my now husband Jonathan decided to leave London because we wanted to get married and start a family and we now have a gorgeous little boy and girl who love it here as much as we do. What do you most like about the area? Living by the sea is fantastic, and also the fact Brighton and Hove is like London-on-sea so there is never a shortage of interesting things going on, whether it be the arts or sports. It also has a huge number of high quality restaurants, cafés and bars so you are never short of a good night out. One of the main reasons I started my own housekeeping business was so that I could play an even bigger role in and become much closer to the community that I love so much being a part of. What services do Bright & Beautiful provide? What Bright & Beautiful brings to Hove is a housekeeping service that offers something very different. We deliver professional domestic housekeeping services that include cleaning, tidying, laundry and ironing and we do so with the highest standards of security and service. We are also committed to using only eco-friendly and non-toxic cleaning products that are better for your home and your health and leave the rooms looking and smelling wonderful. Our housekeepers work in teams of three so they get the job done quickly and efficiently and I run regular training sessions with them so that
they will always leave a home looking sparkling, with all the finishing touches that we pride ourselves on - from hotel standard bed making and gleaming antiques to an immaculate laundry service. We even put your ironed clothes away in your wardrobe for you!
How can people find out more about your domestic housekeeping services? The best way for people to find out more about our services is to visit our website. My page is: http://www.brightandbeautifulhome.com/hove/ and there is lots of information on there about our services, client testimonials, security policies and our ethical approach. Or they can call me on 01273 934991 or email me on velda@brightandbeautifulhome.com for a free and no obligation quote to look after their home.

HOVE PARK Here is your regular update from the Friends of Three Cornered Copse...
FRIENDS OF THREE CORNERED COPSE LITTER PICKING, WOODPECKERS AND MORE... The effect of our mild winter has been discussed at length in newspapers and TV, and the appearance of snowdrops and daffodils much earlier each year gives witness to the changes that are occurring. The copse shows this in each of its three corners, where bulbs have emerged and buds appeared on the trees, and ground parsley starts to carpet the woodland floor. The birdlife is thoroughly busy too, food is abundant and the kinder temperature allows less migrations and an earlier courtship among all species. Just wander through the copse at daybreak or dusk and hear a cacophony of birdsong. That is, if the traffic noise from the by-pass is blown to a different direction. Earlier this month I spotted a green woodpecker drilling into one of the older trees in the very centre of the wooded area. At first I thought I’d heard an echo, as a more distant drilling noise answered the first. This repeated for several minutes, the question and answer of these two woodpeckers. The staccato rattling noise on the hollow wood bounced around the leafless copse, providing an unusual soundtrack to the walk that day.

Having missed a work day for the Friends of Three Cornered Copse, due to our ranger being ill, the build-up of litter is beginning to be noticed. Bill Bryson, the author, and president of the Campaign for Rural England, stated that only one in a hundred of us drop litter, and that if one in a hundred pick up litter, we would have none. Unfortunately, in the copse, the pickers-up are outnumbered quite regularly, but frequent clear-ups from our group keep the problem under control. The Big Tidy-Up (#CleanForTheQueen) on March 4th-5th saw a special clean-up weekend for the Queen’s 90th birthday. (Litter fact: a banana skin takes two years to degrade, and a plastic bottle takes 450 years.) Some confusion still remains about the future of our ranger service provided by the council’s parks department. Recent meetings of the council seem to have found surplus budget from some overpayments, which were proposed to be used to reprieve the rangers, at least for another year. But until the final budget meeting of the council takes place it remains to be seen if the council can support our Friends group activities. Without the rangers our activities will be less ambitious than ever before. Perhaps reduced to just picking up litter. Simon Baxendale Friends of Three Cornered Copse

HOVE PARK Featuring local business Dream Doors...
A NEW KITCHEN FOR THE SPRING... What could be nicer than a new kitchen for the spring!Improving the home is a priority for many of us at this time of year, but installing a kitchen from scratch is not for the faint-hearted! The work can be disruptive, messy and inconvenient, involving a range of workmen including carpenters, tilers, plumbers, plasterers and electricians. Because of the number of people involved in a full kitchen renovation, budgets can easily go awry and if the estimates are to be believed almost one quarter of kitchen installations go over budget. One way to minimise costs is to opt for a kitchen refresh as opposed to a full refurbishment. Updating cupboard doors, worktops and fixtures and fittings minimises the work required, and a company like Dream Doors will cost out and arrange all the elements of the job including the workmen, in advance, so budgets are all agreed up front. Dream Doors offer a huge range of door styles and colours, made from the best available materials and fully guaranteed. Worktops can be replaced or overlaid onto existing tops, again reducing mess and disruption. To help you get exactly what you need, Dream Doors designers ask our clients to consider fundamental questions including:
• • • •
Why do you need a new kitchen? What do you like about your current kitchen? What do you dislike about your current kitchen? What preference do you have for the look and feel of your new kitchen? • What are your storage needs? • Apart from cooking, will you use your kitchen for anything else? With this information Dream Doors can provide a quotation perfect for your needs. A brochure is available on our website or you can call or visit our showroom in Boundary Road, Hove.

CAMEO (Come And Meet Each Other) is an over-50s group which meets at Bishop Hannington Church Hall, Nevill Avenue, every Thursday from 10am-12 noon. We have tea/coffee and chat for an hour, followed by entertainment. Entrance costs £1.50.
There will be 5km and 1 mile Chicken Runs for adults and a 500m Chicks Dash for children. This will be a very friendly, non-competitive, totally inclusive, FUN run. It might also be your launch pad onto much bigger running challenges in the future. The race entry price includes your chicken costume and a chocolate egg. children and young people who want to design a festival poster.
Poster Design Competition Starboard Festival has just launched a poster design competition to ask children and young people to design two stunning posters to be used to promote the event. We are looking for two different designs - one produced by someone aged 0-12 and another by someone aged 12-21. Both posters will be produced and will be displayed around the city targeting different aged audiences. Winners of the competition will be presented with four tickets to any show of their choice at the launch of Starboard Festival in April. To enter: please submit your A4 poster design via email to info@ starboardfestival.com or send by post to C/O Creative Learning Team, Starboard Festival, 12a Pavilion Buildings, Castle Square, Brighton BN1 1EE. Entries must be received by March 31st. Please mark clearly your name, age, email address/phone number (of parent/guardian if under 16). The festival will superimpose its logo and the festival dates and website address over the winning designs so please take this into consideration when designing your poster. We regret that we are unable to return entries to the competition. For further information about Starboard Festival please contact Donna Hay at donna@starboardfestival. com or visit: www.starboardfestival.com.
