HOVE PARK

WELCOME TO THE OCTOBER EDITION OF HOVE PARK LIVING Welcome to our October Hove Park Living edition and we hope you are there and haven’t been washed away by all the rain in September! A lot of people hate this time of year - the temperatures drop and the days get shorter but personally I find there is something rather cosy about it. All your nice woolly jumpers start appearing from Summer hibernation and home feels that bit more inviting and warm not to mention the colours of the trees in the Park - the autumnal browns and yellows of the leaves can be quite breathtaking in their beauty. So there is much to appreciate in October!! The heading from Summer to Winter takes a leap forward towards the end of this month when Daylight Saving Time ends on Sunday 25th October. Don’t forget to change your clocks Enjoy the colours! The Hove Park Living Directory info@hoveparkliving.co.uk Cover Picture: Stephen Batey. Local photographer and Hove Park resident. HOVE PARK We love to feature local Hove Park people. If you would like to feature please email us at info@hoveparkliving.co.uk...

HOVE PARK PERSON... CHRISTINE THORNTON-CLOUGH Chris Thornton-Clough lives in Hove Park Way and is a volunteer with the Sussex Pet Rescue charitable trust. How long have you lived in the Hove Park area? I have lived in Hove Park Way for over 55 years. My family moved here from Pembroke Crescent and I was born in a nursing home in The Drive a long time ago! In fact my life has been spent in an area about one mile or less from the nursing home…. What do you most like about living here? Hove Park Way is a very friendly neighbourhood where the residents are always looking out for one another and ready with a helping hand if required. To my mind, Hove is a much quieter area and nicer than Brighton which nowadays seems to be more student and young people minded. Is there anything in the area you would like to change? The parking situation is horrendous these days and the road has gone from a quiet place to one where you have to almost fight to get anywhere near your property to park! As the council installed parking zones/meters south of the Old Shoreham Road, the area north of it is now a free-for-all with cars and vans parking for, in some cases, over a year. It is a very narrow road and the whole situation is quite chaotic. I also feel that the introduction of having to phone or text the council in order to use most of the parking meters is quite ridiculous. Obviously it is geared towards the younger population who own smartphones whilst many older people do not have the facility and are reluctant to divulge banking details to an unknown person. Tell us more about Sussex Pet Rescue... I took early retirement from the University of Sussex about 18 years ago and quickly became a volunteer for

the Sussex Pet Rescue Charitable Trust. I have always loved being with animals and so to spend a lot of my time assessing and re-homing dogs could not have been better. I am now a trustee of the charity. (My other interest is gardening and I was the Chairman of the West Hove & District Horticultural Society (now Hove Gardening Club) for about 12 years. I retired from the Chair in 2014 and was re-elected as President of the club.) How can people find out more? At Sussex Pet Rescue we are always in desperate need of “foster homes” for the dogs waiting to find new loving and permanent homes. We do not use kennels as we can more accurately assess the animals in a normal home environment to see what each one requires. For further information, please ring me on 01273 553735 where I will be happy to discuss “fostering” with you.

HOVE PARK Local resident Tony Pelling with stories from Goldstone Bottom...

TALES OF GOLDSTONE BOTTOM... AN AMATEUR SLEUTH, FORSOOTH Phoebe Smith was born in March 1713 at Stepney, London. Though a self-professed “bit of a tomboy”, at the age of 15 she fell deeply in love with a young soldier boy, Samuel Golding, whose regiment was destined for the West Indies. Determined not to be separated from her sweetheart, Phoebe dressed as a man and enlisted in the 5th Regiment of Foot shortly to be despatched to the same destination. For the next 18 years she served as a soldier without her true identity being discovered. In 1745 she received a bayonet wound to her arm at the battle of Fontenoy and within the year Samuel too was injured and invalided back to England. Then, and only then, did Phoebe tell the story of her deception to the lady of her General. Back in England she nursed her Sam back to health and then remained happily married to him for the next 20 years. Sadly, though they had nine children, only one son survived infancy. After a period of widowhood Phoebe settled in Brighton and married William Hassell (or Hessel). Whilst this marriage spanned many years, for much of the time the couple were impoverished and after William’s death Phoebe was assisted by a few local inhabitants to purchase a donkey which she used to visit surrounding villages to sell fish and other goods. At other times she could be seen on the corner of Marine Parade and Old Steine selling gingerbread and apples from a basket. As her health began to fail she became unable to support herself and spent some time in the poor-house. By the second decade of the nineteenth century she was celebrated as the oldest inhabitant of the town and as such she was granted a pension of half a guinea a week by the “munificence” of King George IV as her gravestone attests. It is said that the king offered a guinea a week but she responded that half that amount was enough for her. A year before her death she rode in the leading carriage at the town’s celebration of the king’s coronation.

