Welcome to April... It’s that lovely time of the year when the days start getting longer, the temperatures start rising and there is a burst of new life in our gardens and in Stoneham Park. And on the topic of Stoneham Park we have an update from the Friends of Stoneham Park this month. Have a read of page 5. We were delighted to hear about the amazing response from the local community to last month’s appeal for local people to help with some companionship for a old aged local lady. Thank you all so much and there is a short letter of thanks on page 7. We have a local 15 year old author featured on page 13 with her first novel as well as lots of other bits and bobs that we hope you find interesting. We wish you all a very happy Easter and hope you have a nice refreshing break for a few days. Have a great April!! Here is a report received from the Friends of Stoneham Park...
Stoneham Park isn’t just for Christmas… it’s for all the year round!
If you came to our festive market in December - as a visitor or participant - you’ll know what a stonking success it was. We had Santa and Shetland ponies, face-painting and foodie treats, crafts and creativity … plus some great gift ideas to snap up for Christmas. I went home with hand-made fingerless gloves, two Mexican wrestling masks, ethnic tree decorations, spicy Turkish dips and a loaf of Stoneham bread. Friends of Stoneham Park (FoSP) aim to hold more events in 2015. Summer isn’t summer without our Fayre and we’d love to add Easter to our events calendar. But only if you can help by giving us some of your spare time. You’d be up for that, wouldn’t you? Our events aren’t held simply to offer the neighbourhood a fun day out. We also hope to raise funds for vital improvements to the park. If you’re a regular visitor, you’ll know that there’s always work to be done to enhance facilities and spruce the place up. The FoSP team is 100 per cent committed to the com-
munity – and to the task. But we have busy lives and the very nature of volunteering means that we can’t all be involved all the time. A bigger pool of Friends would mean that we could share the planning, the organising, the hands-on work … and the fun. The more, the merrier! If you’d like to join us, you’d be very welcome. If you have any special skills (design, grant applications, putting up gazebos, painting faces, whatever …), we’d love to have you on board. If you can only help on the day of an event, your input and spare pair of hands would be hugely appreciated. So … please get in touch and join the team. Without you, we can’t make our park an even better resource for the community. Contact us via our Facebook page or at: friends.of.stoneham.park@gmail.com Sue Teddern on behalf of Friends of Stoneham Park.

West Hove Forum: Healthy Neighbourhood Fund Grants Allocated

The West Hove Forum has recently allocated Healthy Neighbourhood Fund grants to the following local groups: •
Stoneham Bakehouse were allocated £265 towards funding workshops with Happitots Pre-School.
•
Hove Civic Society will receive £250 for their street tree fund.
•
The Aldrington Social Group will get £150.
•
The Sundowners Club have been allocated £500 to fund coach trips.
•
The Vallance Social Club was granted £350.
We received many applications, so some groups have unfortunately missed out. However, further funding should be available in a few months. westhoveforum@gmail.com
The official race starter for this year’s Brighton Marathon is Jo Pavey, the women’s 10,000m gold medal winner from last year’s European Championships. She will be at the Mass Start in Preston Park at 9.15am. The elite runners will be starting in Withdean Park. There will be a stage in Preston Park throughout the morning, with music and information. The Marathon will be preceded by a 10k race, starting at 8.30am also in Preston Park. The race ends at Madeira Drive, with the first of the elite runners expected to finish at around 11.25am. There will be a Beach Village on the beach adjacent to the finish line, containing charity marquees, bars, food, giant screens and a chill-out zone with deckchairs and picnic benches. Visit www.brightonmarathon.co.uk for more information and live updates on the race.
Thank you to Poets’ Corner residents from Claire Sharp Last month we featured Emily Sharp, who has lived in Kendal Road since 1916. Here is a letter we have received from her grand-daughter: Dear Poets’ Corner residents, It was heartening to get such a positive response to my request for help for my grandmother, Emily. It makes me so happy to know that the community spirit is alive and well in Sussex. I have responded to everyone personally but would like to publicly thank everyone who got in touch. Emily no longer feels isolated in her own neighbourhood. Thank you, Poets’ Corner. Claire Send your letters to info@poetspages.co.uk or Sussex Magazines, 10 Hollingbury Road, Brighton, East Sussex. Another in a series of recipes for children...
CookeryDoodleDoo recipe Jess is a teacher from Cookery Doodle Doo, who organise children’s cookery classes and parties across the UK. With lessons on everything from edible Flowerpot Cheesecakes to healthy home-cooked meals, there is always a fun new activity for the children to get stuck into.
Hot Cross Muffins
Jess runs preschool and afterschool classes at Pelican on Portland, a great new café on the Portland Road. The classes are suitable for fussy eaters and messy bakers alike and after preparing the food, parents get a chance to relax in the café as the food cooks and the children use the playroom. Preschool classes (ages 2½ to 4) run on Mondays from 1011.30am and 1-2.30pm, Tuesdays 10-11.30am. Classes are £7 per child or £12 for two siblings, including a recipe card to take away. Reductions apply for people who book a half term course. Afterschool club (age 3-10; school-aged children can be left during the food preparation) runs on Mondays from 3.30-5pm. Classes are booked as half termly courses at £7 per child per lesson. Children can try a paid taster class before committing. Classes can be booked online at: www.cookerydoodledoo.com or through Jess on: 07970 997224.

