HOVE PARK
WELCOME TO THE OCTOBER EDITION OF HOVE PARK LIVING We hope you are enjoying the stunning colours currently in the Park. The beauty of Autumn never fails to take my breath away! We have our usual mix of local information and articles for you this month. We have news of local Christmas Open Houses as well as a competition to win a family night out at the local Hove pantomime. We also have a summary of local organised firework displays in Hove so you can pick which one you would like to attend. Our Hove Park person this month is a new minister who has recently moved into the area from London and is now presiding over the Goldstone Church. Read about him on page 7. Add to that the usual old photo of the area, another historical article by Tony Pelling, the ongoing health article and photography articles and we hope we have produced an interesting and useful local publication for you. That said of course please do let us know what else you would like to see published and we will work to get it included. Have a great November!!! HOVE PARK Local resident Tony Pelling with stories from Goldstone Bottom...
TALES OF GOLDSTONE BOTTOM... NICE ONE, MA’AM! I love this photo of our “new park”, taken during its construction and before it had even been properly named. I love it because it stimulates my imagination and sets me wondering. On the far left we can see the pumping station (now the Engineerium) and I suppose that must be the Droveway that crosses the middle of the picture and cuts the park in two. That was considered a problem at the time as the ancient thoroughfare was still a well-used important route and one suggested solution was to raise the

trackway onto a bridge across the park. Imagine that! Cost prevented it (of course) and eventually the advent of the horseless carriage led to the creation of other routes leaving the old way as a mere historic reminder absorbed within the park. In July 1850 the body of 61-year-old Sarah Line was found in Chalky Pond at Goldstone Bottom. I wonder where that pond was. Maybe it was in the dim distance, where the trains chuff now. That corner always seems wettest to me. I wonder too if the foreground track could be the one where Charles Western, a previous owner of the land, met his death in July 1771 when his family carriage overturned. His wife was uninjured and his son Charles was saved by being tossed into a small bush. Another wonder! Could it be that our picture contains the site for the pigeon shooting competition in 1853 to which four lads were travelling when they discovered the half hidden body of a young girl under a hedge near the Long Barn of Farmer Rigden? The child was later identified as 5-year-old Caroline Sherwood, the illegitimate daughter of her 22-year-old mother of the same name. Amid great local interest the inquest lasted two days during which Miss Sherwood was retained overnight in the Town Hall where she tried to strangle herself with a shoelace. The verdict of the Coroner was “wilful murder” and at the subsequent trial of the mother, great emphasis was placed by the prosecution on the fact that there was documentary evidence that Caroline had been intending to emigrate to Australia where one of her brothers lived, and that she had regarded her daughter as an impediment to that intention. Caroline Sherwood was found guilty of her daughter’s murder and the date for her execution at Lewes was set as 9th August 1853. Just six days before that date Queen Victoria reprieved her and instead ordered that she should be transported to…………wait for it……….. AUSTRALIA. Nice one, ma’am! Did the monarch who, famously, was “not amused” see the irony and….….? I wonder! Tony Pelling

LOCAL PERSON... NEW MINISTER AT GOLDSTONE CHURCH Simon James-Morse of Holmes Avenue has recently begun his new role as Minister of Goldstone Church, based at Goldstone Primary School. When did you join Goldstone Church? My wife, Ruth, and I moved to Hove from Streatham in South London on 1st September. Our first service at Goldstone Church was my Commissioning Service on Sunday 6th September, with Rev Phil Moon, the vicar of Bishop Hannington Church, conducting the act of commissioning. This was a wonderful service with so many of our friends and family from London, Plymouth and South Wales at the service, who joined the congregation of more local visitors and church regulars. A packed church! Have you worked as a minister before? Before coming to Hove, I was an Associate Minister at a small church and an active lay-preacher at a larger church in South London. Prior to this, our family were full-time missionaries for 7 years in Tanzania and Kenya, and fully involved in working with and supporting the