This remarkable lady died in December 1821 aged 108 and her grave has pride of place in the St Nicholas churchyard overlooking the town she had made her home. Such was her celebrity that, to their great credit, even the regiment she had duped claimed her as their own with her picture proudly displayed in their mess. Amateur sleuth? Oh, yes indeed, for she it was who solved the mystery of the 1792 mail robbery which led to the conviction and hanging of the robbers at the scene of their crime in Goldstone Bottom. Introducing the next ‘healthy living’ article written by local personal trainer and nutrition adviser Mary Henderson...

ADDED SUGAR – WHAT’S THE BIG DEAL? So why do we care about sugar? As long as you’re not fat, right? OK, getting fat is just half of the story. A thin or slim person can still be in poor health and at risk of diabetes or heart disease. Think diabetes isn’t serious? Think again. I realise that many people don’t really appreciate what diabetes is and so was this apparent on Jamie Oliver’s programme, Sugar Rush, on Channel 4 last month. There are 7,000 amputations in the UK a year as a result of diabetes. Firstly it’s important for everyone to manage their blood sugar levels, especially kids whose bodies are developing. Here’s a random food diary to give you an idea of how easy it is for us all to exceed our recommended daily added sugar intake (as an adult, 6-7 tsp a day). I’ve thrown in a few common culprits to highlight hidden sugars – such as drinks.

HOVE PARK The man behind the cover shots. From Stephen Batey, the first in a series of articles about photography...

THE CAMERA NEVER LIES? In these days of Photoshop manipulation, many still believe that an unedited photograph truthfully records the scene. However, a completely false impression can be created just by the choice of camera position and lens. we can estimate distance fairly well based on the clues supplied by our binocular vision. We also have our experience to help us; for example, we know that a person is smaller than a house, and if a photograph shows someone larger than a house in the background, we know it is just an illusion. But what happens when we look at a two dimensional image, with objects which give little clue as to their relative sizes? Here, the camera can be used to trick us into seeing a false reality as illustrated by this photograph of Patcham windmill showing a large lake in the foreground. If you’ve been there, you may not have noticed the lake - with good reason: there isn’t one! It’s been “created” by the photographer. As seen when approaching, it looks like this: The further away something is, the smaller it looks, and the nearer it is, the larger it looks. In the real world,

For the first photograph, I was very close indeed to the dew pond; I achieved a very low viewpoint by lying on the ground with the camera as close as possible to the water. To include the whole scene in the frame, I needed to use a wide angle lens. For the second, photographed from further away and on higher ground, I held the camera at head height and used a long focal length lens. This photograph shows the pond and windmill in something closer to their real comparative sizes. The lesson is that the camera position has a large influence on how the subject appears in a photograph; by careful choice of position and lens, we can exert a great deal of control even when we can’t alter the subject inherently. If you would like to learn more about Guide Dogs or get involved with the charity this is for you...

