HOVE PARK
WELCOME TO HOVE PARK LIVING OCTOBER 2014!! We are delighted to report a fantastic response to our first edition of Hove Park Living that you received on your doormats last month! Thank you for all your great feedback! We have also been contacted by various local community groups and are really pleased to be featuring some of them this month. The Friends of Hove Park are on page 5 and they will be giving regular updates in the magazine in the upcoming months and years. The Friends of the Three Cornered Copse are again featured on page 19 and they now have a monthly slot in the publication to keep you all informed of what is going on in their group and how you can get involved. We were also contacted by a resident who had some interesting photos of the Park directly after the Great Storm of 1987, so we also feature those on pages 14 and 15. If you have any ideas or would like to write something for next month, or you may even have questions about advertising, then please get in touch. Have a great Octowber and we look forward to hearing from you.... The Hove Park Living Team info@hoveparkliving.co.uk Cover Photo: Kindly sent in to us by local resident Stephen Batey. HOVE PARK If you are involved in a locally based group that you would like to see featured please email info@hoveparkliving.co.uk
THE FRIENDS OF HOVE PARK During its eventful history many changes have helped shape the much loved Hove Park of today. Following Hove Corporation’s purchase in 1899 of 40 acres in Goldstone Bottom to create a public park, over 7,000 trees and shrubs were planted and sports facilities, such as tennis courts and bowling greens, constructed. The southern section was opened on 24th May 1906 and the northern part a few years later. The park was originally more enclosed, with the imposing brick gate posts on the Old Shoreham Road containing iron gates and flanked by iron railings, and the Goldstone Crescent boundary marked by a wooden fence. Hove Park has now received the national Green Flag Award for 10 successive years in recognition of its beautifully maintained state and excellent facilities.
The First World War saw the park used for military drills and some of the land ploughed up and planted with crops. In 1987 the park landscape was devastated during the night of 16/17 October when around two-thirds of the trees, including many mature elms, were toppled in the ferocious Great Storm. This desolation however afforded a unique opportunity for restructuring with a greater variety of trees planted, vistas improved, and the playground moved to a sunnier, more open location.
Perhaps surprisingly it lacked a friends group and so ‘The Friends of Hove Park’ was formed last year. We aim to assist in the preservation, protection and improvement of the park for the community, working with other bodies involved with the park. We also want to encourage park users to become involved through the organisation of a programme of communal events. Membership is open to all those interested in the park, with a nominal £3 yearly subscription per household. Our first public event was an Easter egg trail which proved very popular. To support wildlife a wildflower mound has been planted with local species and a butterfly-shaped flower bed with colourful, pollinatorfriendly plants. A gardening group has also been formed with twice-monthly sessions helping the park gardeners. We would welcome more volunteers to further develop our work. Information about activities and events can be found on the group’s website http://www.friendsofhovepark.org. which provides links to other sites for further information about the park and its history. You can see many photographs of the park and its events on the website and on our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/ lovehovepark Our AGM is open to all and will be at 7pm on Tuesday 7th October in the former Bowls Pavilion (next to Hove Park Cafe). Please come along if you want to be involved in what happens in the park.

Introducing the next ‘healthy living’ article written by local personal trainer and nutrition adviser Mary Henderson...
“MUMMY, I DON’T LIKE VEGETABLES!” “EAT THEM UP, DARLING. THEY’LL SAVE YOUR LIFE.” We all know people who don’t like vegetables. Would they make a fuss about eating them if, every time they saw them, they thought it would reduce their risk of early death? We’re always hearing about our five-aday, so why do so many people still struggle to achieve it, never mind the recently suggested seven-a-day? For every extra portion of fruit and veg you eat, the lower the risk of certain cancers and chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease. Fruit and veg are great sources of anti-oxidants which protect us against the damaging effects of free radicals. Free radicals cause the process that contributes towards these chronic diseases. “How on earth do I get seven fruit and veg into my diet?” Seven fruit juices a day won’t work. It only counts as one because of the sugar and the lack of fibre. So what might your seven-a-day look like? A handful of blueberries on your porridge and a smoothie at breakfast, an apple mid-morning, veg soup or a salad with lunch and two portions of veg at dinner. Even if you’re

