Welcome to The Kemptown Rag!

Contents...

It’s holiday time for many of us in August, so we hope you have plenty of time to read your copy of The Kemptown Rag. This month we have news of a great new scheme by the Kemptown Bookshop to alleviate loneliness by organising volunteers to read aloud to book lovers who can’t easily access bookshops or libraries themselves. The Kemp Town Society tell us more about what they do, and we have another fascinating but sad story from Katherine Prior of a vicar of St Mary’s who met an early end 150 years ago while mountaineering in Switzerland. Have a relaxing August! The Kemptown Rag Team info@kemptownrag.co.uk www.kemptownrag.co.uk

The Continentale Cinema

The Continentale Cinema in Sudeley Place, 1985. Built originally as the East Brighton Congregational Church, it replaced an earlier tin chapel and was converted to a cinema in the early 1920s. It was originally known as the Sudeley Place Picture House, then the Kingscliff Picture House, and housed the Playhouse Theatre from 1947-49. It was the Continentale Cinema from around 1950 until 1986, when it was converted into houses. Thanks to the Regency Society for this image from their photographic archives, The James Gray Collection. 7 A great new local scheme...

News from the council...

Kemptown Bookshop New bins launches new Reading for the seafront Aloud programme The award-winning independent Kemptown Bookshop has launched a new programme aimed at alleviating loneliness in the elderly or isolated. By pairing people up with volunteers who will visit and read aloud to them once a week, the project aims to help book lovers who find that they can’t easily access libraries or bookshops any more or who struggle to get out and about. Darion Goodwin, owner of the Kemptown Bookshop, says: “We know that loneliness and isolation are a growing problem amongst the elderly and we know there are a lot of people who, for whatever reason, can’t readily access a bookshop or library, so we decided to see how we could help.” Darion discussed the issue with charity Age UK and, after they approved his plans, went about setting the scheme up. Volunteers are interviewed and paired up with people in their local area, though travel expenses are paid if public transport is used. A full support pack has Darion Goodwin in the been prepared for volunteers which includes Kemptown Bookshop pre-prepared reading materials and training is given. The bookshop is recruiting volunteers to visit people and read to them for an hour or two each week for an initial six-week period and is also inviting people to nominate someone they feel would benefit from the scheme. Anyone interested in volunteering or nominating someone for a visit can call Darion on 01273 682159 or visit the bookshop at 91 St George’s Road, Brighton, Sussex, BN2 1EE.

The city’s seafront could soon have 300 new bins in a bid to increase recycling rates and prevent plastics from ending up in the sea. The bins will have three separate sections in different colours: Brighton Borough blue for plastic bottles and cans, Hove Borough maroon for glass, and black for ordinary rubbish. It is expected that the first bins will be placed along the central beach area, with the rest being rolled out soon after. If the bins prove successful, they may be used throughout the city.

An article on the work of the Kemp Town Society…

Kemp Town Society For 40 years the Kemp Town Society has been dedicated to three things: Conservation, Community and Culture. "Conservation" means caring for Thomas Read Kemp's original "town" of the 1820s, comprising his grand design of Sussex Square, Lewes Crescent and Arundel and Chichester Terraces. "Community" means bringing people together for the annual Quiz Night and Garden Party, and "Culture" involves supporting artistic and charitable causes, most recently the Brighton Youth Orchestra and the Brighton Community Night Shelter. In recent times Kemptown has come to refer to a much wider and less defined area south of Eastern Road and perhaps as far west as the Steine. The Kemp Town Society also has members here, and indeed as far away as London, but 40% of members live in the 106 houses of the Estate itself. They regard living in this setting as a privilege, each house having a view of the sea and of the gardens. But with all privileges come responsibilities, in this case to maintain the character and appearance of the setting. This might involve lobbying the council to put communal bins in the most suitable places, and to empty them regularly; it also means robustly

The Kemp Town Society garden party challenging the plans for Phases 2 and 3 of the Marina, which threaten to blight the long-cherished view from the Estate. KTS itself has made a collective response and many members are registering their own individual protests. This response is not a serious outbreak of nimbyism, but a concerted attempt to conserve a setting that has been unique in Britain’s seaside architecture for 200 years. If you would like to find out more about the Kemp Town Society, visit the website: http://www.kemptown-society.org.uk/ The site also links to another important aspect of the Society’s work, Who’s Been Living in My House? This is a fascinating and absorbing archive, containing histories of most of the houses on the Estate and lists of the residents of all houses up until the 1970s. The site is well worth visiting.