GUIDE DOGS WEEK 3rd-11th OCTOBER I have to admit to being a little ashamed of the fact that I didn’t know that if a Guide Dog owner has his dog’s harness down on its back, he or she could possibly be waiting for someone to come up and help them; I never knew that a white and red striped cane meant the person is both deaf and blind; I didn’t know that, however adorable those Guide Dogs are, you must never pet them when in harness because they are working and could be distracted. My guess is that while we can all empathise with how awful it is to be without sight, few of us really know how to go about helping those who are visually impaired and therefore reliant on a white cane or a Guide Dog. Yet the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association is almost entirely reliant on members of the public stepping up to the plate for they are a charitable enterprise receiving no government money; and the membership consists largely of volunteers. Hence it is volunteers who house the puppies for a year, who board the dogs once their training starts, who join local branches to raise funds,

and who befriend blind people through the My Guide scheme. In some cases, as with Brighton and Hove buses, who tirelessly support the Brighton and Hove Guide Dog branch, staff attend My Guide training just so they are more aware of the needs of some of their customers. The Chairman of the local branch of Guide Dogs is Graham Oulton, owner of a particularly bouncy labradorretriever cross called Bassey. ‘Guide dog owners like myself,’ he says, ‘do what we can through speaking engagements and fundraising as a way of giving back to the organisation. Guide dogs don’t suit everyone; you have to be active, for a start, because the dogs need to get out. But if you are the right sort of person a dog is everything, they give you back your independence.’ I’m hoping that I and many other members of the public are going to learn more during Guide Dogs week which will run from 3rd-11th October. If you see a group in blue T-shirts with a bucket outside the Theatre Royal, do donate. Concerned about your home being sold to fund your future care fees? The Issue

You probably own your home as joint tenants if you are a couple and solely if you are single. For couples this means you own it wholly, jointly and severally. Ultimately therefore you do not own it 50:50 as you might have assumed. You actually own all of it together and when one partner dies the surviving partner owns it solely and absolutely. It is sole and absolute ownership that enables a whole property to be taken into consideration as an asset by the local authority and puts the property in danger of needing to be sold to fund care.

The Reality Today

The care Act 2014 introduced in April 2015 allows local authorities to assess your assets to determine if you need to pay for your own care under the new charges and assessment of resources regulations. Currently if you have assets above £23,250, you are on your own and require care, you will probably have to pay for it all - currently averaging around £1,000 per week. Savings, cash and income would be used first and then your property would need to be taken into consideration. You would be expected to pay for all of your care until such time as your assets were depleted to below the £23,250 threshold. You would then pay for a proportion of your care until your assets were below £14,250 - at which point all your future care would be paid for after any relevant income was taken into account.

The Solution

For couples, simply by changing the way you own your property well in advance of any care considerations i.e. from joint tenants to tenants in common and by setting up two property Trusts either immediately or within a properly structured Will at the same time will in most cases, protect the integrity of your home should you ever require care in the future, so long as avoiding care fees was not a primary motivating reason behind the implementation fo the strategy - i.e. you should be looking to protect your half of your property should your spouse remarry after your death, or you should be looking to ensure that your children would not lose 50% of their inheritance should they be made bankrupt or divorce or for example you should be looking to prevent a generational inheritance tax burden in the future. These are all sound reasons for implementing this strategy which in themselves are not deliberate deprivation of assets, but the implemantation of which protects the integrity of the property.

17

For sole owners the process is simply to set up a Trust now and convey your property into it which will produce the same result again this must be well in advance of any care considerations and the motivation must not solely be for the purpose of preventing your home being used to fund your care.

