If you’re self-isolating or someone in your home has symptoms of the coronavirus, please double-bag all used tissues and keep them for 72 hours before disposing in your household waste. HOVE PARK Gaynor Wingham tells us about the joy of singing in Harmonessence choir…
SING YOUR HEART OUT We love music in our lives. The enjoyment and health benefits of singing are well documented. Choirmaster Danny Vice-Holt is filling Hove with music with his Harmonessence choir which meets on a Monday evening at Ralli Hall.
Danny is a professional musician, songwriter and singing teacher. He was a chef, but a bicycle accident several years ago broke his hand which pushed him into turning his love of music into a living and he started the Hove choir. He now also runs successful choirs in Lewes and Shoreham and the three choirs get together for concerts. What about the music? He doesn’t constrain the choirs to one type of music. If he hears a song which has, or could have, great harmonies, he will arrange it for the choir. The choirs have tried everything over the years: Rock, Pop, Soul, Funk, Folk, Jazz, Country, Metal, Gospel. Danny says it’s the best job ever as he gets to teach songs to people who love to sing and get such enjoyment from it. With all abilities and no auditions, all music is taught by ear. He loves seeing the enjoyment and happiness on people’s faces. The choirs are fun. Since the lockdown with Covid-19, all the choirs have moved online. It was a very quick change for everyone; one moment everyone was meeting in a room singing together and the next, everyone was singing into a computer screen and Danny was running choirs from his spare room! He thinks it
has worked rather well. It’s unfortunate they can’t all hear each other sing due to the online time delay but at least everyone can still be together this way. He commented his commute to work has dramatically reduced too! Danny gives online top tips on singing and during the lockdown has been running a free live singing assembly for children (but great for all ages!) on a Friday morning on Facebook. The choirs are looking forward to getting together again in person and rehearsing for a concert, but the virtual choir is a weekly event which keeps the group together and connected at this time of isolation. You can get more information online and he welcomes new members for a taster session. It may be just what you need! HOVE PARK This article is by Mary Henderson, a doctoral researcher in gut health…
EAT WELL AND ENJOY YOUR FOOD No one specific food or supplement can boost the immune system or prevent a viral infection such as COVID-19. There are dangerous myths and half-truths circulating more than ever about miracle foods. At best, taking supplements without good health advice is a waste of money and, at worst, can make us ill. Too much vitamin C or other antioxidant can actually dampen the immune response. What will help is a balanced and varied diet. Don’t add to your stresses right now by overly worrying about what you eat. Our bodies struggle to digest when stressed or anxious and food is a simple pleasure that we can enjoy right now which is good for our mental and social health. As the British Nutrition Foundation nicely put it, don’t make a hero out of a single micronutrient. There are many that play a role in a healthy functioning immune system. For example, iron
found in meat and vegetable sources is needed to maintain immune cells and having low levels of vitamin D is associated with a reduced immune response. Public Health England have recommended taking 10 micrograms of vitamin D a day to those likely not to be getting enough sunlight during lockdown. Your immune system also requires enough energy so get the right amount of calories and macronutrients for your energy needs. We all know the importance of eating a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. This will also feed your gut microbes which perform tons of essential functions in our bodies including our immune systems. So eat well and enjoy your food. Mary Henderson

SPRING BLOSSOM IN HOVE PARK Here are a few views around the nearly empty Hove Park that you may have seen when out for exercise or missed if you haven’t been in the park. The massed avenue of blossom has been spectacular as usual. On a smaller scale the whips planted a few years ago are growing well with the goat willow displaying its typical pussy willow catkins. The blackthorn is seen flowering on bare twigs as the leaves appear later, one way of distinguishing it from hawthorn whose leaves appear first followed by the flowers - planting both provides a longer flowering period. Stay safe and well in these unprecedented times. Friends of Hove Park

HOVE PARK News from Hove Park ward councillor Samer Bagaeen…
MEETING THE MOMENT: REMOTE MEETINGS PROTOCOLS I start off hoping that everyone is safe and well and that your loved ones are as well. With the lockdown now extended, and with our old way of doing things on hold for some time, and because we might never go back to the old way of doing things, I wanted to share with you some of the guidance around remote council meetings knowing that some of you will be joining these over the coming weeks and months. Government has put arrangements in place for the period 4 April 2020 to 7 May 2021 for Council and Committee meetings to be held via electronic means. The Coronavirus Act 2020 and the Flexibility of Local Authority Meetings Regulations 2020 are meant to enable formal, virtual full Council and Committee meetings to take place through ‘electronic, digital, virtual locations and telephone conferencing’. You will have a choice of how you join meetings as members of the public. The Council is collating guidance and suggestions as to best practice in establishing procedures for remote attendance and will be sharing these via the website. Our officers will need to amend these regularly as well as produce additional material specific to the technologies employed. In doing so, they should ensure that the needs of members of the public and members with disabilities who will wish to remotely access or attend a meeting are taken into account when considering the practicalities of establishing remote meetings. For us members, we have a protocol that means that where we attend remotely, we should always satisfy the following conditions: (i) we should be able to hear, and where practicable see, and be so heard and, where practicable, be seen by, the other Members in attendance; (ii) we should be able to hear, and where practicable see, and be so heard and, where practicable, be seen by, any members of the public entitled to attend the meeting in order to exercise a right to speak at the meeting; and (iii) we should be able to be so heard and, where practicable, be seen by any other