Meet some of the Poets Corner people living in your community...
Poets People...
Local Author: Neve Pearce 15-year-old Neve Pearce, who lives in Sackville Road and is a student at Hove Park School, has just had her first novel published – State of Sleep. Tell us more about your book... It’s a short dystopian story about a boy called Frank who wakes up in hospital after a terrorist attack in the underground but his life has changed since he has woken and he soon finds that he cannot trust anyone any more. Not his family, friends or even the police watching him in the streets. Did you find it easy to write? The book took a lot longer to write, mainly because of school, but when I started the real writing process, after months of planning, I found it really exciting and easy as time went on. However, I did find editing the book to be the hardest part of the entire process because I had become too attached to the words I had written and found it hard to cut bits out that weren’t needed. I got
over this with the help of Lee McGeorge, a writer who has been mentoring me with the book. Do you plan to make a career out of writing novels? I would love to. In fact, I have started the planning for another book very different from this one. I’d like to start some kind of fantasy or sci-fi novel but this time spending a lot longer to write and edit it as I felt that State of Sleep was a little rushed. What do you like about living in Poets’ Corner? I like the community and the architecture. “State of Sleep” by Neve Pearce is published by Speartip. It is available as a free download on iPad, Kobo and Nook devices directly and from the website: www.smashwords.com.
Story behind the street name...
Sackville Road
Hangleton Manor by Frederick Earp, © Royal Pavilion & Museums, Brighton & Hove
Sackville Road, formerly known as Hove Drove, takes its name from a family of very rich land-owners – the Sackvilles. A branch of the family still owns Knole House in Kent, one of England’s largest houses.
56a Boundary Road, Hove BN3 5TD
01273 424444
Sir Richard Sackville (c1507-1566) has a Brighton & Hove bus named after him. He was a Sussex MP and cousin of Anne Boleyn. He was knighted in 1549 and became Lord Lieutenant of Sussex in 1550. The Sackville family lived in Hangleton Manor – now a pub – for more than 300 years from 1601.

Concerned about your home being sold to fund your future care fees? The Issue
You probably own your home as joint tenants if you are a couple and solely if you are single. For couples this means you own it wholly, jointly and severally. Ultimately therefore you do not own it 50:50 as you might have assumed. You actually own all of it together and when one partner dies the surviving partner owns it solely and absolutely. It is sole and absolute ownership that enables a property to be taken into consideration as an asset by the local authority and puts the property in danger of needing to be sold to fund care.
The Reality
The Law (C.R.A.G - charging for residential accommodation guide) allows local authorities to assess your assets to determine if you need to pay for your own care. Currently if you have assets above £23,250, you are on your own and require care, you will probably have to pay for it all - currently averaging around £800 per week. Savings, cash and income would be used first and then your property would need to be taken into consideration. You would be expected to pay for all of your care until such time as your assets were depleted to below the £23,250 threshold. You would then pay for a proportion of your care until your assets were below £14,250 - at which point all your future care would be paid for.
The Solution
For couples, simply by changing the way you own your property well in advance of any care considerations i.e from joint tenants to tenants in common and by setting up two Trusts within a properly structured Will at the same time will in most cases, prevent your home from being taken into account by the local authority altogether should you ever require care in the future.
The children and/or whoever else is also nominated as Trust beneficiaries for that particular Trust will subsequently have access to that half of the property when the surviving partner dies. The first half of the property then is 100% securely in Trust for the beneficiaries and will not be at risk. As a result of this simple strategy the survivor is protected from having to sell the property to pay for their care should they need it because it is not possible to sell just their half of the property and the Crag guidelines clearly state that the market value of half a property is £0. The second half of the property will then ultimately go into Trust for access by the nominated beneficiaries when the surviving partner eventually dies. The beneficiaries will at that stage have both halves safe and secure in Trust and will be able to share and dispose of the property according to the wishes of the settlors (the original owners of both halves). By leaving 1/2 the property into Trust on first death, the surviving partner can still sell the property to downsize if they wish and are not restricted in any way with regards to what they wish to do to or with the property - it simply means that it is safeguarded and therefore will definitely be able to be appointed to the chosen beneficiaries when the time comes. For sole owners immediately conveying at least half of your property into Trust well in advance of any care consideration and becoming a Trustee and primary beneficiary of the Trust with others nominated to become beneficiaries after your death is usually enough to take away the risk of the property being considered as an asset to be sold if care is required as the property is not absolutely owned by yourself anymore and again it is not possible to sell half a house or force a Trustee to do something that is not in the ultimate best interest of the Trust beneficiaries. Call us now on 01273 911142 for a friendly chat about how this strategy could be of real benefit to you and your family.
For sole owners the process is simply to set up a Trust now and convey at least 1/2 of your property into it which will produce the same result.
The Reasoning
When you own your home as tenants in common you actually own half each. When the first partner dies, they leave their half into their trust. The surviving partner is the Trustee of that Trust and also the primary beneficiary which means that they have complete control over the property and what happens to it.

