Meet a local Kemptown business owner...

Kemptown Person... Hervé Guyat Hervé Guyat runs The Kemptown Trading Post in St George’s Road and his husband Georges runs its coffee shop, Cup of Joe’s. Herve also owns the New Steine Hotel & Bistro. How did you come to be running several local businesses? Georges and I moved to Brighton from London as I wanted to open my first boutique hotel in July 2000. I had already been working in luxury hotels as well as hosting a very fashionable restaurant on St Martin's Lane called the Pelican for the previous 10 years and thought it was time for me to run my own business. I have always been passionate about the hotel and restaurant industry and I wanted to put my own stamp on it. This is why I started with the New Steine Hotel & French Bistro offering traditional homemade French food. l expanded with the purchase of Gulliver's Hotel in June 2003 and ran it until this September 2019 when I sold it to concentrate on the New Steine Hotel and Restaurant where I am currently doing some refurbishment. The Kemptown Trading Post was all about running a business around our area, Kemptown, where Georges and I have been living since 2000. Georges had been events manager since we moved to Brighton and he wanted to do something that would be more community based with daytime hours. We saw the Kemptown Trading Post & Café for sale and decided that it was a great opportunity for us to have a joint venture but each have one side of the business and not tread on each other's toes. Georges created Cup of Joe which is an amazing community café where he offers homemade cooking. Georges was also in the catering trade in London working for some of the most prestigious restaurants. Between his London experience and what he learned being events manager in Brighton, like me he just put his own stamp on his business. Tell us more about The Kemptown Trading Post... It is a very interesting shop where you can find some amazing vintage clothing, great recycled furniture which you will not find anywhere else, antique furniture and bric-a-brac as well as a tarot reader. We like to think that it reflects the Brighton atmosphere of being very arty, with some local artists exhibiting, as well as being eclectic. We are also talking to a local hairdresser to add to the list.

Georges (left) and Herve (right)

What are the most popular items for sale? Everything. Some people come for the furniture, others to have their tarot read and a strong base of clients who come for vintage clothing. What sort of food can we get at Cup of Joe’s? Traditional British café food such as English, vegetarian and vegan breakfast, sandwiches, baked potatoes; but some French food as well, such as soup, tart of the day, Croque Monsieur and more. How will you be celebrating the New Year? We will be with our friends and family at our house. We all get together in the kitchen, open a bottle of champagne; no doubt everyone will help with the cooking. After dinner, Georges will take out all his fancy dress costumes so each of the guests can choose what they want to wear and we will be dancing till the early hours of the morning. The Kemptown Trading Post and Cup of Joe’s are at 28 St George’s Road. For more information, see kemptowntradingpost.co.uk or cupofjoebrighton.co.uk.

News from the council...

Rejuvenating the Black Rock site The Black Rock site in Kemp Town is set to be rejuvenated with a project led by Brighton & Hove City Council. The former lido site lies at the far eastern end of the seafront, west of Brighton Marina. It has been derelict and underused for more than 40 years. There is now a chance to regenerate the site. Aims of the project The aims of the project are to prepare the site for leisure or recreation use, improve access and the appearance of the land, and deliver a wider package of improvements including more attractive public space, restoration of the Grade 2 listed reading rooms, and a bigger and more protected space for the shingle wildlife area. Proposals include: •

Clearing the site (removing lido foundations, old sea defences and anchors, and a disused military pillbox) and improving the look of the area

Creating space for events and recreation (such as a multi-use games area)

Unattached? Aged 50+?

The Group offers a great opportunity to meet new friends of both sexes in a welcoming atmosphere. Walks, lunches and dinners, golf, theatre, pub evenings, sports and holidays. We have a great time. So push open that door, come in and join us. You’ll be very welcome.

