Health Tip

Goodness, November already and the year is flying by! So what has November to offer apart from dropping temperatures and shorter days? Well there is Bonfire Night on the 5th which can be a nice evening out with the family ( but not the dog!). On Sunday 13th we have Remembrance Sunday and if you have any Scottish connection of any kind use St. Andrew’s Day on the 30th as the perfect excuse to have a wee glass of whiskey and to dance a reel!

HOVE PARK Another historical offering from local resident, Tony Pelling...

TALES OF GOLDSTONE BOTTOM... STUPID BOY Aviation was in its infancy in the early 20th century, and when Shoreham Aerodrome was established in 1910 it was among the earliest in this country to become licensed. Other early sites have since changed their use and now Shoreham is regarded as Britain’s oldest licensed airfield still in operation. During the First World War the Royal Flying Corps used Shoreham as a training school and reserve base and further military airfields were established in this area at Telscombe Cliffs and Goldstone Bottom. The precise site of the airfield in our valley is something of a mystery. In 1919 a respected town guide of the day reported that “Hangleton Aerodrome” was visible from trains on the Dyke Railway but there is no reference to an airfield of that name in the RFC documents held at the Public Record Office. It is now regarded as much more likely that the airfield in question was on West Blatchington Farm, perhaps on the field where the students of Blatchington Mill School now play football. Certainly there was an airfield thereabouts which was offering joy-rides in its “Avro Air Fleet” in the early 1920s. The early years of World War Two threw up another local mystery. A fighter plane shot down in a “dog-fight”

Avro Bi-plane, type 504

over Goldstone Bottom crashed in Portland Road. In 1996 the crash site was excavated and the pilot’s remains were found in the wreckage despite a report that his family had buried him in 1940 and witnesses who saw him eject and land safe and well. Can one single seat plane have three possible pilots? Hmmm! One witness of that “dog-fight” was a junior clerk working in Hove Town Hall who had joined the Home Guard while awaiting call up to the RAF thus becoming the archetypal “young Pike” of the much later TV favourite, “Dad’s Army”. As he and a colleague watched the battle overhead they saw a pilot eject from his stricken plane and parachute slowly down towards Dyke Road. At the thought of being the first to capture a German pilot they grabbed their rifles and bikes and pedalled furiously and excitedly towards Hove Park and up through the Three Cornered Copse to arrive breathless at the landing site just in time to see the pilot carried away in an ambulance. That pilot was Polish, one of ours! We all know what Captain Mainwaring would have said. But……that young man was Ken Fines who, after serving in the RAF took up a career in town planning, eventually becoming Assistant County Planning Officer for East Sussex before returning to Brighton as Borough Planning Officer. In his retirement Ken wrote a superb, much acclaimed, “History of Brighton and Hove”. No, Captain Mainwaring, he was certainly not a “stupid boy”. Tony Pelling

Most people who come along have not had any experience of Agility before. Having said that, we welcome more experienced Agility goers too… This is very much a social get-together whilst enjoying an activity for our dogs. I am just finishing my Fun Agility Coaching Diploma and also have the support of a couple of friends who are very experienced in competition Agility over many years. We have basic Fun Agility equipment (including weaves, tunnel, see-saw, jumps and hoop), which we set up ready for your arrival. We always make sure that the equipment is being used safely for all participants. FOR DOGS ness plan to run Activity Days. Our Dogs Club strap line is “It’s all about the dogs” and these Activity Days are for us to have great fun with our dogs in a social way. We ran a very successful ‘Fun Activity Day for Dogs’ event at Waterhall in August and raised over £1,000 for Brighton’s Retired Greyhound Trust. At this event we had a Fun Agility Course as well as the traditional stalls, dog brain-teasers, musical sits and two show rings for competitions (including Waggiest Tail, My Dog’s Got Talent, Fastest Sausage Eater… etc). There are loads of ideas for future Activity Days to come; however the Fun Agility is a very popular one, so we decided to make this a regular slot to start things off. Due to the dark nights drawing in, we’re in the transition period of moving from a weekday evening to a weekend morning… Our next date for your diary is… Saturday 12th November 2016 - 10.30am-12.30pm, directly opposite The Old Rec Café, at Hove Recreation Ground (Old Shoreham Road/Shirley Drive entrance). We hope to make this a regular meet-up…most likely monthly.

Our Dogs Club Facebook page always has up-to-date info, plus our Dogs Club website (www.dogsclub.co.uk), and we can add your email address to our database to inform you of new and up-and-coming dates for your diary. Please send any requests/enquiries to Kate at dogsclub@outlook.com.

HOVE PARK Introducing the next ‘healthy living’ article written by local personal trainer and nutrition adviser Mary Henderson...

