HOVE PARK Another historical offering from local resident, Tony Pelling...
TALES OF GOLDSTONE BOTTOM... COPSE AND ROBBERS One of the less obvious delights of our valley is the Three Cornered Copse (TCC) where the Friends of TCC work hard to keep this beautiful and fascinating area of Goldstone Bottom in good order. Sadly they do occasionally have to report that fly-tippers have thoughtlessly donated to the rest of us goods we would far rather not have. By contrast there are those who take from us things we would really like to keep and it may be that TCC has in the past provided the cover that smugglers needed to distribute their ill-gotten gains. Today we denigrate smugglers who rob the exchequer to the detriment of those of us who pay taxes but in the 18th and early 19th centuries times were so hard that many were involved in smuggling, not least the good citizens of Hove. Early on Sunday 10th October 1819 the Revenue cutter “The Hound” chased, overhauled and boarded a suspected smuggling craft off Hove. Whilst the revenue men were securing their haul of 225 tuns of gin, 52 tuns of brandy and a bale of tobacco, the nine smugglers escaped by leaping into the “Hound’s” galley and rowing casually away. Two were temporarily recaptured by

shore based officers but half the village came to their rescue and all nine drifted away to escape justice. In addition to such helpful inhabitants the small fishing village of Hove was also ideal for the smugglers because at high tide the sea came up close to the malthouse where their contraband could be temporarily stored. Hastily hidden beneath a layer of malt, the booty was later moved to their more secure hiding place in Goldstone Bottom near the junction of our present Old Shoreham Road and Sackville Road. Here they had a double cave in an old chalk pit, the first cave giving access to the second through a well concealed tunnel. When smuggling was at its height the villages of Hove and Preston were “ecclesiastically conjoined” having but one vicar between them. On approaching his Hove church one Sunday this worthy accosted the sexton to ask why the bell was not being rung. “Because sir, this is a Preston Sunday,” came the reply. Adamant that he was not mistaken the vicar ordered that the bell be rung and the church opened up. They argued back and forth each holding his ground until at length the sexton announced, “But sir, you cannot preach here today for the church is full of tuns and the pulpit full of tea.” What happened next is not reported but it would not surprise me if the reverend gentleman knew full well that it was a Preston week and could later be seen hastening thereto on his trusty steed with a bottle or two of brandy hidden beneath his vestments. Nod nod, wink wink! Tony Pelling

DESIGNING NEW INFORMAT The more observant visitor to Three Cornered Copse will notice that, some months before, the aging sign erected by “The Borough of Hove” many years ago has been removed from the lower entrance. • Wills, Probate, Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA), Deputyships • Family Law (Divorce, Dissolution, Pre-Nups, Financial disputes, Children matters) • Residential Conveyancing and Commercial Conveyancing, shop & lease sales • Personal injury - all forms of accident claims • Defending DWP Benefit Fraud investigations, Interviews under caution & Prosecutions • Criminal and Road Traffic Defence advice • Civil litigation / Debt recovery

The notice carried about 3,000 words informing the reader of the rules and regulations when using the park, and others around the borough, to ensure a safe and lawful experience of the town’s green spaces. Today we’d be a little sceptical of an information board instructing us on how to use a park. Our views have changed, and today’s park information boards inform about ecology, wildlife, species of butterfly and birds, and perhaps a drawing showing us how to recognise a badger. Our colleagues in other groups - Green Ridge, for example - have had such a board for several years, carefully designed to educate, inform and entertain. And without doubt, they work. The board says that Green Ridge is a beautiful place with a diverse ecosystem, cared for and used by a dedicated group of people, and serves to enhance the experience of the casual visitor.

TION BOARDS FOR THREE CORNERED COPSE Each of us has an agreed view on what it should say, and also how it should be represented. Thankfully we have help from a local artist, Jamie Eke, to design the actual layout, colour scheme and appearance. Jamie is a graduate of Brighton University and Hove Park School, and has worked on a diverse set of projects, from designs for the Brighton Fringe to a South Downs bus. With these local credentials, Jamie is more than qualified for our project. (Look at cargocollective.com for more of Jamie’s work.) The first board shows the layout and boundaries of the copse with several items highlighted, explaining the background to some of these. For example, the Coronation Stone, installed in 1953 for the Queen’s ascension to the throne, and the subsequent renovation work. In our city we are blessed with the James Gray collection of photographs held by the Regency Society, which has many early photographs of the copse before the suburb

surrounded this patch of woodland. These will be useful to show the changes through the years. The copse, of course, was decimated by the storm of 1987, and this event is also remembered. We move slowly, so look out for the boards appearing later in the year, not only an information board, but a genuine ”Jamie Eke Design”.

