HOVE PARK

WELCOME TO HOVE PARK LIVING! February hasn’t been a great month weatherwise, but it’s always lovely in March to see the signs of spring like daffodils and buds on the trees. Venturing outside now seems a much more welcome prospect, and we have news from the operators of the miniature railway in Hove Park, who are starting their new season on March 21st, as well as suggestions from the Friends of Hove Park for a variety of local walks. Local resident Gaynor Wingham tells us about writer Edith Nesbit’s time in Hove and we have all our regular articles. Have a good month! HOVE PARK Local resident Gaynor Wingham looks at the time spent in Hove by children’s author E Nesbit…

EDITH NESBIT IN HOVE... Many areas in South East London and Kent make claim to the celebrated author Edith Nesbit, but did you know she spent time here in Brighton as a young child and lived in Hove? Edith Nesbit c1890

Edith was born in 1858, the youngest of five children. Her father John Collis Nesbit, an agricultural chemist, died in 1862. Her mother moved her young family around Britain and mainland Europe. The ill health of one of Edith’s sisters led the family to Brighton in 1866 for the sea air. An excellent book ‘The Life & Loves of E. Nesbit’ by Eleanor Fitzsimmons (pub Duckworth 2019) gives an account of Edith’s move from London to Brighton and the challenges she faced as a seven-year-old child. The family were in lodgings in Western Road, Hove, and Edith was sent to Mrs Arthur’s school as a weekday boarder which local records show was at 117 Lansdowne Place, Hove. As an adult Edith Nesbit wrote an account of her childhood where she describes this as a difficult time. ‘I remember the hot, white streets and the flies and Brill’s Baths and the Western Road and the bitter pang of passing, at the end of a long procession,

our own house, where someone might be at the window, and never anyone was.’ Edith recalled the beach with some disappointment as ‘there is no sand on the beach at Brighton only sandiness’ but enjoyed using stones and shells for dolls’ dinner parties. Eleanor Fitzsimmons remarks that her time on the beach could be the inspiration for the Psammead in one of her most popular books ‘Five Children and It’. The Psammead was ‘brown and furry and fat’ and crawled out of the sand. The Nesbit family moved to Buckinghamshire and she was sent to a boarding school in Lincolnshire. Her schooldays were overall not happy, and this is reflected in her writing where many of her fictional children do not attend school. Hove in 1866 may have been a very different place, but 117 Lansdowne Place is still there, and we can appreciate her walk along Western Road and her time playing on the beach. She wrote that her fictitious children are like ‘real children’ as she remembered ‘exactly how I used to feel and think about things’. It is thrilling to imagine a bit of Brighton and Hove influencing her writing. Gaynor Wingham

News from the council…

NEW LAW TO PROTECT ANIMALS A new law covering the sale of puppies and kittens is due to come into effect from April. ‘Lucy’s Law’ will mean that puppies and kittens can no longer be sold by a pet shop or commercial dealer unless they have bred the animal themselves. Instead, anyone looking to buy or adopt a puppy or kitten under six months must either deal directly with the breeder or an animal rehoming centre. The law is named after Lucy, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, who died after being subjected to terrible conditions on a puppy farm. Dogs like Lucy are often kept by breeders to produce multiple litters of puppies, which are taken from their mothers at just a few weeks old and advertised online or sold in pet shops. Brighton & Hove City Council plays a key part in the fight to protect animal welfare. Many activities involving animals such as selling pets, breeding dogs for sale, boarding cats or dogs or day care for dogs require a licence from the council. Each licence holder is inspected. The council’s chair of licensing, Councillor Jackie O’Quinn, said: “We do a lot of work to make sure businesses working with animals in the city treat them correctly, so please do always follow the guidance if you’re thinking of getting a pet. We come across awful stories of animals kept in horrendous conditions from unscrupulous people dealing illegally in dogs and cats. Sometimes the puppies and • kittens never recover. So please never buy a pet without checking the trader’s licence and the conditions they’ve been kept in.”

If you’re thinking of buying a puppy, always ask to see a copy of the trader’s licence or ask for the licence number so you can check with the local council

If you’re thinking of buying a cat or dog, follow these guidelines to help combat the illegal trade in pet animals:

Never buy a puppy or kitten without asking to see them with their mum and the conditions they live in

Never buy a puppy or kitten younger than eight weeks old.

Consider getting a rescue animal from a reputable UK rehoming organisation – you can check if the organisation is a member of the Association of Dogs and Cats Homes

If you have any concerns, contact the council’s Animal Warden team by emailing animalwardens@brightonhove.gov.uk or calling 01273 294266.

