We offer incredible new versions of food and drink that you might find familiar. We have sodas made in house with some help from our centrifuge machine. They have around one tenth of the sugar of regular sodas. Our cocktails are crafted with loving care using house made essences, bitters and artisanal spirits. Some of our cakes have no added sugar. Some are completely dairy free. We are really proud of our velvety, house made, organic cashew and tiger nut milk blend.

Our coffee has to be tasted to be believed. We only use the best butter, virgin coconut oil (for our many non dairy/vegan creations) and extra virgin olive oil for dressing. Our tea is brewed in clean glass, to the perfect temperature.

HOVE PARK A great annual opportunity to visit new places...

HERITAGE OPEN DAYS 2019 It’s the 25th year of the Heritage Open Days festival - an opportunity to visit some places not ordinarily accessible, and everything is free, although some events must be booked. This year the festival runs for 10 days, from 13th to 22nd September, and the theme is “People Power” in recognition of the 200th anniversary of the Peterloo Massacre. Places open to visit in Hove include St Helen’s Church in Hangleton. St Helen’s is a late Saxon to early Norman church, in existence by 1093 (open Fri 13 Sept 10am-4pm; Sat 14 Sept 10am-4pm; Sun 15 Sept 12-4pm). There will also be a talk on the churchyard by local historian Trevor Povey on Friday 13 September at 7pm in the church. Cricket lovers can get a behind-the-scenes tour of Sussex County Cricket Club on Friday 20 September. Sussex have played at the ground in Eaton Road since 1871, after acquiring the land from the Trustees of the Stanford Estate (pre-booking required). The Regency Town House at 13 Brunswick Square will be hosting various talks, including Hobbits in Hove, on a childhood stay in Hove by JRR Tolkien, and you can visit an impressive restored Victorian house at 33 Palmeira Mansions and the Modernist Embassy Court on Kingsway.

COUNCIL WEED REMOVAL PROGRAMME

SCOOTATHLON ACCOMPANIES TRIATHLON

The council has begun an extensive weed removal programme after pledging to become a pesticide-free city. A team of eight will join existing staff who are already touring the city to remove weeds by hand and with tools as the council reduces the use of toxic herbicide glyphosate and explores new weed control technology. The council has been aware of the amount of weeds in the city, but has waited until the growth has developed before taking steps. A plan is being developed to end the use of the toxic weed killer in all the city’s parks, open spaces, pavements, verges and housing land within three years. Glyphosate, commonly known by its original trade name Roundup, is the world's most widely sold weed killer. But many experts believe it causes cancer in humans while destroying the environment and wildlife. A report will go to the next Environment, Transport and Sustainability committee in October. In the meantime no glyphosate will be used in parks while the impact is monitored and alternative solutions are trialled. This September will see the fourth Brighton & Hove Triathlon on Hove Lawns.

The event now boasts over 1400 entries. Children aged from three to eight years can compete in the Scootathlon – scoot, bike and run - thanks to Race Director John Lunt who is passionate about getting young people active. He said: “Last year we had 140 children aged between 3-8 years of age racing along Hove seafront and the atmosphere was fantastic.” This year’s Scootathlon is on Saturday 14th September at noon. MAKE A STAND... AND YOU DON’T HAVE TO RUN A MARATHON The act of dedicating yourself to months of regularly training deserves much praise. On top of the physical and mental health benefits, the marathon journey brings a new lease of life and new friendships. However, there is another less extreme and more sustainable way of improving your health. What is this magic bullet? Standing up. On average, we spend 12 hours a day sitting down and, if you include time asleep, it totals an astounding 19 hours a day. Going to the gym or walking down to the shops certainly benefits the cardiovascular system; after all you need to raise your heartrate three times a week. It will certainly help add some calorie burn to redress your energy balance. However, research has shown that simply standing for 3-5 extra hours a day better regulates blood glucose. This time on feet burns an extra 50 calories an hour because your heartrate is roughly 10 beats per minute more than when sat down. This is a total energy expenditure of 750 calories over that period. To appreciate the impact this seemingly small increase can have, it’s 30,000 calories a year or 8 pounds of fat or the equivalent to running ten marathons a year.

Consider walking meetings

To boot, prolonged periods of sitting is a common cause of back problems and others arising from resulting weak and tight leg and gluteal muscles. We still have to work so consider walking meetings, standing desks or getting up to speak to a colleague over sending them a short email – that’s more sociable, too. Mary Henderson

PHOTOGRAPHY: CONTROLLING EXPOSURE With film cameras the only exposure controls available are shutter speed and aperture. If light levels change so that you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get the correct exposure with these controls, you have to change the film to suit. The International Standards Organisation (ISO) have a standard for measuring film speeds; films come with an ISO rating such as ISO 100, the same ISO setting on a digital camera gives the equivalent exposure. The extra facility available on digital cameras is the ISO adjustment which controls the effect of light on the sensor; you can change the ISO to cope with different lighting conditions. Some digital cameras go further than this; they allow automatic ISO, which lets you fix both the shutter speed and aperture and still get the correct exposure. A situation where I needed to control both aperture and shutter speed is this photograph of a bee in Hove Park. I wanted a small aperture to get sufficient depth of field for both bee and flower to be in focus but also a high shutter speed to freeze the beeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s motion.

If additionally your camera lets you specify the aperture and the slowest shutter speed that it will use, this can be very useful taken together with auto ISO. For the evening photograph below of West Blatchington windmill I chose the aperture, and relied on the camera to give me a shutter speed that avoided camera shake and auto ISO to provide the correct exposure.

