Welcome to The Kemptown Rag!

February hasn’t been a great month weatherwise, but it’s always lovely in March to see the signs of spring like daffodils and buds on the trees. Venturing outside now seems a much more welcome prospect. This month we hear about the great service provided by Ronald McDonald House in Abbey Road. Paul Thomas has some great tips for springtime entertainment and we also have information on a few classical concerts coming up at St Mary’s Church. If you’ve got an event coming up that you’d like to let people know about, do get in touch.

Daddy Longlegs The “Daddy Longlegs” was an electric sea train built by Magnus Volk, whose electric railway had not at that time been extended east of Paston Place. The sea train ran from 1896 to 1901 for 2¾ miles between the Banjo Groyne, opposite Paston Place, and Rottingdean. It was popular but was very slow at high tide. This photo was taken around 1899. Accommodation in Abbey Road for families with children in hospital…
Ronald McDonald House Ronald McDonald House Charities UK provides free accommodation and support to families with seriously ill children in hospital. There are currently 11 houses across the UK, just a short walk away from the partnered NHS hospitals which provide specialist care for children. Equipped with communal kitchen/living areas, laundry facilities, Wi-Fi, en-suite bedrooms and hospital line phones, the houses provide families with everything they need. Parents are able to have their other children stay with them at the house and have friends and family visit them whenever they wish, making it a true ‘home away from home’. Here in Brighton, we have an 18-bedroom house. Working alongside the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital and the Trevor Mann Baby Unit, we are able to accommodate around 200 families from all over Sussex, Surrey, Kent and even further afield each year. In 2019, families stayed with us for an average of 26 nights.

In 2017, Poppy’s family stayed with us for 356 days after she was born with Gastroschisis. Without our house in Brighton, the family would have had to make a 45-minute journey to and from the hospital each day just to see their little girl. Spending a fortune on petrol, they would have the added stress of not being able to be at the hospital as much as they wanted, especially if there was an emergency in the early hours of the morning. Staying with us completely removed those worries. They were able to be as close to Poppy as possible, along with their other daughter and Poppy’s big sister, Grace. The family have been back to visit the house many times since being discharged, to meet up with the House Team and let them know how well they are all getting on now back at home. Poppy is doing remarkably well; she is almost three and will be starting nursery this year. On their last visit, the family expressed some kind words about the house and charity: ‘’Truly, being so close to Poppy in hospital impacted her recovery. This charity provides a beautiful, beautiful service. It’s an integral part of a child’s life in hospital – keeping their family close. The impact having these houses makes is heart-warming.’’ For more information, visit rmhc.org.uk/our-houses/ brighton-house/

10 News from the council…
New Law To Protect Animals A new law covering the sale of puppies and kittens is due to come into effect from April. ‘Lucy’s Law’ will mean that puppies and kittens can no longer be sold by a pet shop or commercial dealer unless they have bred the animal themselves. Instead, anyone looking to buy or adopt a puppy or kitten under six months must either deal directly with the breeder or an animal rehoming centre. dealing illegally in dogs and cats. Sometimes the puppies and kittens never recover. So please never buy a pet without checking the trader’s licence and the conditions they’ve been kept in.” If you’re thinking of buying a cat or dog, follow these guidelines to help combat the illegal trade in pet animals:
The law is named after Lucy, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, who died after being subjected to terrible conditions on a puppy farm. Dogs like Lucy are often kept by breeders to produce multiple litters of puppies, which are taken from their mothers at just a few weeks old and advertised online or sold in pet shops. Brighton & Hove City Council plays a key part in the fight to protect animal welfare. Many activities involving animals such as selling pets, breeding dogs for sale, boarding cats or dogs or day care for dogs require a licence from the council. Each licence holder is inspected. The council’s chair of licensing, Councillor Jackie O’Quinn, said: “We do a lot of work to make sure businesses working with animals in the city treat them correctly, so please do always follow the guidance if you’re thinking of getting a pet. We come across awful stories of animals kept in horrendous conditions from unscrupulous people
•
Consider getting a rescue animal from a reputable UK rehoming organisation – you can check if the organisation is a member of the Association of Dogs and Cats Homes
•
If you’re thinking of buying a puppy, always ask to see a copy of the trader’s licence or ask for the licence number so you can check with the local council
•
Never buy a puppy or kitten without asking to see them with their mum and the conditions they live in
•
Never buy a puppy or kitten younger than eight weeks old.

The latest column from Gary Walker…
Brighton Races... As my regular reader will know, I’m always happy to advise the people responsible on how to improve the traffic system in Brighton. To this end, I have thought of a system that will not only transform traffic-flow but also cut emissions, thus improving air-quality and helping to combat climate change. The first stage will be to dig a number of narrow trenches in every road with a metal strip along both edges. This will undoubtedly cause traffic delays, diversions and cones everywhere, so residents will notice no real difference. I anticipate that the timescale and cost of this will be about as reliable as HS2. However, some of the cost can be recouped, since very few people own a car with a prong sticking down at the front with a wire brush each side. These people will have to visit an out-of-town site to hire a suitable vehicle, from a range of classic racing and rally cars of the past. These will be made entirely of plastic and have an electric motor, so will be lightweight and extremely nippy. Since they only have 1 or 2 seats they will also keep visitor numbers down, thus easing congestion at the fag counter in Morrisons. There will also be chicanes at strategic spots such as St Peter’s Church and the Old Steine, to add a frisson of extra excitement to an already thrilling journey. You may think I have overlooked pedestrians in this scheme, but not so. There will be a number of pedestrian overpasses in the shape of half a huge tyre, which I’m almost certain Goodyear will pay to advertise on. Of course, many people use buses, so these will have to be retro-fitted with the new system. I am
C
aware that Brighton already has some electric buses, but my idea will save the drivers having to plug into a socket at the garage and trailing a great long extension-lead behind them. I may have to check my facts on that one. Now, there may be people who think my idea has a whiff of familiarity, but I would argue that genius is the ability to take an existing idea and adapt it to current needs. Given the scale of this plan, it may require a certain amount of private investment. Should you wish to get in on the ground floor, cash only please, in used notes. Thank you. Gaz