HOVE PARK Our regular healthy living article from Mary Henderson, a doctoral researcher in gut health…

‘FREE FROM’ BUT FULL OF? The choice is yours. Make sure it’s informed. I want to make clear that some people legitimately need “Free-From” products, say, if they are coeliac. However, please don’t think that Free-From equals healthier. The sale of gluten-free products has risen by around 15% in recent years yet the number of people with coeliac disease or gluten intolerance is estimated at only around 1-2%, indicating that many think Free-From is healthier and this is simply not the case. Of course, for those with a genuine condition, avoiding these allergens definitely outweighs the pros of what is taken out and the cons of what is put in. Intolerances are a bit more complicated when irritable bowel syndrome is involved and long-term avoidance can exacerbate the problem. Glutens, like sugar, like milk, like salt, have functional as well as flavour properties. They form the structures and consistencies of breads, cakes, spreads and liquids as well as some having a preservative function. Not all preservatives are bad and in fact curb food waste. Food health and safety is a top priority. These so-called ‘baddies’ are replaced by stabilisers such as fats, other unfamiliar preservatives and thus not demonised. Free-From products, like sugar-free drinks, contain many other substitutes to create a tasty product that consumers will buy. Sorry to complicate things. But the message is, if you enjoy eating these Free-From products, all good and well, but please don’t be conned out of money for something that is no healthier and, in some cases, less healthy than what you really fancy. Be critical. Read labels. Question trends. Mary Henderson

HOVE PARK Advice on local walking from the Friends of Hove Park…

A WALK IN THE PARK... Walking is one of the most effective forms of physical activity with a wide range of beneficial effects. As well as maintaining and improving overall fitness and health, walking can improve our mood, reduce stress, and improve learning and memory. Hove Park provides a pleasant environment for a walk in all seasons (see winter snowdrops) and is also ideally situated as the starting point for a variety of urban, parkland and woodland walks. For gentle group exercise there is the Hove Park Healthwalk every Thursday, meeting 10.15am at the café for a 1.5 mile easy walk around the park. (Further information on local healthwalks at www.brighton-hove. gov.uk/healthwalks.) For something a little longer and more energetic try walking from the top of Hove Park up woodland pathways to the top of Three Cornered Copse (see new information board at the Goldstone Crescent entrance to the Copse) before returning or perhaps continuing on into the South Downs National Park. You can even enter the longest inland trail within

England from Hove Park. The Monarch’s Way (over 600 miles long) roughly follows the tortuous escape route taken by Charles II after his defeat at the Battle of Worcester. It snakes from Worcester through eleven English counties to Brighton, then heads along the seafront to Shoreham Harbour where the ship ‘The Surprise’ took him to exile. Locally it enters Hove Park from the west via the Droveway (where there is now a yellow waymark depicting The Surprise, the Prince of Wales crown, and the Royal Oak Tree), travels southwards and then traverses the park diagonally before exiting to continue along the footpath between the houses opposite towards Hove Recreation Ground. From Hove Park westwards the zigzagging route travels through the South Downs to Bramber, then heads for Arundel and beyond and offers ample scope for a variety of walks as it intersects with other trails. News from the council…

HMO RESTRICTIONS EXTENDED Property owners in the city wishing to convert a family house into a shared house or HMO for up to six people will need planning permission from this summer. An HMO (House in Multiple Occupation) is a property occupied by at least three people who are not from one ‘household’ (eg a family) but share facilities such as a bathroom and kitchen. Currently such conversions only need planning permission in the following five wards: Hanover & Elm Grove, Hollingdean & Stanmer, Moulsecoomb & Bevendean, Queen’s Park, St Peter’s & North Laine. In January 2020 the Tourism, Equalities, Communities and Culture Committee agreed to extend the planning controls to the rest of the city. This extension will come into force on 3 June 2020. Larger HMOs of seven or more occupants already need planning permission across the city. In a public consultation last summer 92% of responses were in favour of the extension. The new rules are designed to give the council an opportunity to ensure HMOs are of a decent standard and create a more even spread to achieve a greater balance of housing within communities.

News from the council…

‘CAR-FREE’ CITY CENTRE ? Brighton & Hove city councillors have agreed to explore the possibility of the city becoming ‘car-free’ by 2023. Members of the Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee, meeting at the end of January, requested a report that explores the feasibility of developing a car-free city. The report will be presented to them in October 2020. It will also look at costs, practicalities and any possible exemptions. The committee’s chair Anne Pissaridou said: “We were elected on a manifesto pledge to make our city carbon neutral by 2030. We have declared a climate emergency and are making progress on decarbonisation. But we must take major steps to reach our ambitious target, so we are proud to work cross-party and champion a car-free city centre. Crucially though, this will be for the climate assembly to decide, as our residents must lead on how we combat the climate crisis.” Councillors also noted that the joint notice of motion should be considered by the city’s Climate Assembly, which is due to meet this spring.