The Reasoning

When you own your home as tenants in common you actually own half each. With our Post death Property Protection Package when the first partner dies, they leave their half into their Trust. The surviving partner is the Trustee of that Trust and also the Primary Beneficiary which means that as they own half and are Trustee of the other half they have complete control over the property and what happens to it. The children and/or whoever else is also nominated as ultimate Trust Beneficiaries will have access to that half of the property when the surviving partner dies. The first half of the property then is 100% securely in Trust for the beneficiaries and will not be at risk. As a result of this simple strategy and because it is not possible to sell just the survivor’s half of the property, the integrity of the property is protected. While the ‘’market value” of half a property is negligible, The Care Act 2014 guidelines do allow for this half to have a charge placed on it under a deferred payment arrangement for care fees which is why this package includes a Lasting Power of Attorney grant for Property and Financial affairs which will enable a pre-appointed Attorney to act on behalf of the survivor should they be unable to themselves and negotiate with the Local Authority for the property to be rented out and a percentage of the income given to the Local Authority instead of a charge being placed. The second half of the property would then ultimately go into the Trust for access by the nominated beneficiaries when the surviving partner eventually dies. With our Whole of Life and Post Death Complete Property and Family Protection Package both halves of the property are conveyed into Trust IMMEDIATELY. This means the whole property is protected straight away and not just after the first party dies. The benefits of this package are that it then protects the property even if both parties go into care before the death of either. It also means that if the survivor goes into care the property does not have to be rented but if it is 100% of the income goes directly into the Trusts for the benefit of the survivor or any of the other Trust Beneficiaries and does not have to be given to the Local Authority. The most important benefit of this package though is the property can be sold at any time and the resulting proceeds be fully protected for the whole family within the Trusts and no negotiation with the Local Authority is required. Sole owners and couples who have immediately conveyed their properties into Trust well in advance of any care consideration and not solely for the purpose of preventing their home being used to fund their care (deliberate deprivation of assets) secures the integrity of the property (so long as entry into care is not within 6 months of setting up the strategy) as the property is not absolutely owned by an individual anymore and it is not legal to force a Trustee to do something that is not in the ultimate best interest of the Trust Beneficiaries. Call us now on 01273 911142 for a friendly chat about which package would be of best benefit to you and your family.

Update from the Friends of The Three Cornered Copse...

BERRIES AND BIRDS IN THE THREE CORNERED COPSE Keats called it the “Season of mist and mellow fruitfulness”, when he wrote about autumn. In Three Cornered Copse, it’s definitely here. The hedgerows, shrubs and bushes are bursting with fruit. Each day the blackberries, elderberries, and sloe berries are harvested by walkers with Tupperware, plastic bags and large pockets, foraging the fruit to take home to enjoy the September produce in a pie or crumble (or gin). The bright greens of spring and summer have faded to the deep dullness of early fall, and the early leaves are starting to tinge bronze as the cooler nights begin to take hold. It’s not only the berries and fruit. The strange toadstools and fungi start to appear, particularly magic as the fairy rings emerge, overnight, betraying the decaying roots of a previous tree network. It’s a time of great change, particularly for our winged summer visitors, who pause to gorge themselves at these feeding stations before crossing the Channel and hurtling across Western Europe to their winter homes.

Colin Brooks is a local bird watcher who walks the copse regularly, and amazes us with his statistics of the bird diversity which passes through our small park. He scored the following on a walk on 11th September: Here is the tally for a 35-minute walk down through 3CC from the top this morning (0810-0845). It was a largely clear night (and in those conditions migrants are more likely to fly straight over). List (in no order, I’m afraid!): Great tit 6 Wren 7 Robin 19 they are singing forcefully now as they establish winter territories Carrion crow 4 Woodpigeon 17 Magpie 3 Jay 2 they are more apparent in the autumn and winter Herring gull 1 on a nearby rooftop Blue tit 5 Stock dove 2 Blackbird 2 they are still hiding away as they moult Jackdaw 1 Chaffinch 1 Great spotted woodpecker 1 Greenfinch 1 Song thrush 1 Chiffchaff 2 Spotted flycatcher 1 at TQ28610784 - this is a good spot! We are very grateful to Colin for his skill in spotting the rarer of this batch, for some days it seems only woodpigeons are around; it’s enchanting to know that there is a richer diversity to appreciate. The Friends of 3CC have the Autumn Work Day on 7 November, all welcome. Meet at the bottom of the green slope in front of the silver birches at 10am.

