A NEW TYPE OF DINER

We offer incredible new versions of food and drink that you might find familiar. We have sodas made in house with some help from our centrifuge machine. They have around one tenth of the sugar of regular sodas. Our cocktails are crafted with loving care using house made essences, bitters and artisanal spirits. Some of our cakes have no added sugar. Some are completely dairy free. We are really proud of our velvety, house made, organic cashew and tiger nut milk blend.

Our coffee has to be tasted to be believed. We only use the best butter, virgin coconut oil (for our many non dairy/vegan creations) and extra virgin olive oil for dressing. Our tea is brewed in clean glass, to the perfect temperature.

Everything we have is completely free of gluten. That's right, everything. Even our house made sourdough, sweet bakes and our buttermilk pancakes. Our aim is excellence as standard. We make super food for super people.

Welcome to The Kemptown Rag

Contents...

The days are getting shorter and pre-Christmas events are already fast approaching, including the annual Christmas Artists Open Houses festival, which starts on 23rd November – an ideal way to start your Christmas shopping. This month we feature local resident Kevin Rance, who is a trustee of the Brighton & Hove Arts Council; we also hear from the organisers of next year’s Kemptown Carnival about how they want to make this a truly community-led event – go to the meeting on 28th November to find out more – and the Friends of St George’s Church invite you to join them. They have some great events and outings coming up. Enjoy November! The Kemptown Rag Team info@kemptownrag.co.uk www.kemptownrag.co.uk Cover picture: Anne Dennington www.annedennington.co.uk

Meet a local resident who champions the arts...

Kemptown Person... Kevin Rance Kevin Rance lives on Marine Parade in Kemptown and is a trustee of the Brighton & Hove Arts Council. How long have you lived in Kemptown? September was my 20th anniversary having moved to Marine Square in 1999 and later near Eaton Place. What do you most like about the area? The pubs and the people. You’ll always meet someone you know although the ones that stop only want to talk to the dog; unless I owe them money. We’ve so much on our doorstep and it’s decidedly un-corporate. I grew up in the dull, grey outskirts of London so to have the variety of pubs, restaurants and independent, quirky shops at hand is a blessing (pianos, reptiles and oriental art within a few metres?). I’m impressed by the way Kemptown evolves; I can name four pubs which, in my time, have been the best in town; they wax and wane. Remember Mondays at the Dragon with live music and mutton curry? Sadly gone, but the Fallen Angel and Saint George’s have risen from their previous

guises which I steadfastly avoided. The range of food places, especially now that Kemp Spices has been replaced. We just need someone to take over the old Cook premises – wine bar perhaps? What does the Brighton & Hove Arts Council do? BHAC has been going for 45 years (we pre-date Arts Council England) and supports ‘not-for-profit’ art with 80 member groups spanning all forms. You may know our Arts Diary which bulges with events; many free and usually not expensive. We’re all volunteers looking after different strands – poetry is mine. Do you have a background in the arts yourself? Alas not, you could pour the sum total of my artistic talent into half a thimble and still have room for your finger. I have always been an active observer; gigging from a young age, adding theatre etc later on. It’s ironic that recently Slade were on at the Concorde as they were my first big gig at Earls Court in 1973: two pounds – extortionate! Have you got any events coming up? This year’s poetry competition is just finishing but the Poetry Festival looms in November. Hollie McNish has agreed to headline along with several other talents. Then we’ve the Drama Awards in December and Art Exhibition in April. We’re considering a young musicians festival in the future. For more information visit bh-arts.org.uk

16 News from the Friends of St George’s Church...

Friends – looking forward A summer evening in September 2016. A steady stream of people are entering St George's Church to murmurs of surprise and delight: “Who could imagine finding this here in Kemp Town!” Inside, tables are laid with linen and fresh flowers, sparkling glassware beckons from the laden bar. It is the first event of the newly-formed Friends of St George's Church seeking to raise funds to repair this elegant and historic church. Over the years a simple formula has evolved: a stimulating and enjoyable presentation followed by a convivial supper. Many speakers are Brightonbased, well-known and eminent in their field: Phil Grabsky of Exhibition on Screen; Dr Monique Simmonds of Kew Gardens, Ann Wroe of The Economist, Geoffrey Mead, geographer, speaker and tour guide, Dr Martin Knott, architectural historian. Topics ranged from the Brighton Hippodrome from David Fisher, Piero della Francesca from Dr John McKean, Brighton Churches with Dr Sue Berry, and Rewilding with Dr Chris Sandom of the University of Sussex. Some of our popular past performers are returning by request. On Thursday 21st November we have Traditional Music from Afghanistan with John Baily, Veronica Doubleday and Marc Clayton, followed by an Afghan supper. On Thursday 30th January 2020, we will again welcome Alastair Hignell (Higgy) to entertain us with tales of past sporting and reporting, and to tell of the challenges of life in a wheelchair. 25 events have been held so far, with four more booked, ranging from films on artists and composers, lectures on local history and local authors, coach trips to stately homes and glorious gardens, a backstage tour of the Theatre Royal followed by a jolly lunch. In the half-term, we branch out with a treat for all ages - samba drumming with a chance to try your hand at playing along. Now we warmly invite you to join us in making all this happen. We are actively seeking new members for our Friends of St George’s committee. It is a great way to make a host of new friends and marvellous to feel you are developing a vibrant scene in Kemp Town and helping the church maintain its beautiful building. It particularly suits newcomers or those recently retired by providing a fast track to feeling you have a role and that you belong. If this strikes a chord, come along to our next committee meeting and see what you think.

Drop us an email to friendsofstgeorgeschurch@gmail.com or text 07957 811475. Sally Richardson

This article is from local charity Together Co Befriending...

