Welcome to the October edition of KTR!! So, September was great wasn’t it! Record temperatures and a very welcome extension to Summer! This month however Summer really does start to recede into the past and it all culminates on 30th October with the clocks going back an hour....so mark that one on your calendar.

Rock Inn, Rock Street View of the Rock Inn (now The Mad Hatter Inn) and early motor bus, in 1905. The age of the inn is unknown, but certainly it was in existence as long ago as 1826, though possibly not in this form. CD236 was one of the first four motor buses to run in Brighton and went on the road in May 1903. Motor buses then terminated at the Rock, but horse buses went through Sussex Square to finish at the Bush Inn. Daniel Chapman answers our questions...

Meet Your Local Councillor: Daniel Chapman Daniel is a Labour councillor for Queen’s Park ward. What is your connection to the area? I have many connections with the ward; I grew up with my mother and great-grandmother in Wiltshire House, along Lavender Street, and I attended Queen’s Park Primary School. I am often recognised, as my first job was working on the checkouts in Safeway (now Morrisons) at the bottom of St James’s Street. What is your background? Whilst studying Politics and History at Sussex University I worked part time and helped care for my great-grandmother. I worked for an education charity for three years that linked schools with employers across the country and I currently work for a professional association for teachers. What made you want to become a councillor? My great-grandmother was the secretary for a tenants association and she dedicated much of her time to helping others, with even the smallest of issues. I admired what she did and I’ve always felt that I wanted to do the same and I think being a local councillor is one of the best ways to do this. What are the main issues in the Kemptown area at the moment? I am keen for residents to contact me and to let me know what they think are the big issues in the Kemptown area. But one issue that has been raised with me since I was elected in May last year has been the rubbish and recycling situation in the area. This is one of our top priorities to address this situation and we are working hard on resolving the issue. What are your interests outside politics? Politics seems to take up a lot of my time at the moment but previously I have travelled around Australia and New Zealand and I’d like to visit more countries. I recently ran the Brighton Marathon and I am signed up to take part in next year’s event too, so I’ll be looking to fit marathon training in with my meetings. I occasionally enjoy baking cakes too, so if anyone has a good recipe they’d like to recommend, please let me know.

How can people contact you? There are several ways people can contact me or my fellow councillors Karen and Adrian. People can contact me through my email: Daniel.Chapman@brighton-hove.gov.uk or call me on 01273 291353. You can also see what we’re up to through our Facebook group “Queen’s Park Labour”.

A weekly event from Time to Talk Befriending in partnership with St Mary’s Church...

Tea & Company at St Mary’s Church What is Tea & Company? Tea & Company is a fantastic weekly event which aims to help connect people aged 50+ living in the East Brighton community with each other through the provision of a welcoming, accessible and enjoyable afternoon of befriending, tea, cake and entertainment. Why is Tea & Company needed? Aside from the huge amount of evidence locally and nationally confirming that maintaining friendships and keeping active significantly reduces feelings of chronic loneliness in older age, we know first-hand that this event is what older people in the community really want. We can say this with confidence because during the summer the pilot for Tea & Company was run in a partnership between St Mary’s Church and Time to Talk Befriending. These monthly events brought together 50-60 people aged 50+ for an enjoyable afternoon of companionship, homemade sandwiches, cakes and tea. As a result scheme members from Time

to Talk Befriending met each other for the first time and friendships were made. Furthermore, through the connection with St Mary’s Church, older people were given the chance to contribute towards a heritage reminiscence project by sharing their memories and the experience of living in Brighton & Hove over the past few decades – something many people enjoyed and something the partners also value greatly! Through the provision of volunteer drivers we were able to help people who are usually unable to get out to become more socially included within the community – without which they would never have been able to attend. This fantastic afternoon event will therefore continue to run! In fact it was so popular that they will now run weekly (during term time) instead of monthly! Who is organising Tea & Company? Tea & Company is being made possible through the willingness of Time to Talk Befriending and St Mary’s Church, Kemptown, to work together to help older people to become more socially included. In addition, we have enlisted the support of Brighton College sixth form students who are equally as committed to working in partnership to tackle the serious issue of loneliness and bridge the gap between the generations. When & where is Tea & Company? St Mary’s Church, 61 St James’s Street, Kemptown, BN2 1PR 3.30pm-5.00pm Wednesdays If you would like to find out more please contact St Mary’s Church on 01273 698601.

Our column on local issues from Steve Parry…

Business Improvement District for Kemp Town? We are fortunate to have in Kemp Town and St James’s Street local businesses that ensure the character of our community is maintained and we do not become reliant upon the “one size fits all” approach of national and multinational corporations. Not only is the presence of our local shops of social value, it also benefits our local economy. We must recognise that some of our local businesses do an enormous amount for our community in practical terms; over the summer Legends raised nearly £5,000 and Charles Street £1,000 for the Rainbow Fund. Many businesses from florists to cafés, bars and local shops provide support for local causes. Our area has its own unique atmosphere valued by local residents and visitors. It is of benefit to the city as a whole but, as I have pointed out in the past, our area has been ignored for years by the city council in terms of investment, improvements to the environShare the Roads, Brighton & Hove

