HOVE PARK
WELCOME TO THE SEPTEMBER EDITION OF HOVE PARK LIVING Welcome to Hove Park Living and we hope you have enjoyed a great summer in our fantastic local park. It has certainly been a mixed summer weatherwise. I have stood outside my house and measured 102 degrees during that heatwave early in July and I have also headed out for the day in a jacket and with a woolly hat in my pocket just in case as it was so chilly! It has certainly been predictably unpredictable in a truly British way! We have some good local content for you this month. We have an interview with the new headmaster of Hove Park School on page 21. We have a great historical article about the old Goldstone Ground on page 5 as well as all the usual articles. Please send us your articles about local events and activities and we would love to publish them. Have a great September! Local resident Tony Pelling with stories from Goldstone Bottom...
TALES OF GOLDSTONE I do wish our feathered friends would refrain from nibbling at my fruit trees. They left me just nine cherries! To be fair, birds were among the first to inhabit Goldstone Bottom so maybe they feel entitled to nibble. Perhaps too there is a sense of revenge in their nibbling for indeed their forebears and ours were not on the best of terms. Pigeon shooting was rife and larks were lured to their doom for the table with rotating sticks fitted with mirrors. That beautiful bird the wheatear was prized for its excellent taste and our valley was renowned as the place to catch them. They were the shepherds’ perks for, as ground nesting birds, they were easy to trap and sell. Not content with catching and eating them the name we gave them is truly an insult; “wheatear” is a corruption of the Anglo-Saxon hwit eeres or white arse for the white feathers on their rump. How could we? Then again the area in the south west of Goldstone Bottom was occupied in the late 1800s by one of the best market gardens in the country so the birds became very adept at nibbling in the extensive orchards. We

and Orchard Gardens to remind them of their loss. The final indignity came when we introduced that previously unknown species the blue and white striped seagull. Owner of the aforesaid market garden, John Jackson Clark, sowed the seed when he permitted locals to play football in one of his fields. Gradually a “proper” football ground was developed on the site and eventually Brighton & Hove Albion, founded and managed by John Jackson (not the same man - but ain’t that a coincidence), took up occupancy in 1902. The accompanying view of the ground shows the market garden orchards and the distant pumping station. Fast forward to 1976 when the “Eagles” descended and the chant of the Crystal Palace supporters so infuriated the Albion faithful that they responded by chanting “Seagulls” with an emphasised first ‘s’ turning the visitors’ effort into a cheer for the home side. Talk about giving the “Eagles” the bird! Over the years “Magpies”, “Owls”, “Canaries”, “Robins” and “Peacocks” came to do battle with the “Seagulls”. (No prizes for naming the teams.) All in all the birds in our valley have had a rough deal at our hands. At least the blue and white seagulls had the good grace to migrate, settling, eventually, in Falmer. As for me, well, it’s only a small tree and what are a few cherries anyway! Tony Pelling This photograph and many others used in the “Tales of Goldstone Bottom” series can be obtained from “Step Back in Time”, 36 Queen’s Road, Brighton.

HOVE PARK Your monthly update from the Friends of Hove Park...
UPDATE FROM THE FRIENDS OF HOVE PARK At the beginning of August, Riptide Health and Fitness completed their move into the former bowls pavilion. It was a lengthy process to move the equipment in, and I dread to think how long it took arranging it all in the premises!
There is a redesigned and much improved interior; the exterior now has a new, smarter appearance, and the outside grass area is being used for classes. The Hove Park café is often bursting at the seams, so is hoping to extend and take the opportunity to improve

the facilities. It is currently displaying possible plans and there is a book for people to make any comments. The Brighton and Hove Playbus was in Hove Park for the National Play Day on Wednesday 5th August. Despite some showers, the event was very busy with many children enjoying the varied activities which included some organised sports. There was a very popular mini farm with a donkey, geese, goat and sheep, and the Park Rangers had a wooden toy-making area giving children the opportunity to use some wood working tools under careful supervision. A large covered area housed the PA system and first aid, as well as providing shelter from the showers. A ramp was placed on the basketball court to provide a mini skateboard area. Litter has been a problem over the busy summer period with items scattered throughout the park and also bins full to overflowing, often with heaps of rubbish surrounding them. It is hoped that people can be encouraged not to leave litter, use the recycling points for appropriate items and, if the nearest bin is full, find another bin with space or take their rubbish MB home.