local indigenous churches. However, Goldstone Church is my first time as the fully designated Minister. Is it difficult not having your own building? Not having our own building is both a challenge and an opportunity. The challenge is that Goldstone Church is not immediately visible, there is no obvious meeting place and we must be intentional about setting up the hall at Goldstone Primary School. However, a big positive is that we can be based within the community that we serve – although our congregation comes from Hove, Brighton, Shoreham, Peacehaven and beyond. Goldstone Church is living proof that church is not about the building – church is about the people. Tell us your first impressions of Hove... Our first impressions of Hove is that it is a friendly and welcoming community. Even a simple ‘good morning’ when walking the dog is refreshingly answered with genuine warmth. Thank you! How can people find out more about Goldstone Church? The Goldstone Church website, at www.goldstonechurch.org.uk, provides more information about the church, including details about our ministry to the deaf community, what we believe, latest news of upcoming events and services and contact details. But the best way to find out about Goldstone Church is to visit us in person. We are a friendly and caring church, meeting every Sunday at 10:30am to find out more about God. We look forward to greeting you!

ome and see our local, independent hearing aid expert, Mr Paul Mckay RHAD MSHAA, who has over 20 years of experience helping people to hear better. He answers some of the most frequently asked questions about hearing loss and invites you to come and have a free, no obligation hearing test.
To hear or not to hear? Q: What should I do if I think I have a hearing loss? A: Recognising that you may have a hearing loss and deciding to take action is the first important step to better hearing. Don’t suffer in silence! By taking this step, you’ll learn about the variety of things that can be done to address it. At Hove Hearing, our experienced
They provide comprehensive clinical and counselling expertise. During a hearing evaluation, your audiologist will conduct a number of tests to determine whether you have a hearing loss and, crucially, if hearing instruments are right for you or not. Q: I don’t want people to notice I’m wearing a hearing aid. How discreet are they? A: Hearing aid technology has improved dramatically in the last few years. Our fantastic new hearing aids are really small. They fit discreetly behind and inside the ear and are virtually invisible when worn. This tiny device automatically adjusts to different environments and includes clarity enhancing features to ensure you enjoy all the great things life has to offer. With the latest hearing aid technology, conversations with friends, an evening out in your favourite restaurant or a night in front of the TV can once again be enjoyed to the full.
report Nov 2014 states:

Q: Can I trial a hearing aid with no upfront cost before deciding to buy it? A: Yes! The last thing you want to do is commit to something when you’re still at the ‘exploratory’ stage. We make it our mission to ensure the hearing aids you choose are right for you. That’s why we let you take them home and try them out in real-life situations before deciding to keep or return them. You decide what works best for you - before making any financial commitment. We also have the latest diagnostic equipment available, including a soundproof booth, speech mapping, real ear measurements and a video otoscope which allows you to see the inside of your ear. Introducing the next ‘healthy living’ article written by local personal trainer and nutrition adviser Mary Henderson...
HEALTHY LIVING: THE BIGGER PICTURE So we’re constantly getting swung back and forth between health messages in the media. Or perhaps it feels more like a barrage of scare-mongering making us feel confused about what’s the right or wrong thing to eat. We either a) run around feeling like headless chickens following the latest advice or b) switch off and say, “Hey, if they keep changing their minds, do they really know what they’re talking about and, besides, I can’t keep up.” Health and food is always going to grab headlines; it’s such a personal, pleasurable and essential part of our lives. Remember the media’s always going to sensationalise and try to cobble together a black and white dumbed-down statement to win readers. A new slant on an old bit of information doesn’t suddenly negate things that have long held true. Too much or too little of anything is not good. Sugar was never the good guy and saturated fat hasn’t suddenly emerged the hero. Sugar was just an additive to sweeten the unpalatable low-fat/fat-free diet which emerged as the latest product to launch at fat-fearing consumers. We’re simply eating more sugar than we ever have before. Nutrition is a new science and there are many exciting
The Eatwell Plate from Public Health England
discoveries which will improve our understanding of things old and new. A balanced diet, freshly prepared with a variety of wholesome ingredients, is the enduring principle. What we lack is time to cook, time to eat and time to make up our own minds.

