Welcome to the November edition of KTR!!

Contents

Goodness, November already and the year is flying by! So what has November to offer apart from dropping temperatures and shorter days?

Page 7 Neighbourhood History at St Mary’s

Well there is Bonfire Night on the 5th which can be a nice evening out with the family ( but not the dog!). On Sunday 13th we have Remembrance Sunday and if you have any Scottish connection of any kind use St. Andrew’s Day on the 30th as the perfect excuse to have a wee glass of whiskey and to dance a reel!

This sounds like a fascinating exhibition...

Neighbourhood History Exhibition at St Mary’s Church Opens 19th November, 2pm; all welcome St Mary’s Church is getting a facelift! Major repairs to the elevation overlooking Upper Rock Gardens will be unveiled at Christmas, and to celebrate the church is hosting a small neighbourhood history exhibition exploring what the area around St Mary’s used to look like, especially in the years during and after the Second World War. The exhibition focuses on the area to the east and north of St Mary’s, where there was so much demolition in the 1960s and 70s, razing streets of terraced housing and light industry. It’s a mix of old and new photographs and reminiscences of long-term residents. Margaret Sinden’s family was one of the last to live in Edwin Place, a row of tiny houses that ran between Upper Bedford Street and Montague Place, just behind Eastern Road. She remembers the new towers of flats that now dominate the area springing up remarkably quickly: “I don’t remember that people did an awful lot of campaigning or anything that

things were going to be demolished. That just sort of happened really one minute they were there and the next minute they’d gone.” Many residents recall vividly the old pubs, shops and factories that used to dot the area. Sometimes, as Michael Brittain says of the old Setyres factory on Eastern Road, it’s the smell of things that lodges in the memory: “There was always the smell of rubber, burning rubber, around.” There are also memories of St Mary’s Junior School in Mount Street, which was demolished in 1978. Betty Field remembers the peculiarity of swimming instruction at the school during the war: “We used to have to do ‘Land Swimming Drill’ in the playground and we had sloping little wooden things with bits across and you had to lay on your tummy across them and sort of dangle your legs in mid-air and they used to shout ‘Pull, bend and stretch’ and it was so painful, we’d do anything to get out of it! But if you didn’t do that you weren’t allowed to go swimming...” The exhibition opens at St Mary’s Church on Saturday, 19th November at 2pm. Everyone is welcome and we’re particularly keen to welcome back former pupils of St Mary’s Junior School. There is an opportunity to add your own memories and pictures to the exhibition too, so please bring along anything you feel may interest others. For more information please call Fr Andrew Woodward on 01273 698601. St Mary’s gratefully acknowledges the Heritage Lottery Fund, National Churches Trust, Garfield Weston Foundation and Sussex Historic Churches Trust for help with funding the repairs and exhibition.

Meet a very talented Kemptown resident...

Kemptown Person – Naomi Foyle Naomi Foyle lives in Chichester Place. She is a science fiction writer, an award-winning poet and a part-time university lecturer. How long have you lived in Kemptown? Fifteen years, or over twice as long as I’ve lived anywhere else. I was in a cute little flat on Devonshire Place for a year before moving to my current home, a beautiful basement flat I’ve remained in thanks to a generous landlord, who values the presence of a friend in the building over profit. What do you like about the area? The ravishing sea views, of course, and being at the wild end of the beach – I’ve even swum with a dolphin! I also love the sense of ‘the village’, being able to nip out for organic veg, superb coffee, great literature and cheerful chat at Seed and Sprout, Ground, and Kemptown Bookshop, where I used to run poetry courses. Tell us more about your science fiction novels... My first novel, Seoul Survivors, is a cynical cyberchiller set in South Korea, where I lived for three years. In

contrast, The Gaia Chronicles, an eco-SF quartet set in a post-fossil fuel Mesopotamia, offers hope that climate change may force humanity to morally evolve. In Book One, Astra, a young girl gradually realises her Eden-esque home is not as idyllic as it seems. The book’s not Young Adult, but has fans from the age of 16 to 80. The series also explores a refugee crisis, disability rights activism, and what one character calls ‘Abrahamic-Shamanic’ religions. We hear you have unfortunately been diagnosed with breast cancer. How have you coped with that? The diagnosis was a terrible blow, but I quickly realised I couldn’t live my life in fear. So I empowered myself, making lifestyle changes to support my body through treatment. I quit drinking alcohol, started eating and juicing ten fruit and veg a day and, crucially, asked friends and family for help. During my treatment – which I’m so grateful to say is working – I’ve been enormously supported by a loving, world-wide community, not least neighbours here in Kemptown and the fantastic staff at the hospital. I’ve also been writing poems and rocking the Buddhist Alien 3 look! What do you do in your spare time? A vocal campaigner for a just peace in IsraelPalestine, I’m currently taking a break from activism. I love travel, but under the cosh of chemo, a trip to London to see the Georgia O’Keeffe exhibition has been my greatest adventure lately. Here’s a great event to get you in the mood for Christmas...

