HOVE PARK High quality music and entertainment for the whole family - right here in Hove Park...

FUNK THE FAMILY FESTIVAL SATURDAY 30TH MAY, HOVE PARK Following 2014’s debut, sell-out festival Funk The Family are back with a bigger, better location and fatter line-up. “Testing the waters” by launching at Hove Lagoon in 2014, Funk The Family’s organisers were “utterly chuffed” by the runaway success of their inaugural event. With tickets selling out months in advance, Funk The Family entertained 1,000 people for eight hours. 2015 sees the organisers relocate to the beautiful, centrallylocated Hove Park, allowing thousands more families much more space. Taking place during England’s largest arts festival, Brighton Fringe, Funk The Family’s ethos is simple: high quality music and entertainment for all the family. “Funk The Family Festival has succeeded in filling a huge gap within an abundant, untapped market,” Funk The Family’s founder and director, Lucy ‘Elle J’ Small, enthuses. “There are thousands of adults, like me, that love music, have done the festival circuit, and now have kids. We want to enjoy that festival vibe with our families, but

not necessarily go camping with them!” Keeping things funky, the main stage’s line-up this year includes Britain’s Godfather of soul, Omar Lye-Fook (with full band), rising dub/hip hop 12-piece, Nubiyan Twist, high-energy Brighton afrobeat band, Kalakuta Millionaires and Mr B The Gentleman Rhymer (clue’s in the name!). Other music includes Normanton Street, Bloco Branco, Euphony and Gyratory Allstars. The brilliant Circus Project are back, offering trapeze workshops for the whole family. Inside the Kids’ Big Top you can watch shows from Circus Pzaz, plus acrobalance, tumbling, unicycling and lots more. Meanwhile Funk The Family’s Elle J Small takes to the wheels of steel in the Club Tropicana DJ Bar alongside Jazz Room’s Russ Dewbury, King Tafari Love Soundsystem, Lynda Phoenix, Donna Dee and many more. Other family entertainment includes The Tree of Life (kids’ yoga, wellbeing area), The Outdoors Project (nerf wars and bushcraft), Miss Sparkle (festival fairy) and Fashion Academy (interactive kids’ workshops). There will also be delicious local food and drink stalls, craft stalls, proper coffee, art and drama workshops, storytelling... and much more... Funk The Family is an all-day festival on: Saturday 30th May, 11am-8pm, Hove Park.

HOVE PARK The monthly update from The Friends of Hove Park...

FRIENDS OF HOVE PARK SPRING EVENTS Hove Park is looking lovely at present with a spectacular show of blossom (see photo). Our Easter Egg Trail on Easter Monday enjoyed excellent weather and was even more popular than last year. In all we had 228 children take part, with a queue forming before the official start and it remaining busy until the very end. See photograph showing people clustered around clue board 6 by the fingerprint maze. We may expand the event with additional activities next year. Black sunflower seeds are richer in oil and preferred by birds, whereas grey/white striped ones can be used for snacks, baking and other culinary purposes. Petals of the ‘pompom’ Teddy Bear variety can be used in salads. Sunflower varieties range from low growing, multiheaded ones to towering giants and boast an assortment of colours besides the traditional yellow ones. We will have a small selection of varieties on the stand from which children can choose their seed. For further details of the Friends see our website: www.friendsofhovepark.org.

The deadline for articles and adverts for the June issue is 15th May 2015 info@hoveparkliving.co.uk

We are now looking forward to our next event. At the Martlets Carnival, on Bank Holiday Monday 25th May, we will be sharing a stand with the Rangers and the Friends of the Three Cornered Copse. There will be a photo display, and some free activity sheets for children with the theme of birds, echoing one of the Brighton Festival themes. Our main activity will be selling a kit with a sunflower seed which children can sow at the stand and then grow on at home. 2015 has been designated the Year of the Sunflower by the horticultural trade. As well as having flamboyant ornamental flowers, sunflowers are good for wildlife, attracting bees and butterflies to a rich banquet of nectar and pollen and providing winter food for birds.

HOVE PARK Introducing the next ‘healthy living’ article written by local personal trainer and nutrition adviser Mary Henderson...

WHAT’S ON THE TIN? So many of us are run off our feet and want to trust healthy brands to feed ourselves and our families

Have you visited the Pavilion Restaurant at Singing Hills?