Take a look at our website

www.thegroup.org.uk

Improving access for cyclists and pedestrians, including a fully accessible pathway along a rebuilt and extended sea wall, and a new link for cyclists and pedestrians between Madeira Drive and Brighton Marina via Black Rock

Renovating the Grade-II listed Old Reading Room, making it available for future letting

Making a new pedestrian link from the Volk’s Workshop at Duke’s Mound via a beach boardwalk and the new sea wall into the south part of Brighton Marina

A new vision for Black Rock Rejuvenating the Black Rock site has long been overdue and is a vital part of reconnecting and opening up the eastern seafront. By improving access to the site, renovating the Old Reading Room and Temple, and improving the local area, the project aims to respect the history and heritage of Brighton & Hove’s seafront. Leader of the council Nancy Platts said: “The Black Rock site has been derelict for around 40 years and we now have a golden opportunity to breathe new life into this important, but neglected part of our seafront.” The council held two public engagement events in November and there will be an opportunity to comment on the Black Rock proposals when the planning application is submitted. This was expected to be mid-December 2019 (after this edition of The Kemptown Rag went to print). If all approvals are in place, work at Black Rock is scheduled to begin in 2020. Completion is targeted for spring 2021.

A two-day showcase at the Brighton Waldorf School in Roedean Road...

Brighton Waldorf School Showcase celebrates pupils’ successes Helping to create and nurture inspiring futures is the message from the Brighton Waldorf School as it opens its doors to prospective parents and pupils at its inaugural two-day Showcase of Pupil Performance and Academic Achievements on Thursday 23rd and Friday 24th January between 1pm and 4pm. Following the success of this year’s great GCSE results and recognition for the positive Ofsted improvements, the school is hosting the interactive Showcase to give pupils and staff a platform to demonstrate, exhibit and celebrate the strong improvements, new classes, initiatives and creative channels that have grown and excelled over the last year. Speaking about the two-day event, School Director Damian Mooncie said: “The Showcase will be a mix of original pupil performances of poems, songs and drama, plus Curriculum Exhibitions alongside bookable ‘live’ Classroom Tours. We believe the event will be the perfect way for the school - its teachers and pupils - to share their Waldorf education experiences and give visitors an opportunity to see, first-hand, the flow of intellectual and creative stimulation and enrichment within our school and its curriculum.” In addition, at the end of both days, Damian will be delivering a ‘Discover Waldorf Education’ Talk which will be followed by a Question and Answer session. There will also be two special performances at the end of each day - The Crucible (Thursday) and A Christmas Carol (Friday).

Damian added: “Through the Showcase, we hope visitors, prospective parents and pupils see how happy, enthusiastic and animated our pupils are at sharing their school experiences and educational journeys - and at showing their school and talents at their absolute best.” To find out more about The Brighton Waldorf School, get more details on the Showcase and its activities, to book on to a ‘live’ Classroom Tour during the Showcase or to arrange a general visit, please contact: The Reception Team on tel: 01273 386300, visit www.brightonwaldorfschool.org/contact-us or email: enquiries@brightonwaldorfschool.org

14 An event organized by the Friends of St George’s Church...

Talk the talk…wobble the walk Kemptown resident Alastair Hignell is lined up to present another illustrated talk at St George’s Church on January 30th. It is three years since the former England rugby player, county cricketer and BBC commentator offered his services to the Friends of St George’s in their ongoing campaign to preserve the beautiful building. That talk - Life is For Living - described how the onset of incurable Multiple Sclerosis in 1999 had led him to re-evaluate his life and how he lived it. He was able to draw on the experience of meeting the famous - from Nelson Mandela to Jonny Wilkinson learning from the feted - Michael J Fox to Christopher Columbus and Edvard Nietzsche - and the familiar - his friends and family - to learn how he could live his life to the best of his ability - and how his discoveries had a universal as well as a personal resonance. Three years down the line, Alastair is facing a new challenge. 2019, to put it bluntly, was not kind to him, and caused him to question nearly all of his

previous assumptions and his previous certainties. He discovered that it was all very well knowing the theory of how he should adapt to deal with the new realities of his life; putting it into practice was a different matter altogether. As befits a broadcaster and public speaker, he could talk the talk. When it came to Walking the Walk, the wheelchair user found that he was wobbling all over the place. Re-booting his philosophy has been a painful process. The lessons he learnt along the way - and is still learning - form the core of his latest talk: “TALK THE TALK....WOBBLE THE WALK...” 30th January, 7.30pm; tickets from Eventbrite.co.uk; friendsofstgeorgeschurch@gmail.com

