HOVE PARK Another historical offering from local resident, Tony Pelling...
TALES OF GOLDSTONE BOTTOM... THE BEST JOB IN THE WORLD Water abounds in Goldstone Bottom as the area sits above a natural aquifer formed from a basin in the chalk. The eminent Victorian engineer Thomas Hawksley recognised this and in the mid 1860s recommended the site as likely to satisfy the increasing demands for water from the rapidly expanding urban area. Test drillings confirmed this and in 1866 the wonderfully named Brighton, Hove and Preston Constant Service Water Supply Company (eat your heart out Southern Water!) built the pumping station we now know as the Engineerium. Within 10 years, and after the installation of the enormous Number 2 Beam Engine, the station was capable of pumping 150,000 gallons an hour. A large brass plaque in the engine house lists the dignitaries who were present at the ceremony to start the new engine on 26th October 1876 and at the bottom of the list, the most important man of all, the engineer and superintendent of excavations, John Baker. It was John who had supervised work on the 160 foot deep large oval well and the headings (tunnels) which stretched for a quarter of a mile across the width of the valley. Further headings were added and by 1884 they totalled 2,600 feet which gave a water yield of 5.5 million gallons a day. That well and its tunnels took a lot of digging and it is believed it may have been John Baker who, in his own time, used the large misshapen flints which the men brought to the surface to build a folly. This grotto and series of arches, each tastefully draped with ivy, was loved by the Victorians but in 1990 the ivy was stripped away to reveal the flint as the recent photo shows. In the early 1900s George Mason was employed as the driver of the beam engine and his job was to ensure that the reservoirs were topped up as necessary. Those close at hand were easy but the large underground reservoir in Dyke Road was a bit tricky. Above ground it had a
large graduated white board against which a long floating pole with a black arrow at the top would indicate the water level. All George had to do was to raise his telescope and if the level was low, start his beam engine and watch the arrow rise to the required level as water was pumped up. Great on fine clear days but on misty murky ones George sent a lad on a donkey to view the reading and report back. Just imagine that lad’s life: playing happily in our lovely valley on sunny days and getting paid to take a donkey ride when duty called. What a job! Certainly beats my boyhood paper round. Surely…..the best job in the world. Tony Pelling

BRIGHTON MARATHON
FOCUS, LOOK, LISTEN
This year’s Brighton Marathon takes place on Sunday 17th April, and there will be some road closures. Volunteers are needed to help with a wide variety of roles and you can register at http://www.brightonmarathon.co.uk/volunteer before 10th April.
The road safety mantra for crossing the roads has been “Stop, Look, Listen” – from when we were in primary school.
This year’s official race starter on behalf of the Motor Neurone Disease Association is TV presenter Zoe Ball, a resident of Western Esplanade. She will be at the Mass Start in Preston Park at 9.15am, with the elite runners starting in Withdean Park. Both the men’s and women’s champions from 2015 are returning to the race this year, Duncan Maiyo of Kenya and his compatriot Penninah Wanjiru. If you want to see the end of the race, the first elite runners are expected to finish in Madeira Drive at around 11.25 and you can cheer them on from a grandstand situated directly by the finish line, which will be filled on a first come, first served basis. There will be a charity village on the beach, where charities can greet their runners, with live screens, food, drink, entertainment and, of course, deckchairs! For more information, visit www.brightonmarathon.co.uk.
Failure to look properly is the biggest cause of collisions in the city – for all road users. Modern life gives us many distractions – mobile phones/devices and headphones. However, being human, we are often caught up in our thoughts and emotions when using the roads. Worries on what we have to do – or anger at what has happened in our lives – can mask our full attention from the road. Taking time to be aware of how we are feeling and accepting that – before we get on the roads – can help us focus on the roads when we are using them. Roads remain probably the riskiest environment we use each day – walking/cycling/driving or riding. The new “Focus, Look, Listen” campaign reminds all road users in the city that a clear focus on the roads allows you to look and listen effectively, able to make the best decisions. Join the discussion with stories and factors on the Facebook page: Share the Roads, Brighton & Hove.