Out with the old, in with the new...

Rainbow Chorus Winter Concert at St George’s Church

Zip Wire Receives Planning Consent

Our tuneful tour will feature a collection of songs from old Christmas classics to contemporary favourites that will bring festive cheer and fill St George’s Church with music and song that you’ll go Gaga for! From a ‘Fairytale in New York’ all the way to ‘Africa’, ‘Jingle Bells’ will be ringing and even if we can’t promise a ‘White Christmas’ we have a ‘Snow Patrol’ on stand-by. From Verdi and Vivaldi to standards made famous by Nat King Cole or Louis Armstrong, there’s a musical gift for everyone! Taking the reins on this melodious journey is the chorus’s dynamic musical director Aneesa Chaudhry, expertly assisted by renowned accompanist Mojca Monte. The full concert will be accessible to the deaf and hard of hearing, with the wonderful Marco Nardi as our BSL interpreter. The Sledge of Glory departs from St George’s Church, St George’s Road, Kemp Town, on Saturday 10th December at 7.30pm. Book your seat early in order to avoid disappointment.

Planning permission has been granted for the construction at Dalton’s Bastion (the site of the former Brighton Wheel) of a 22.5m high tower with 300m zip wire to a landing area along Madeira Drive, opposite the entrance to Atlingworth Street. There will be storage and changing facilities, as well as a café, and the existing base plinth from the Brighton Wheel will be retained. The attraction could be open by next Easter.

The latest musings of Gary Walker, formerly known as “the Grumpy Old Git”...

Old Age Penchant Just recently I officially became a pensioner. ‘You, Gary?’ you cry. ‘But surely you’re only in your forties and obviously related to George Clooney!’ But yes it’s true, I am now legally old and wise. As such I am obliged to pass on the relevant requirements to other people who may be approaching this watershed themselves. In the shop: Always tell the assistant/check-out person your life history. Not only will they enjoy it, but I can vouch for the fact that you will also hear deep sighs of appreciation from the people in the queue behind you. As an added extra, when you receive your purchase (say, a packet of cigarette papers) make sure you gasp in astonishment and say, ‘Ten shillings for a packet of fag papers? I used to have a night out down Sherry’s and a taxi home for that!’

doesn’t go amiss.) The fact that you were born long after the Second World War doesn’t really matter, since young people believe the War was started by Alfred the Great after Adolf Hitler burnt some of Queen Victoria’s roses.

Younger people: When addressing young people it is mandatory to at some point use the phrase, ‘I fought in the War for the likes of you.’ (Should you possess a walking-stick, a bit of waggling here

While on the subject of young people, they will try to tell you how the music they listen to is so much better than the old rubbish you were brought up on. Rubbish like Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Led Zeppelin etc. I merely point out to them that I went to see Black Sabbath once and not only could I not understand a word Ozzy Osbourne was singing, I was also deaf for two hours afterwards. Now that’s what I call music!

There’s a lot on offer at Badgers Tennis Club...

ACE Party Place - Badgers Tennis Club Badgers Tennis Club in the heart of Kemp Town is the perfect spot to hit a few balls –it’s also a great place to hit the bar!

Set in beautiful gardens in Church Place, the club is the perfect setting for a wide range of events and parties including Christmas, New Year celebrations, birthdays, and wedding receptions. The purpose-built clubhouse has a fully licensed bar and can cater for up to 70 people. There are kitchen facilities, a background/PA music system, party lighting and plenty of room for a band or DJ. When the weather is fine, guests can also make use of the pretty gardens and terraces. Events Secretary Dora Nelson explained: “The clubhouse really is a fantastic place to hold a party and can look really spectacular. It’s a very versatile space and of course the setting is really idyllic. We can help and advise on all aspects from catering to arranging special bar requests and we also have contacts with local bands and DJs.” The clubhouse also has facilities for the disabled; it is an ideal space for meetings and is already used for yoga and pilates classes. Children’s birthday celebrations have proved extremely popular and there is the option of using the tennis courts for a party with a difference. “The best advice is to come along and have a look at the facilities, the gardens and the lovely setting,” added Dora. Of course the club – often described as Kemp Town’s secret garden - is also keen to hear from new playing members with all standards welcome. There are club afternoons on Saturday and Sundays and also Thursday evenings. A wide range of courses and group drop-ins are also available along with training sessions, junior performance squads, fun tournaments and school holiday camps.

For more information please email info@badgerstennis.com. For information on hiring the club please contact Dora on 07720 409580.