We’re talking to Mark Dalton of lookafteryourdog.co.uk.

New business comes to Brighton If you love dogs read on... Mark, I hear you’re bringing a new business to Brighton that will interest pet owners and particularly dog lovers. Tell us more. Yes, my brother has been running a successful dog boarding business in the Midlands for some years. Living locally, I know there are so many dog owners around Brighton & Hove who want to lead a more flexible life and need a trusted home for their precious pet while they’re away. Does that mean you will be looking for people to host these dogs in their own homes? Yes, we are keen to hear from people who have a secure home with space, and most importantly, love dogs. What sort of person would fit the bill? You may be retired or working from home, and you may already have a sociable or good natured dog who would enjoy the company. Pet lovers who’ve had a dog in the past often, in our experience, enjoy the chance to host a dog on a flexible basis. What would potential home boarders need to do? Firstly, get in touch with us and we can answer your questions. Depending on how many dogs you look after, you may need a licence. We are experienced in working with the Councils and will guide all dog boarders through the regulatory process. The

We organise the Kemptown trail and produce the local trail map. Three of our members told us about their experience in opening up their homes for the first time. “It’s a mixture of excitement, hard work and trepidation,” says Sophie Wake, winner of Best Open House 2019. Sophie started showing her lively animal paintings with a group of artists, but in her third year she decided to open as a solo show. “With the support of the Kemptown Arts Association, to my delight our Open House was a great success. My fears around opening to the general public were unfounded. It proved to be a great honour to meet and greet all sorts of folk into my home.”

James Foley opened his home in 2019 and came to the Kemptown Arts Association meetings to meet other local artists. “Through the meetings I was guided in opening my first Open House and was able to make contact with artists and invite them to show in my home: painters, printmakers and craft makers whose work complemented my own pottery very well.” Asked how his first experience went: “We’re already looking forward to the next one!” Cathy Moss and Rupert Bagilhole first opened their flat two years ago. The high ceilings of their seafront flat allow the walls to be covered in paintings and prints hung in the manner of a salon, drawing in many visitors. “The support of other artists helped. We’ve really enjoyed opening our home as an art space.” The Kemptown Arts Association gets together once a month to share ideas on how to promote the local trail: www.KemptownArts.org.uk. Membership is £15 a year - it's a great way to meet other artists in the area. Contact Nick at info@kemptownarts.org.uk for further details and the date of our next meeting. Loraine Hayes

A writing competition for children and young people…

“If I don’t speak, who will?”... Alfred Huberman Holocaust Memorial Day, 27th January 2020, marks 75 years since the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Brighton & Hove resident for 65 years and Holocaust survivor Alfred Huberman dedicated his life to bearing witness to the Holocaust in the hope that his own harrowing story would help future generations learn from the lessons of the past, and to show how genocide is a process which starts with hatred, prejudice and discrimination. Hailing from a close-knit Polish-Jewish family of over 50 members, only Alfred and one sister survived the concentration camps. One of the child Holocaust survivors brought to Britain at the end of the war, by 1946 he was living in Hove. He worked as a master tailor in Brighton, married a local girl and had three children. Alfred died in 2011, but his legacy is The Alfred Huberman Award to encourage young people to learn the lessons of the Holocaust and to ensure that its horrors should never be forgotten.

News from the council...