HOVE PARK Introducing the next ‘healthy living’ article written by local personal trainer and nutrition adviser Mary Henderson...
MINDFULNESS “What is this life if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare. No time to stand beneath the boughs And stare as long as sheep or cows.” William H Davies wrote this in 1911 and it still holds true today. If anything we seem to have less time and headspace. All the gadgets that are supposed to simplify our lives can often be more of a distraction and mean we’re online 24/7. Most of us find ways to cope with the stress of the day like coffee, sugar, snacks, alcohol, TV. Of course I’ll point out there’s running, dancing, good diet, but alas, there are moments when these are totally out of reach and unrealistic.
minutes, Take some deep breaths and concentrate on your breathing, Observe what’s going on around you – what’s fact and what your emotions are – just naming them can distance you from them and have a calming effect. Finally Practise: find opportunities in the day to STOP, on waking, during your tea break, or parking up at the supermarket. Many clients who say they eat when stressed, depressed or tired may find this a helpful way to control mindless snacking. Research supports the benefits mindfulness can offer all of us.
Sometimes even trying to schedule these into your week can be a headache in itself. That’s where mindfulness comes into play. Others just refer to it as checking in with yourself, finding time to STOP – Stop what you’re doing for a few

HOVE PARK
HOVE PARK PAST... FURZE COURT, DYKE ROAD AVENUE This photograph showing the extensive area occupied by this house and grounds at 31 Dyke Road Avenue was taken in 1963, just before demolition of the buildings commenced. There is some doubt about the date of this house. It is first mentioned in the 1897 Directories, but at one time it had the old entrance gates of Chain Pier esplanade, removed in 1871, so the house may have dated from about that period. For many years before its removal Dr Barnardo’s Homes occupied it. The estate has since been developed with the smaller detached houses of Chalfont Drive. Thanks to the Regency Society for this image from their photographic archives, The James Gray Collection. HOVE PARK Update from the Friends of The Three Cornered Copse...
MANAGING THE THREE CORNERED COPSE Three Cornered Copse is the only woodland area left in the boundaries of Hove, and for that reason alone is a precious resource. A recent “twitcher” encountered in there told us how important it was for migrating birds. It’s a stopover for those about to fly across the channel, feeding on the berries and insects before setting off, and a first landing for those just arriving in spring. (More on the variety of birds in a future article!) But to preserve it as a woodland it has to be managed, just like all woodlands, or they cease to thrive and flourish, throttled by the weedy undergrowth that would spring up over only a few months. Our park rangers are another scarce resource, and can only spend a fraction of their time thinning out the dead wood, clearing paths, cutting back the brambles and weeds that spread over the clear areas. Our council has found other priorities for their time; fewer rangers, less money and increased duties (eg moving sheep) mean they can no longer devote as much time as we would like to these woodland duties.

On one of our recent work days we thinned and cleared an area either side of the snicket which runs from Woodland Drive to Woodland Avenue, which instantly created a clearer, lighter space for the forest plants. It also looked better. Ideally we would like to keep this going through the copse, as the benefits are easily observed, but there are only so many work days in the calendar and a small team of volunteers. In the early years of the friends, we spent many an hour pulling the plastic collars off struggling saplings which had been planted following the 1987 gale. The collars protected and helped establish the trees, but became a hindrance as they grew, harbouring damp and insects which damaged the bark on the base. Even today you can still see the occasional brown plastic strip, or a black plastic sheet wrapped around the roots in the undergrowth. The copse was an easy dumping ground for the house building that has persisted along its boundaries over the last 70 years. At the periphery of the copse are the occasional fence posts, barbed wire, concrete blocks that we clear, left over from the builders. In our way we try to manage this small area of woodland. If you’d like to join us, please make contact by emailing us at membership@threecorneredcopse.

