We love to find out more about local people...

Kemptown Person – Ali Ghanimi Ali Ghanimi lives in Belle Vue Gardens. In her spare time she runs Free University Brighton which provides and promotes free education accessible to all. How long have you lived in Kemptown? Six years. What do you like about the area? I like Kemptown’s diverse mix of people and it’s generally a relaxed and friendly place to live. But the best thing is living so close to the sea, being able to go for a swim or a sunset walk on the beach is just great. How did you come to set up Free University Brighton? It started as outrage and dismay when the Coalition Government trebled university tuition fees. But I was fed up of going on protests that didn’t seem to change anything and wanted to do something practical that could improve people’s lives. I went to the Occupy London site at St Paul’s Cathedral and

saw their Tent City University. I was inspired by how people were coming together to educate themselves about the world and issues that affected them and thought if that could be done in a tent on a pavement in the middle of London, then why not in all towns and cities on a permanent basis using all kinds of public spaces. Tell us more about the courses you offer... We offer courses, talks, practical workshops and film screenings etc in all kinds of subjects. It could be anything from improving your English to making a film on your smartphone. It depends on what local people offer to teach and what they wish to learn.

Do you want to: Enjoy your garden? Extend your living space to the outside? Maximise and extend the interior space in your home? Live better AND add value? You're almost there! Contact Lewis for building & carpentry solutions for: • • • • •

Last year we started a degree-level course in social science and humanities taught by local volunteer academics. It’s been formally validated and it’s completely free. We’ve just taken on a new group of students who will study a range of subjects including criminology, law, economics, philosophy, history, gender studies and sociology. Anyone can do the course, even if they have no previous qualifications, work full time or have other commitments. What do you do in your spare time? The free university takes up much of my time outside work, but I try to grow a bit of veg up at my allotment (that which the slugs and snails are kind enough to leave me). I love walking and cycling and I read a lot of books. I also like making things out of bits of discarded wood. It exasperates my partner that I rarely pass a skip without having a rummage. If only I had space for a workshop! Find out more about Free University Brighton at freeuniversitybrighton.org.

New council flats opened in Kemptown

A disused communal area at a block of flats in Kemptown has been transformed to create three new council homes, as part of an innovative project by Brighton & Hove City Council. Councillor Anne Meadows, chair of the council’s Housing and New Homes Committee, officially opened the new flats at St James's House in High Street.

The council says that the homes, on the ground floor of St James's House, will provide much needed affordable rented accommodation for people on the city’s housing register. They consist of a one bedroom flat, a two bedroom flat and a three bedroom flat. St James's House, a 1960s high rise councilowned building, already has 120 existing flats. The new flats are the first in a project aiming to convert redundant spaces in council owned properties to provide extra homes – typically on the ground floor of high-rise blocks, such as former caretaker’s rooms or storage areas. They are in addition to new council homes already being provided under the council’s New Homes for Neighbourhoods programme, which is aiming to build at least 500 new council homes by 2020. Cllr Meadows said: “We are being creative in how we can provide more council homes, whether it is by converting part of an existing building, or building new homes on pockets of little-used council land. These new flats are a great example of how an empty space can be given a completely new lease of life. The communal area at St James’s House had fallen into disuse over the years; now it will be home to three households.” Work at St James's House has been carried out by the Mears Group, the council’s partnering contractor. Allen Shaw, Mears Divisional Project Manager, said: “This has been a very exciting and challenging project for us. We were able to convert an old communal space into three habitable flats, making best use of the available space. We are pleased to have been a partner in this project to provide additional homes to meet pressing housing needs in the city.”

Our entertainment column by Paul Thomas...

Autumn Leaves As summer fades and the leaves turn brown the new uni students are heading this way, so it must be autumn or the fall as they call it across the pond. Seasoned watchers will soon spot that “crazy” hair dye is still essential for that first week away from home look. The late late 25 bus service is best avoided as too much cheap alcohol will empty young stomachs all over the seats. Time travel could be a better method of getting about and HG Wells, author of The Time Machine, was born 150 years ago on 21st September 1866. Precisely 25 years before in 1841, the London to Brighton train line was officially opened or rather extended from Haywards Heath. From July of that year the service ventured from Norwood Junction to Haywards Heath which has confused some train enthusiasts with dates. Journeys to Victoria were not possible until 1860. There had been numerous proposals to build a railway to Brighton but it was the London and Brighton Railway company that triumphed after a costly battle via Parliament and

Dame Joan Collins intense opposition from stage coach companies that recognised a major threat to their business. But the train triumphed and brought ever more people to the charms of our fair town as it was then. Whether the anniversary will be celebrated by embattled commuters largely depends upon the removal of leaves on the track, both actual and metaphorical. Travel of a very different nature arose with the first episode of Star Trek on America’s NBC on 8th September 1966. Via different incarnations and films Trek is still with us today and there is another TV series, Star Trek Discovery, available from January 2017. The Monkees first hit TV screens in America on 12th September 1966 enrapturing a generation of Daydream Believers.