THE GREAT STORM - HOVE PARK 1987 Thank you to local Hove park resident Stephen Batey who contacted us with these great photos of the park after the Great Storm that took place on 16th October 1987 - 27 years ago!
The large hole formed by the uprooted rootball makes a novel play area!
This shows the junction of Goldstone Crescent and Woodland Drive and shows that Goldstone Crescent was impassable on the morning after the storm.
A new park bench?
JCB operating in Goldstone Crescent. Very little pavement can be seen on the park side of the road.
With the sawdust on the road making it look like a dirt track, Goldstone Crescent looks more like a 19th century village street than a 1930s suburb.

THE THREE CORNERED COPSE Clearing the weeds from around the silver birch trees
The Three Cornered Copse is a triangle of partly wooded downland that separates the residential streets, Woodland Drive and Woodland Avenue. It steadily climbs the northern slope of the Goldstone Valley, forming a woodland corridor from Hove Park to the South Downs National Park. The Friends of the Three Cornered Copse meet together regularly to keep it beautiful. On Saturday 28 June 2014 was the first of our summer work sessions. Sadly we had to spend a lot of time clearing the mass of very large weeds which had sprung up around the silver birches. This is the area we cleared a couple of months ago and where we scattered the Meadow Mix which was supposed to give us a lovely display of grasses and wild flowers. It seems that removing the turf and clearing ground just made the conditions ideal for the weeds which were dormant in the ground - we still hope that some of the wild flowers may survive and come up next spring. The work session was followed by our usual summer BBQ and picnic. We were really lucky with the weather

and we had a lovely warm, dry day and were able to enjoy our lunch in the copse. On 19 July 2014, more work was done on clearing the Meadow Mix site, along with clearing the top path used by cyclists, which had become very overgrown. At our next work days we plan to carry out some repair work on the long flight of steps from the top path to the middle path. If you would like to join our friendly team, please do come along to our next work days on 20th Sept 2014 and 22nd Nov 2014 from 10.00am until 1.00pm. (We always meet at the bench near the silver birch trees at the bottom of the green slope.) Knowledge of woodland, plants, wild flowers and grasses is not necessary; just come along and join in the fun. We hope to see you soon. Q. What is this?
Q. What are these celebrities talking about? What helped Ryan Giggs extend his football playing career until 40 and got the world’s media talking about Pippa Middleton’s derriere?
A. Pilates is a type of exercise that focuses on stretching and strengthening the whole body to improve balance, muscle-strength, flexibility and posture. It was created in the early 1900s and incorporates elements of yoga, martial arts and Western forms of exercise.
A. Pilates!
Q. Is pilates just favoured by celebrities? A. Not at all. It has been used for over 100 years to help people with a limited range of movement due to sports injuries, conditions such as arthritis or disabilities and various aches and pains. Q. Real men pump iron, don't they? Slow stretches – too boring? A. The founder of pilates was Joseph Pilates, a boxer, acrobat and gymnast. When he opened his first studio in New York all his clients were male. Numerous men have realised the benefits of pilates: New Zealand All Blacks, Premier League footballers, the England cricket team, athletes who integrate pilates into their training programmes. The core muscles targeted by pilates can help alleviate back problems and develop a flat stomach - top of many a man's health and fitness wish list. Q. Can pilates help me lose weight? A. Pilates will not specifically help you lose weight. However, feeling more confident about your body, improving muscle tone and posture can make you look as though you have lost weight and give you the confidence to take up other specific weight-reducing exercises. Q. Am I too old for pilates? A. No. Pilates is suitable for people of all ages. It’s never too late to start. With older adults, it is best to focus on balance, posture, co-ordination and breathing.
