HOVE PARK Another historical offering from local resident, Tony Pelling...

TALES OF GOLDSTONE BOTTOM... BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WALKERS For many centuries Hove Drove was the inland route from the small coastal village of Hove to the farming settlement of West Blatchington and thence via the Droveway, east to Preston on the coach route to London and west to the much larger village of Portslade. buttresses nor hear it for the noise of the trains. The council sympathised and swung into immediate action by sending the petition on to the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway Company (nice try, council!!). Despite the impetus given by the tragic death of five-year-old George Harper knocked down by a cyclist as he tried to cross the road by the bridge, the accompanying 1927 photo is evidence that it took 19 years of plan and counter plan, proposal and counter proposal, as well as arguments as to who should And then, in the 1840s, came the railway which, to my mind, marked the bear the cost of the work, before southern edge of Goldstone Bottom and separated it from the narrow a replacement bridge actually coastal plain in which central Hove sits. The original small station for the materialised. In the meantime the area was called “Cliftonville” but as Brighton and Hove expanded it was cost of the work had rocketed from extended westwards beyond the footbridge to form the present much larger £900 to £11,250. station. Reflecting the controversy of the time as to where the boundary between the two towns lay, the new station was first called “West Brighton” The traffic census taken at the bridge on 28th August 1911 recorded before “Hove” eventually won the day. 634 horse-drawn vehicles, 70 When the bridge carrying the railway over Hove Drove was built, the motor vehicles, 215 hand carts and road, since renamed Sackville Road, was little more than a single coach 600 bicycles. In addition 4,570 width track and, whilst some allowance was made for a significant pedestrians risked life and limb to increase in traffic, nothing like the explosion which ensued was pass under the bridge and so on envisaged. that day in the south west corner By 1908 the bridge had become a busy bottleneck with new motorised of Goldstone Bottom we truly had a vehicles mixing with horse-drawn goods carts still in the era of skid pans for “bridge over troubled walkers”. Cue brakes. Such was the concern locally that resident George Cooke organised for a song!!! a petition signed by 183 pedestrian users of the bridge complaining of the danger, as they could neither see approaching traffic because of the bridge Tony Pelling

HOVE PARK Look out for a Snowdog near you...

SNOWDOGS BY THE SEA HIT STREETS OF HOVE Snowdogs by the Sea, an extraordinary public art trail, will hit the city streets for nine weeks in September (24 September - 27 November). The magical sculpture trail will feature around 46 giant Snowdogs, inspired by the much-loved animated short film, The Snowman™ and The Snowdog, based on the book by Raymond Briggs. Each Snowdog will be individually decorated by different artists and generously sponsored by local businesses. The giant Snowdogs will be joined by a pack of Snowdog puppy sculptures designed by local schoolchildren. Locations will include Hove Park, Hove Lagoon, Hove Museum and Hove Promenade. The trail is being organised by the Martlets Hospice in conjunction with Wild in Art, following in the footsteps of similar projects run by Wild in Art in other cities, such as Gromit Unleashed in Bristol. At the end of the event each Snowdog will be auctioned to raise funds for the hospice. Snowdogs by the Sea is expected to attract tens of thousands of visitors to Brighton and Hove in the autumn. Imelda Glackin, Martlets Hospice CEO, said: “We have been overwhelmed by the support of local businesses, artists, community groups and schools who have all come together to enable us to create this unique trail. What is wonderful about this project is that, as well as

PREMIER WINDOWS

Doors and Conservatories

being a brilliant, free event, which everyone can enjoy, it will also raise vital funds for Martlets so that we can support and care for more people who need hospice care.” Many artists have drawn inspiration for their designs from Brighton & Hove’s history, seafront location and iconic architecture. DJ Norman Cook has commissioned well known street artist Ryca to create his Snowdog at the Big Beach Café, whilst crime author Peter James is likely to have a police-themed Snowdog. Schoolchildren have been busy coming up with their own designs for their snow puppies, which will join the trail and be on show at Brighton Museum, Hove Museum and the Jubilee Library throughout the event. Organisers also hope to run a farewell event in December, bringing all the Snowdogs together for a final extravaganza. There will be a trail map on the website and an app to download. The map will also be available at outlets such as libraries across the city. For more information and to keep up to date with all details of the campaign, visit: www.snowdogsbythesea.co.uk or follow Snowdogs on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram at @SnowdogsBTS #Brightonsnowdogs

HOVE PARK Introducing the next ‘healthy living’ article written by local personal trainer and nutrition adviser Mary Henderson...