Our local history article from Katherine Prior at St Mary’s Church...

The Mountaineering Vicar of St Mary’s This summer marks the 150th anniversary of the death of St Mary’s mountaineering vicar. Julius Marshall Elliott was born in Brighton on 24 October 1841. He was the youngest son of the Revd Henry Venn Elliott, the longserving curate at old St Mary’s Chapel - the place of worship that preceded today’s St Mary’s on the corner of St James’s Street and Upper Rock Gardens. In 1866, Julius stepped into his late father’s shoes as the vicar at St Mary’s. The Revd Julius Marshall Elliott of St Mary’s, The young minister was evidently popular with his congregation, photographed shortly before his death, aged 27, possibly because he was not as earnestly devout as his late in a Swiss mountaineering accident 150 years ago father. His real passion was mountaineering. With several years’ experience in the Swiss Alps, he was acknowledged by his peers as a skilful, measured climber - all of which makes his death more of a mystery. On 27 July 1869, he and another mountaineering vicar, the Revd Phipps, were making the final ascent of the Schreckhorn (the Peak of Terror) in the Bernese Alps, up a face of notorious difficulty. Fatefully, Julius was climbing without ropes. Perhaps he wanted the sensation of conquering the mountain unaided, without artifice. He reached his goal, but in springing jubilantly to the rocks of the summit, he St Mary’s Summer Recitals slipped and fell. His guide grabbed at his arm but could not hold him, and he plunged down the north-east face of the mountain, watched helplessly by Phipps. Saturday, 10 August, 6 pm Anna Kolesnik-Neal, piano His body was later recovered and he was buried Chopin, Debussy, Liszt and Rachmaninov in the cemetery at the village of Grindelwald, at Saturday, 24 August, 6 pm the foot of the Schreckhorn, where his simple grave Natalia Uchitel, piano is still carefully tended. Bach - French Suite in C minor; Schumann, Scriabin Back in Brighton, his bereft congregation set about Saturday, 14 September, 6 pm honouring his memory, and in 1873 they opened Kelleth Piano Trio Beethoven - Archduke Trio the Julius Elliott Memorial Schools in nearby Mount Street. By 1886 the schools were educating over 600 Saturday, 28 September, 6 pm children and were ranked among the best in Brighton. Brighton Chamber Ensemble Borodin - String Quartet no. 2 In 1928 they were reorganized as St Mary’s Junior Shostakovich - Piano Quintet in G Minor Mixed School, and in 1952 as St Mary’s Church of Saturday, 12 October, 6 pm England Primary School. Eventually, in 1978-9, the Belladonna Trio / Mozart and Schubert school was demolished, along with Mount Street itself and the old Rock Brewery, which had latterly housed Saturday, 26 October, 6 pm Natalia Uchitel, piano the local DSS office. Preludes by Bach, & Debussy, Chopin, Rachmaninov More permanent memorials to Julius’s memory 50 minutes of fabulous music include the font in St Mary’s Church, which stands + free refreshments, with a retiring on a shaft of polished granite hewn from the collection in aid of music at St Mary’s. Schreckhorn. There is also a striking window of the St Mary’s Church, Kemp Town nativity dedicated to him in Brighton College chapel, 61 St James’s Street, Brighton BN2 1PR where he had been a pupil from 1855 to 1860.