Special Spring Lunch Menu Available Monday-Saturday Two Courses £10.95 / Three Courses £13.95 Starters: Thai Salmon Fishcakes Soup of the Day Mushroom Vol au Vents Main Courses: Curry of the Day Beer Battered Cod & Chips Penne Carbonara Chicken New Yorker, Salad & Chips Desserts: Fruit Crumble & Custard Banana Split Assorted Gâteaux Also available: Daily Specials Board, All Day Breakfasts, Bar Snacks, Sandwiches & Baguettes Singing Hills Golf Course Limited, Muddleswood Road, Albourne, West Sussex, BN6 9EB

New healthy and diet ranges are launched all the time. “Hooray!” we might say. Sorry to burst the bubble but these ranges often turn out to be the worse option. On a recent weight-loss programme I helped on, parents and their kids were asked to pick food items they believed would be healthier. Most chose items that were in fact higher in fat, sugar and/or salt than the “normal” brands. How crazy is that? Typical ploys are “70% less fat”… so 30% of this IS fat (over 17.5% is high). Low-fat (3g or less per 100g) are often jam-packed with sugar to compensate. Another popular trick is to set the recommended portion size abnormally low (“a slither of cake contains…”), and “100% pure beef”…yes, of the beef in there. We all need to equip ourselves with the knowledge and skills to eat well. We ARE what we eat. Some quick tips: • The more processed the food you buy, the more scrutiny need apply! • Not sure how processed something is, if it’s a strawberry yogurt, got an ingredients’ list as long as your shopping trolley and strawberries are not in the first 4 or 5 ingredients, it’s probably not got a lot of “strawberry” in it. • Ignore claims made on the packaging – go straight to the per 100g table. The British Heart Foundation offers free wallet-sized food labelling guides.

We have received this letter from a resident of Woodland Avenue: “We have recently had a spate of car scratching in the area (in particular the roads around Woodland Avenue), targeting cars parked up on pavements. If you have any new scratches on your car, please call it in to the police. It’s really important that the police know the extent of the cost of damage being caused and it also helps build up a clear picture of the route it’s happening on. The more information the police have, the sooner they can catch who is doing it. If this continues, everyone’s car insurance will escalate as our neighbourhood will be flagged up as an area of high car crime, so it’s in all our interests to help the police to catch the vandal. We recently invested in a CCTV camera which has been really useful in keeping track of who is going past our house. If you would like to do this yourself and need help setting this up, ask around and I’m sure as neighbours we will step up to help. Let’s get our neighbourhood back to being safe and secure again”. HOVE PARK Update from the Friends of The Three Cornered Copse...

MONTHLY UPDATE FROM THE FRIENDS OF THE THREE CORNERED COPSE Recently our Council Ranger, Garry Meyer, led an “Introduction to Geocaching” with a Health Walk from Patcham up through Coney Wood, along Green Ridge, down through the Three Cornered Copse and finally through Hove Park. During the walk of about two miles, they used smart phones and GPS devices to find the Geocaches. They used some small, inexpensive items to swap with items found in the Geocaches. This was a great fun introduction to Geocaching in a familiar environment. (www.geocaching.com). There are three hidden in the copse, see if you can find them.

In the Copse – Spring Snowdrops

At the last committee meeting it was felt that leaving some stretches of the grass uncut to create more of a meadow effect would be good, possibly the section between the two groves of trees in the area between the top of Dyke Road Avenue and the King George VI Avenue entrance. It was also suggested that planting some hedgerow trees and shrubs along the base of the bank that borders the top of Dyke Road Avenue would create

We will be talking to those wishing to know more about the copse and will be selling planted sunflower seeds to the children for 50p. The Friends Group will meet up again for our Late Spring Work Session on Saturday 25 April 2015. The work day starts at 10.00am until 1.00pm, always gathering at the bench at the bottom of the green slope, just in front of the grove of silver birches. BRIGHTON OPEN AIR THEATRE LAUNCHES IN MAY The new Brighton Open Air Theatre (BOAT) is to open in the old bowling green at Dyke Road Park on Saturday 9th May with a special gala featuring comedy from Simon Evans, Dan Atkinson and Jo Neary, as well as music from Nick Pynn and Brighton Early Music Choir. BOAT was the vision of Adrian Bunting, a playwright, compere and construction manager who died from pancreatic cancer in 2013. His friends have carried on with the project as a legacy to the community, and have held many events to raise funds. The design of the theatre includes raked terracing, a bespoke acoustic wall and a turfed ‘thrust’ stage, bringing artist and audience closer together. BOAT will operate from the beginning of May to the end of September each year and will provide a space for local companies and schools alongside national touring productions. The events will be a mixture of free and ticketed events for theatre, spoken word, (non-amplified) music and screenings. Following the gala opening, BOAT plays host to Shakespeare’s immortal tale of star-crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet, performed by the Globe Theatre on Tour, one of the world’s most acclaimed Shakespearean companies. Performed in the Elizabethan tradition, this staging dis-

tils the story of love between two feuding families to its very essence: predestined passion, lurking violence and reconciliation in the face of tragedy. Dates: Opening gala, Sat 9th May, 6pm. Tickets: www.ticketsource.co.uk/brightonopenairtheatre The Globe on Tour’s Romeo and Juliet, Wed 13 May to Sat 16 May. You are invited to arrive from 45 minutes before the show starts to set up a picnic. HOVE PARK Local resident Tony Pelling with stories from Goldstone Bottom...

