A NEW TYPE OF DINER
We offer incredible new versions of food and drink that you might find familiar. We have sodas made in house with some help from our centrifuge machine. They have around one tenth of the sugar of regular sodas. Our cocktails are crafted with loving care using house made essences, bitters and artisanal spirits. Some of our cakes have no added sugar. Some are completely dairy free. We are really proud of our velvety, house made, organic cashew and tiger nut milk blend.
Our coffee has to be tasted to be believed. We only use the best butter, virgin coconut oil (for our many non dairy/vegan creations) and extra virgin olive oil for dressing. Our tea is brewed in clean glass, to the perfect temperature.
Everything we have is completely free of gluten. That's right, everything. Even our house made sourdough, sweet bakes and our buttermilk pancakes. Our aim is excellence as standard. We make super food for super people.

Welcome to The Kemptown Rag! We have details of plenty of events for you this October, including the Ageing Well Festival, where anyone over 50 can try new activities such as FunkFit, many of them free. Other events this month include the Brighton Early Music Festival (many of the concerts are at St George’s Church), Sussex Art Fairs at Brighton Racecourse and a new adaptation of horror novel Frankenstein at The Spire for a Halloween treat. There’s also the launch of a new film club for Kemptown, Kemptown Kinema. Our featured local person is sea swimmer Melodie Tyrer, who is the technical swimming coach for Vindication Swim, a film currently being filmed in Brighton.

Meet a sea swimmer who has trained the lead actor of feature film Vindication Swim...
Local sea swimmer... Melodie Tyrer Melodie Tyrer is an open water swimming coach and part of Brighton Swimming Club. She is the technical swimming director for Vindication Swim, a film currently in production, about Mercedes Gleitze, the first English woman to swim the Channel, who was born in Freshfield Road. The film is directed by 19-year-old Elliott Hasler of Hove. Melodie taught actor Kirsten Callaghan, who plays Mercedes, the technique of a crossChannel swimmer. How did you get interested in open water swimming? I’ve loved the water since before I could walk and been a swimmer since I was 7 years old; I got into it because I suffered with debilitating asthma (it strengthens your lungs). Despite growing up on the Australian coastline it wasn’t until moving to Brighton that I became really engrossed in it (my history is in pool competitions). I really missed the ocean and having a few friends at the club really helped me maintain a regular level of commitment and saw me become a little obsessed. Do you swim throughout the winter? Yes, I swim all year round (no gloves, no boots, no wetsuit), in fact I prefer the winter - there is something magical about cold water and an empty beach; it’s just you and nature at her best. Was it difficult to teach Kirsten to swim like a crossChannel swimmer? Not at all, she took to the water immediately and followed my instructions incredibly well - she is a true pro! It’s always challenging to teach people new habits (or help them break old ones) but I can’t compliment Kirsten highly enough, she was an excellent student. You are also involved in beach cleaning. Tell us more about that... When you spend so much time in nature you really begin to understand how important it is: to our mental and physical health, to the health of the planet and to all the species we share it with… wanting to protect your home and space is an integral part of being human. The sea is my home, of course I want to protect it from ocean acidification, from plastic pollution, from rising temperatures that are killing sealife - when you break down the science it’s all connected to our plastic addiction (and more so our wasteful attitude towards it).
What do you think we should be doing to tackle pollution in the sea? I could talk on this topic for days, there are so many little things we can do but the most important thing to remember is that you don’t need to be perfect to change the world, you just need to do your best. If that means cutting down on your plastic use, then great! If it means getting involved in grass roots activism, excellent! Start with your local community and remember that we’re all in this together - so if you see some litter on the beach or in the street, pick it up; you’re just as bad as the person who dropped it if you ignore it. An exploration of 700 years of music...
Brighton Early Music Festival 2019 Ensemble
25th October to 10th November The 2019 programme for the Brighton Early Music Festival is all about change and changing times. Taking ‘Metamorphosis’ as its theme, the festival, which focuses on music written before 1800, presents 35 events in 11 different venues across Brighton, Hove and beyond this autumn and winter. From concerts for pre-schoolers (insect costumes optional!), a community ceilidh and music from Handel’s oratorios to medieval music with a trance-style light show, there’s sure to be something for everyone. There are several daytime events on offer and all venues are easily accessible by public transport. St George’s Church hosts visiting Italian ensemble La Fonte Musica (26 October), as well as two staged works – Ceruleo’s Burying the Dead: a music theatre piece capturing London as seen through the eyes of Henry Purcell (31 October); and Fieri Consort’s play with music exploring the life of celebrated Venetian composer Barbara Strozzi (1 November). This October sees the launch of a new pop-up film club for the Kemptown and East Brighton community. Easy Rider
Brighton Lions’ 2019 fireworks display will be held at Brighton Racecourse on Sunday 3rd November.
Hosting the best in cult classics and recent independent releases from across the world, Kemptown Kinema will provide a space to bring the local community together through a shared love of cinema. The first screening takes place on Sunday 27th October at The Latest Music Bar, 14-17 Manchester Street, Brighton, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the iconic 1960s road movie Easy Rider. Starring the late Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper and featuring Jack Nicholson, this classic film has come to immortalise the free-spirit nature of 60s counter culture. A great event for art lovers this October...
Sussex Art Fairs (East) Brighton Racecourse, Freshfield Road, Brighton BN2 9XZ Following the success of our first event in May, our second event Sussex Art Fairs (East) takes place at Brighton Racecourse overlooking the coastline of Brighton, where 125 artists, galleries and collectives will come together to exhibit and sell 1000s of affordable artworks starting from £50 for prints and smaller works to over £5,000 for an outstanding masterpiece. Taking place over three days, the event starts from 6pm on the Friday 'Preview Evening'. Visitors will be able to chat with the artists and gallery owners whilst browsing their favourite artworks with drinks from our full bar and be the first to view exhibitors' beautiful collections. The fair will then be open all weekend for visitors to find something to suit every budget and every type of art buyer.