13 This article is by Father Andrew Manson-Brailsford of St George’s Church...

LGBTI Carol Service 2019 It is with sadness that I was told that the One Body One Faith group (formerly Lesbian and Gay Christian Movement) had decided not to have their LGBTI Christmas carol concert at St George’s Church. I am not fully aware of the debate and reasoning that lies behind the decision. (In that respect I feel that the message was communicated very badly.) Nevertheless, we wish them well in their future ventures. It is important that people realise that St George’s did not wish to have the service moved to another place. We remain an inclusive church where all are welcome as individuals, or groups. We already have two LGBTI choirs and have hosted many other LGBTI groups over the years, and we wish to maintain our relationship with LGBTI groups and people. We also know that we serve Kemp Town, an area which has many LGBTI people as residents living and working as a part of the rich variety of people that make up our community. If local people would like an LGBTI Service of Christmas Celebration and Fun, then we shall look towards working with them to put something together. A brief meeting will be held on Friday 30th August

at 18:00 for those who are interested in organising or taking part in such an event. In terms of a service people have asked, “Why should there be a separate service for LGBTI people?” One day I hope that a separate service will not be necessary. However, we do have special services to honour other groups, be they the military or school or other societies. This is, however, something quite different. There have been groups of people who have suffered in the past, and who have not been allowed the full dignity which they deserve. Hence, we have the women’s world day of prayer. An LGBTI carol service may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it remains important for people who see themselves as a part of the LGBTI communities, and want a Christmas service, to know that they are welcomed for who they are within the Church. As a part of the body of people loved by God. The church cannot just be landlord to groups or invite them as extra people to fill the pews – it should respect individuals with their desire to be part of Christmas and all that it means.

I would also ensure that Brighton and Hove are once more regarded as separate places, rather than lumped together as one big happy city. Obviously, this would require border controls at Grand Avenue, possibly even a wall. Hove residents caught in possession of a ladder will

be detained for suspicious behaviour, and may well face the possibility of being deported to Portslade. One of my measures would involve a lot of very expensive building conversions. However, I’m sure that over time it would more than pay for itself as parents and young children flock to visit the Bouncy Pavilion. I’m convinced the Law Courts could be more appealing too, as either an ice-skating rink or giant massage parlour. I would also ensure that anyone who refers to Brighton as ‘London-by-the-sea’ faces severe penalties, as it’s nothing of the sort. London is a horrible scar on the face of the Earth, whereas Brighton isn’t. I may reconsider this opinion should London build a pier and a big sticky-uppy

thing with a doughnut that goes up and down it, but not before. Kemp Town will be declared a site of Special Scientific Interest, containing as it does my secretary Donna’s fridge, which is filled with ingredients that are unheard of by the rest of the human race. Kemp Town is also home to a wide variety of wildlife, most of which meet on the green in Upper Bedford Street and woof at each other. Naturally, I have many other ideas but I think that’s enough to be going on with for now. In the meantime, I look forward to hearing from Brighton Council. Come on Council, you know it makes sense. News from Badgers tennis club...

Badgers serves up tennis fun for local kids...

Badgers in Kemptown - Brighton’s oldest tennis club - has launched a new community initiative to get more local youngsters playing the sport. The club, in Church Place, has a thriving and very successful junior membership producing many national and county champions. And now it is reaching out to the nearby Manor Gym community-run sports project in Whitehawk, to offer free coaching for local children.

Badgers in Kemptown

Jon Miller, head coach at Badgers, said: "The juniors are extremely important to us as they are the future of the club and in the long-term the success of British tennis. We need to give more children the chance to try the sport and hopefully fall in love with it. We’re very proud of the fact that many of our current adult team players have come through the junior ranks.." Jon added. "Many of our county team members started playing when they were five or six so we have a great deal of experience nurturing, supporting, then helping them improve." Youngsters at the Manor, set up in 2005 to provide free sports and other activities for local youngsters in Whitehawk, will now be able to give tennis a go with weekly sessions. Free coaching will be offered every Tuesday between 5pm-6pm with racquets and balls provided.

Tanya Saunders, Managing Director at The Manor, who's been an enthusiastic partner with Badgers, said: “The club are making a real contribution to our community by offering local children the opportunity to play tennis completely free of charge. It’s a great partnership.” Badgers also offers a wide range of courses, dropins and coaching for all ages and standards for members and non-members. Club sessions are held on Saturday and Sunday afternoons and Thursday evenings with the emphasis on fun, social tennis. For more competitive players there are opportunities to join the men and ladies' squads with teams in both the summer and winter Sussex County Leagues.