HEALTHY LIVING... WHO NEEDS EXPERTS? Expertise has taken a hammering in the press recently and people are increasingly dismissive of it. These are interesting times. The digital revolution continues to dramatically transform every aspect of our lives. We have access to all sorts of information whether we touch a button or not – it’s everywhere! That’s not all bad. Knowledge-holders have power and now that we all have access to knowledge that power differential is changing – which is right, in my view. Why should a privy few dictate to the rest of us who supposedly are dispossessed of knowledge? But what to do when it comes to weighing up an article that says a low-fat diet is good for you with another that says cut the carbs…? I recently got two totally different opinions (to my ears) from different garages. I just shrugged my shoulders and said, “I have no idea about cars so I don’t know who to believe.” I searched online for help to no avail. Eventually I spoke to a trained mechanic with 20 years in the trade who made sense of the situation. With more information, we need more critical thinking. Checking the credibility of sources is tricky but necessary. Health is an emotive subject and journalists sensationalise

health-impacting issues to make headlines which I wish they wouldn’t. When information is simplified and an easy read, don’t be surprised by apparent contradictions or confusions. I have just enough characters to direct you towards reputable sites like the NHS.

12 News from the Friends of Hove Park...

HOVE PARK UPDATE The spring and summer have seen very variable weather but the wet conditions have probably helped the tree whips planted earlier this year. Whilst some have unfortunately died, others are growing well (see examples in photo) and we look forward to seeing them fill out next year. The Friends had another successful litter clearing session in July with bilingual school volunteers and members of the public supported by the park gardeners. The photo shows some of the litter pickers with the bags of rubbish they have collected. We are intending to organise similar events in the future. In the autumn we will be planting 5,000 purple crocuses in the park as part of the Purple4Polio campaign by the Rotary International in Great Britain & Ireland in partnership with the Royal Horticultural Society.

The crippling and potentially fatal disease of polio has been nearly wiped out with 125 polio-endemic countries in 1985 now reduced to just two and only 74 cases occurring last year. However several countries are still at risk of the disease returning so it is vital to raise the funding needed to continue the essential immunisation programmes and make polio the second human disease to be eradicated. It is planned for community groups to plant five million crocus tommasinianus corms countrywide to support the final push to eradicate polio. As well as brightening

local areas it is hoped the spectacular carpets of colour in the late winter/early spring will help in spreading awareness and fundraising. The colour of the crocuses represents the purple dye used during immunisation campaigns to mark the finger of an immunised child to avoid repeat dosing. The date for our crocus planting event hasn’t yet been arranged so if you are interested in taking part look at the park noticeboards or our website (http://www.friendsofhovepark) for further information.

HOVE PARK Join a local food community...

A NEW WAY TO BUY LOCAL FOOD IN HOVE

The Food Assembly, a method of buying and selling food which supports local producers and bypasses supermarkets, is now at The Big Beach Café at Hove Lagoon. The new concept in selling local food directly to local people may replace part of your weekly family shop in a healthier and more community-driven way. Every week Food Assembly customers can order food online from local food producers before picking it up at The Big Beach Café – owned by DJ Norman Cook. By ordering online, food producers know exactly how much to bring so there is no food waste their end. All

the food comes from within the average distance of 28 miles. The Food Assembly is about making a real local food community, with the ease and support of technology to make it happen. Brighton & Hove’s Food Assembly organiser, Sophia Harvey, decided that its vision fitted her view of how we should be eating and buying produce. “Having a local Food Assembly offers us the opportunity to engage with the people producing our food, to really know what we’re eating,” explains Sophia. Dan Stockland, who runs the Big Beach Café, is delighted with this new way of buying local food. A cook to the stars, he’s excited about how it will add to his community. “We really liked the idea of the Food Assembly as it just adds even further to what we are doing with the café’s community. I’m excited to work with local produce and to support our food producers; we’re all about local here,” he says. Weekly shoppers choose from unique local products, such as artisan bread from Infinity Foods Bakery; woodland reared pork from Lancing College Estate; and yummy honey from Brambletye Farm. Not to forget multi award-winning cheese from High Weald Dairy. So what are you waiting for? The Hove Food Assembly online is now open so you can sign up, become a member (for free with no commitment), and fill your basket with fresh food. The market is at the Big Beach Café (10.30am-12.30pm) every Saturday. If you’re a food producer and are interested in joining the Hove Food Assembly or the soon to be launched Brighton Food Assembly (The Open Market, September 2016) we’d love to hear from you. You can contact: brightonhovefoodie@gmail.com. If you’re a venue like the Big Beach Café, or care about local food like Sophia, follow in their footsteps and start your own local food community! HOVE PARK Here is your regular update from the Friends of Three Cornered Copse...

