Welcome to Poets Pages... Synonymous with hot summers is an Ashes series against Australia. At the time of writing England are one up but the Ozzies are hitting back at the beginning of the second. Hopefully you are reading this with England in a commanding position in the series. We have lots of good wholesome Poets Corner content for you this month. We are delighted to feature another of your local councillors on page 5. Also featured in this issue is one of your local PCSOs on 13. We also have an article on a local micro brewery that you may find interesting. We hope you find some things of interest in this edition. The second in a series of interviews with all the local councillors in Poets’ Corner…

Meet Westbourne Councillor Tom Bewick Tom was elected in May as a Labour councillor for Westbourne ward and is Chair of the council’s Children, Young People and Skills Committee. Do you live in the West Hove area? Yes, I live in Pembroke Gardens, very close to the Hove Museum – the heart of my ward. Tell us a bit about your background… I moved to the city in 2007 when my children started to arrive. For a while, I commuted up to London, where I was chief executive of a national charity helping young people access training and apprenticeships. I grew up in foster care and left school initially with no qualifications. I’m really passionate about education and the fact skills can help transform lives. After night school, I went to university and I’ve been lucky to work with some amazing people who have given me a career break, including Tony Hall, the director general of the BBC. In the last decade I’ve set up several successful organisations. I’ve worked as an adviser in education for several international bodies like the World Bank and various governments, including five visits to Afghanistan.

Hove Beach Croquet Club is a relaxed, informal, friendly club for anyone who would like to watch, learn or play croquet. Visitors are welcome, children are welcome, there is a great cafe and a bar. We have regular barbeques and there are plenty of deckchairs. Opening Times At weekends in good weather the pitches will be set up by 12 noon. We could be playing until sundown. On weekdays, ask in the café at the Bowling Club. www.hovebeachcroquetclub.co.uk Facebook: Hove Beach Croquet Club Twitter: @hovecroquet

Why did you want to become a councillor? I was getting really frustrated with the way the Greens were running the city. It made me realise just how important it is for politicians to be competent at running things and how much residents want to see a council focussed on getting the basics right. What do you hope to achieve in the area? I’m really proud of my local community. But families are feeling the pressure on household budgets and school places. I think it is critical that the council transforms the way it delivers services while keeping council tax increases to a minimum. My big passion is ensuring Ofsted rates every school in the city good or outstanding and that we eliminate long-term youth unemployment. What are your interests outside politics? I love my partner and three children, English history, travelling and cricket. If I ever went on Mastermind, my specialist subject would be the life and times of King Richard I, aka Coeur de Lion. How can people contact you? I’ve set up a ward website as part of my commitment to be accessible digitally to residents 24/7, at: www.westbournehove.org or contact tom.bewick@brighton-hove.gov.uk I also write a blog, Westbourne News, every month.

An easy way to remember the basic steps to manage strains and sprains…

Focus on Physiotherapy

Immediate Treatment – ‘PRICE’ Focus On Physiotherapy – People often phone me after injuries like a sprained ankle, twisted knee or jarred elbow. Much of the advice I give before I see a patient is based on the mnemonic PRICE: Protect, Rest, Ice, Compress and Elevate. Protect the injury. This might involve a brace, a crutch, a sling or taping the area. This avoids undue stress and so allows the healing process to start. Rest the injury. Simply not moving the injured limb lessens blood flow which leads to reduced swelling and stress for the injury. Ice the injury. Just a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a damp towel usually helps, as cold reduces tissue temperature which constricts the blood vessels, which in turn limits bleeding, swelling, bruising and pain. Compress the injury. Carefully applied compression can help prevent swelling and so reduce the formation of scar tissue, leading to a quicker recovery. Elevate the injury. This lowers the blood pressure in the limb which limits bleeding and aids fluid drainage, both

of which will help reduce swelling. Whatever the injury, applying PRICE should both reduce recovery time and make the recovery less painful. Poets’ Corner Past… Arthur Street Chapman’s Carpet Beating and Cleaning Works, later also a laundry, at 1 Arthur Street. There is no sign of the chimney beyond the railway line, built in 1903 for the Hove Electric Light Co. The photograph may have been taken soon after the building was erected in 1895. Joe Higgins is the Police Community Support Officer for the Wish area and we asked him about his work.

Local PCSO - Joe Higgins How long have you been a PCSO? I began working for Sussex Police in July last year, and have been in neighbourhood policing since September 2014. What is the best part of your job? The best part of working for Sussex Police is working on resolving issues within the community that are having a detrimental effect to residents, whether it be a person or family who are perpetrators for anti-social behaviour or someone who is suffering from severe mental health issues who is, unknowingly, causing major tension within their community. Utilising other agencies, confronting individuals about their behaviour and maintaining a good relationship with victims of crime or anti-social behaviour whilst a problem-solving file is being worked on is the bread and butter of policing that I relish; of course the best part is the finalisation of a matter that has been resolved and updating the victim(s). What are the challenges that you face? The challenges that I, and all police officers around the UK, face is the ever-changing workspace. Sussex Police as a force are undergoing a lot of changes that will change the way everyone works; we are currently trialling a few different ways of working within neighbourhood policing which, at present, have been working well. Although the changes within the force have been swift and challenging we will always make sure that public service is at the top of our agenda. What are your interests outside work? When I’m not out on the beat I like to go to the gym; I also enjoy hiking around some of Sussex’s many areas of natural beauty. Recently, I have also taken up martial arts. How can we help you in your work? • You can help me and my colleagues by reporting crime that is occurring in your area. If you feel that by reporting crime there will be repercussions, Crimestoppers has the facility to report crime anonymously on 0800 555 111; you can also report crime anonymously on their website. • Most of the time, there is a slight issue with a few people not knowing what, or how to report incidents like anti-social behaviour. We are currently trialling a service called Ewatch which is a quarterly newsletter set up by local PCSOs which has some useful contacts. If you are interested in receiving this, please email me on the address below.