THE MIGHT OF THE SUPERMARKET GIANT The Brexit vote was declared by many as an act of the everyday man and woman to claim back their right to be heard. Today we have this parallel where we feel empowered as consumers and can have everything we want on demand with every need catered for. However, we also feel powerless in the face of increasing house prices, foreign affairs and debacles such as the #SouthernFail fiasco. Problems facing society are different sides of a multiplesided dice - one side: poverty increases in parts of the world; another: lifestyle diseases such as obesity are rising; and another: climate change accelerates. But we all do have power to impact our own lives, the lives of those around us and not to mention the planet we share. Small steps not just performed every now and then, but every day, lead to great transformations. 120kcal a day less equals roughly 12.5-pound weight loss a year; taking healthier snacks to work would make healthy snacking more socially acceptable; and using up what’s in your fridge would reduce food waste and help the environment. Every year, 1/3 of food produced worldwide is wasted and around 1/3 of this loss is household waste. Certain supermarkets have teamed up with the likes of Foodshare to distribute unsold in-date items to food

banks and now print anti-food waste ideas on reusable shopping bags. Who’d have thought it? They have bowed to the pressure of consumer demand and, in turn, are influencing consumer habits. We can all effect change if we act collectively.

CHANGES IN HOVE PARK There have been a number of changes recently in Hove Park and more will be happening in the coming months. Building of the café extension should be starting soon. Inevitably the work to provide improved facilities will cause some disruption but every effort is being made to minimise this. The gardening team has had a welcome increase in manpower enabling it to start tackling some rather neglected areas of the park. The plan is to make these both look better and be easier to maintain. You may have already noticed some of the differences. There have also been several changes in the Cityparks Ranger team. Neil Doyle is the new Ranger for Hove Park and will be helping at various events during the year. Our crocus planting event, part of the Purple4Polio campaign, is on Friday 28th October at 10am, meeting at the café. The 5,000 purple crocuses will be planted between the railings and the miniature railway track loop at the bottom of the Droveway.

HOVE PARK We are getting another pack of 50 free trees this autumn from TCV (The Conservation Volunteers), funded by OVO Energy as part of the continuing ‘I Dig Trees’ programme. Our ‘wildlife and shrubs’ pack of whips will contain goat willow, hawthorn, dogwood, guelder rose, and blackthorn (blackthorn instead of last year’s wayfaring tree). As a further step in improving wildlife support in the park, three different types of bat boxes have been purchased. Two of these are made of woodcrete (a mixture of sawdust, concrete and clay which is long lasting, rot proof and has excellent thermal properties) and one of untreated durable timber. The boxes will be put up by the council’s arboricultural team. If you would like to learn more about bats and ways of helping them in your garden see the Wild about Gardens Week website (www.wildaboutgardensweek.org.uk) which includes an attractive downloadable booklet ‘Stars of the Night’ as well as other information. Lastly, Snowdog Marty has been a welcome colourful addition to the southern end of Hove Park. He is leaving us on November 27th and will join his Snowdog pals for a festive themed event on December 4th and 5th before they are auctioned on December 6th to raise funds for the Martlets Hospice. Also for the hospice, the family friendly 5k Snowdog Dash is being held in the park on Sunday 6th November at 11am.

HOVE PARK You really can’t beat a wood burning stove. Andy Genovese can help...

WINTER IS COMING... In an unassuming cobbled mews close to Hove Station a quiet revolution is fermenting. Andy Genovese, trading as Hanover Builder, has determined to change how we heat our homes. And he’s hoping for nothing less than a solid fuel revolution.

The Wood Burner showroom has 40+ stoves on display (probably the biggest display in Brighton), with two live fired models so you can see what they’re like in action. The showroom’s open every Friday and Saturday between 10-3pm, and is situated half way along Cambridge Grove opposite the Pharmacie, a coffee roastery, that offers a delicious selection of coffees for you to sip while you browse.

He says: ‘With gas and electric bills frequently exceeding a thousand pounds a year, it comes as a surprise to many that up to a third of your heating bill can be eliminated using a modern wood burning appliance. Modern wood stoves are frequently 80+% efficient, meaning you can fuel a 5kW appliance for a little over £80 a year, with no standing charges, no direct debits, minimal maintenance costs and the knowledge that the fuel is carbon neutral.’ The good news is that even though much of Brighton & Hove is within a smoke control area, this doesn’t pose an issue with modern DEFRA approved stoves whose use is permitted within such areas. ‘Over the years I’ve sourced stoves from suppliers who offer good value and require the minimum of modifications to be compliant with building regulations. Almost all of the stoves I stock are approved for smoke control areas and are suitable for 12mm hearths, which makes for a straightforward installation’. ‘The bulk of the stoves I sell are 5kW appliances which don’t require airbricks and some can be supplied and fitted for under £1400, most with the assurance of a five year warranty, and some up to ten. Our British-made flue liners have guarantees of up to 25 years - I’ve yet to come across a gas boiler with a similar guarantee or running costs!’