RE-CLAIMING THE VIEW Anyone passing through the copse on 23 July would have seen a half dozen or so of us working hard on the top of the green, at our latest work-day. Supervised by our patient park ranger, Garry, we were attempting to uncover one of the benches that would have had a commanding view of the town, and the seascape beyond. After several years, the only view it has had was a very close thicket of bramble and nettles. The problem with woodlands is that they keep growing. Not just upwards, but outwards. The spring canopy, striving for the direct sunshine, will lean and grow over the open spaces, creating a dense shadow beneath. Within weeks the shadow will allow persistent weeds, nettles, brambles and thistles to colonise the ground beneath, and take over the open space. This dense growth was impassable, and took several hours of clearing to take back the space and expose the trees on the edge of the wood. It transpired that the sensible clothing to wear was not shorts and t-shirts, but work trousers and long sleeves. Nettle stings are slightly annoying when we pick up one or two. But one or two each minute can be almost painful. Nettles release formic acid, which causes

the stinging effect on our skin. Some debate exists as to whether dock leaves can relieve the irritation, but a plentiful supply of dock leaves is very hard to find in the copse, so as a help to those of us suffering on that Saturday, it remained a somewhat academic discussion. The picture shows the view we have restored. However the bench is somewhat the worse for wear. Years of exposure to the weather has left the timbers rotted and loose. (Take care if you choose to rest on this.) Incidentally these benches wouldn’t be installed in today’s parks in our city, since the concrete base, the flagstones, with the wrought iron and bolts, is deemed as distinctly “ungreen”. The price to install such a structure is also rather prohibitive. Much more fashionable these days are the “perch” benches. No concrete or metal, just the woodland stumps and planks grown and replaced by the rangers. This is the time of year we collect our subscriptions for the Friends of Three Cornered Copse. Many thanks to those who have already contributed. Anyone who wishes to pay the £3 per family, or £2 per individual, please contact our membership secretary on email: membership@threecorneredcopse.org.uk

Concerned about your home being sold to fund your future care fees? The Issue

You probably own your home as joint tenants if you are a couple and solely if you are single. For couples this means you own it wholly, jointly and severally. Ultimately therefore you do not own it 50:50 as you might have assumed. You actually own all of it together and when one partner dies the surviving partner owns it solely and absolutely. It is sole and absolute ownership that enables a whole property to be taken into consideration as an asset by the local authority and puts the property in danger of needing to be sold to fund care.

The Reality Today

The care Act 2014 introduced in April 2015 allows local authorities to assess your assets to determine if you need to pay for your own care under the new charges and assessment of resources regulations. Currently if you have assets above £23,250, you are on your own and require care, you will probably have to pay for it all currently averaging around £1,000 per week. Savings, cash and income would be used first and then your property would need to be taken into consideration. You would be expected to pay for all of your care until such time as your assets were depleted to below the £23,250 threshold. You would then pay for a proportion of your care until your assets were below £14,250 - at which point all your future care would be paid for after any relevant income was taken into account.

The Solution

For couples, simply by changing the way you own your property well in advance of any care considerations i.e. from joint tenants to tenants in common and by setting up two property Trusts either immediately or within a properly structured Will at the same time in most cases, protect the integrity of your home should you ever require care in the future, so long as avoiding care fees was not a primary motivating reason behind the implementation of the strategy - i.e. you should be looking to protect your half of your property should your spouse remarry after your death, or you should be looking to ensure that your children would not lose 50% of their inheritance should they be made bankrupt or divorce or for example you should be looking to prevent a generational inheritance tax burden in the future. These are all sound reasons for implementing this strategy which in themselves are not deliberate deprivation of assets, but the implementation of which protects the integrity of the property. For sole owners the process is simply to set up a Trust now and convey your property into it which will produce the same result and again this must be well in advance of any care considerations and the motivation must not solely be for the purpose of preventing your home being used to fund your care.