How can we contact you (and your Westbourne colleague)? I can be contacted on Joe.Higgins@sussex.pnn.police.uk which is my work email. My colleague, Beth Edge, who is the local PCSO for Westbourne, can be contacted on Bethany.Edge@sussex.pnn.police.uk . If you require anything from crime prevention advice for your business or residence, wish to receive quarterly issues of Ewatch or wish just to have some advice as to what is going on in your area please send us an email, we are happy to help. I stress that incidents cannot be reported via our email addresses. All incidents (whether anti-social behaviour or a crime) need to be reported by calling up 101 for our non-emergency number, 999, or you can report incidents online by visiting the Sussex Police website. We will then pick up the reports and handle the matter. All matters are handled this way because we are not always in the office and may be on annual leave, so no-one would be aware of any issues until we return.

Brought to you by locally based nutritionist Nathalie Sansonetti

Nathalie’s Monthly Health TIP

Give Your Body Thanks I recently had a little (physical) breakdown after burning the candle at both ends – juggling tons of work with kids, travelling a lot, trying to fit in too much exercise – without loading up the right fuels and not taking enough down times. My body literally rebelled and made me stop. Like most, my first reaction was anger and frustration – ‘Oh, but I need to keep going, can’t stop now!’, rather than taking the situation in clearly and recognising the signs for what they were: alarm bells. We take our bodies for granted, abuse them by drinking or smoking too much, not feeding them what they need most of the time, having too much or too little exercise/relaxation, leading depleting stressful lives, and then we get angry when all hell breaks loose. We should be thankful for our bodies’ ability to warn us: after all, headaches/migraines, low immunity, digestive issues, heart and skin problems occur mainly as a result of stress, eating the ‘wrong’ foods, dehydration and…

ignoring the bells. So whenever you encounter any of these warning signs, don’t get angry - take stock! Have you been ‘punishing’ your body with too little water and good nutrients, too much caffeine, alcohol, sugar, ready-made foods/take-aways, smoking, little exercise and no down time? Be thankful when your body stops you – it’s when the alarm bells go quiet (despite the abuse) that we need to worry. Love your wonderful body and have a fantastic summer! 19 If you are looking at a new bathroom or tiles then Eurotiles & Bathrooms over in Brighton is a great place to visit...

A Must Visit Venue for your New Tiles and Bathroom If you’re revamping your bathroom or need tiles for your kitchen or conservatory floor, look no further: Eurotiles & Bathrooms is the one place that you ought to visit. There is a huge selection of tiles ranging in style from large size porcelain ones which are perfect for a modern bathroom or for kitchen, lounge and even patio floors, through mosaics to more traditional 10 x 10cm for kitchens and marble and stone effects for bathrooms. Wood effect tiles are very popular at the moment as the latest technology means that they are virtually indistinguishable from the real thing and they can be used in areas that are prone to damp where real wood would not be suitable, and the showroom has lots of choice of different styles and colours of wood. It is the exclusive stockist of Ca’ Pietra in Sussex giving you access to some fabulous natural stone tiles. There is also a full range of bathroom products on display including furniture, sanitary ware, showers, taps and accessories such as mirrors and heated towel rails. Ege sanitary ware, which comes with a 10-year warranty, is exclusive to Eurotiles & Bathrooms in the UK

and they have other stylish brands such as Burlington and Pura Bathrooms. Most of the range is in stock so you don’t need to plan weeks in advance, you can just come in, choose your products and take them away, or arrange for free local delivery. The Brighton showroom is based on the Freshfields Business Park, near to Screwfix and Benchmarx Kitchens. They offer free parking so you can pull up outside, and knowledgeable, friendly staff to help you decide on the best products for your project. www.eurotilesandbathrooms.com Email: brighton@eurotilesandbathrooms.com; Phone: 01273 605445

There are so many interesting activities in and around Poets Corner...here is another....

UnBarred Brewery West Hove’s Micro-Brewery I’ve lived in Hove most of my life and have settled in Bolsover Road. I started home brewing a few years ago and jumped straight into all-grain brewing and creating my own recipes. After getting great feedback from professional brewers, I started to consider going professional. After a lot of hard work, I managed to register the brewery I built in my garden. I entered my first cask to the CAMRA Sussex Beer Festival 2015 and have just been told I’ve won the Bev Robbins Award (voted best Sussex-brewed beer) for my flagship beer “Benchmark”. It’s an incredible achievement as the last winners were Harveys. I’m now trying to keep up with demand. The brewery has just been doubled in size and will soon be run at its maximum output. The key now is to produce beers