Dance for Parkinson’s Dance for Parkinson’s Brighton, a community-run dance group, has been awarded £5,270 in National Lottery funding. There are over 600 people with Parkinson’s in Brighton and Hove. Research has shown that dance can be very beneficial for people with Parkinson’s - it can improve motor skills, balance, cognitive difficulties, walking performance and mental health issues. A strong rhythmic tempo and imagery is used in the choreography of the class to provide external cueing that bypasses the neural pathways that are affected by Parkinson’s.
The class is run by two trained dance artists, supported by local volun-
teers. The volunteers also provide refreshments at the end of the class. Parkinson’s can be a cause of isolation so this social aspect of the class is extremely important. We meet weekly on Wednesdays at 11.30am at Dorset Gardens Methodist Church, Kemptown. We want to encourage more of the Parkinson’s community to join the class and enjoy the benefits it offers. Brighton Science at Half-Term WonderFest: Saturday October 26th, all day at Brighton Racecourse Hands-On Half-Term: Sun Oct 27 to Sun Nov 3, workshops all day in central Brighton One thing is certain: after Brexit we'll be needing to train home-grown scientists like never before, to fill the space left by our dearly departed European friends. This should provide a massive stimulus to home-grown scientists. But though schools do their best to teach STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths), it isn’t going to happen if the parents aren't interested. Contrariwise it will be given a huge boost if the parents get involved. Parental engagement can take strange forms. At one of our Family Fun days I watched a big man enter the room with his two young children and survey the turmoil around him. Hove Park Upper School was heaving with a thousand mums, dads and kids, playing with 60 different kinds of science delight. In this particular room the challenge was to build a bridge
Parental control across a 40cm gap strong enough to support as many Mars bars as possible, using only four sheets of paper. Dad’s eyes lit up. He said, “Stand aside kids. This one’s for me.” For the next 15 minutes he was immersed in the task; his children on either side looked at him as if to say, “but… you’re a dad, not an engineer.” As I watched I didn’t worry that the kids were being ignored. I knew that they were going to be engineers when they grew up. Why? Because as soon as they got a chance they would imitate Dad. Imitation is the key to career. What the parents enjoy, that’s what the kids will enjoy. Indeed, after a few minutes they were working on their own bridges, unprompted. Trust me on this; I'm a scientist. The evidence is there in every animal study: baby creatures, who plop onto the planet unable to tell good from bad – what works and what hurts - learn all this by watching the parents and doing the same. It's actually automatic. Swarming over half term at the end of October will be a battalion of science communicators, eagerly engaging with an army of kids.