HOVE PARK Introducing the next ‘healthy living’ article written by local personal trainer and nutrition adviser Mary Henderson...
HEALTHY LIVING... INFORMED CHOICES: GLUTEN-FREE Gluten-free (GF) is a range of products for coeliac sufferers or those with gluten intolerance which are normally diagnosed by a doctor. The GF market is growing; however, the diagnoses of the conditions are not. So why are people switching to GF fare? Perhaps because of its image as a healthier alternative to conventional gluten-containing foods. For people with these conditions, “Freefrom” ranges have made it possible for them to enjoy everyday favourites such as sandwiches, pasta and pizza. For those trying to be healthier, there are options outside the “Freefrom” aisle. Good sources of wheat and gluten are not unhealthy in themselves and, in many, GF products are substituted with processed ingredients, extra sugar and salt to maintain the food’s qualities and mask the loss of flavour. There are tons of naturally gluten-free products like root vegetables, “gluten-free” grains, meats and pulses. Other consumers who experience gastrointestinal discomfort and choose GF are amongst many in the population who simply have foods that they find hard to digest and therefore avoid. Buying alternatives can serve to introduce a wider variety of nutrients into your diet. Well-made wholemeal bread provides a great source of

Important information on proposed changes to school catchment areas...
COUNCIL TO CONSULT ON SECONDARY SCHOOL CATCHMENT AREAS 110000N
A programme of public engagement on possible ways of changing Brighton & Hove’s secondary school admissions system is under way. The need for change has been triggered by rising demand for secondary school places, and also 525000E 527500E 530000E 532500E 535000E by the University of Brighton’s proposal to create a new secondary free school in the eastern central area of the city.

As of September 2018 the projected rise in the number of secondary age pupils means that in some catchment areas there will be too many pupils for the places available. The proposals being considered relate to community secondary schools and academies, as well as the proposed University of Brighton secondary free school. As faith schools, Cardinal Newman and the King’s School set their own arrangements. 23% Schools, parents and other interested parties are invited to give their views on three different catchment area proposals: Model A: each school to have its own catchment area Model B: the city to have four catchment areas, three with two schools in and one with three schools in Model C: each secondary school being part of a catchment area with three schools in.

Councillors are also looking to see whether they can make more schools more accessible to children from disadvantaged backgrounds. The deputy chair of the council’s Children, Young People and Skills Committee and chair of the council’s cross party school organisation working group is Councillor Daniel Chapman. He said: “We want to engage with people’s views on the general principles of how they think the catchment areas should work. The boundary lines indicated are suggestions at this stage. The feedback we get from this engagement exercise will help us draw up concrete proposals that will be the subject of a formal consultation process in the autumn.” Council officers are hoping to arrange a public information event in Hove in April. You can find out more and give your views via the council website at https://www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/2018-admissions. The closing date for comments is Sunday 24th April.

ANYONE FOR TENNIS? Spring is on the way. The evenings are getting lighter and hopefully the days are warming up. It’s the time of year when Hove Park Tennis Club starts another season of tennis in our beautiful park. ber. Our annual subscription for the six month summer season is £40 for adults and £20 for juniors and those in full-time education. We also have six teams in the Brighton Parks Tennis League, so as well as playing at club sessions there is the chance to play more competitive tennis against the other Brighton Parks Clubs if you wish, on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday evening with matches starting at 6.15pm. Last season Hove Park had a fairly successful time but we would very much like to welcome new members of a reasonable or good club standard to come and join us this summer. We meet every Monday and Friday evening on the astro courts, starting from Monday 28th March at 5pm. We continue to play from 5pm in April and then we start at 6pm from May until August. HOVE PARK Thanks to Rosie Greenaway for checking out the new menu at The Dyke Tavern...
NEW MENU AT THE DYKE TAVERN When Britain’s culinary metamorphosis first began some 25 years ago with the rise of the gastropub, this controversial change ricocheted through local communities, rocking the boat and dividing opinion. Antiquated, male-dominated boozers offering little more than pork scratchings and soggy sandwiches died a very public death, as patterned carpets were replaced with wooden flooring, and unimaginative menus were decimated to make way for ingredients most Brits couldn’t pronounce. Nobody was sure if the movement would last, but today (a quarter-century on) gastropubs continue to stand their ground and positively shape the reputation of pub food; nowhere more so than The Dyke Tavern. Like so many Brighton pubs, The Dyke’s journey has seen it embrace countless phases, but none so well-balanced or inviting as its current incarnation. Craft beers and pleasing eclectic décor aside, it’s the new menu which has locals worshipping at this temple of flavour and flair. Energetic and passionate, Head Chef Neil Parker (affectionately known as Munkee) boasts an impressive resumé of top London kitchens, but these days it’s the

