HOVE PARK
WELCOME TO THE FIRST EVER EDITION OF HOVE PARK LIVING!! So here it is...a new monthly publication just for Hove Park! The purpose of this magazine is to connect up local people with other local people and businesses. Our editorial policy is very simple...if it has something to do with Hove Park, one of its residents or something they are involved in, or a local event or activity, then we are very likely to provide free space for you to write about it and hence get inside every household in the Hove Park area. You write the copy and we print and distribute it...simple. Also, it is our aim to offer cost-effective local advertising for local businesses. You may find a few businesses from outside Hove Park advertising with us in these early days whilst the magazine is getting established, but after a while we hope to have a majority of Hove Park companies. If you have any ideas or would like to write something for next month, or you may even have questions about advertising, then please get in touch. Have a great September and we look forward to hearing from you.... The Hove Park Living Team info@hoveparkliving.co.uk

THE THREE CORNERED COPSE
At the northern border between Brighton and Hove, where Dyke Road Avenue meets King George VI Avenue, lies a sliver of green space, providing an exquisite corridor leading from the Hove Park suburbs to the South Downs National Park. The Three Cornered Copse climbs from Goldstone Crescent through natural woodland and a large southfacing lawn to the edge of our city. The copse is heavily
wooded, and diversely populated by birds and tree species, and from the top provides one of the best views across Hove rooftops to the sea beyond. Originally, this area was part of the land belonging to the Marquess of Abergavenny. It was acquired by Hove Council in 1935, when the council borrowed £1,524 for the purchase of what came to be known as The Three Cornered Copse. During World War II, the non-wooded area was turned into a market garden and used for food production. Back in the 1940s and 1950s the copse was regularly used by horse riders making their way from the stables in the Droveway up to Green Ridge and the Downs. In 1953, to commemorate the Queen’s Coronation, a grove of silver birches was planted at the bottom of the grassy slope and a commemorative stone laid by Hove Borough Council. With the help of a council grant, the stone has been recently renovated by a team of volunteers, The Friends of The Three Cornered Copse, who also planted 12 birches, in preparation for the 2012 Diamond Jubilee celebrations. These days Hove’s largest woodland is well loved by dog walkers, cyclists and ramblers. In the winter, when it snows, the steep lawn becomes a magnet for children of all ages on their sledges and snowboards. All year round, the copse is a haven for wildlife. In April 2009 the Friends of the Three Cornered Copse was formally constituted by a group who were concerned about the unofficial tipping and litter accumulation in this precious amenity. The purpose of the group is to promote, enhance and conserve the well-being of The Three Cornered Copse, for all users, and works in close collaboration with the council Park Ranger responsible for The Three Cornered Copse. The group has its own website www.threecorneredcopse.org.uk, which contains more information on activities, and how to join the group. New volunteers especially welcome!

HOVE PARK LAWN TENNIS CLUB Hove Park Lawn Tennis Club was founded in 1957 and the first club meeting was held in the then Hove Rugby Club Pavilion on Friday 11th January that year. From that day the tennis club has grown to its present position of being one of the largest parks tennis clubs in the area with a current membership of over 80 members. Back in 1957 we started with one team in the Brighton Parks League, but we now have six teams which gives many members the chance to play competitive tennis once a week throughout the summer. Hove Park have been Brighton Parks Champions 19 times! Things have changed a lot over the years, from playing in traditional white to more brightly coloured outfits now and of course from white to yellow tennis balls, and our club now plays on the Astro courts instead of the hard courts. We do still have one member who has been at the club since its early days who plays with a wooden racket! One thing that has not changed is that the tennis club likes to keep the tradition of having a competitive and friendly approach to playing tennis in the beautiful surroundings of Hove Park.

