We offer incredible new versions of food and drink that you might find familiar. We have sodas made in house with some help from our centrifuge machine. They have around one tenth of the sugar of regular sodas. Our cocktails are crafted with loving care using house made essences, bitters and artisanal spirits. Some of our cakes have no added sugar. Some are completely dairy free. We are really proud of our velvety, house made, organic cashew and tiger nut milk blend.

Our coffee has to be tasted to be believed. We only use the best butter, virgin coconut oil (for our many non dairy/vegan creations) and extra virgin olive oil for dressing. Our tea is brewed in clean glass, to the perfect temperature.

HOVE PARK FUN PALACE... After some miserably cold and rainy days it was a great relief that it was dry for the Fun Palace. Many people were out enjoying the beautiful autumn sunshine and the various activities around the café. The free event, organised by the Friends, included Same Sky children’s workshops, sporting activities provided by the Hove Park Tennis Club and Riptide Health & Fitness, and opportunities to learn new skills and take part in varied creative activities offered by a number of local people. HEALTHY LIVING - KETO DIETS... ‘Keto’ comes from ketones which are the source of energy being used when our body is using fat regardless of whether we’re following a ‘keto’ diet. You can produce ketones and not lose weight if your fat intake exceeds your daily energy requirements. The diet consists of eating less than 50g of carbohydrate, 75% total calories from fat and 15% from protein. You still need to exercise portion control. Weight loss requires negative energy balance: eating less than the energy you’re burning. Initial keto weight loss is rapid but can induce yo-yo dieting which is associated not only with weight gain over the long-term but early mortality. The keto diet is a form of ‘low carb’ diet which effectively gets you to lower your carbohydrate intake which is often the source of excess calories. Successful sensible and safe diets are those that can be maintained as part of a rounded healthy lifestyle with gradual weight loss and balanced nutrition. Anecdotally we may see friends ‘successfully’ losing weight but varying results can simply be explained by looking at the whole picture: the amount of daily activity, other lifestyle factors like stress and sleep, and body composition – is fat loss needed? This is considered a fad because it is not balanced and can easily lead to nutrient deficiencies, nausea, headaches, tiredness,

insomnia, poor exercise tolerance and constipation. Furthermore, it’s not advised for people with pancreatic, kidney, liver or fat metabolism problems because of its high fat content which puts added pressure on these organs essential for fat metabolism. MARTLETS EARTHWORKS First 12-week Open Access Course starting the week of 4 November 2019 Earthworks is a space for bereaved men to meet and get together to grow, harvest, tend and maintain Martlets’ new allotment. Throughout the year Martlets will be offering sessions on mornings, afternoons, evenings and on a Saturday. Previous gardening experience is not required and attendees are free to take on whatever jobs interest them, be it lighter work pricking out seedlings or getting stuck into digging and clearing. The Earthworks course will run for 12 weeks and is ‘Open Access’, meaning that any bereaved man in Brighton and Hove and the surrounding areas is welcome to attend; you do not have to have a previous connection with Martlets. The Earthworks counsellor will provide a welcoming and supportive environment in which to work and the session starts with a cuppa in the allotment shed around the wood burner. Sharing experiences of loss while working with the natural cycle of life through the seasons can be a positive and healing experience. HOVE PARK News from the Friends of Three Cornered Copse...

THE RETURN OF THE MUD On a cold, windy October Saturday, under leaden skies, pregnant with rain, our loyal volunteers gathered for our latest workday. And what a turnout. Featuring twelve adults, two toddlers, one dog, and our Park Ranger Neil, we set about our tasks in Three Cornered Copse. The main work item was controlling the large leaf ivy which has been slowly taking over control of the lower part of the wooded copse. One of us has identified it as Persian ivy (Hedera Colchica), one of the innocent garden centre plants that perhaps has been bought to cover a garden wall, but has spread into our parkland and competes with the native English ivy. This type of ivy is fast growing and covers the ground rapidly, and climbs our trees. Some of the root stems we weeded out had the diameter of a drainpipe. We control it to preserve the diversity of the vegetation along the woodland floor and prevent its domination over the native ivy. We seem to have a fascinating xenophobia about “invasive” species such as this ivy. Take the Spanish bluebell, the harlequin ladybird, Japanese knotweed and the demonised grey squirrel. All found their way, among many others, to our shores, often assisted by a human agent of some vintage for some purpose. And all of these, incidentally, can be found in Three Cornered Copse, at the right time. But given a few centuries, we tend to overlook their origin, and regard them as native. The rabbit, fallow deer and the house mouse were all introduced in the past but we now regard them as quintessentially British. It’s somewhat ironic that our native badgers are only the ones being culled, having been around for at least 250,000 years in these islands, according to fossil evidence. We also cleared some of the growth of weeds around the silver birches in the copse, at the foot of the green, restoring the pathway through the middle alongside the coronation stone. As the pathways turn to mud, the more thoroughfares we can use help to avoid slipping and sliding through the tree roots. As the slate grey sky yielded to a large dark cloud, the heavy rain began to fall persistently, and we all squelched back home through the mud. This is the second year of the Christmas Gift Fair at West Blatchington Windmill (191 Holmes Avenue, BN3 7LH), to raise the profile of the 190-year-old windmill which has been restored and open to the public for 40 years. Last year visitors commented on the friendly and relaxing atmosphere and the quality of gifts on offer. There will be a good variety of stalls selling button art, Brightonthemed board games, gemstone and crystal pendants, pottery and papercraft, embroidered and embellished textile gifts, book art and gifts, watercolours, mosaics, personalised Christmas ornaments, candles, and knitted and crocheted gifts, plus a range of windmill souvenirs. The Voice Project is an awardwinning choir which, for the past 15 years, has created large-scale site-responsive staged choral performances in wonderful architectural spaces and landscapes. It is an un-auditioned choir working with professional solo singers, instrumentalists, composers and poets. All the music is specially written for the choir. This autumn they have launched Voice Project Brighton and their first performance will be at All Saints Church in The Drive at 7pm on Saturday November 16th. They will performing “...And is This a Dream?”, a new staged piece for a choir of over 100 voices and soloists. There will be 12 songs, each one of which depicts a dreamscape. The audience will be invited on a journey through the interior of a building that has been inhabited by others for over a century, evoking the half-lit, liminal world of dreaming. HOVE PARK An appeal to help people in fuel poverty...

BRIGHTON LIONS CLUB PROJECT WENCESLAS Brighton Lions Club are once again launching Project Wenceslas, a campaign to help combat fuel poverty. People who receive the annual Winter Fuel Payment and feel they do not need it are invited to donate the amount to Brighton Lions. Excess winter deaths in Brighton & Hove are slightly higher than both England and the South-East. People in difficulty will be contacting agencies such as Age UK who will refer them to Brighton Lions. Direct applications will not be accepted to ensure all the donated money goes to the people who really need it. Brighton Lions will make payments direct to the energy supply companies, not the individual beneficiaries, whose details will not be known to the Lions. “Last winter we spent more than £9,000,” said Pete Dilloway, President of Brighton Lions Club. “That was an increase of £1,000 on the previous year so there really is a need even in this, the so-called affluent South-East.

One of those we helped last winter had been admitted to hospital with hypothermia having been too scared of running up bills to use enough heating.” Donations can be made by credit/debit cards through Brighton Lions Club’s website at www.brightonlions. org.uk or cheques payable to Brighton Lions Wenceslas should be sent to Brighton Lions Club, c/o 9 Westfield Crescent, Brighton, BN1 8JB. People sending cheques are asked to confirm that their donations may be treated as Gift Aid so that the value of the donation can be increased by 25%.