BRIGHTON FESTIVAL CHORUS SPRING CONCERT Saturday 21 March, 7.30pm, All Saints Church

The Sussex Peasant is a mobile farm shop which visits villages and towns across Sussex for a few hours each week. The shop offers 100% Sussex produce, harvested the day before: seasonal fruit and vegetables; pasture-fed native and traditional breeds of beef, lamb, pork and chicken; locally caught fish; locally produced dairy products; home baked bread, cakes and pastries; jams, chutneys and drinks. The business launched in 2017 and is now at Hove Park (at the bottom of The Droveway) on Saturdays from 9am to 4pm, with a very positive reaction from customers. Ed Johnstone started the business by restoring an old horse truck and converting it into a shop. He told us: “I was disheartened to read that just 1% of food farmed in the home counties remains in the counties to be eaten. I have built a co-operative of sustainable Sussex farmers to supply our customer base with the finest local and seasonal produce. The produce’s provenance is behind everything I do. Our farming is sustainable, our food is traceable, our approach is socially and environmentally minded.” Seasonal produce in March includes purple sprouting broccoli, cauliflower and kale. They do a seasonal Sussex vegetable box, a weekend breakfast box, or a Sunday roast box. Boxes are either delivered or customers can pick them up from the shop on Saturdays. For more information, visit www.thesussexpeasant.co.uk.

Brighton Festival Chorus will be performing their 2020 spring concert on Saturday 21st March, 7.30pm, at All Saints Church in The Drive. The concert will feature Carmina Burana by Carl Orff, which remains one of the most popular and exciting pieces in the world’s choral repertoire. The programme also includes Pange Lingua by Zoltán Kodály, based on a medieval hymn written by Thomas Aquinas. This performance is dedicated to the memory of László Heltay, the founding Music Director of BFC and pupil of Kodály, who died in December 2019. For more information and tickets, visit bfc.org.uk.

HOVE PARK The miniature railway’s new season starts on 21st March…

HOVE PARK MINIATURE RAILWAY During the winter months, club members of the miniature railway in Hove Park have been very busy carrying out a range of maintenance tasks to improve the site and rolling stock in preparation for the forthcoming running season. In January, work was carried out to enhance the appearance of our new tunnel. This was a much needed replacement for its predecessor but, until recently, just looked and felt like riding through a giant shed. Hopefully, visitors to the railway this year will notice and appreciate the improvement. Another major task that has been completed, but one that we hope will go completely unnoticed by passengers, is the replacement of a large section of the track. The circuit is regularly inspected throughout the year for signs of impending wear and tear and any areas that are identified as requiring improvement are worked on during the winter. This is a time-consuming task that requires precision welding and engineering skills to create a seamless join with the existing sections to ensure a smooth ride for everyone. The club is very lucky to have members with these skills who give up their spare time free of charge, which in turn helps us to keep fare prices low for passengers.

But it isn’t all work and no play in the winter. On January 1st, the club gathered for its annual New Year fun run to blow the cobwebs away. The dry but cloudy day provided an opportunity for a fun get-together over soup and sausage rolls as well as giving members a chance to try out the new electric engine that the club has purchased for the new season. With a maximum capacity of 12 adult passengers plus a driver and a guard, we hope that it will be a terrific queue-buster on busy track days by reducing waiting times for everyone. At the time of writing, preparations for the new season, which starts on Saturday 21st March, are almost complete. Good news for 2020 is that there will be 17 days when the railway will be open to the public instead of the usual 15. For more information including all our 2020 running dates and details on how to join, go to our new website www.hoveparkrailway.com. New members are always welcome and annual membership costs from as little as £20 for students, £25 for adults. Lisa Dowsett

News from the Friends of Three Cornered Copse...

THE CHANGING WOODLAND The interesting, and rather obvious, thing about a woodland, such as Three Cornered Copse, is that it is constantly changing. A walk each week along the same path will provide a different experience each time. There are agents of change at work. The weather has been a powerful agent of change in recent weeks. The February winds took down several branches from the less healthy trees, and half the height of one tall beech, which currently blocks the main path. With a diameter of over 12 inches, there was probably 2 tons of hardwood falling to the path on that day. Woodlands are not always a good place to be in a violent storm. The council’s contractors were in the copse in February, and removed a few vulnerable trees and branches that were threatening to fall. Fortunately this was shortly before the storms Ciara and Dennis breezed through. The huge tree carcasses that lay on the floor will remain