members of the public attending the meeting. The same rules apply to members of the public (ideally). When we attend remotely, we must ensure and verbally declare that there are no other persons present who are not entitled to be (either hearing or seeing) consideration of such items, and/or recording the proceedings. It’s going to be a steep learning curve for a lot of the people involved so let’s all work together to make all of our future meetings a success. Cllr Prof Samer Bagaeen FRICS MRTPI

HOVE PARK Local news…
PLANS FOR A NEW LIDL Plans have been submitted to Brighton & Hove City Council for a new Lidl discount supermarket at Unit 3, Goldstone Retail Park, in the former Toys R Us store. The plans include alterations to part of the customer car park to provide parking for disabled shoppers and parents. The proposed store is expected to create up to 40 new jobs and Lidl say that it will provide increased choice for local residents and reduce the need to travel. Comments from neighbours have been mixed. They are broadly supportive of the idea of a new supermarket but there are concerns about possible traffic congestion and pedestrian safety around the retail park. One neighbour said: “I support the proposal to bring what is currently a vacant unit back into use to provide a new retail offer into the area. The site has good parking facilities and can be easily accessed. Given the volume of residential development that is planned for the neighbourhood more retail provision in the locality is badly needed.” You can find more details of the proposals on the council’s planning register at https://planningapps. brighton-hove.gov.uk/online-applications/ - search for application BH2020/00549. A decision is due to be made by 5th June.

HOVE PARK Rachel Bridgeman looks back at VE Day in Brighton in May 1945…
“MY DEAR FRIENDS, THIS IS YOUR HOUR”
(Winston Churchill, 8 May 1945)
On 8th May 1945, Prime Minister Winston Churchill announced that Germany had surrendered. After six years of horror and bloodshed, the Second World War in Europe was over. Due to Covid 19, we are likely to be celebrating the peace and paying tribute to those who defeated fascism whilst isolated in our homes rather than rejoicing collectively as the people of our city did 75 years ago. Sallie will now be unable to share her memories with her community at St Leonard’s Church in West Hove as planned. These are her memories. Across Brighton and Hove, people flooded into the streets to share in the collective euphoria. “We Brits went a bit mad for a day or two.” Thirteenyear-old Sallie and her friend, Mary, walked into Brighton and joined in the jubilation at the Clock Tower. “People were drunk with happiness. Men and women were hugging and kissing each other. Glad to be alive. No more air raids. No more rocket attacks. Mary and I were swept away in a Conga line which took us down West Street. We walked home through the crowds along the seafront, past the smoking remains of a deck-chair bonfire (made by some high-spirited South African troops) and around which crowds had a grand sing-song – a bit like a scout camp. Back at home, we celebrated with Spam fritters and toasted each other with tea. I remember going to bed that night with the curtains drawn back. No black-out needed now. I was happy knowing that there would be no more air-raids. No nasty Nazi bombers.” Although VE Day marked victory in Europe, it did not mark the end of the war. That would not come until 15th August 1945 with the surrender of Japan. Today, Sallie reflects: “We had yet to discover how devastated the countries in Europe were and how many thousands of people were dead in horror camps. We knew nothing of the horrors that were to come and the use of the atomic bomb in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.” When we can once more freely and safely roam the streets of our fabulous city, why not learn
more about their fascinating history? Hove Actually Walking Tours are fun, informative and best suited to the incurably curious. Whether it’s your first visit or you have lived here your whole life, the tours are a great way to discover, uncover and experience the area. An update on this year’s VE Day anniversary celebrations…
VE DAY 75... Many community celebrations had been planned across the country for the 75th anniversary of VE Day over the bank holiday weekend of 8th to 10th May. Unfortunately, the majority of these have had to be postponed due to the Coronavirus lockdown. However, some solo pipers and town criers may mark the occasion from safe and suitable locations. The VE Day 75 Pageantmaster, Bruno Peek, is hoping that postponed events can be moved to the weekend of 15th to 16th August, when we will be able to celebrate both VE Day and VJ Day. For the latest information, visit: https://www.veday75.org/ Some people will be marking the anniversary with a “Stay at Home Street Party” on Friday 8th May by decorating their houses in red, white and blue and having a picnic in the front garden, whilst still practising safe social distancing. HOVE PARK A great idea by Brighton artist Denise Harrison to brighten up our daily exercise‌
OPEN WINDOWS 2020 Openwindows2020 came about as an idea after the open houses were postponed. I was due to show my work at Phoenix Open Studios where my practice is based. I thought it would be great if artwork could be displayed in windows throughout May instead so that people who were on their usual walk would have that walk brightened up by seeing art. It is also about getting everyone involved in creating art, an inclusive project that gives a creative purpose; we are all at home, so everyone in the household can partake. Phoenix Artspace will also be taking part. As we have a dedicated Instagram page, people can follow @openwindows2020 and tag their work #openwindows2020 to be featured; we also have a Facebook page openwindows2020. This means that even those in isolation can still see the artwork and if you live in a top floor flat, you can still show your work, making the project accessible to all. It has become so popular that open house groups from across the country are joining in; we also have three groups in Australia getting involved as well as France, Spain, Scotland and Hong Kong. This means that it has also become a great networking opportunity. If you pass a window with the @openwindows2020 sign in the window, this means that you can find out about that person’s artwork as it will be on the Instagram and Facebook page. HOVE PARK A stay-at-home event at 10.30am on Saturday 2nd May…
CHILDREN’S PARADE AT HOME Brighton Festival and Same Sky are inviting every child to take part in the Children’s Parade At Home to celebrate their creativity and imagination.