Figures show the city council’s total carbon footprint was 21,793 tonnes CO2e compared with 24,965 in 2017/18, a fall of 12.7%. This exceeds a council target of a 4% reduction for the year. The figures look at emissions including electricity, gas and oil use in corporate buildings, schools and housing (communal supplies) as well as emissions from street lighting electricity and fuel usage from fleet vehicles. The council’s goal is to be carbon neutral by 2030.

An update on the council’s policy on the use of glyphosate...

Council to continue with manual weeding... Brighton & Hove City Council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee agreed at its meeting on 26th November to end the use of glyphosate by its Environmental Management services with immediate effect, other than in exceptional cases to kill invasive plant species such as Japanese knotweed or to kill tree stumps. better planned, using information from this year. Conservative councillor Lee Wares was concerned about the maintenance of the pavements and the number of weeds growing in the gutter, which are tearing up the road surface outside his house. He said the new policy could create an exponential risk in the cost of maintaining the pavements and roads. However, Labour councillor Theresa Fowler commented: “I am really pleased that we’ve all agreed to reduce pesticides. I’ve heard of complaints from people that have been worried because their dogs have been poisoned from sniffing the weeds that have been sprayed and I’ve actually enjoyed walking up my road now, looking at all the weeds and the flowers that pop up from nowhere.” Glyphosate, commonly known as Roundup, is the world’s most widely sold weed killer, but many experts believe it causes cancer in humans while destroying the environment and wildlife. The removal of weeds in parks and on hard surfaces will instead be undertaken manually and the committee will review this approach in autumn 2020. Cityclean have responsibility for removing weeds on hard surfaces. They have explored different options but the only effective and affordable method was manual removal. This will involve employing an additional six staff for six months during the growing season which will cost £70,000 a year, which is £33,000 more than it would cost with the use of glyphosate. A report to the council said that ending the use of pesticides on hard surfaces would be likely to mean that there will be more visible weeds for longer periods of time. However, weeds contribute to biodiversity by providing a habitat and source of food for insects. Cllr Pete West said that the Green Party had been calling for this policy for a number of years. However, he thought it was important that pavements remained weed-free to avoid trip hazards, so it was sensible to keep the new technique under review. Rachel Chasseaud of City Environmental Management reported that the council had only carried out about six weeks of manual weed removal in 2019 as a test and in the winter the weeds would start to die off naturally. In 2020 the weed removal will be much Please send your local articles to info@kemptownrag.co.uk or call 01273 551021

21 Al-Anon provide support for anyone affected by someone else’s drinking…

Al-Anon Family Groups Al-Anon Family Groups provide support to anyone whose life is, or has been, affected by someone else’s drinking, regardless of whether that person is still drinking or not, with currently over 700 meetings around the UK and Ireland and over 24,000 meetings worldwide. Lisa, 49, shares her story: “I met my husband when I was 20 years old. There was an instant attraction and within a month of meeting we were living together and inseparable. I knew he liked to have a drink, but I had no idea what an alcoholic was. “On our wedding day, he was hung-over even though I had pleaded with him not to drink the night before. I worried every time he wasn’t home when he was supposed to be – “Is he dead?” I would ask myself. It got worse when I got pregnant; when our first child was born, he disappeared for almost four days. After our second child was born things got even worse; he was hardly ever home. “When the children cried for his attention, he would put on earphones and turn the volume up. It was so awful

that I began to realise I was happier when he wasn’t there, so finally I asked him to leave and he did! “With the help of Al-Anon meetings I am improving. I have begun detaching from responsibilities that are not mine. For almost 30 years I have carried the responsibility that it was my fault the children were not raised by a decent father. My children ended up having a good life, and that was thanks to me. It’s hard to feel comfortable with that, but it is necessary for me to let go of blame, both of him, and of myself.” There are meetings at several venues in Brighton including the Friends’ Meeting House, the Brighthelm Centre, Cascade Coffee Shop in Baker Street and the Salvation Army hall in Park Crescent Terrace, near The Level.