You can use this to simplify the composition or to position objects to make the most pleasing arrangement.
In the woodland scene above, what caught my eye was the arrangement of the four trees I’ve marked in red. However, I didn’t like the light-coloured and very obvious tree stump on the left, and the confused arrange-

I knew that how these lined up depended on my position relative to them, so I moved different distances from side to side, observing the effect on the relationships of these objects. Looking at the mass of tree trunks on the right, just six steps produced a great simplification.
The new position has not only hidden the unwanted tree stump, but also two of the trunks, and made it appear that the third is part of the tree on the right. The resulting simplification concentrates the attention on the parts I wanted to emphasise. HOVE PARK Update from the Friends of The Three Cornered Copse...
CLEARING PATHWAYS IN THE THREE CORNERED COPSE
As the weather starts to change, our work days in Three Cornered Copse become a little less predictable, but fortunately we always seem to escape the more extreme conditions. On the last work day we spent time clearing some of the pathways through the densest part of the woods, where the shrubs and bushes, burdened by the summer foliage, have bent low over the paths and threaten the passer-by with thorns and burrs, as the brambles sprawl across the low canopy. Some of these pathways have followed the same route for years through the copse, and others are relatively new. There is only one registered bridleway through the area, known as the top path, which skirts the edge of the woods along the eastern boundary of the gardens of the houses on Woodland Avenue. There is evidence of some hard core surface in places, and one of our older members recalls that horses from the local riding school used to pass along this path to the top of the Downs, for the daily hack. Other paths have evolved as walkers have found their way between the trees and worn a route, perhaps following an animal trail. Each year they evolve, become wider, or cut off a muddy corner.
We also cut away the vegetation threatening to engulf the benches and seats, and restore the view they should see. Incidentally, there is now a clear view of the i360 from the top of the copse, as it starts to climb above the city profile. We have taken down one of the old signs that labelled the copse at the bottom end of the area, which helpfully listed all the bye-laws that applied to these council-owned areas. And of course it was Hove Borough Council when it was erected. The sign was supported by a rotten frame and rusty steel, not the most attractive of woodland furniture, and was removed for renovation. Finally, as we are all aware, the supermarkets now have to charge for single use carrier bags. I was reminded of the first day we spent litter picking in Three Cornered Copse, several years ago now. On the lane from the Goldstone Crescent roundabout I remember collecting around 50 plastic bags, which had blown into the shrubs which line the path, in the first 100 yards. Let’s hope the new rule will mean we find less of these now. Most of them were from the Co-op! More information on the Friends of Three Cornered Copse at our Facebook page. Simon Baxendale

HOVE PARK Here is a great chance to win a great festive night out for your family...
WIN TICKETS FOR JACK AND THE BEANSTALK Music Theatre 2000 and Showtime Productions are proud to bring to the Windmill Theatre a traditional musical pantomime for all the family to enjoy. Packed full of toe-tapping tunes, amazing dance routines, hilarious comedy and fantastic audience participation – this is a show that’s simply not to be missed! Down on their luck, Jack and his mum can barely afford the rent – to make matters worse, the whole town is being terrorised by the evil giant. When Jack is tricked into selling the family cow for a handful of magic beans – and returns home to the furious Dame Trott – their madcap adventure at the top of the beanstalk begins. Will Jack slay the Giant? Will he rescue the girl of his dreams? There’s only one way to find out and that’s to join us on the adventure this Christmas! The show is directed by Nathan Potter and Simon Gray, and features a full company of actors, singers and dancers accompanied by a five-piece band. Jack and the Beanstalk is supporting the Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice - the only children’s hospice in Sussex caring for children and young people with life-shortening illness. It costs over £3 million per year to provide these services. The hospice receives less than 8% of that figure from central government funding, so without the support of the community to raise the balance there would be serious funding issues. There are 10 performances from Monday 22nd December 2015 to Saturday 2nd January 2016 and you can get tickets at www.jackandthebeanstalkbton.com or call the box office on 01273 565130. Tickets cost from £12.50 to £20. Venue: The Windmill Theatre, Nevill Avenue, Hove