I joined the tennis club in 1984 and have been Club Captain for many years, during which time I have seen many local residents and people from further afield spend time at our tennis club. Our season runs for six months from April to September and we meet on the Astro courts each Monday and Friday evening for our club sessions. League matches are played on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evening when we play competitive tennis against the other 10 parks tennis clubs in the area. The membership fee normally is set at £40 (£20 for students and juniors) and that includes all courts fees with tennis balls provided. We also have a club knockout tournament throughout the summer for Men’s and Ladies’ Singles, Men’s, Ladies’ and Mixed Doubles. There is also the opportunity to enter at least two Sunday afternoon ‘American’ doubles tournaments. We have members of all ages and abilities in the tennis club but we welcome new members to come along next spring-time to join us. We do have tennis coaching opportunities for those that want to improve their tennis-playing ability and we have a website - hoveparktennis.co.uk - if you want to see or know more about your local tennis club in Hove Park. HOVE PARK Introducing a monthly ‘healthy living’ article written by local personal trainer and nutrition adviser Mary Henderson...
THE SECRET TO A LONG AND HEALTHY LIFE… This year, I found the answer to a long and healthy life. Surprised…yet unsurprised, I learnt there are just seven principles: “the Alameda-7”: 1. Sleeping 7-8 hours a day. 2. Not smoking. 3. Limiting alcohol intake. 4. Getting regular exercise. 5. Not eating between meals. 6. Eating breakfast. 7. Keeping less than 10% overweight. Is that it? No magic pill? No thousand-pound cosmetic surgical treatment? Easy, right? Well, it’s clearly not that easy, given the rise in obesity, diabetes and Alzheimer’s to name but a few. Today it’s these chronic so-called lifestyle diseases we have to worry about. Why is it so tough to kick our bad habits? The demands of modern life, for a start, and the fact that we won’t see the consequences until 20-30 years down the line. Never fear! There’s a new wave of fresh thinking and positivity sweeping across the nation to combat this seemingly unstoppable juggernaut. Running clubs, cookery classes, green gyms, food
festivals...good old-fashioned community life, in a nutshell. So, don’t panic, get back to basics. Leave the fad diets and costly treatments and take a walk into your neighbourhood to see all that’s on offer. Simples. Mary Henderson is a qualified personal trainer, fitness instructor and Health and Nutrition (BSc) student. For more articles and advice on health, fitness and nutrition, visit her site www.feelgoodfactor.org.uk

HOVE PARK PAST It is hard to imagine that this photograph was taken on what is now Nevill Road. It shows the old narrow lane, which ran from the top of Sackville Road to the hamlet of West Blatchington and thence by Toads Hole Road, to Dyke Road. In this photograph the trap is travelling south but the view is northwards towards the Three-Cornered Copse which is plainly seen on the hill beyond. The position of the trap is about opposite the top entrance to the greyhound stadium car park. On the left are the wheat fields of Court Farm, and the land to the right of the road being part of J.J. Clark’s Goldstone Farm. The photograph is dated 25 July 1892. The road remained in the rural state for another 40 years, and it was not until 1932 that the present wide Nevill Road was constructed.

Dr Westergaard has always made me feel relaxed and at ease during treatment.” Chiropractic is not just for back pain as Mr Miah found out. “I came with shoulder pain. After examining my shoulder I was told I had a partially torn tendon. After just a few sessions the pain began to ease off and I was later referred to the in-clinic rehabilitation team and now I can do so much more with my shoulder without any pain.” Other problems commonly dealt with are headaches, migraine, vertigo, hip and knee wear and tear and muscular problems. HOVE PARK We intend to feature local people each month in Hove Park Living. If you would like to feature drop us a line...
LOCAL PERSON...LUCY SPEARMAN What is your name and where in Hove Park do you live? Lucy Spearman…I live in Woodland Avenue. What is the best thing about living in the area? Too many to name but my top things are: living halfway between the sea and the Downs, and being able to cycle on the Downs, the gorgeous Hove Park, especially parkrun on Saturday mornings, and living in a very friendly community. What would you most like to see improved in the area? Traffic and parking…especially safety for children crossing roads. We understand you run a local fitness group...tell us more. I attend brilliant weekly ballroom and Latin dance lessons with ‘Brighton Dancing’, which led to me teaching ‘FitSteps’. This is a new dance-based exercise class using ballroom and Latin American dance steps. The dances include the Cha cha cha, Waltz, Jive and Quickstep. It’s so much fun you don’t even realise you are exercising and you don’t need a partner, plus the music is lovely. It’s suitable for all ages and fitness levels – come and join in, first class is FREE! Classes are Friday mornings 9.30am10.15am at Hangleton Community Centre, Harmsworth

HOVE PARK Admittedly this is not a Hove Park story but a local Brighton girl in desperate need of support from the wider commnity...
NIAMH’S FUND...PLEASE HELP! Niamh is a brave eight-year-old girl who lives in Preston Park, Brighton. She is a bright, caring little girl who loves animals and dreams of owning a puppy. In January 2012 she was diagnosed with Wilms’ tumour, a rare childhood cancer. Niamh (pronounced ‘Neve’) has undergone major surgery several times, has had radiotherapy and over 70 weeks of chemotherapy. Earlier this year came the devastating news that the cancer had returned. Niamh is now coming to the end of treatment currently available in the UK. Niamh faces the challenges before her with immense courage and a maturity beyond her years. She has amazed everyone with her brave, strong spirit, cheeky sense of humour and sunny smile. The nurses and doctors often remark on how well she copes. Gilli, Niamh’s mum, says, “Niamh accepts all she has gone through with such good grace, but cancer has stolen much of her childhood.” We’ve set up Niamh’s Fund so Niamh can access treatment that isn’t available on the NHS, both in the UK and abroad. We need to raise at least £100,000. Please help with dona-