42% of collisions in Brighton & Hove occurred because road users were not looking properly

ment, and regeneration generally. If we wait for the council to do anything it will be talk and no action. We are not even included in the City Plan proposals for the period up to 2030. When St James’s Community Action Group (SJCAG) was formed a few years ago we discussed proposals including pedestrianisation and the formation of a “Business Improvement District”. Unfortunately I am unsure if SJCAG still exists and, if it does, it certainly is not an Action Group. I hate to see shops like Cardome, that was run by ‘community legend’ Mike Dalley, empty and derelict for over three years and traffic pollution becoming an even more serious health hazard. Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) are partnerships between local authorities and businesses intended to provide additional services or improvements to a specified area. A BID must be agreed by ballot and is funded in whole or in part by a levy additional to the non-domestic rates. BIDs were piloted in 22 locations during the period 2002 to 2005 with the first ballot in December 2004. There is therefore plenty of evidence of their success including the one covering the city centre here in Brighton. The House of Commons Library published a briefing paper on 12 August which sets out the working of BIDs together with information and statistics. http://www.parliament.uk/commons-library#jumplink-0 The cost of a ballot must be met by the council, unless turnout is under 20%, in which case the proposer may be liable for the cost. If anyone is interested in looking at a BID for Kemp Town and St James’s Street please get in touch via Kemptown Rag or email me at steve.thered2012@gmail.com

Would you like to meet some fellow “sewists”?

Brighton Sewing Bee ‘SEWCIALS’ When I became a mother three years ago, I felt a strong need to start ‘making’ and be creative again. I began taking sewing lessons at The Friends Centre, Brighton, and fell in love with this beautiful craft. I started the Brighton Sewing Bee SEWCIAL events in August 2014 to let the sewing community in Brighton know that there was a dedicated place where sewists could meet up every month to socialise and sew together. Social media has been such an amazing tool in getting the sewing community talking but meeting in person is so much more important and FUN! We meet the first Thursday of each month, 7-9pm, at St George’s Church, Kemptown. It’s £5 for two hours of sewing fun, a slice of homemade cake (gluten-free and vegan options) and tea, and we also have special guests sharing their inspirational sewing stories. Each month I am staggered by the positivity, creativity and support that I see at our meet-ups. Everyone

Our gardening column by William Mills...

Greenfingers - The Search for the Perfect Houseplant Over the last three years I’ve written more than thirty articles for my Greenfingers series published both in the Kemptown Rag and on my own website the-news.co. The main lesson learnt is we must be realistic about what can grow in a confined space in a town beside the sea. Sadly some plants do need a greenhouse or superb rural location with a south facing walled garden. In the news.co we are building an extensive list of plant articles which we are expanding with an honest appreciation of the difficulties encountered in our search for that perfect houseplant. Then every three months we hope to update the readers of the Kemptown Rag with how we are getting on. One of the first problems we encounter with indoor gardening is that nature largely designed plants to live outdoors leading us to two of our biggest concerns -

A succulent plant

temperature and moisture. Exotic, eye-catching plants hail from the Tropics which tend to be both warm and wet. But not always. Cactuses are native to arid, hot and dry deserts. So they would be an ideal choice for a centrally heated home where the owner sometimes forgets to water them. Yet cactuses have drawbacks too. They are prickly. We need to live in long term harmony with our plants and this includes not harming them and vice versa. I prefer succulents for this very reason. They enjoy a similar habitat as cactuses, but without the spikes. The available light is a consideration. In the open desert, plants thrive in twelve hours of unbroken, baking hot sunshine followed by freezing cold nights. As we cannot recreate this in our living rooms it would be fruitful to search for succulents which do well in the shade of giant boulders and don’t experience too much nightly temperature change. Another consideration is growth. If a plant doesn’t grow at all, or so slowly as to not be noticed, interest in its well being can be lost. Therefore a plant which grows rapidly with bright, lush leaves is always an attractive proposition. At the same time we don’t want it growing too large for our home. Therefore the perfect plant needs to be able to not only survive regular pruning but also thrive, enabling us to sculpt our own unique, living masterpiece. So our quest continues… Further information is available at http://www.the-news.co/index.php/gardening/ William Mills

A treat for classical music lovers...

Athanasius Kircher: Music, Science and Natural Magic Friday 28th October, 8pm, St George’s Church, St George’s Road L’Avventura London, with Grace Davidson soprano. Athanasius Kircher was a 17th-century German who used alchemy and mathematics to explain musical phenomena such as the power of birdsong. This programme will illustrate the most memorable chapters from nine books of Kircher’s masterpiece through music by Kircher, Biber, Vivaldi, Rameau and Handel. Neptune’s Song Tuesday 1st November, 8.30pm, SEA LIFE Brighton, Marine Parade Showcasing The Constellation Club in chamber orchestra configuration for the first time, the evening’s nautical voyage embarks with Telemann’s “Water Music” suite. The programme also features two orchestral suites of JS Bach.

Guts and Glory! Friday 11th November, 8pm, St George’s Church, St George s Road Heroic music for strings, trumpets and drums - period instrumental ensemble Spiritato!, led by violinist Kinga Ujszászi. This vibrant programme presents baroque brass at its best. Sound House - Francis Bacon and the Nature of Sound Sunday 13th November, 8pm, St George’s Church, St George s Road Concert by the Society of Strange and Ancient Instruments. 17th-century scientist Francis Bacon was intrigued by seemingly magical sound effects like echoes and sought to explain them through a series of experiments. This programme explores these aural illusions. For more information or to buy tickets for any festival event, visit: www.bremf.org.uk