A new feature of some sensors is that they are ISO invariant; after a certain point, there is no need to set higher ISO because you can modify the image file in Photoshop or another raw file editor and achieve the same final result. Underexposing and making the adjustment in post processing has the advantage that you can select in which areas to increase the exposure, and avoid reducing the highlights to featureless white. It is also a venue for conferences, makes a beautiful setting for wedding receptions and functions, has a bar with Sky Sports and free wifi and is also a fantastic restaurant that is open to the public. The purpose of our visit was to check out the restaurant and to let you know what we found and what is available. First thing to mention is the setting…we had a window table overlooking the golf course. Beautiful Sussex scenery made a very welcome and relaxing change to the hustle and bustle of Brighton and Hove. The centre has an extensive free car park and overflow facility, so another refreshing element of the visit was the lack of hassle parking. There is a wide variety of food available to suit all needs, appetites and occasions. In the lounge bar there is an extensive variety of sandwiches, baguettes, light bites and salads. Afternoon teas and cream teas are also available, but it is the restaurant where you will really satisfy your appetite! From the set menu we chose a mushroom soup with crusty baguette. Creamy, tasty and delicious. This was followed by a chicken Caesar salad for myself and beef lasagne for my hungry teenage eating companion. He finished off with a chocolate and orange brownie with vanilla ice-cream whereas I was very content to finish my meal with a cappuccino. The food was of the highest quality and all courses were beautifully presented. Quantities were ample to satisfy the hungriest of appetites and the service of the attentive serving staff was excellent.

Prices are very reasonable for such high quality food, with a two-course meal from the seasonal lunch menu coming in at £11.95 per person and three-courses costing £15.25. The seasonal lunch menu changes every three months and is available from Monday to Saturday with an extensive carvery taking over every Sunday…and it really is every Sunday as Singing Hills restaurant is open 364 days of the year from 7.30am to 4pm – every day except Christmas Day. We left feeling like we had discovered somewhere a bit special and a place we will definitely return to in the near future. Obviously here in Hove we are spoilt for choice in terms of places to eat but Singing Hills offers many elements that are not available in the city and are a bit special. 19 News from the Friends of Three Cornered Copse...

THE BUSY SUMMER COPSE The summer is a quiet time for the Friends of Three Cornered Copse, but not for the copse itself, which does what it does best at this time of year. That is, being used and visited by anyone and everyone. More folks than ever visit the copse in these warmer weeks, whether cycling, walking with dogs, or building camps and dens with the dead wood in the dense woodland. No workdays for us in the summer, but each of us pick up litter and clear footpaths from time to time, to keep it usable and pleasant. (Note: The drink of choice for copse users seems to be Stella Artois these days, particularly by users of the benches at the edge of the green.) A big thank you to all who collect bags of litter as they wander through; it saves time in the autumn when we have the big clear up. Litter collecting is getting very popular these days. The council’s Tidy Up Team of volunteers is well supported and they descend on the spaces and parks in our city from time to time to purge the area of plastics and paper. The tree canopy is still quite dense, but occasionally the strong sunlight pierces through, to show the fading greens of the late summer foliage. The copse is an important food larder for birds and small mammals at this time. The hedges are full of berries and seeds at the moment, and the birds are gorging themselves after the stress of nesting, getting ready for migration and the colder nights and the shorter days. Even now some of the trees are starting to fade to light brown. We are planning our workdays for the autumn; the next one is on 21 September, then 12 October. Our campaign to protect the copse from a proposed development continues; many comments on the planning application help enormously. FREE PSA TEST FOR PROSTATE PROBLEMS The PSA test is a blood test that measures the amount of prostate specific antigen (PSA) in your blood. PSA is a protein produced by normal cells in the prostate and also by prostate cancer cells. It’s normal to have a small amount of PSA in your blood, and the amount rises as you get older and your prostate gets bigger. A raised PSA level may suggest you have a problem with your prostate, but not necessarily cancer.

On Saturday 5th October a contingent of the orchestra will be coming to Bishop Hannington Church for a study day on Mahler Symphony No 1. Andy Jackson, Artistic Director of the orchestra, will use his musical understanding, versatility and vision to guide the orchestra through this wonderful work. NETBALL CLUB IN HOVE IS LOOKING FOR NEW RECRUITS Thousands of women across the UK are discovering a great way to get fit which is fun, friendly and you probably last played at school – netball. With England hosting and doing so well in the recent Netball World Cup it is more popular than ever. Players say it has become ‘the highlight of my week’ and ‘brilliant fun’. Fast-paced and great exercise, netball remains a really good game to play. Although we’re mainly meeting for fun, the competitive element means you push yourself a little bit more. And when you’re concentrating on getting the ball, you forget you’re actually doing exercise. Netball can burn up to 600 calories a session with its fast, explosive sprints and longer jogs, improves upper body strength and flexibility with its quick changes of direction, plus helps hand-to-eye co-ordination.

UK figures reveal it’s one of the fastest growing participation sports for women with more than 156,000 women of all ages, from 25 – 60 years, playing every week across the country. It’s also a great alternative to working out in the gym or jogging. We’re a netball club in Hove originally set up in 2013 by a small group of friends who wanted to try out the traditional school sport again. The group has grown through word of mouth and online marketing, but we are still looking for more players.

We have two fantastic coaches/umpires who take turns to teach us. Each session we meet and do gentle warmups and stretches followed by some ball skill and tactic training. We then play a friendly game with players choosing what position to play and with regular breaks to swap position and have a breather. We’re open to all and operate a drop-in policy. Just turn up and play, £8 per person. We play on Wednesday evenings from 7.30 – 8.30pm on the indoor netball courts at King Alfred Leisure Centre, Kingsway, Hove.