HOVE PARK Introducing the next ‘healthy living’ article written by local personal trainer and nutrition adviser Mary Henderson...
HEALTHY LIVING... PRIDE AND PREJUDICE As hard as we try, so many of our actions and thoughts are heavily swayed by our feelings and instincts. Contrary to the phrase, there are times you shouldn’t trust your instincts. The setting for this story is the nation’s battle against obesity. Each of us views this tale through our own frame of reference, i.e. our own norm which we derive from our weight status, from those in our community, and, dare we forget, the media. I’d like to draw our attention to two characters lurking in the shadows: Pride and Prejudice. Pride strangles our attempts at challenging ourselves in fear of humiliation when revealing our vulnerabilities: “I’m weak; “I’m unfit”; “I’ll fail”. Such insecurities make us bury our heads, often in food or the TV. So we proudly declare, “I could do that if I wanted…but I don’t want to!” Prejudice is an equally ugly force at work. It turns people against people, and really we are all in this together. The “fit” might declare the “fat” greedy, lazy individuals and the “fat” call the “fit” selfish, superficial creatures. Giving diet and exercise advice is hard enough as it is without this miscalling. Healthy weight status is not a superficial issue. The greatest motivator should be a better quality of life,
robust health to withstand the stresses and strains of life, and a lower risk of lifestyle diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. For this we need honesty with ourselves and kindness all round.

The man behind the cover shots. From Stephen Batey, the tenth in a series of articles about photography...
THE DEVIL IS IN THE DETAIL Or, if not exactly the devil, something that looks like a grotesque figure. This photo is of the cut end of a tree branch in Hove Park just inside the railings near Hove Park Road. It’s easy to simply walk along this path, perhaps on the way to the cafÊ, without looking at the smaller picture presented in the details of things around us and miss potentially interesting photographic subjects.
We can sometimes pay so much attention to the bigger picture that we fail to notice the details - failing to see the trees for the wood (rather than the more common version of the expression). Sometimes a frequently seen object can make a striking abstract image. This photograph was taken in Hove Park, but you may find it hard to guess what the subject was or exactly where it was taken.
In an earlier article I wrote about watching out for small details that can mar the final effect and which should be left out of our photographs. This time, I'm drawing attention to the small overlooked details that perhaps should be included in our photographs. If you keep your eyes open, there are also humorous images to be made - where else but in Hove Park could you share a rubbish bin with Ming the Merciless!

HOVE PARK This advice comes from the Beating Bowel Cancer charity...
LET’S LIFT THE TABOO ON BOWEL CANCER TO SAVE LIVES Bowel cancer is the fourth most common cancer but the second biggest cancer killer. Around 110 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer every day, but the good news is it can be successfully treated in over 90% of cases if caught early. The current high mortality rate is due to the high proportion of patients who are not diagnosed until the later stages of the disease when it is much harder to treat successfully. Most people are very surprised to hear how common bowel cancer is, as it is talked about much less than other common cancers, mainly due to the embarrassment many of us feel when talking about anything to do with bums and poo. In order to improve early diagnosis rates we need to get everybody talking about the disease. What can we do to reduce our own risk? Bowel Screening Bowel screening tests are posted to everyone registered with a GP once they reach 60. The test is done over the course of a few days at home and is a quick and effective way of detecting any blood in your stools which could be a sign of cancer. It also detects polyps, which are non-
cancerous growths, but can develop into cancer over time. The test is quick and simple to do. It’s important to put aside a few minutes to do it even if you feel healthy. Know the symptoms • Beating Bowel Cancer advises people to go to the GP if they have any of the following symptoms for three weeks or more: • A change in bowel habit • Bleeding from the bottom or blood in your bowel motions • Pain in your abdomen • Lump in your abdomen • Unexplained tiredness, dizziness or breathlessness • Unexplained weight loss Reduce the risk factors There is no known cause for bowel cancer. However a number of factors increase your risk: • Age • Family history of bowel cancer • High intake of saturated fats, red meat and particularly processed meat • Inactivity, lack of exercise and being overweight • Smoking • Drinking alcohol regularly • If you have diabetes, ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease • The inherited conditions FAP and HNPCC For more information, visit the Beating Bowel Cancer website at www.beatingbowelcancer.org. If you have any concerns, you can have a confidential chat with a Helpline nurse on 020 8973 0011 or email nurse@beatingbowelcancer.org.