Diets – they do not work and are more likely to create imbalances, nutrient deficiencies and misery than make you lose weight – most people I see in my practice have tried them all and put the weight back on – plus more. Sugar-free foods and drinks are not good for anyone, particularly children. They are laden with sweeteners and chemicals that often lead to digestive issues and will wreak havoc on your blood sugar, leading to more sweet cravings, weight gain, low energy. Low-fat foods. These contain higher levels of sugar, fillers, salt and chemical flavourings, which will be far more damaging than a serving of good butter. Fat is bad for you. Not all fats are evil – in fact, butter, coconut, lard, goose and duck fats are good

sources of energy and add satisfaction to a meal rather than leave you wanting more. Oily fish, raw nuts and seeds, avocados, unheated olive and other vegetable/nut/seed oils should be part of a healthy (and tasty) meal. Use the spreads, margarines and other man-made foods to oil your bike chains. Sugar makes you fat – not fat. Want to improve your health and energy fast? Replace sugar with raw unpasteurised honey and witness how much more energy, glowing skin, better fitting clothes will suddenly happen to you! If you need more space in your house you may well be interested in this...
Look up! And get more space at home for just £325 We’d all like more room at home. But not everyone can afford to move or extend. So what if there was a way to get extra space for just a few hundred pounds, ready to use in less than a day? In truth, that space is already there. It’s just not being used to its full potential. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited on rare occasions; a precarious scramble across dusty beams with torch in hand, grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of the floorspace in an average home. So shouldn’t we be making the most of it? And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton six years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making our lofts easily accessible. The latest MTLL franchise is based in Brighton and is run by skilled local Patrick Aherne who says the company’s no-frills approach is what most people are looking for. “We’re not selling £15,000 loft conversions,” says Patrick. “This is a low-cost and simple alternative. For just £277 + VAT you can get a ladder that slides easily up
and down, as well as a proper light and some boarding to make the space safe and secure. We can also fit a draft-proof loft hatch if required from only £55.” The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call-out charges. Patrick provides a free guarantee on all parts and labour too. For a free survey and quotation with no obligation, contact More Than Loft Ladders now! The latest gardening article written especially for Poets Corner gardeners...
Poets Gardens and Patios – Shady Corners Even though the days are getting longer and there are lots more sunny days, many urban spaces are shady and it can be easy to ignore them; however, here are a few ideas to brighten up the darkest corners. Hostas: These are considered the queen of foliage plants and there are hundreds of varieties to choose from. They all make excellent container plants. For the lushest growth, feed the plants regularly with a seaweed extract (tomato feed will do). Ferns: All ferns thrive in shade – most are plants of damp woodland or cool rock faces. A big plus with ferns is they are mostly slug-proof. Water regularly and in summer plant some bright begonias into the container to give some colour. Japanese maple: For a large pot or container, these small trees will look lovely almost all year round. They also need regular watering and protection from high winds, but are happiest out of direct sunlight. Helleborus: These plants have large leaves and bellshaped flowers. They flower early on in the year and

the largest leaves should be removed to show off the blooms to their best and encourage them to flower for longer. Establish them now for a brilliant display in February next year. Busy Lizzie: Another favourite and these thrive in shade too. Fuchsia: Choose a hardy fuchsia and it can stay outdoors for the whole year. The less hardy varieties can look good in hanging baskets, but will need to be stored away from frosts over winter and brought out again in spring. Camelia: This early flowering shrub will give plenty of blooms if watered well and in a large container. If the blooms look a little brown and drop off quickly, it needs more water. Deadhead them regularly and prune immediately after flowering to ensure next year’s blooms. A guide for other shade-loving plants is to look at the leaves. If they are shades of purple and mauve they will like the shade. There are many varieties of these plants in the many garden centres in Brighton and the surrounding area. They often have tall spears of blooms from spring until autumn, but they can break easily. If they are situated on a windy corner you may need to stake them, or shelter them with other plants such as ferns. Bring some interest and life into those shady corners now. I am sure you won’t regret it. Gardening Joi - qualified horticultural gardener. Call 07803 704934 or email joijones3@gmail.com
