A NEW TYPE OF DINER
We offer incredible new versions of food and drink that you might find familiar. We have sodas made in house with some help from our centrifuge machine. They have around one tenth of the sugar of regular sodas. Our cocktails are crafted with loving care using house made essences, bitters and artisanal spirits. Some of our cakes have no added sugar. Some are completely dairy free. We are really proud of our velvety, house made, organic cashew and tiger nut milk blend.
Our coffee has to be tasted to be believed. We only use the best butter, virgin coconut oil (for our many non dairy/vegan creations) and extra virgin olive oil for dressing. Our tea is brewed in clean glass, to the perfect temperature.
Everything we have is completely free of gluten. That's right, everything. Even our house made sourdough, sweet bakes and our buttermilk pancakes. Our aim is excellence as standard. We make super food for super people.

Kemp Town Odeon
The Kemp Town Odeon cinema in St George’s Road, on the corner of Paston Place, shortly before reopening on 26 December 1940 after bomb damage. 55 people were killed in the bomb attack on 14 September 1940, including four children and two adults within the building. The cinema was built in 1934 and operated until 1960. The building was then used as a bingo hall and as a social centre for the Bethany Fellowship before its demolition in 1986 when it was replaced by Cavendish Court sheltered accommodation. News from the council...
Council begins removing weeds The council has begun an extensive weed removal programme after pledging to become a pesticide-free city. A team of eight will join existing staff who are already touring the city to remove weeds by hand and with tools as the council reduces the use of toxic herbicide glyphosate and explores new weed control technology. The council has been aware of the amount of weeds in the city, but has waited until the growth has developed before taking steps. The team has already cleared the Bristol Estate of weeds as well as deep cleaning the pavements, and has moved onto other areas in the city. A major step forward to becoming pesticide-free Cllr Anne Pissaridou, chair of the council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability (ETS) committee, said: “Stopping the use of glyphosate is a major step forward in making sure the city, its residents, wildlife and environment are all pesticidefree. It will always be the case that stopping the use of pesticides will mean more weeds, but this new team will control growth in the short-term while we investigate the use of new technologies including hot foam and infra-red technology.” Council taking expert advice The council is working closely with the Brightonbased Pesticide Action Network, experts in how to become pesticide-free. A plan is being developed to end the use of the toxic weed killer in all the city’s parks, open spaces, pavements, verges and housing land within three years. Cllr Pissaridou added: “We have already started to reduce the amounts of glyphosate used in city parks, housing land and public highways. However, we believe we can accelerate the reduction in use.”
The harmful effects of glyphosate Glyphosate, commonly known by its original trade name Roundup, is a toxic herbicide and the world's most widely sold weed killer. But many experts, including Pesticide Action Network and the Soil Association, believe it causes cancer in humans while destroying the environment and wildlife. A report will go to the next ETS committee in October. In the meantime no glyphosate will be used in the city’s parks while the impact is monitored and alternative solutions are trialled. Residents who would like excessive weeds removed from public land can contact Cityclean on 01273 292929 or email cityclean@brighton-hove.gov.uk.

An oral history project by Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals Trust...
Hospital memories wanted to make medical history Sussex residents are invited to share their memories - both as staff and patients - for the final phase of a heritage project co-ordinated by Strike a Light - Arts & Heritage and Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals (BSUH). Researchers at Strike a Light – Arts & Heritage are appealing for current and former employees of hospitals run by BSUH to help create an oral archive and exhibition. Participants will be asked about their memories of the five BSUH hospitals, including the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Sussex Eye Hospital and Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital. From this group, up to 50 people will be invited to record their stories to represent a wide range of memories. Oral history project manager Nicola Benge says: “We are interested to hear about training, about the social life of hospitals, of hierarchies and comradeship. We want to know about changes in the way that patients are treated, medical and

technical innovations, in care and also, possibly, in difficulties or struggles. We very much want to collect the hitherto unrecorded or neglected story, for hospitals are more than bricks and mortar.” Volunteers will collect photographs, newspaper clippings, documents, letters and photos of keepsakes, as well as family tales passed down to help them build a clear picture of what life was really like, with support from project partners, specialist academics, local authority employees and archivists, as well as young people, older groups, participants and project staff. The stories will be sustainably recorded and form a new oral archive at the hospital Library and Knowledge Service after March 2020. There will also be an exhibition at Jubilee Library from 5th-21st September, with a vox pops memories collection session from 10am-3pm on Saturday 7th September. Although Brighton General is not run by BSUH, its historical ties with other hospitals mean that the researchers are interested in hearing memories associated with that hospital, too. Anyone interested in participating should contact: Nicola Benge (Project Manager), Strike a Light - Arts & Heritage, Studio 8, Open Market, Marshalls Row, Brighton BN1 4JU, or email: strikealight@rocketmail.com For further information go to strikealight.org

Free PSA tests organised by Brighton Lions at Bishop Hannington Church...
Free PSA test for prostate problems The PSA test is a blood test that measures the amount of prostate specific antigen (PSA) in your blood. PSA is a protein produced by normal cells in the prostate and also by prostate cancer cells. It’s normal to have a small amount of PSA in your blood, and the amount rises as you get older and your prostate gets bigger. A raised PSA level may suggest you have a problem with your prostate, but not necessarily cancer. Brighton Lions, in conjunction with the Prostate Cancer Support Organisation, are holding a PSA testing session on Saturday 28th September 2019 at Bishop Hannington Church, Nevill Avenue. The test involves a trained nurse taking a blood sample which is sent to a hospital laboratory for analysis. The tests are free to men aged 45-80. Book an appointment online at www.psatesting. org/events/hove or, if you cannot book online, call 0845 650 2555.