bellies of Brighton and Hove he chooses to cook for; and crikey can this man cook. The menu choices render me embarrassingly inarticulate; wowza and other urban dictionary gems are the most I can muster. I’m served course after course of delicious intrigue, each with impeccable presentation. The fresh fig and tomato tartlet oozes with glazed chevre, while around it dance graceful dashes of basil pesto, striking the balance between hearty and elegant. Opposite me, my companion loses his Venison-carpaccio-virginity, and thanks to the sweet potato and anchovy dauphinoise which accompanies his tender rump lamb, he is still reminiscing days later. My towering jerk-spiced halloumi burger bears none of the hallmarks of a bog-standard veggie burger; at every bite I’m pleasantly surprised with a dash of soy, a hit of ginger or the crunch of pickled tenderstem broccoli and plantain crisps. Interpreting my indecision over dessert as a challenge, Munkee produces the most spectacular assortment of mini desserts, sealing a wonderful meal with snippets of exceptionally tasty sweet creations, many of them gluten free. And my verdict on the new menu? An unwavering yes. The diverse dishes sit somewhere between wellexecuted gastropub-grub and stylish yet accessible fine dining, and flavours that at first seem at odds with each other somehow work miracles for the taste buds - which is, after all, the mark of a truly talented chef. They provide a friendly, happy, stimulating environment that successfully bridges the gap between home and day school. The Dolphins ethos is one of “caring and sharing” and based on the recognition of the “child’s right to play”. The inspector declared that, “Combined, the provider, manager and staff are an inspirational team… The staff are extremely skilled and tailor challenging experiences to promote all children’s learning.” Principal Sheila Gavan said, “We believe children flourish in an ordered environment in which they know that high standards are expected of them and at the same time are free to pursue their play, learning and development without fear of being hurt or hindered by anyone else. We create an environment in which children develop self-discipline and self-esteem in an atmosphere of mutual respect and encouragement.”

Recent exciting developments include the launch of a new website, www.dolphinspre-school.co.uk, and the introduction of industry-leading online learning journal Tapestry to further enhance the Dolphins experience and close partnership that already exists between staff and parents. Dolphins Pre-school is famed for its large south-facing patio garden adjoining fields, free-flow indoor / outdoor secure environment, live music led by grade 8 staff pianists and music graduate, adult-led / child-initiated play-based activities, structured stimulating curriculum, Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) integration, caring qualified staff including an Early Years Professional (EYP) and teacher. Free early years entitlement is available for 2-4 year olds and a few spaces are still currently available for children aged 2-5 with bookings now being accepted for 2016/17. HOVE PARK Local resident Sheena Vernon reports on Brighton Dogwatch...
EXERCISING DOGGY POWER Now that Brighton and Hove City Council have drastically reduced the staffing and functions of their Animal Welfare Department, in the name of cuts, a group of five dog owners has banded together to form a self-help organisation called Brighton Dogwatch. Their purpose is to share information among dog owners and promote responsible dog ownership. They are also lobbying the council to continue prosecuting people whose dogs attack other dogs or who are guilty of animal neglect and cruelty. Brighton Dogwatch is currently a Facebook page and Twitter account; through these media they share information, such as the impending law change on microchips, as well as events and news they think would be useful to the dog community across Sussex. It allows followers to publicise missing or stolen animals, as a result of which several missing dogs, including one stolen while in a bank in Brighton, have been tracked down and returned to their owners. Brighton Dogwatch volunteers were among those who organised a demonstration earlier this year outside the Town Hall against the cutting of animal welfare functions. Impressed by the positivity of the demonstrators, one of whom made an impassioned speech from the floor of the council chamber, dogowner and council leader Warren Morgan opened discussions with Dogwatch. As a result, money has been found to fund a new animal welfare post; when it will be filled and what duties will be assigned to it is still a work in progress.
Holly, who went missing and was found by Brighton Dogwatch
So too is the evolving role of Brighton Dogwatch which at present is in the process of turning itself into a properly constituted group. The council have proposed that they help with organising a fostering network for strays but negotiations depend to an extent on whether the council decides to outsource its responsibilities regarding strays. ‘Everything is in a state of flux,’ says one of the Dogwatch volunteers. ‘I think it may be a few