HOVE PARK to host caterpillars, and provide shelter and food for distinct species of our threatened insects. (For more details of our native species planting, please see our Facebook page). We await the budding and blossoming of these young saplings as the Spring develops. Several years ago we also planted a large number of snowdrop bulbs among the trees at the north of the woodland, kindly donated by one of our members. They have established over the years, and multiplied, and now provide a wonderful spectacle in the early months of the year. Our most recent workday re-claimed some of the green space at the south Snowdrops on the floor of Three Cornered Copse end of the grassy area. Over the years the trees cast shade on the area and the nettles and brambles for many years now, providing habitat for the fungus and move in to cover the space. It’s the ideal time to clear, insects at the start of the food chain. These days one can before the birds start nesting and the weeds begin to hear the woodpeckers at work, drilling to feed on the sprout. The area is now free for the mower to operate grubs in the decaying wood. and keep the weeds at bay. A recent audit of our planting projects shows that in this winter the Friends group has planted, across several of our workdays, no less than 14 different species of native trees and shrubs, ranging from Crab Apple (Malus sylvestris) to Wayfaring (Viburnum lantana). REWILDING AT WATERHALL GOLF COURSE

NEW KIDZ KLUB

Brighton & Hove city councillors on the Policy & Resources Committee decided on 23rd January to retain an 18-hole golf course at Hollingbury Park Golf Course and that Waterhall Golf Course will be restored to chalk grasslands through a rewilding plan.

Kidz Klub runs dynamic weekly KIDZ KLUBS in communities across Brighton & Hove in partnership with local churches.

Martlets is calling for people in Brighton and Hove to open up their outside spaces for their Open Gardens weekend on Saturday 13 or Sunday 14 June 2020.

The garden at Martlets hospice

The charity is asking everyone to consider opening their garden – large or small - for others to enjoy. Visitors to the gardens will be encouraged to make a donation to help raise funds for life-changing hospice care for local people and their families. Please register interest by 5 April. To find out more visit www.martlets.org.uk/open-gardens/ or call 01273 747 455 or email fundraising@martlets.org.uk .

A Community Interest Company will rewild Waterhall Golf Course during a 25-year lease agreement. Councillor Alan Robins, chair of the city’s Tourism, Equalities, Communities and Culture committee and a member of the Policy & Resources Committee said: “The leasing of Waterhall and Hollingbury Park Golf Courses offers opportunities for local people to invest in our city, it continues golf in the city as well as re-wilding public land, and this is good news for continuing access for everyone - at both locations.”

They are a mix of faith and fun, with games, competitions, drama, music, sports, quizzes and a wide choice of workshops. From Sunday 1st March they will be launching a brand new club aimed at kids from 7-11 in the church hall at the Church of The Good Shepherd on Dyke Road, BN2 5EA. It will run every Sunday in school term-time from 5pm-6.30pm. Entry costs £1 and includes refreshments. If you are interested in helping or would like more information, contact Paul on 07540 270994.

A charity event taking place at BHASVIC in Dyke Road...

News from Martlets hospice…

SLEEP EASY FOR THE YMCA

COULD YOU BE A COMPASSIONATE NEIGHBOUR?

Sleep Easy is YMCA Brighton & Hove’s biggest fundraising event of the year.

Martlets is launching a new community-led project, Compassionate Neighbours, aimed at tackling loneliness and isolation for people living with terminal illness. Compassionate Neighbours is a national social movement that has been successful in other parts of the UK. Martlets is now introducing this programme locally. People challenge themselves to spend a night outside to raise money for this local youth charity which tackles the root causes of youth homelessness. This year the charity is encouraging people of all ages to sign up to their event in Brighton on Friday 20 March 2020. Effective, early intervention for young people at risk of homelessness is essential. YMCA Brighton & Hove run a range of integrated services to help prevent young people becoming homeless in the first place. Although it is a tough challenge, Sleep Easy is a great community event to be part of. It doesn’t seek to replicate the experience of homelessness but gives an insight into the challenges young people face. Those looking to host their own event on a date of their choice are also welcome. YMCA Brighton & Hove is encouraging everyone taking part to secure sponsorship. To find out more or sign up, visit Sleep Easy: www.ymcadlg.org/get-involved/fundraise/sleep-easy/ To donate, visit www.justgiving.com/campaign/ YMCADLGSleepEasy

The programme aims to provide a group of trained neighbours who offer their time and companionship to local people struggling with loneliness and in need of support. A Compassionate Neighbour can help by arranging regular visits, offering a listening ear and emotional support or helping people to do activities they enjoy and stay connected to their local community and family and friends. Anyone interested in becoming a Compassionate Neighbour should contact Elmien Brink, project lead, by emailing cn@ martlets.org.uk, visiting www.martlets.org.uk/ cn or telephone 01273 273400. Please note that Compassionate Neighbours is a voluntary programme. Volunteers must be aged over 18. The training days for Compassionate Neighbours in Hove will be on 18 and 25 April.

Offering a range of fresh fish, shellfish and seafood products. Committed to being plastic free so only use 100% compostable pots made of veg/plant based matter, waxed paper and paper bags. Open Thurs through to Sun 10am - 4.30pm.