HALF TERM EVENTS AT THE BOOTH MUSEUM

The skeleton of a dodo

If you’re looking for something to do at half term, there are several events on at the Booth Museum opposite Dyke Road Park, which will appeal to anyone who enjoys natural history. Tuesday 27th October: Jaws ‘n’ Claws Live mini beast handling with Phil and his amazing menagerie, including snakes, lizards and giant bugs. There are three sessions: 10.30-11.30am, 1.30-2.30pm and 3-4pm. You can buy tickets from the Events Booking line on 03000 290902 (Mon-Fri) or in person. Wednesday 28th October: Future Taxidermists Join professional taxidermist Jazmine Miles-Long at this special workshop for children (8-15 years) looking at the art of taxidermy. The workshop will give children an idea of how to stuff an animal skin and allow them to build their own mannequin to take away. Please note: there will be a brief demonstration of taxidermy, showing how the skinning process is carried out, but attendees will not be participating in this aspect. The workshop runs from 10am to 12 noon. You can buy tickets from the Events Booking line on 03000 290902 (Mon-Fri) or in person. Please book early, as an event may be cancelled if too few tickets have been sold.

Friday 30th October: Discover Skeletons! This is a drop-in discovery day for all ages looking at the skeletal collections of the Booth Museum. Bring in your finds and learn about preparing skeletons, reconstructing fossil animals and the mechanics of skeletons. There are two drop-in sessions on the day: 10.30-11.45am and 1.30-4pm. Admission is free. A first come, first served policy will be in operation. To find out more about the Booth Museum and other events taking place there, visit: http://brightonmuseums.org.uk/booth/ or email: visitor.services@brighton-hove.gov.uk if you have any queries.

If you like reading or think you should be reading more why not get involved with City Reads...

CITY READS (BRIGHTON & HOVE) CELEBRATES BEING THE LONGEST RUNNING BIG READ IN THE UK Celebrating ten years of shared reading, City Reads 2015 (Brighton and Hove) is the UK’s longest running big read. This year’s chosen book is Matt Haig’s The Humans, an accessible, funny and inventive book that asks what it means to be human. People have already started reading the book and the events programme runs between 10 October – 1 November. The concept of City Reads is simple: selecting one book for the whole community to read and discuss in a series of special events. Author Matt Haig said: “I am overjoyed to have The Humans chosen as this year’s City Reads title. I originally wrote the book as a kind of advert for the human race, and I wanted it to be a story that as many people as possible could enjoy.” Matt has recently moved to Brighton so he will be around for quite a few of the events. Highlights include: a film strand, book quiz, food and drink events, book and poetry readings, and of course Matt Haig in Conversation (The Old Market, 1 November, 5pm £8/£6).

Do you enjoy singing? Are you aged 9 - 13?

A brand new choir is starting called the

ORPHEUS

Artistic Director Sarah Hutchings explains why the book was chosen for this year’s read: “As soon as I read the book, I knew we’d found our 2015 title. It made me laugh, it made me cry, it was a book I wanted to share with family, friends and acquaintances, so choosing it for Brighton & Hove’s annual big read seemed like the perfect way to do that. Read THE HUMANS and be part of City Reads 2015. I hope you love it as much as I do…” The Humans by Matt Haig is published in paperback by Canongate Books and is available to borrow from your local library. HOVE PARK It’s in the news daily and a very emotive topic. Can you help...?

COUNCIL SEEKS LANDLORDS FOR SYRIAN REFUGEES Brighton & Hove City Council is seeking landlords with properties to rent and is co-ordinating offers of help for refugees from Syria. Earlier this year, the council agreed to accept a small number of households under the Syrian Vulnerable Persons Relocation Scheme, which brings vulnerable Syrians straight to the UK from the countries bordering Syria. The Home Office provides funding to help the refugees to integrate for the first year. No families have as yet arrived and the council is currently working on plans to receive and support those refugees. This scheme operates on the basis that affordable and sustainable accommodation is found for the refugees in the private rented sector. They will be entitled to seek work and claim benefits. Landlords who are interested in offering properties for rent, that are within benefit levels, are encouraged to contact the council on: refugeehelp@brighton-hove.gov.uk.