Can you spare an hour to make someone's week? Before her health deteriorated, Linda travelled the world and worked as a letting agent and holistic therapist. Since her disabilities developed, she can only leave the house once a week with assistance. A visit from Rebecca, a Together Co Befriending volunteer, makes a huge difference to Linda’s week.

Rebecca and Linda

Linda: “When I became housebound, my friendships slowly dissolved as we had less and less in common. My befriending volunteer, Bex, is great. She is the only person I see socially. My carers visit daily to help me with my daily routine, but there's no time to chat. Together Co match you with someone who shares your interests. Even an hour a week of friendliness can make a lot of difference to my life." Bex: “Popping round to Linda's for a cup of tea and a catch-up is something I know we both look forward to each week. It’s a mutually beneficial connection.” About Together Co Befriending Everybody should have somebody. We match people with people to create friendships that make life better.

We’ve been doing so for over 20 years. In that time, we’ve seen loneliness eased and lives changed – all through the simple power of human connection. Please get in touch if you can spare an hour a week to visit a neighbour. Call us on 01273 775888 or email: sally.clarke@togetherco.org.uk

News from the council...

Public consultation on graffiti Brighton & Hove City Council have launched a public consultation on their proposals to tackle graffiti. At present the council are only responsible for removing graffiti from their own buildings and council equipment like bins. They are not responsible for removing anything on private property, unless it’s offensive. Cllr Anne Pissaridou, chair of the Environment, Transport & Sustainability committee, said: “Some of the consultation is quite controversial as we’re asking people if they think businesses, private homeowners and landlords should remove graffiti from their buildings or pay the council to do so.” The consultation is open until 15 December at: https://consultations.brighton-hove.gov.uk/rubbishrecycling-and-streets/graffiti-removal-enforcementconsultation/ Please send your local articles to info@kemptownrag.co.uk or call 01273 551021

The latest column from Catherine Considine...

Heave Ho Ho Ho A snapshot: Five people, arms held high, sway in frenzied unison to “We are the Champions”. They pass a small silver trophy between them, occasionally flinging an arm around their neighbour, until the chorus swells once more and instinctive triumph forces their hands up high again. The universal signal for winner. A conversation: A commanding woman in full St John’s Ambulance garb smiles the polite smile of a woman who – despite her best intentions – can’t quite comprehend. “But you don’t know each other? You didn’t meet until today?” One hour earlier: Five people line up in front of an ambulance. Pinky at the front, they agree, she’s small. Muscle at the back. Hairy and Minty oblige. Their task is to pull the fully equipped ambulance 100km along the seafront as fast as they can. As the compère counts down, 10…9…8…7…, their bodies tense in fierce, competitive anticipation. 3…2…1…GO!!!! It begins: A gusty, bright Saturday morning on Hove Lawns. Gazebos, a few food trucks and music signal another event. We meet for the first time, five people with one friend in common. Conversation grasps at small, known niceties – How do you know each other? Have you trained? Shall we find a coffee/ register/put on our team tees? The Tees: She pulls them from her rucksack like a magician pulling infinite rainbows from a hat. Pink, yellow, red, mint-green and indigo. Our friend has printed team names on each one: we are Pinky, Perky, Hairy, Minty and Dizzy. It is as though a competitive switch has been activated. Our day-today identities surrender to the notion of team. We go to the welcome tent as one and register: we are the Heave Hoes. There must be studies on the bonding power of a team kit, a unifying name, a single purpose. As

Christmas approaches and fractious families gather I wonder if there is something to be learnt. Maybe there is more than a one-note giggle to the Christmas jumper? Perhaps our droopy Santa hats hold shared, snow-glittered magic after all? As for the Heave Hoes, we’ll be running the Santa Dash together in December. And fighting for our title at next year’s St John Ambulance Pull. Maybe you’d like to come and challenge us? In the meantime, dear neighbours – thanks for giggles and love – may the end of the year twinkle peacefully for Team Kemptown. Catherine Considine

William Mills gives tips on looking after houseplants in winter...

Greenfingers During winter one of the greatest challenges our houseplants face is variations in room temperature. Radiators churn out hot dry air causing plants to wilt, and being left outside when frost is forecast can be fatal. Indoor gardeners need to carefully consider where to place each of their plants during the cold season. Best is a spot away from draughts, and where it might get kicked over, such as a passageway, so it can quietly slumber the winter months away left undisturbed. Overwatering needs to be avoided as it can cause the roots to go soggy and subsequently rot, so keeping the soil damp is ideal. The best way to test whether a plant needs watering is getting used to its weight. When the soil is dry lift the pot and judge how heavy it is, and then do the same again after watering it. You will notice the difference. The availability of daylight is always a challenge as we head into winter. Most flowering plants flourish only in

the brightest, south-facing window sills, and only so many will fit into the bay window space, which unfortunately is usually where the room’s radiator is located. Plants which thrive in lower light levels tend to have an abundance of green leaves, like the amazingly tolerant spider plants. These grow all year round in virtually every indoor location. However I enjoy a burst of colourful flowers as they always lift my mood as I hurry past on a dark winter’s morning. My red cyclamen are among my favourites, because although they do test our patience to begin with, once we understand them their flowers are always vibrant and exciting, making the wait for them to open well worthwhile. The image is my stepdaughter Magenta Kate Edwards on a day out in the lovely grounds of Leeds Castle in Kent. After the formality of viewing the castle and its treasures it is fun for visitors to roam outside. The highlight

William visited the gardens at Leeds Castle with his stepdaughter Magenta

for us was the maze, where it’s really possible to get well and truly lost or at least very confused, followed by the underground grotto. The drive back to Brighton across country via Hawkhurst and the A229 was very manageable. William Mills