In fact he was so at ease he deviated from the text to take the audience into his confidence and share a little aside. I remember him joining Windmill Young Actors and arriving late to the first workshop, leaving me a pound coin on the desk, and he was suspicious, surly and very much in the background. Now he is one of the group’s leaders, he welcomes the new people and no comedy performance would be complete without him at the helm. This is one of many stories I have had the joy of witnessing whilst directing young people in theatre. At Windmill Young Actors everyone is welcome, regardless of experience, confidence or money. (We offer discounted rates and bursaries.) It is for people who are passionate about theatre and want to improve, it is also for people who want to increase their confidence and make new friends. We work towards public performances with the older actors and smaller performances for the younger ones but it is not only about the shows, it is about the process of making the shows. Everyone’s ideas coming together, young people taking huge brave steps, people supporting each other, parents and siblings sometimes getting involved to make a community which brings a lot of joy and excitement. If you are aged 5-19 years and want to join the company, our classes run termly all over Brighton and Hove, Monday-Saturday, including Blatchington Mill School in Nevill Avenue. There is a special rate for Blatchington Mill students, as we are in partnership with the school. Please contact us for a place: 07932 776114 info@windmillyoungactors.com www.windmillyoungactors.com

The Woods So Wild Saturday 29th October 1pm, St Barnabas Church, 88 Sackville Road Recorder maestro Piers Adams and his companion from the Red Priest quartet, harpsichordist David Wright, take a meander through the crazy world of the early Baroque era, with an emphasis on the wild and the woody! From trilling songbirds to the thrill of the hunt, the programme showcases the extraordinary virtuosity and bizarre flights of fancy which characterise the 17th-century stylus phantasticus - together with a brief visit into the 18th century for a transcription of Vivaldi’s famous Goldfinch Concerto. The Art of Fugue Sunday 6th November 2.30pm, Ralli Hall, 81 Denmark Villas As Bach’s final great work shows, his understanding of reason, ‘science’ and mathematics was profound, even if his religious conviction was equally deep. Bach’s brilliant, exuberant handling of his strikingly original theme shows both his scientific understanding of how notes fit together with mathematical precision, and how the unfolding of the counterpoint can seem entirely natural; as he would no doubt have said, ‘God-given’. Celebrated viol consort Fretwork will introduce and play this ‘unfinished’ work in a new completion. Re-

cent scholarship suggests that Bach deliberately left the final contrapunctus incomplete as a puzzle to be worked out. Richard Boothby of Fretwork will explain just how this has been done, including the use of clues left in Bach’s obituary. Fairest Isle And Foulest Weather Sunday 6th November 7.30pm, All Saints Church, The Drive Music from The Tempest by Matthew Locke and King Arthur by Henry Purcell - the BREMF Singers and Players. A specially auditioned line-up of new generation soloists tops the bill in a concert of English Baroque music on the theme of our somewhat tempestuous climate. Springtime For The Pian’ E Forte Sunday 13th November 2.30pm, Ralli Hall, 81 Denmark Villas In a return visit by the celebrated piano trio, Trio Goya, music by Haydn, Beethoven and Diabelli will chart the evolution and development of the fortepiano, its innovative construction reaching a moment of perfection in the late 1790s. HOVE PARK A new exhibition at Brighton Museum...
EXPERIMENTAL MOTION: THE ART OF FILM INNOVATION A new display at Brighton Museum & Art Gallery will tell the story of experimental film-making in Brighton & Hove, from 1896 to the present day. Unknown to many, both Brighton and Hove have played a rich and important part in international film history. Early film-making pioneers include George Albert Smith and James Williamson, who became known as the Brighton School and worked here at the turn of the 20th century, while modern and contemporary filmmakers and moving image artists - like Jeff Keen, Ben Wheatley and Ben Rivers - have cemented the city’s status as a hotbed of experimental film. Experimental Motion: the art of film innovation will explore Brighton & Hove’s success as a place for experimental film-making, and its significance nationally and internationally. Suzie Plumb, Royal Pavilion & Museums (RPM)’s Curator of Film, Media and Toys, said: “Over the past 120 years this city has seen highly influential work produced by its filmmakers. These experimental films have moved the language of cinema and art forward internationally, yet the story is little known. Through looking at filmmaking techniques, such as editing, visual trickery and illusion, Experimental Motion will highlight the impact of these films

on the development of the moving image. We’ll exhibit objects from as long ago as 1896 from the city’s extensive Film & Media collections, alongside films by the Brighton School, work by modern and contemporary filmmakers and objects and work by moving image artists.” Highlights of Experimental Motion will include: • Rare objects from the history of film-making in Brighton & Hove, such as ground-breaking cameras made in the city. • Film by key avant-garde director Jeff Keen (19232012), who was based in Brighton and began to make an impact with Dada-influenced work in the 1950s. • A digital exploration of work by feature filmmakers such as Brighton resident Ben Wheatley, who experiment with editing technique, equipment and simultaneous multi-platform release. • Work by Ben Rivers, a leading contemporary artistfilmmaker who co-founded the Brighton Cinematheque in 1996 - examples of whose work have recently been acquired by the city with assistance from the Contemporary Art Society. Experimental Motion: the art of film innovation Sat 22 Oct 2016 to Sun 4 June 2017 Spotlight Gallery, Brighton Museum & Art Gallery, Royal Pavilion Gardens.