NEW HEADTEACHER AT HOVE PARK SCHOOL ROB NIEDERMAIER-REED Rob Niedermaier-Reed is the new headteacher at Hove Park School. We found out more about him… Where were you working before? I was the headteacher at Chessington Community College in the Royal Borough of Kingston for six years. Before that, I worked as a deputy headteacher in Lewisham and as an assistant headteacher in Tower Hamlets. Why did you want to come to Hove Park? My previous school had recently had a highly successful Ofsted inspection. This was followed by a visit from the Secretary of State for Education recognising the hard work of everyone - students, parents, colleagues and governors - that had led to the transformation of our school. I loved working at my old school but the time was right to think about the next stage of my career. I saw the advert for Hove Park and it immediately caught my attention. A job in beautiful Hove! I investigated a little further and became more excited. Colleagues and friends knew about Hove Park School and everything they told me was positive. The moment I walked through the door, I liked the atmosphere. The first people I met were friendly and welcoming. During the interview days, I was increasingly impressed with what I saw. Relationships between students and adults were clearly based on respect. Hove Park was evidently an outward looking school committed to serving the local community. The school had made impressive improvements and there was an almost tangible feel of optimism and ambition. I soon realised that I really wanted to work at Hove Park School. Do you plan to make any changes at the school? Through the hard work of our staff, students and parents, Hove Park is already a good school with outstanding
features. We will now become a truly outstanding school. Our school will be characterised by superb teaching and extensive extra-curricular opportunities that guarantee the best possible education for every child. Our children will display the highest standards in their studies, their appearance and their behaviour. Where do you stand on the issue of becoming an academy? I have always worked in local authority maintained schools. Schools should fully engage with and be accountable to their communities. It was immediately obvious to me that Hove Park is an outward-looking school and it is a school that has experienced considerable success as part of the family of maintained schools in Brighton and Hove. Unless government policy determines otherwise then I want us to remain as a community maintained school. What are your interests outside work? I love cycling and I’m really looking forward to exploring Sussex on my bike. I love rugby. I have coached, refereed and (many years ago!) played a little but nowadays I am primarily an obsessive Leicester Tigers fan (and still a season ticket holder who goes to most home games!). I also love film and one of the leaving presents from my old school was a year’s membership of a local Brighton cinema.

HOVE PARK Not far from Hove Park and well worth being aware of...
BRIGHTON OPEN AIR THEATRE A HIDDEN GEM
Brighton’s Open Air Theatre (BOAT), which opened for business this summer and still has a month of entertainment to surprise you, really is a bit of a hidden gem. Tucked away on the old bowling green at Dyke Road Park, it is unseen when you speed past on Dyke Road, and largely unannounced. It’s only when you make your way past the park’s café that you see this wonderful amphitheatre, its ‘turf’ seats an emerald green, the oak sleepers banking upward to catch the sound. The style of theatre-going is very eighteenth century: you bring your wine and picnic and lounge and munch on the grass while the thespians do their thing. Creative Director, the playwright and composer Brian Mitchell, has devised an eclectic programme for this first season that has ranged from Shakespeare to Gilbert and Sullivan, Alice in Wonderland and afternoons of jazz. The idea is to appeal to all age groups and tastes. Still to come is ‘The Secret Garden’ and a Dickens series, ‘Our Mutual Friend’. If this is in any way as good as the three-parter ‘Tragedian’, a sell-out show on the life of the Victorian actor, Edmund Kean, that won top show at the Edinburgh Festival, we can count ourselves lucky to have it on our doorstep.
shown. This is particularly significant as BOAT is the legacy of the writer of ‘Kemble’s Riot’, Adrian Bunting, who died at the age of 47. Adrian was a guiding light in Brighton’s arts scene, and is probably best known as the creator and MC of the legendary Zincbar cabaret. When diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, he put his life savings towards the project and hastily devised a committee of trustees from amongst his friends to oversee the construction of the theatre. To find out the programme, go to wwwbrightonopenairtheatre.co.uk. The tickets are ridiculously cheap, the venue is great, the weather, as we all know, is variable and unpredictable so you have to be prepared. On September 5th the theatre has a fundraiser called ‘Shakespeare in a day’ - it sounds like a riot. See you there! Sheena Vernon is author of ‘‘Messiah. Love, music and malice at a time of Handel.”
In mid-September, the play ‘Kemble’s Riot’ will be

HOVE PARK Here are some local activities coming up in September and beyond...
THE BIG SLEEPOUT 2015 Do you often find yourself taking for granted a warm house at the end of a cold winter’s day, tucking into a hot meal and finally climbing into a comfortable bed? For so many sleeping rough around Brighton & Hove, this is far from their reality. The Big Sleepout 2015, run by Portland Road-based charity Off The Fence, will give a glimpse of what life is like for those without homes and raise the much needed funds to rebuild their lives. Will you join us on Saturday November 14th? The Big Sleepout is another annual Off The Fence fundraising event with a twist! Held in the grounds of Aldrington School, from 7pm to 8am the following day, it is the best way to spread awareness of homelessness, to experience sleeping rough and raise money through sponsorship. There’s also a complimentary breakfast for all participants courtesy of our friends at Crossover Brighton. If you’d like to take part, put up a poster or receive flyers to share, email us at: fundraising@offthefence.org.uk. We believe our services and your support can make the biggest difference to so many lives around our city.
