CAMEO Come And Meet Each Other Cameo (Come And Meet Each Other) is a group for over 50s that has been running at Bishop Hannington Church, Nevill Avenue, Hove, since 1982. It was started to reach out to people in the community and has been doing just that for over 30 years. On Thursday mornings people start to arrive for coffee/ tea and biscuits at 10am and usually there are 40+ men and women whose ages have ranged from 50s up to late 90s! The first half of our meeting is a time when people can sit with one another, relax and have a chat and catch up. Newcomers are always made to feel really welcome and soon feel comfortable, as the CAMEO members are so friendly and easy going. The second half of our morning continues at 11am when there is a regular programme of varied topics including interesting speakers, quizzes, music and mornings when the members themselves can share experiences of life and work with the whole group (although people can choose to just listen). We recently celebrated our 30th anniversary as a group and enjoyed a wonderful celebration meal. We will
be having our next special meal at Christmas with a lovely roast dinner and all the trimmings. We also offer lunches and bible study every three weeks for anyone who would like to stay on after midday; this is not compulsory but around half of the group usually stay. In addition to our normal weekly Thursday meetings, we also organise an annual summer trip. In the last couple of years we have visited Portsmouth and went on a smashing boat trip and went up the Spinnaker Tower. Another great day out was when we visited Guildford, had a trip on the canal boats and had a delicious cream tea. We charge our members a £1.50 entrance fee, which includes refreshments and the entertainment. For those people who like to stay for the two-course lunch and bible study, they pay an extra £2.50. CAMEO is not run to make a profit but to provide a friendly meeting point for anyone in the community who feels isolated or lonely or to make new friends. It really is an extremely diverse group and we love it that so many different folks feel they want to be there on a Thursday morning. Why don’t you pop in sometime soon?

HOVE PARK The monthly update from The Friends of Hove Park...
THE FRIENDS OF HOVE PARK The most frequently encountered people working in our parks are the gardeners, but they are not the only ones. Less visible on a day-to-day basis are the park rangers. These were set up by the council in 2008 to patrol the parks, provide education and interpretation, and assist and involve community groups (further information can be found on the council’s website at http://www. brighton-hove.gov.uk/content/leisure-and-libraries/ parks-and-green-spaces/park-rangers). Hove Park’s ranger was Charlie Yates, who has provided a great deal of encouragement and practical help to the Friends. He has helped us at our events this year by providing equipment (a gazebo for the carnival and display boards for photographs) and practical help such as setting up the boards for the Easter Egg Trail clues and driving home the posts for the Friends’ banner at the carnival (see picture). He also designed the wildflower mound near the playground in the shape of an ammonite shell and arranged its construction. The wildflower plugs and grass and wildflower seed were added to the mound by Charlie
Photo of Charlie hammering in post at Martlets. and the volunteers during a planting day in April. Now, after thirteen years with the council including four as a ranger, Charlie has left to start his own business, and we reluctantly said farewell to him at our recently held AGM and wish him well in his new venture. His replacement has yet to be officially confirmed. At the AGM the Friends’ progress and activities over our first year were reviewed and next year was anticipated. Following the business items, Charlie gave a brief talk on the council’s work in conservation (part of his remit as a ranger) and the local biosphere project (http:// biospherehere.org.uk/). He described how this project could be a source of funding for the Friends’ activities in the area of conservation and interpretation. We would welcome volunteers to help at our gardening sessions and other activities, and with general organisation. If there are any graphic designers reading this, your skills would be especially welcome. There are currently three notice boards in the park: inside the playground (this can only be read from inside the fence), near the café and on the western Droveway entrance, but many people seem unaware of their existence. Please look at these boards - they include information on our activities. For further information, to leave comments or to become a member, please visit our website http:// www.friendsofhovepark.org .

HOVE PARK Introducing the next ‘healthy living’ article written by local personal trainer and nutrition adviser Mary Henderson...
EVERYBODY ACTIVE, EVERY DAY This is the title of a government paper published this September on tackling the high levels of physical inactivity, the fourth largest cause of disability and disease in the UK. Going to gym classes, taking up running or joining a sports team are all great ways of increasing our physical activity. However let’s look at some simple ways to make activity part of your daily routine. Get off the bus/train a few stops early and walk the rest of the way. Take the stairs/walk the escalators. Cycle or walk to work/school – even a few days a week or just one way to work. Park further away from your destination and walk; it’s often cheaper.
Stand up regularly or do tasks on your feet. Get yourself a walking app or a step counter for a few pounds off amazon. Monitor your progress and impress yourself! Mary Henderson is a qualified personal trainer, fitness instructor and Health and Nutrition (BSc) student. For more articles and advice on health, fitness and nutrition, visit her site www.feelgoodfactor.org.uk
Don’t just watch the kids play, join in a game of hopscotch or hide and seek. Limit TV time and go for a short walk after dinner. Go for a 10-15 minute walk in your lunch break. Get into gardening – more time on your feet!

Q. What is inheritance tax? A. Inheritance tax is payable on death and is generally payable if an individual’s estate is more than £325,000 (using current limits). The amount of tax payable depends on several factors including the value of your estate, who the beneficiaries of your estate are and whether you have made lifetime gifts. Q. I have assets worth £500,000 and want to leave everything to my husband. Will he have to pay inheritance tax on the amount over £325,000? A. No inheritance tax is payable because your spouse is an exempt beneficiary.

plex area Inheritance Tax is, our Trust and Estate Support Team at Humphrey & Co have highlighted some at can arise in respect of Inheritance Tax to serve as a guide. Q. Will my husband’s estate then have to pay on the assets he has inherited from me? A. It depends; if your husband’s estate is less than £650,000 at the time of his death no inheritance tax will be payable. Q. I have been living with my partner for several years, would my estate have to pay inheritance tax on my death if I leave everything to him? A. If your estate is worth more than £325,000 then yes inheritance would be payable as there is no exemption for couples that are not married or not in a civil partnership. It is vital that you have a valid will in place otherwise your partner will not be entitled to your estate under the rules of intestacy on your death.

