We were delighted to receive this interview with Emily- who must be about Poets’ Corner’s oldest resident...

Living in Kendal Road for 98 years! Emily Sharp was born in Kendal Road in 1916 and still lives in the same house today! She is possibly the longest-term resident of Poets’ Corner. She told us more about living in Kendal Road. Where did you go to school? Aldrington School and then Portland Road School. I was a bit of a tomboy. I used to protect my brother and even get into fights! I was clever at school but I had to leave at 14 and go to work. My first job was at Palmeira Stores in the chemist’s and then I moved to china and glass. How has Poets’ Corner changed over the years? There were two families in each house when I was young. We had two rooms upstairs and one downstairs. The other family had two down and one up. We knew everyone on Kendal Road. There was one man up the road who had a car! It was a poor area in those days but very respectable. Life was hard. I didn’t have any money left by the end of the week but I didn’t owe anyone anything! What do you like best about living in Kendal Road? All my memories are here. I brought up my son in this house after my husband died in 1941. My parents and brother lived and died in this house. My five grandchil-

dren used to spend their holidays here with me. I like having the shops and buses nearby. I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. Is there anything in the area you would like to improve? Not really but I don’t like the parking restrictions because it’s difficult for my family when they come and visit me. I wish I knew more people locally as my old friends have all died. I don’t know many of the neighbours as people come and go a lot and people are very busy these days. Amazingly, Emily still does her shopping, washing, cleaning and cooking herself, and has resisted her family’s attempts to move her to sheltered housing or to live with them in London. Her family would appreciate if anyone in Poets’ Corner could volunteer as an emergency contact or would occasionally visit Emily for a cup of tea. Please contact her granddaughter, Claire, at Clairewijay@gmail.com if you could help in any way.

Here is an interview with the new vicar from St. Barnabas church...

New Vicar at St Barnabas Church Father Lawrence MacLean has recently begun his new role as vicar of St Barnabas Church in Coleridge Street. We asked him to tell us more… When did you arrive in Poets’ Corner? We arrived in Hove the week before Christmas. We are living in a temporary house whilst we work to restore the vicarage attached to St Barnabas. Once this has happened we shall move again, hopefully in about six months. Where did you work previously? Immediately previously to coming to Hove we lived in north Devon for three years. Prior to that we lived in Florence in Italy for ten years where I was the Chaplain covering all of Tuscany. How does St Barnabas differ from your previous church? St Barnabas is more akin to a city church whereas the churches that I looked after in Devon were rural. The challenges of a city church differ from those in rural communities as they can be less visible. It is our task to be bridge

Father Lawrence and his wife Jacqueline in Rome

builders in the community, to reinforce the Christian presence in this place and to make everyone know that the church in Poets’ Corner is there for them. What are your first impressions of the area? We have been made very welcome in Hove and it is a delight to come and live and worship here. The obvious immediate benefits for us are the wonderful travel connections, easy transit to London and elsewhere. What is the most enjoyable part of your job? I now have two jobs in the diocese. The first is as Vicar of St Barnabas Hove and Priest in Charge of St Andrew’s Hove. The second is Diocesan Adviser for Fundraising & Sustainability. We hear you have a large family… We have four children. Laura is an actress and works in London, James works designing websites for a company outside of Bristol, Flossy works for British Airways and Benjamin is a music scholar at Sherborne School. Jacqueline, my wife, is a Bowen Therapist and looks to expand her business here in Hove. What is your greatest claim to fame? My children, my wife and my family. I am very proud of their wonderful achievements. As a Christian priest, all fame, all honour is due to Jesus Christ. He alone receives the praise. Anything we achieve is only a reflection of the love and grace He has first shown us. A.M.D.G. (ad majorem Dei gloriam) (All for the Greater Glory of God).

Another in a series of recipes for children...

CookeryDoodleDoo recipe Jess is a teacher from Cookery Doodle Doo, who organise children’s cookery classes and parties across the UK. With lessons on everything from edible Flowerpot Cheesecakes to healthy home-cooked meals, there is always a fun new activity for the children to get stuck into. Jess runs preschool and afterschool classes at Pelican on Portland, a great new café on the Portland Road. The classes are suitable for fussy eaters and messy bakers alike and after preparing the food, parents get a chance to relax in the café as the food cooks and the children use the playroom. Preschool classes (ages 2½ to 4) run on Mondays from 1011.30am and 1-2.30pm, Tuesdays 10-11.30am. Classes are £7 per child or £12 for two siblings, including a recipe card to take away. Reductions apply for people who book a half term course. Afterschool club (age 3-10; school aged children can be left during the food preparation) runs on Mondays from 3.30-5pm. Classes are booked as half termly courses at £7 per child per lesson. Children can try a paid taster class before committing. Classes can be booked online at www.cookerydoodledoo.com or through Jess on: 07970 997 224.

Here is an update from The West Hove Forum...