Roald Dahl was born 13th September 1916 and gave us travel of the mind via his often dark imaginings as well as flights of fancy in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and his short stories including the Kiss Kiss collection that partly formed the basis of the iconic TV series Tales of the Unexpected. One of the guest stars in Tales was Joan Collins who takes her one woman show to the Theatre Royal this October for one night only. Paul Thomas

Snowdogs by the Sea Hit the Streets of Brighton & Hove (including Kemptown!) Snowdogs by the Sea, an extraordinary public art trail, will hit the city streets for nine weeks in September (24 September - 27 November). The magical sculpture trail will feature around 44 giant Snowdogs, inspired by the much-loved animated short film, The Snowman™ and The Snowdog, based on the book by Raymond Briggs. Each Snowdog will be individually decorated by different artists and generously sponsored by local businesses. The giant Snowdogs will be joined by a pack of Snowdog puppy sculptures designed by local schoolchildren. Locations are likely to include the New Steine Gardens, St George’s Church and St George’s Road. The trail is being organised by the Martlets Hospice in conjunction with Wild in Art, following in the footsteps of similar projects run by Wild in Art in other cities, such as Gromit Unleashed in Bristol. At the end of the event each Snowdog will be auctioned to raise funds for the hospice. Snowdogs by the Sea is expected to attract tens of thousands of visitors to Brighton and Hove in the autumn.

Photo by Simon Dack, Vervate Photography Imelda Glackin, Martlets Hospice CEO, said: “We have been overwhelmed by the support of local businesses, artists, community groups and schools who have all come together to enable us to create this unique trail. What is wonderful about this project is that, as well as being a brilliant, free event, which everyone can enjoy, it will also raise vital funds for Martlets so that we can support and care for more people who need hospice care.” Many artists have drawn inspiration for their designs from Brighton & Hove’s history, seafront location and iconic architecture. DJ Norman Cook has commissioned well known street artist Ryca to create his Snowdog at the Big Beach Café, whilst crime author Peter James is likely to have a police-themed Snowdog. Schoolchildren have been busy coming up with their own designs for their snow puppies, which will join the trail and be on show at Brighton Museum, Hove Museum and the Jubilee Library throughout the event. Organisers also hope to run a farewell event in December, bringing all the Snowdogs together for a final extravaganza. There will be a trail map on the website and an app to download. The map will also be available at outlets such as libraries across the city. For more information and to keep up to date with all details of the campaign, visit www.snowdogsbythesea.co.uk or follow Snowdogs on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram at @SnowdogsBTS #Brightonsnowdogs

We are delighted to feature the latest column from Kemptown Rag regular Catherine Considine...

I Resolve Hey Kemptown! It’s been a while. So much to tell you; so few column inches. So huddle up, sharpen your pencils, flip open a new notepad. Grab a scented eraser if that’s your thing - mine is wonky, strawberry shaped and smells nothing like a strawberry. OK forget the rubber, it’s clearly distracting. Besides, there’s no time for correction. It’s September my friends and time to make some resolutions. Was that the rustle of a page turning? Look, I get it. September is a divisive little month. The back-toschool cadence is etched deep inside us like thick scribbles on a page that even my ancient strawberry rubber can’t erase. Our response to the month is dulled by grey memories of school uniform and chilly playgrounds, or brightened by the prospect of sticky gold stars and glowing reports. Or maybe your feelings are muddied like mine by peaking too early. Flashback: September, my final year at primary school. I am 11 years old. In one shining month I

am voted head girl, I win the summer story-writing prize, I learn to make a meringue to surprise my mum on her birthday; and I kiss my first kiss – a strawberry bubble-gummed experiment sitting in a pile of hula hoops after PE with Simon Zecca. Teenage years are murkier and it is clear as an adult that I will never again reach such giddy heights of success. But somewhere in that precocious 11-year-old I see the beginnings of the best me. Grown-up September demands a love it or hate it, in or out level of commitment. Don’t mourn for the lazy, scantily-clad summer afternoons. There will be real strawberries again next year, glistening with sugar and oozing sweet juices that turn the cream pink. As your bikini body gently expands under layered jumpers, don’t surrender to the duvet and the kettle and cheap strawberry jam on hot buttered toast. (Actually, do. Do that sometimes.) But also, dig deep. We’ve still got four months of the year to go. Who do you want to be? September, far more than January, draws me in with the promise of new beginnings and fresh hope. And that’s why I make resolutions. I resolve to be the best me. More me. I resolve to write and to cook and to love. Also I’d like to stand on my head. But that will have to wait for the next column... Catherine Considine

Remembering where The Kemptown Rag all started...

Sarah Hall Sussex Magazines are delighted to be continuing the Kemptown Rag started ten years ago by Sarah Hall. It began as a low budget paper which was gradually replaced by glossy pages, and the delivery team initially consisted of Sarah herself, plus various friends and family members. In 2010 Sarah sold the magazine and she sadly died in March 2014 from Motor Neurone Disease. David Crosby, of Crosby & Woods Solicitors, knew Sarah. He says: “Sarah was quite simply a larger than life character and that personality showed through in the magazine and the stories it carried. Accuracy was important but entertaining the readership more so. Major issues and causes affecting Kemptown and its residents mattered deeply to her and she championed them at all times but never far away was always a very mischievous sense of humour and an ability to see the importance of always having fun in life and focusing on the positives rather than the negatives – I am quite sure if she were with us now she would be raising a large glass or two of wine and wish every success to the new owners for giving her ‘baby’ the opportunity to be enjoyed by a whole new generation of readers.”