TALES OF GOLDSTONE BOTTOM GETTING AROUND THE PARK IN A TANK!! Whilst on a leisurely stroll round the park I was passed by a young lady riding a unicycle. Unusual, I thought, and started to wonder what other uncommon modes of transport have appeared in Goldstone Bottom. Common ones abound, of course, and are easily listed: bikes, skateboards, roller skates, roller blades, scooters, prams, pushchairs, wheelchairs and many others. Not every park has a railway so we mustn’t forget our childsized train set. During Hove Lions fair, motorcycles have appeared in the arena for a daredevil display. At the same fair an ambulance and a fire engine are always on hand. But surely the best way to travel is like those guys in red who arrive by parachute, landing with unbelievable precision in the centre of the display arena. We have to go back to the second decade of the twentieth century for the two most unexpected appearances of transport in our park. The First World War was partly financed by the sale of National War Bonds and Savings Certificates, and in recognition of the substantial amount of almost £290,000 raised by Hove in this way the town was given its own tank. It was named “Hova” and it had seen service in the famous action at Ypres. This proud warrior arrived at Hove Park in September 1919 (see photograph) and remained until 1937 when it was broken up for scrap metal, so, maybe in its subsequent life, it saw service in the next big conflict too. Finally, and most unexpectedly, the battleship “Dreadnought” was here. Well, it was rather big so we had to make do with a replica of just a bit of it. In fact when it was launched in February 1906 it was the largest and fastest such ship in the world and with a main battery complement of 10 twelve inch guns, also

the most powerful. Ever ready for a party, Hove decided to celebrate the coronation of George V in June 1911 with a procession from the Town Hall to Hove Park where the real party fun would begin. I am sure the tableau depicting the battleship must have been the most impressive in the procession as it included the section of the ship with those ten huge guns as well as many excited lads dressed as sailors and marines. Quite a ‘float’, wouldn’t you say (pun intended). Ah! well, happy times. But I think I’ll stick to my own mode of transport - my pony. Shanks’s of course. Tony Pelling

Concerned about your home being sold to fund your future care fees? The Issue

You probably own your home as joint tenants if you are a couple and solely if you are single. For couples this means you own it wholly, jointly and severally. Ultimately therefore you do not own it 50:50 as you might have assumed. You actually own all of it together and when one partner dies the surviving partner owns it solely and absolutely. It is sole and absolute ownership that enables a property to be taken into consideration as an asset by the local authority and puts the property in danger of needing to be sold to fund care.

The Reality

The Law (C.R.A.G - charging for residential accommodation guide) allows local authorities to assess your assets to determine if you need to pay for your own care. Currently if you have assets above £23,250, you are on your own and require care, you will probably have to pay for it all - currently averaging around £800 per week. Savings, cash and income would be used first and then your property would need to be taken into consideration. You would be expected to pay for all of your care until such time as your assets were depleted to below the £23,250 threshold. You would then pay for a proportion of your care until your assets were below £14,250 - at which point all your future care would be paid for.

The Solution

For couples, simply by changing the way you own your property well in advance of any care considerations i.e from joint tenants to tenants in common and by setting up two Trusts within a properly structured Will at the same time will in most cases, prevent your home from being taken into account by the local authority altogether should you ever require care in the future.

The children and/or whoever else is also nominated as Trust beneficiaries for that particular Trust will subsequently have access to that half of the property when the surviving partner dies. The first half of the property then is 100% securely in Trust for the beneficiaries and will not be at risk. As a result of this simple strategy the survivor is protected from having to sell the property to pay for their care should they need it because it is not possible to sell just their half of the property and the Crag guidelines clearly state that the market value of half a property is £0. The second half of the property will then ultimately go into Trust for access by the nominated beneficiaries when the surviving partner eventually dies. The beneficiaries will at that stage have both halves safe and secure in Trust and will be able to share and dispose of the property according to the wishes of the settlors (the original owners of both halves). By leaving 1/2 the property into Trust on first death, the surviving partner can still sell the property to downsize if they wish and are not restricted in any way with regards to what they wish to do to or with the property - it simply means that it is safeguarded and therefore will definitely be able to be appointed to the chosen beneficiaries when the time comes. For sole owners immediately conveying at least half of your property into Trust well in advance of any care consideration and becoming a Trustee and primary beneficiary of the Trust with others nominated to become beneficiaries after your death is usually enough to take away the risk of the property being considered as an asset to be sold if care is required as the property is not absolutely owned by yourself anymore and again it is not possible to sell half a house or force a Trustee to do something that is not in the ultimate best interest of the Trust beneficiaries. Call us now on 01273 911142 for a friendly chat about how this strategy could be of real benefit to you and your family.

For sole owners the process is simply to set up a Trust now and convey at least 1/2 of your property into it which will produce the same result.

The Reasoning

When you own your home as tenants in common you actually own half each. When the first partner dies, they leave their half into their trust. The surviving partner is the Trustee of that Trust and also the primary beneficiary which means that they have complete control over the property and what happens to it.