News from the West Hove Forum At our last meeting in Muriel House, Ingram Crescent, the police reported an increase throughout Hove in vehicle crime, as well as an increase in anti-social behaviour in Boundary Road. This is mainly due to street drinkers and the police need more people to report it. Sue Bowes from the council’s Community Safety Team said that anyone witnessing anti-social behaviour by street drinkers should email Equinox, an alcohol outreach service, with details of exactly where and when it is happening. The contact details for Equinox are: Jesse.Wilde@ equinoxcare.org.uk or phone 07779 088518. The Wish Park GP Surgery and a pharmacy are moving into the new development at the former Gala bingo hall site on Portland Road early this year. The Wish Park Surgery Patient Participation Group are concerned that a zebra crossing will not be adequate for the increased numbers of pedestrians anticipated to use the crossing. They proposed to the council that they investigate replacing it with a light-controlled crossing. Cllr Anne Pissaridou put this to a council committee in January. They rejected it. Members of the West Hove Forum were overwhelmingly in favour of a light-controlled crossing and requested that the PCSOs get an idea of how many people are using the zebra crossing near School Road, especially during the school run. The campaign will continue - contact Anne for details. (anne.pissaridou@brighton-hove.gcsx.gov.uk) These community policing priorities were set for the West Hove area: 1. Vehicle crime 2. School run 3. Kingsway vans/parking. Mike Dennis of the Bolsover Road Residents’ Association was pleased to announce that the council had started widening Bolsover Road, which, it is anticipated, will be part of Controlled Parking Zone R from the beginning of March. He thanked the two Wish ward councillors for all

West Hove Forum Chair Ron Gurney their efforts in getting this to go ahead. There will be table-top sales outside Muriel House, Ingram Crescent, from 11am to 1pm, between April and September, on the last Sunday of each month. Brought to you by locally based nutritionist Nathalie Sansonetti

Nathalie’s Monthly Health TIP - Smoothies - Fad or Fab? I’ve seen many health fads and most have come and gone with a loud bang. In contrast, smoothies are a great way to increase energy levels, sort digestive or immunity issues you may have and help shed those extra inches. HOWEVER a few mistakes are commonly made that will botch even the most earnest effort:

Fruit: berries, apples, pears, cherries (no bananas) small handful.

Hold the fruit! Only use a handful of fruit and choose among the most alkalising ones like apples, berries and pears. Fruit is sugar, so keep it off.

Add zing: lemon, lime, ginger or cayenne will help pull iron from your greens and add taste!

Ditch the dairy: No need for sweetened and/or mucousforming yogurt or milk to make your smoothie creamy – replace with coconut milk or half an avocado.

CAUTION: a week of green smoothies may increase impulses to visit the gym/get your running shoes on.

Fats: Yes! add ½ an avocado or 1 tbsp of: linseed oil, chia seeds, almond/cashew nut butter or coconut oil. Protein: keep cravings at bay with a good quality protein powder (without sweeteners)

Chew each mouthful and drink slowly…

Nathalie Sansonetti BA, MA, DNN, mFNTP is a fully qualified Nutritional Therapist practising in various locations in Hove. She can be contacted by email: nathalie@newleafnutrition.co.uk or on 07980 620010 for private consultations & painless and non-invasive food intolerance tests for adults and children. www.newleafnutrition.co.uk

Smoothie, not slush! – Frozen drinks slow down digestion and prevent nutrient absorption. Here’s how to put together a tasty and energy-giving smoothie: Your base: choose coconut water, water or unsweetened dairy alternatives - 150-200ml to taste Vegetable: spinach (with a little sprinkle of lemon), kale, lettuce – 2 handfuls

Here we feature a local charity based in Portland Road....

Running the Brighton Marathon for Speak Out Roger Brownlow is a local man with a learning disability and a visual impairment. This year he will be taking on a massive personal challenge and running the Brighton Marathon to raise money for Brighton and Hove Speak Out who are celebrating their 21st anniversary year in 2015. Brighton and Hove Speak Out is a local charity based in Portland Road providing advocacy services, which means listening to people with learning disabilities and working with them to express their views, have control over their lives and take an active part in the community. Roger has used services at Speak Out and is now a volunteer and a member of a training group who run disability awareness training for council staff. Roger is a seasoned runner already; he trains daily and takes part in the Hove Park Run every Saturday morning. Roger’s weekends are often taken up with the odd 10K race or half marathon and, although he’s no stranger to longer distances, the Brighton Marathon is a new challenge. Roger started running aged 17 when he was living in his home town of Durban, South Africa. Roger says he likes running because “it makes you feel good afterwards”. He competed in many races, starting with short distances and building up to run an ultra-marathon in South Africa which was 52 miles long. An illness forced Roger to give up running for two years, but when he moved to Hove he picked it up again.

Roger will be joined by five other Speak Out runners for the Brighton Marathon: Marc Steene, Tom Barratt, Dan Steene and Christine Chessman.

Roger says, “I am running the marathon this year because I want to raise money for Speak Out.” When asked how his disabilities affect his running, he tells us, “It doesn’t; I just get on with it. I just need to run on even surfaces, so I stick to road running.”