News from the council…
Council exploring ‘car-free’ city centre Brighton & Hove city councillors have agreed to explore the possibility of the city becoming ‘car-free’ by 2023. Members of the Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee, meeting at the end of January, requested a report that explores the feasibility and costs of developing a car-free city. The report will be presented to them in October 2020. It will also look at costs and practicalities of any project or any possible exemptions. The committee’s chair, Anne Pissaridou, said: “We were elected on a manifesto pledge to make our city carbon neutral by 2030. We have declared a climate emergency and are making progress on decarbonisation. But we must take major steps to reach our ambitious target, so we are proud to work cross-party and champion a car-free city centre. Crucially though, this will be for the climate assembly to decide, as our residents must lead on how we combat the climate crisis.” Councillors also noted that the joint notice of motion
should be considered by the city’s Climate Assembly, which is due to meet this spring. Green councillor Amy Heley said: “I proposed this motion because I’ve been inspired by European cities such as Ghent and Oslo, who have demonstrated that a car-free city centre can be beneficial for all. Having a greater understanding of city-centre traffic is a realistic response to the emergency of the climate crisis. It offers an opportunity to deal with congestion, road safety, and dangerous levels of air pollution. This report will help the city understand what the proposals emerging from other UK cities could mean for Brighton & Hove and our ambitious climate targets.”

Concerts at St Mary’s Church... Here are a few of the classical recitals coming up at St Mary’s Church in St James’s Street…
Brighton Voices Spring Concert Saturday 28th March, 6pm Nick Andrews directs Brighton Voices and tenor Tony Rutherford in Hiawatha's Wedding Feast (1898), the first in Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's trilogy of cantatas based on Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's epic poem, The Song of Hiawatha. The concert is rounded off by some Gilbert and Sullivan favourites, including the Finale from Act 1 of the Pirates of Penzance. A perfect pre-dinner spring concert to herald longer days and lighter evenings - tickets cost £5 and are available on the door.
Fine Music for Free – Alice Ferrarese
opens with young Brighton cellist Alice Ferrarese's debut recital, featuring Fauré's dramatic and evocative Elegy. There is the Andante from Popper's Sonata for two cellos, Op 16, which Alice will be performing with her teacher (and St Mary's favourite) Ivana Peranic, and there will also be music by Boccherini, JS Bach and Brahms. The recital is free and Alice Ferrarese includes complimentary refreshments, but there will be a retiring collection.

Soprano Rose Berelowitz sings a selection of gorgeous opera arias, including music by Dvorak, Handel and Mozart. Accompanied by Nick Andrews, the songs will be interspersed with a suite of piano pieces by Francois Couperin. As with all the recitals in this series, it's free and includes complimentary Rose Berelowitz refreshments, but there will be a retiring collection, which goes towards creating more free and affordable music performances at St Mary's for everyone to enjoy. St Mary’s Church is warm, wheelchair accessible, and music-loving dogs on a lead are welcome. For more information on these and other concerts at St Mary’s, visit stmaryschurchbrighton.org.uk/ whats-on

17 News from Martlets hospice…
This article is from local charity Time To Talk Befriending…
Show your bloomers for Martlets
My time with Doris (aged 92 years)
Martlets is calling for people in Brighton and Hove to open up their outside spaces for their Open Gardens weekend on Saturday 13 or Sunday 14 June 2020.
“Whenever I visit, whether it’s at the weekend or after work, Doris always greets me at the door with a smile! Lipstick and signature earrings on, we sit down promptly for a cup of tea!
This year the charity is asking everyone to consider opening their garden – large or small - from patio or ‘outside room’ to blooming borders and luscious lawns to help create a community weekend of shared spaces for others to enjoy. Visitors to the gardens will be encouraged to make a donation to help raise funds for life-changing hospice care for local people and their families. Liz Davies, Martlets Community Fundraising Officer, said: “When you open your garden for Martlets we’ll support you all the way from planning, advice and guidance through to promotional posters, equipment and practical support – we can help with everything but the weather!” Please register interest by 5 April. To find out more visit www.martlets.org.uk/open-gardens/ or call 01273 747 455 or email fundraising@martlets.org.uk
“The best china and Garibaldi biscuits are the norm. The hour we spend together flies by. There are 51 years between us but who knew we could find so much in common! I’m sure if we had grown up at the same time we would’ve been double trouble! Visiting Doris brings me so much joy. It’s hard to believe that before I started befriending her, she didn’t speak to anyone for weeks at a time. Befriending has changed my life. Could it change yours?” Volunteer Kate, aged 41 years. Want to find out more about Befriending? All it takes is a heart for older people and an hour a week or fortnight of your time. Contact Time to Talk Befriending today via volunteers@tttb.org.uk / 01273 737710 or visit www.tttb.org.uk.