New additions for Autumn 2016 include stoves from Firenzo of New Zealand – promising a 10 hour burn time. Or you could check out the Henley of Ireland with their stunningly good value ‘Druid’ range. Then there’s the highly popular initiative introduced by Ekol and Saltfire who are offering burnished iron doors on their stoves. Or the new models from Town & Country in Yorkshire, Broseley in Shropshire, and the extended warranties on the FDC range might be of interest. This is wood burner installation made simple, as the Wood Burner Showroom has evolved into a one-stop shop. As well as a place to peruse stoves and choose a hearth, Andy has collaborated with local HETAS fitters, chimney sweeps, log suppliers and local businesses to ensure the whole process can be accessed from one point. So, if you want to be part of a renewables revolution, call in at 19a Cambridge Grove one Friday or Saturday to discuss setting yourself free from the tyranny of the utility companies. HOVE PARK Update from the Friends of Three Cornered Copse...

AUTUMN IN THREE CORNERED COPSE The latest work day for the Friends of Three Cornered Copse started in a gloomy dark morning, as thick cloud promised to deliver the forecasted rain for the day. But again we escaped the showers and the nine of us which formed the work party began our task of Woodland Management. When I say “Woodland”, I refer to the small coppice at the top of the copse, in the east corner, near Woodland Court. And when I say “Management”, I mean clearing the dead and dying wood from between the struggling trees. This area, we recall, (perhaps not accurately), was planted after the 1987 storm, when the copse was devastated by the wind. The evidence of this is the straight rows of similar aged trees, some still retaining their plastic collar, left to protect the saplings from rodents and rabbits. Over the years the debris from the growing woodland has mounted up; in parts there is no real forest floor, and the surviving trees are competing with the invading species such as alder and sycamore. Under supervision of the Park Ranger, we took down dead and dying trees, cut the dead branches from the larger ones and cleared the forest floor of the fallen wood. In a few hours we had built a large woodpile, ready for chipping onto the path, before the ground starts to soften. The colours of autumn are starting to take over the foliage in the copse. The recent dry weather has kept the leaves on the branches while they lose the green and assume the golden, as chlorophyll deserts the tissues, and the foliage senescence begins. Look along the edge of the meadow in the next few weeks to see the beech trees turning, usually a glorious sight in the sunshine. Last month we had a different work day. It was the first we’d organised on a week-day, and it was a pleasure to welcome a few newcomers, who are unavailable at the weekend for our usual work sessions. The exercise was to tackle the litter that had accumulated over the summer. An impressive sixteen black bags were filled, so a huge thank you to those that took part in the clean-up. We’ll be holding a few more of these week-time work

sessions; for details and dates, please look at our website or Facebook page. Simon Baxendale

HOVE PARK A good way to find some original Christmas gifts…

CHRISTMAS ARTISTS OPEN HOUSES – 281 DYKE ROAD If you have never been to one of Brighton & Hove’s Artists Open Houses, now might be the time to have a look. It’s not just an art exhibition or shopping experience, it’s not just a café with homemade cake, it’s also a chance to meet people and fulfil that most English of obsessions of snooping behind the doors of those homes we walk by daily. 281 Dyke Road will not disappoint... What happens when two artists with five children buy the ugliest house on Dyke Road? The answer was a lot of hard work and loving restoration, in an attempt to open the house to the public within 10 weeks, for the Artists Open Houses last May. Artists Sarah Jones and Adam Bracey have taken on the challenge of restoring their Arts and Crafts home on Dyke Road in order to continue the open house Sarah has run for many years. Brought together by tragedy when Adam’s wife died, they had already been exhibiting work together for a number of years via gallery exhibitions and open houses. They have now started a new chapter, combining their families of five children and two cats, at 281 Dyke Road. “The house was slightly unloved and uncared for, it was the ugliest house we had viewed (from the outside) when we were looking for our new home, so we very nearly didn’t go and have a look at all. When we got there and walked in we realised immediately it was a jewel. It has wonderful Arts and Crafts details with stained glass, a galleried landing, wood-panelled rooms, and even a hidden servants’ staircase in a cupboard!” Milton House has had previous incarnations in Sarah’s former homes. It started with just a handful of artists and now shows the work of at least 20 makers; it has

been voted by the public onto the best house list for the last six years. “We now show so many varied things ranging from jewellery, ceramics, oil painting, prints and linocuts to cushions, bags and soft toys.” The house will probably continue to evolve for the next decade as there is so much to do. The building is beautiful, full of strange and interesting detail - it feels like something of a Cinderella project. “This Christmas show will bring the house alive for us and we hope lots of people come and enjoy both the house and artworks.” Milton Artists Open House 11am - 6pm, November 26th, 27th and December 3rd, 4th, 10th & 11th 281 Dyke Road BN3 6PD (at the top of the Droveway)
