HOVE PARK Another historical offering from local resident, Tony Pelling...

TALES OF GOLDSTONE BOTTOM... AND FATHER KNEW LLOYD GEORGE Well, no he didn’t, not personally anyway, but it is a famous schoolboy boast and Goldstone Bottom too can boast acquaintance with some pretty well known celebrities. The self-styled Prime Minister of Mirth, George Robey, who later went on to become one of the great Music Hall entertainers, appeared in an Albion shirt in 1903 in a match against West Norwood. He scored the first goal in a three-nil win. He went on to play for Millwall before concentrating on his stage career. In the 1960s another comedian, Jimmy Tarbuck, signed as a semi-professional for the Albion while he was working as a Butlin’s Redcoat at the Ocean Hotel, Saltdean. He played for the reserves as a winger and he often joked that he was so one-footed that he only bought one pair of football boots in his life because thereafter he only ever needed to replace one boot. In January 1971 he played in an Albion shirt in a charity match and had the “distinction” of missing a penalty. Presumably he used the wrong foot. From 1964 to 1970 Norman Wisdom was an Albion director, though he did don a club shirt on one occasion - for the accompanying photo with the players. At under 5ft 5in and less than 9 stone, it is little wonder they didn’t let him play, though what a wonderful entertainment it would have been. He wrote special words to the club’s theme tune “Good old Sussex by the sea”, still sung at home matches. Two British and Commonwealth heavyweight boxing champions had links with Goldstone Bottom. Tommy Farr took the title in 1937 and on 30th August that year fought Joe Louis in the Yankee Stadium, New York, for the world title. Joe had previously knocked out eight of his challengers and went on to KO the next seven too, but Tommy took him to 15 rounds and lost on a controversial points decision. The 50,000 crowd booed the result believing that Tommy had shaded it. After

Norman Wisdom in the Albion dressing room. Photo by Roger Collins from the Goldstone Wrap

he retired from the ring Tommy lived for a while at 93 Goldstone Crescent. One of his successors to hold the British title was Jack London who in his very early career fought a draw with Jack Pettifer in a bout at the Greyhound Stadium. The American pop star of the 1950s and 60s, Guy Mitchell, lived at 83 Goldstone Crescent while touring this country and Europe. He had many hits including “My Truly Truly Fair” and “Singing the Blues” but my favourite was “She Wears Red Feathers and a Hooley Hooley Skirt”. I like to think he got the inspiration for this song from a young lady he saw in our park. I keep looking! Oh! And I must brush up on Lloyd George; he must have been very important. Tony Pelling

HOVE PARK Introducing the next ‘healthy living’ article written by local personal trainer and nutrition adviser Mary Henderson...

HEALTHY LIVING... ANTI-STRESS STRATEGIES Modern stressors that trigger our “fight or flight” response wreak havoc on our digestive systems. The stress hormone cortisol increases blood pressure, blood sugar levels and has an immunosuppressive action. Stress hormones (glucocorticoids) activate enzymes which promote abdominal fat storage, which is why an apple shape is associated with stress-related weight gain. This takes a toll on our bodies and in the long-term can lead to weight gain, heart disease and diabetes. Minimising stress and your response to it is the ideal course of action. Mindfulness can help get above the situation and exercise is a great stressbuster. Training yourself to go for a short walk instead of comfort-eating is tough but achievable. Support your energy levels by maintaining steady blood sugar. Avoid eating when stressed and take time away from your desk for a balanced meal. Check you’ve included some carbs, fruit or veg and especially protein to slow the release of sugar into the blood and feed increased protein needs. Caffeine can focus the mind but try to recognise if it’s only upping your anxiety and further tipping your energy levels. Ditch the diet coke – find an alternative if you can – it’s as bad for the nervous system as it is for your insulin levels. Vita-

HOVE PARK News from The Church of the Good Shepherd in Dyke Road...

T4G@5! It’s all change at the Good Shepherd for our all-age service Time for God, which is now T4G@5. Young people and parents have been telling us that Sunday mornings can be a tricky time, with lots of different activities competing for attention. So we have moved our 10.15 service for young people, which is held in the hall, to 5pm on Sunday afternoon in church. (Our normal 10.15 service in church remains the same.) T4G@5 will be a lively and friendly service with worship songs, activities, reflections and discussions beginning at 5pm, followed by sandwiches, tea and cake at about 5.30. On the first Sunday of each month we will celebrate Communion together. The second and fourth Sundays will be a service of songs and praise. On the third Sunday of every month we will all still meet for the morning Family Service at 10.15. (No 5 o’clock that day.)