The annual Children’s Parade was due to take place on Sat 2 May to officially mark the start of Brighton Festival 2020 but the event had to be cancelled when social distancing restrictions were implemented due to the coronavirus outbreak. In partnership with award-winning community arts charity Same Sky, the stay at home event is open to everyone to have five minutes of fun during lockdown at 10.30am on Sat 2 May. Participants are encouraged to post their photos and videos on social media with #ChildrensParadeAtHome to capture the parade as a digital get-together to share online with friends, family, neighbours and across communities. John Varah, Artistic Director, Same Sky added: “Whether you want to conga around your kitchen, wave a flag from your window, blow a whistle from your balcony, shimmy in your sitting room or dress-up on your doorstep – anything goes at the Children’s Parade at Home! We want to celebrate young people’s creativity in all forms and keep the spirit of the Children’s Parade alive.”
Parade means, not only to the 5,000 children, teachers, parents and volunteers who take part every year but to all the families and visitors who enjoy watching this spectacular community event in the heart of Brighton. As we can’t be together physically, we hope this alternative parade will offer a sense of unity and joy at a time when we all need it the most.” The largest of its kind in Europe, Brighton Festival Children’s Parade has taken place for over 30 years, with more than 10,000 spectators lining the streets of Brighton city centre each year. The Parade is kindly sponsored by Southern Water. Further information is available on Brighton Festival and Same Sky websites (Brightonfestival.org / Samesky.co.uk) and social media. #ChildrensParadeAtHome
Same Sky artists have produced free online art resources to inspire parents and carers to make props with children to wear or play with on the day - from masks to musical instruments – the how-to guides will use recycled materials that can be found around the home. HOVE PARK News from the Friends of Three Cornered Copse…
LORD HENRY'S COPSE In between seeking out hand sanitiser and booking supermarket deliveries, the fair people of Hove have been taking their regulation lockdown exercise in Three Cornered Copse in greater numbers than ever before. And who can blame them?
It’s at this time of year that the copse is looking its best, with the cow parsley reaching shoulder height and the thousands of different shades of green bouncing the sunlight onto the paths threading their way through the forest floor. Our Facebook page has a few more ‘likes’ each day, as the warm sunshine brings a few new visitors to explore this small strip of land. Some parks around the country have been closed for part of the lockdown, so we're lucky this green strip from Hove Park to Green Ridge is there for our walks. The woodland paths are baked like concrete, a welcome change after the mud of February and March, a few bluebells are starting to appear, and the bird song seems louder than ever, unencumbered by the background roar of the A27. We have the 3rd Marquess of Abergavenny to thank for all this. He was Lieutenant-Colonel Henry Gilbert Ralph Nevill, who sold off a great deal of his estate in this area in the 1930s. The copse was bought by Hove Council in 1935, and other parts of West Hove were auctioned off in the later years.
The council paid, it is recorded, £1,524 for the copse. In today’s terms, based on average inflation, this is around £110,000, which sounds like quite a bargain. The surname of the Marquess gives a clue as to why many of our roads and spaces are named ‘Nevill’ of course. Lord Henry Nevill succeeded to the title at the late age of 73, and didn’t enjoy it for long. He was killed in a riding accident in 1938 when his horse stumbled over a wire while on a fox hunt in Groombridge, near Tunbridge Wells, at the age of 84. Since his only male heir had pre-deceased him, the title went to his nephew on his death. The Friends of Three Cornered Copse are somewhat dormant at this time, as are all groups and societies. When we are allowed to re-form, perhaps it will be interesting to look back to this time, when the copse was at its most popular, families taking a walk together, cyclists straining up the hill, and Woodland Drive becoming a quiet country lane again.