months before we have a clear idea of the exact list of services the council will offer and what their priorities will be. We will have no role in dog on dog attack investigations, except to refer anyone who complains to our page to the council. At the moment there is nothing, yet we are still receiving stories from distressed owners. Last year,’ she adds, ‘there were 300 animal welfare cases investigated but all this has stopped. That’s a lot of dogs suffering around the town.’ If you want to lend support to their case, please log into their Facebook page. Sheena Vernon

HOVE PARK Here is your regular update from the Friends of Three Cornered Copse...
CLEANING UP THREE CORNERED COPSE The weekend of 5 March began “Clean For The Queen” events around the country, and the Friends of Three Cornered Copse used this motivation to clean the litter from the largest woodland in Hove, after a long winter of use. The weather was cold and grey, but dry, when 12 volunteers and one dog spent the morning wandering the copse with council-supplied “litter picker” tools and a box of black plastic sacks. Some 25 black bags were filled in that time, as we spread around the area and tackled the litter dropped over the past few months. There were the usual crisp packets and sweet wrappers, we found numerous full black “poo-bags” (surely there’s just one person who does this?), bottles, cans, cardboard coffee cups, one car hub-cap and three un-opened bottles of Pinot Grigio. Apart from this, the popular drink of choice in the copse seems to be canned cider. The Park Ranger was on hand to pick up our collection at the end of the morning. Some encouraging news received about our Ranger service, who have escaped some of the severe cuts the council are having to implement. Most of the Ranger team will remain, losing 1.5 heads from the team, rendering them still functional but under-staffed. Well done to all those who lobbied councillors and council meetings recently.

A whiff of spring is in the air as the winter subsides. The official spring start was 1 March which arrived like a lamb, (so will go out like a lion?). Anyway, the cow parsley is sprouting already on the woodland floor and the clumps of snowdrops (planted by the Friends of 3cc in previous seasons) are standing proud around the muddied paths. The daffodils too, which emerged in December, are still decorating the lawn fringes in the top field. Some of these areas have been rather inaccessible as the mud lingers but thankfully the firmer areas are passable for walking and cycling once again. Our thanks goes to all those who took part in the Clean for the Queen event, it really looked like a difference was made at the end and a sanctimonious glow kept us warm as we worked. As we left the copse that afternoon, the skies darkened and the rain came back - we were spared once again from the bad weather. More news on future work days as we move into the warmer seasons on our Facebook page and website. (Just google “three cornered copse”.)

HOVE PARK The man behind the cover shots. From Stephen Batey, the sixth in a series of articles about photography...
PHOTOGRAPHY - FREEZING MOVEMENT The shutter speed needed to freeze motion depends on the speed of the movement, the size of the moving object in the frame (this depends on how far away it is and the focal length of the lens), and the direction of the movement. You can freeze an object moving directly towards you with a shutter speed that wouldn’t have this effect if the object were moving across the frame. Oblique motion would require a speed somewhere between the two. The smaller an object is in the frame, the slower the speed you can use. This can be illustrated using a train, where the front and rear are obviously moving at the same speed, but the amount of blur differs with the smaller (more distant part) being frozen. The left hand shows the whole photo, with the enlargements of nearer and farther parts shown next to it. The nearer part is obviously blurred, whereas the farther part looks sharp - and both were obviously moving at the same speed.
Sometimes, a very short shutter speed is the only way to freeze movement. This cricket ball was stopped in 1/1000th second. An alternative to freezing everything is to pan (swing)
the camera round following the movement. This results in a sharper image of the moving object while giving the impression of speed by blurring the background. This photo shows Brighton Mitre Cycling club in action in Hove Park.

Some sports have a point in the action when the movement is at a minimum, such as a high jumper at the top of the jump, and here you can use a slower shutter speed and still arrest the motion. This article can also be found at https://stephenbatey. wordpress.com/ where the illustrations are larger. Stephen Batey