Artists Open Houses Festival The Church of the Good Shepherd is opening up as an Artists Open House for the May Festival again this year from Sunday 1st May. This will be an opportunity to view some exceptional artwork by a number of local artists in the beautiful setting of the church building. The church will be open from 10am-6pm on Saturdays (2-6pm on 21st May) and Sundays from 12-5pm. Watoto Children’s Choir – Oh, What Love!

If the world won’t stop for Sunday morning church, then Sunday morning church can adapt and move with the times. We would love you to join us – come along for song, prayer and delicious food at The Church of the Good Shepherd at 5pm.

DYKE ROAD The flower seller stands in Dyke Road, at its junction with Withdean Avenue. Period unknown, but could be either just before or soon after the 1914-18 World War. Until April 1928, this was just outside the Brighton boundary and Dyke Road Avenue was narrow and largely undeveloped. The terminus of the Dyke Road tramway was a few yards to the south-east. Note the old-style pillar letterbox against the fence to the right of the gas-lamp.

HOVE PARK Update from the Friends of Hove Park...

FRIENDS OF HOVE PARK... SPRING ACTIVITY IN HOVE PARK As storm Katie battered and deluged the South East we feared the Easter Egg trail might have to be cancelled. However, much to our relief, Easter Monday turned out dry and sunny, and the remnants of the blustery gales didn’t put off the queue of children eager to take part. In total 300 children followed the clues around the park. This year the trail took the form of a quiz with the numbers of various objects in the park as answers (see photo showing people gathering round the information board by the wildflower mound counting the number of yellow flowers illustrated). The face painting and glitter tattoos, new for this year, also proved very popular. We hope the sun also decides to shine on our next event but that it’s a bit less windy! At the Martlets Carnival, on Spring Bank Holiday Monday 30th May, we will again be having a stand alongside Brighton City in Bloom. The stand will be shared with the Friends of Three Cornered Copse and the Rangers and aims to help promote these organisations. We will be encouraging children to grow a sunflower from seed by providing a pot with compost and a seed. Face painting and glitter tattoos will be avail-

able along with some other entertainments for children and we will also have our customary photo display. The Friends’ clean up event in early March was well supported by both the scouts and the bilingual school volunteers and resulted in the park being spruced up a little. Information boards, signs and noticeboards were cleaned, quite a lot of litter removed, and the edges of some paths cleared of encroaching vegetation and fallen leaves. Following the success of this event we are intending to have another litter clearing session later in the year. Whilst many are content to relax in the park and leisurely enjoy the spectacle of the spring flowers, others make good use of the varied sporting and fitness facilities. Users of the gym equipment by the basketball court should now benefit from the concrete surround covered with artificial grass newly installed under each piece providing a more substantial and hardwearing footing. Information about activities and events and photographs of the park can be found on our website http://www.friendsofhovepark.org which provides links to other sites for further information about the park and its history. HOVE PARK Feeling brave and like doing something for charity...

HOSPICE SEEKS DARING FUNDRAISERS Dare yourself to do something brave and raise money for Martlets Hospice by abseiling 115 feet down Peacehaven Cliffs on Sunday 17 July. It’s an exciting sponsored challenge that’s great fun for teams or families to enjoy together. Open to anyone aged 8 or over; no previous experience is needed, just a sense of adventure and a head for heights. All equipment is provided and properly qualified, experienced instructors will help you to find your way down the spectacular cliff face. Clem Hunnisett from the Hospice’s Events Team said: “If you are the kind of person who likes to challenge yourself then this is for you! There are amazing views of the Channel as you edge your way down to the seafront from the top of the cliffs. We’d love more teams to take part this year; perhaps families or groups of workmates. It is a physical event, but it is something that anyone can do with a bit of bravery and lots of encouragement from their supporters! All money raised is vitally important and will go towards caring for our patients and their families during some of the hardest times in their lives.”

It costs just £20 to register for this challenge and the hospice is asking that everyone who takes part raises a minimum of £100 in sponsorship. As Martlets Hospice receives less than a third of its income from the NHS it relies on fundraising to provide its services free of charge to local people when they need them. To find out more, visit the Martlets Hospice website: www.themartlets.org.uk - or book your place by contacting Clem Hunnisett: clem.hunnisett@martlets.org.uk or call 01273 718780. Alcove shelving, storage and bookcases.