Q. What if I make gifts in my lifetime; are they taken into account when calculating the inheritance tax liability? A. Again this depends; this time on the value of the gifts made and if they were made within 7 years of your death. There are however various exemptions and reliefs which can apply to gifts so that they are not subject to inheritance tax even if they are made within the 7 year period. For a free half an hour consultation to discuss your particular matter please contact Jonathan Cooke or Sue Pocklington on 01273 775814. This Q & A should be seen as an introduction to the subject of inheritance tax and we recommend that you contact a qualified professional if in any doubt.

THE CHOIR OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD The Church of the Good Shepherd has a strong musical tradition. At the Sunday morning Eucharist - bar the family service (held on the third Thursday of the month) - an anthem is sung and the music ranges from the 17th century to the modern. In the recent past Choral Evensong, an Advent and Christmas Carol services were also regular features of church life; however, falling choir numbers mean that this is no longer the case. Currently the choir, when fully available, number 10 in total. At the risk of stating the obvious, we would be delighted to welcome new members, so if you can read music and would like to try please get in touch. A recent yearly event has been Hymns and Pimm’s (and sometimes accompanied by a hog roast) where in each July normally 70 or so people sing in the vicarage garden aided by a glass of Pimm’s. The “Time for God” services that take place contemporaneously in the hall use a great variety of modern hymns. The current Director of Music, Derek Froud, has an extensive knowledge of the Anglican musical tradition and has

sung in, conducted and tutored choirs over many years. The church is lucky enough to have an excellent twomanual Harrison organ with an organ case by WHR Blacking. Mrs Moor, great benefactress in founding the church, was determined that music should be an important part of church life at the Good Shepherd. To this end the then church warden approached Harrison and Harrison of Durham, one of the world’s most famous organ builders. It took over a decade for the organ to be constructed, but from 1939 to the present day the organ has supported the choir and allowed music to be central to the services held at the church. One story from a junior chorister, who was a member of the choir in the 1950s, is that in those days they were paid for attending services – in cigarette cards! If you don’t know what they are, may I suggest you ask anyone over the age of 60. Nicholas Dunn-Coleman

Flu occurs every year. It’s a highly infectious disease that can lead to serious illness. Older people and those with long term health conditions are among the most at risk from flu. The best way to avoid catching and spreading flu is by having a vaccination before the flu season starts.

UPDATE FROM THE FRIENDS OF THE THREE CORNERED COPSE Repair work on the long flight of steps. At our last workday on Saturday 20th September 2014 we carried out some more repair work on the long flight of steps from the top path to the middle path. The steps are located by the upper twitten leading to Woodland Avenue. Under the excellent guidance of our Park Ranger, we dug out the broken steps and replaced the stays with new oak posts (in keeping with the natural surroundings). We also added a new step at the bottom. This project will make the steps safer to use in the winter months when the area can be more slippery. The team also continued with some clearance work at the top of the copse and our general litter picking duties! Unfortunately the copse has suffered with ‘fly-tipping’, where a few people have been using the copse as a dumping ground for green waste. Our Ranger has attached a number of notices about ‘antifly-tipping’ and ‘anti-graffiti’ so there is a clear visual reminder of the problem, and it is hoped this will stop any future incidents. At our next workday we will include inspecting the stakes supporting the new silver birch trees and adjust them if necessary. Some seem too loose in the ground, whilst others have ties too tight after growing in the summer sun. Future projects include erecting information boards, with a separate sub-committee looking into the design and location of the boards. If you would like to join our friendly team, please do come along to our next workday on Saturday 22nd Nov 2014, 10.00am until 1.00pm (stay as long as you like). We always meet at the bench near the silver birch trees at

CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL St Peter’s Church, West Blatchington, would love to invite you to our second annual Christmas Tree Festival that is being held from Wednesday 26th to Saturday 29th November 2014. Our official grand opening will take place on Thursday 27th November when local author Peter James will open the festival. The church will display 20 trees, beautifully decorated by community groups and local businesses, on the theme of ‘Christmas Around The World’. The trees will represent 20 different nations as diverse as Australia, Ireland, Indonesia, Christmas Island and England. There will be a chance to choose your favourite tree, and the community group with the most votes will win a small prize. You are welcome to stop and write the name of someone you will be thinking about this Christmas on a star and hang it on our Memory Tree. The church will be offering refreshments, with homemade cakes, a craft stall and a treasure hunt for the children, as well as a grand draw. At 1pm on Saturday 29th November, the Hangleton Youth Brass Band will be giving a concert in the church. Everyone is welcome.
The festival is a fundraising event for the Martlets Hospice and St Peter’s Church. Last year was our first year of running the festival and we raised £1,350 for the Martlets. This is a cause which is very close to the hearts of many people in our community, and we are happy to be supporters of this wonderful charity. Entry to the festival is £2 for adults and 50p for children. For more information contact Zoe Smith, telephone: 01273 732459. If you have an open fire, as much as 80% of the heat goes straight up the chimney. With a wood burning stove you’ll benefit from at least three times more heat. So you’ll just be burning wood - the original carbon neutral fuel - not money. Be part of the renewable revolution. Energy Wake Up specialises in the supply and installation of energy-efficient wood burning stoves. From consultation to installation.