The Reasoning

When you own your home as tenants in common you actually own half each. With our Post Death Property Protection Package when the first partner dies, they leave their half into their Trust. The surviving partner is the Trustee of that Trust and also the Primary Beneficiary which means that as they own half and are Trustee of the other half they have complete control over the property and what happens to it. The children and/or whoever else is also nominated as ultimate Trust Beneficiaries will have access to that half of the property when the surviving partner dies. The first half of the property then is 100% securely in Trust for the beneficiaries and will not be at risk. As a result of this simple strategy and because it is not possible to sell just the survivor’s half of the property, the integrity of the property is protected. While the ‘’market value” of half a property is negligible, The Care Act 2014 guidelines do allow for this half to have a charge placed on it under a deferred payment arrangement for care fees which is why this package includes a Lasting Power of Attorney grant for Property and Financial affairs which will enable a preappointed Attorney to act on behalf of the survivor should they be unable to themselves and negotiate with the Local Authority for the property to be rented out and a percentage of the income given to the Local Authority instead of a charge being placed. The second half of the property would then ultimately go into the Trust for access by the nominated beneficiaries when the surviving partner eventually dies. With our Whole of Life and Post Death Complete Property and Family Protection Package both halves of the property are conveyed into Trust IMMEDIATELY. This means the whole property is protected straight away and not just after the first party dies. The benefits of this package are that it then protects the property even if both parties go into care before the death of either. It also means that if the survivor goes into care the property does not have to be rented out but if it is, 100% of the income goes directly into the Trusts for the benefit of the survivor or any of the other Trust Beneficiaries and does not have to be given to the Local Authority. The most important benefit of this package though is the property can be sold at any time and the resulting proceeds be fully protected for the whole family within the Trusts and no negotiation with the Local Authority is required. Sole owners and couples who have immediately conveyed their properties into Trust well in advance of any care consideration and not solely for the purpose of preventing their home being used to fund their care (deliberate deprivation of assets) secures the integrity of the property (so long as entry into care is not within 6 months of setting up the strategy) as the property is not absolutely owned by an individual anymore and it is not legal to force a Trustee to do something that is not in the ultimate best interest of the Trust Beneficiaries. Call us now on 01273 911142 for a friendly chat about which package would be of best benefit to you and your family.

HOVE PARK News from a local pre-school...

DOLPHINS JUMP FOR JOY BEFORE PASSING OUT Children at Dolphins Pre-school were recently jumping for joy at their Annual Sports before passing out at a special Graduation Ceremony for those moving on to Reception. Founded in 1960, Dolphins Pre-school has served generations at the pavilion that adjoins Nevill playing fields off Eridge Road (adjacent to Aldrington Primary School). They provide a friendly, stimulating environment that successfully bridges the gap between home and day school. The Dolphins ethos is one of “caring and sharing” and based on the recognition of the “child’s right to play”. Recently judged Outstanding by Ofsted, the inspector declared that, “Combined, the provider, manager and staff are an inspirational team… The staff are extremely skilled and tailor challenging experiences to promote all children’s learning.” Principal Sheila Gavan said, “We believe children flourish in an ordered environment in which they know that high standards are expected and at the same time are free to pursue their play, learning and development without fear of being hurt or hindered by anyone else.” Exciting NEW developments include the launch of a new

website, www.dolphinspre-school.co.uk, and industryleading online learning journal ‘Tapestry’ to further enhance the Dolphins experience and close partnership that exists between staff and parents. Dolphins Pre-school is famed for its large south-facing patio garden adjoining fields, free-flow indoor/outdoor secure environment, live music led by grade 8 staff pianists and music graduate, adult-led/child-initiated play-based activities, structured stimulating curriculum, Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) integration, caring qualified staff including Early Years Professionals (EYPs) and teacher. Parents can now apply online 24/7 via: www.dolphinspre-school.co.uk. Free early years entitlement is available for 2-4 year olds. The last few spaces for 2-5s commencing September 2016 are quickly being filled. Those with children eligible to commence from January 2017 are strongly advised to apply as soon as possible.