This week, 16 April, we were assisted by Park Ranger Will, our guest ranger for the day. Several jobs to do: cutting back trees overhanging the southern entry lane, removing a fallen spindle bush, and an old alder that had fallen at head height across our middle path, laden with ivy, and sinking slowly to block the way. We also removed a metal girder, which has successfully tripped up many walkers through the wood space. Thanks to Matt Duffell for the loan of his sledgehammer. As the rain started to fall, I started to wonder how long it took for the water absorbed by tree roots to reach the growing leaves at the edge of the tree tops. It’s a difficult question, and trees have developed several mechanisms to haul the water in against gravity. A mature oak tree can absorb 50 gallons of water in a day, so within a day or two a molecule of water can fall from the sky and reach a tree leaf. Three Cornered Copse, in April, is transformed from a lattice of bare branches to a

tly lawn, with several public pathways running through it. Different terrain made of mud, chalk, and more mud, nd Drive and Woodland Avenue. If you can imagine it, then you will understand the lengthy list of tasks for a typical work canopy of pale green, within days. A few hours of rain, with the increasing day length, helps this transformation. The birds are very active now, pairing and nest building. On our work day we spotted blue tits, sparrows, great tits, wrens, finches, magpies, robins and numerous wood pigeons. Frequent visitors to the copse will have noticed that the chalk bags, delivered in autumn, and rested over the winter on the top lawn, have been put to good use, building a path through the muddiest part of the woods. This was arranged by the council and a team of community payback people who moved several tons of hardcore, and wood chips, covering the areas which had become largely impassable, and raised the level of the path, providing a more permanent way through the higher wooded space. It also removed the eyesore of the chalk bags, source of several comments since their arrival. Enjoy Three Cornered Copse this spring, when it is at its best.

HOVE PARK Local things coming up on the near horizon...

HOVE CARNIVAL HERALDS START OF SUMMER An exciting fun-packed afternoon is promised with this year’s Hove Carnival at Hove Park on Bank Holiday Monday, 30th May, from midday. Always a popular family event to raise money for Martlets Hospice, the organisers are hoping for sunshine and clear skies. The main arena will be hosting local community groups with Samba dancers, Falconry and Flyball as well as the ever popular annual dog show where judges will be searching for the dog with the waggiest tail and the cleverest trick! Elsewhere in the park there will be plenty of stalls to choose from, along with children’s entertainment, amusements, funfair rides, cake stalls and rides on Hove Park’s miniature railway. Antonia Shepherd from the Hospice’s Events Team said: “Hove Carnival is always a calendar highlight that heralds the start of summer and we’re promising a wonderful afternoon of fun for all the family. It’s a day to celebrate our very supportive community so we’re giving lots of local groups the chance to perform and show off their skills in the main arena. There will be something there for everyone. We’re hoping to raise lots of money again this year to support the care of our patients and their loved ones during some of the toughest

times in their lives. The carnival is always a hugely busy day for stallholders too, so don’t forget to book a pitch soon before spaces run out.” For information on featuring your local group in the main arena or to book a stall please telephone Nicky on 01273 964200 or email nicky.david@martlets.org.uk. www.themartlets.org.uk

News of a great day out in the park in May...

FUNK THE FAMILY & FUNK THE FORMAT FESTIVALS 2016 SATURDAY 28TH & SUNDAY 29TH MAY Following two spectacular sell-out festivals, Funk The Family is back with a bigger, better line-up and second, adults-only, day: Funk The Format. Artists include: Soul II Soul, Norman Jay MBE, Rodney P, Skitz, Jamie Rodigan, DJ Format, Robert Luis (Tru Thoughts), Mr Bongo Soundsystem, Russ Dewbury and Harleigh Blu. Accelerating from 1,000 attendees at Hove Lagoon in 2014 to 4,500 attendees at Hove Park in 2015, team FTF introduce the festival scene to their elder sister, Funk The Format. Like Funk The Family, the brand new Funk The Format Festival is a champion of soul, latin, funk, reggae, disco, hip hop, house, jungle, jazz and, of course, funk. “Both Funk The Family and Funk The Format offer something that Brighton & Hove has been missing,” says FTF founder and director Lucy ‘Elle J’ Small. “I moved from London to Brighton & Hove nearly nine years ago to raise my family. There is so much to do here, but there was no event that offered something really credible, musical, creative and fun for me or my family.” A former freelance music journalist, Lucy ‘Elle J’ Small now presents her popular Funk The Format radio

show on Brighton & Hove’s Radio Reverb 97.2FM and promotes her Funk The Format Club Tropicana nights between curating the festivals and raising her two young boys. “Like Funk The Family, I firmly believe Funk The Format is filling a much-needed gap in Brighton’s music scene. There are several credible events here but they cater for either a very young demographic or indie/ electro music lovers. We want to bring that Notting Hill Carnival vibe to Brighton & Hove.” With that in mind, the team have announced that both Norman Jay MBE and Soul II Soul will play Funk The Format Festival. Meanwhile, Funk The Family announces its “Creatures of The Beach” theme and has already confirmed DJ Format, Harleigh Blu, King Porter Stomp, plus a plethora of outstanding, free family entertainment, including The Circus Project’s trapeze workshops, archery, family yoga, diabolo workshops, Cirque Du Funk big top, Punch & Judy shows, MB breakdancing and many Landscapes more to be announced.
