Meet some of the Poets Corner people living in your community...
Poets Person: Robb Johnson Songwriter and folk singer Robb Johnson lives with his family in Payne Avenue. His song “Winter Turns To Spring” was a favourite of Tony Benn. He has a new album out on 4th May, “Here Goes Nothing”, with his group The Irregulars. What do you most like about living in Poets’ Corner? The George Payne...The Poets’ Corner pub... Aldrington Station...the local post office, Co-op, Down to Earth, Ackerman’s...the foxes…and I like these terraced houses, and being part of a community that’s got a bit of character to it. Is there anything in Poets’ Corner you would like to change? The right-wing politicians who pretend to “represent” it. Particularly those noticeable by their lack of support for the Hands Off Hove Park campaign. Tell us more about your music… Wellllll... I play guitar, not brilliantly but with delight and enthusiasm, and the same is true of my singing. My most successful albums have probably been “Gentle Men”, a song suite about my grandfathers and WW1, and “Margaret Thatcher: My Part in her Downfall”. The Telegraph once called me “one of Britain’s most challenging songwriters” and The Guardian says I am “an English original”. I’m often sort of pigeon-holed as folk music; I’m probably more happy with that than folk music is. What I like about folk is that, like punk, it has a tradition of democracy and inclusion. I hope that’s reflected in Hove Folk Club, which I disorganise on the first Friday of every month at The Poets’ Corner. But I also really like French chanson; I’ve translated several of Brel’s songs into English, and I also like making a huge racket with an electric guitar and the Irregulars, like any other 18 year old (I’m 60 this year). Who is the most famous person to sing one of your songs? Apart from Hullabaloo Choir? Probably my friends Barb Jungr and Roy Bailey. Christy Moore nearly sang one, and Chumbawamba never quite got round to singing one too.

Have you got any local gigs coming up? Usually! There’s the Duke of Wellington, Shoreham, on May 10th, and the whole band (son Arv on drums) at Glastonwick Festival on May 30th. Gigs should appear on the website www.robbjohnson.co.uk (if I remember). How can we get your new album? “Resident” (Kensington Gardens www.resident-music.com) has kindly promised to stock it. Brighton’s record shops – another reason I like living in Poets’ Corner!

Here is an update from The West Hove Forum...
News from the West Hove Forum Police Attendance of West Hove Forum At our last meeting, our local PCSOs reported that they may not always be able to attend the West Hove Forum in the future, as posts are not being replaced and they have to prioritise. This was a cause of concern to forum members. Portland Road Crossing Martin Heath, the Road Safety Team Manager at Brighton & Hove City Council, attended the meeting to explain why the council had decided against a light-controlled crossing in Portland Road, near the new development, to be named Friese-Greene House, on the corner of School Road. The Wish Park Surgery is due to relocate there in June and the surgery’s Patients’ Participation Group (PPG) believes there is a need for a light-controlled crossing, with increased numbers of pedestrians expected. Some people find zebra crossings stressful and unsafe. Martin Heath said that the council had decided instead to upgrade the zebra crossing, widening it and raising it up to footway level, with a new Belisha beacon, so that it will be sufficient for larger numbers of pedestrians. The decision was also affected by funding and design
standards. However, if there are so many pedestrians crossing in the future that the traffic never gets the chance to get through, this could be the catalyst for a light-controlled crossing. A raised crossing means that traffic speeds on approach will have to be lower and if pedestrians show an intention to cross the traffic should stop, whereas with a light-controlled crossing you would have to wait. Journeys to school are safer with a zebra crossing as children don’t tend to press the button and wait, and as a city we have a slightly higher collision rate for a lightcontrolled crossing than for a zebra crossing. Edward Clay, Chair of the Wish Park Surgery PPG, said that the argument about people not waiting can also apply to zebra crossings, which depend on the judgement of the motorist. The next West Hove Forum meeting will be at 2pm on Wednesday 20th May at Churchill House, Hangleton Road. If you would like to attend on behalf of a residents’ association, business or other organisation, email us at westhoveforum@gmail.com or phone the Chair, Ron Gurney, on 01273 385361.

Poets’ Corner Past... Arthur Street
This photograph taken on 8 July 1973 shows numbers 15 to 25 Arthur Street (looking east). These houses were built in the late 1890s for residential use, although many were used as small hand laundries, Arthur Street from the start being notable for this trade. They have since been demolished and replaced with flats.

Artists in residence @ The Hive Artists in residence @ The Hive are showing work by seven women artists brought together by their connections to the community space and café within Stoneham Park. This is our first year as a venue and we are really excited about the space. Zoe Bailey, fine artist, is showing work from her “Vanitas for girls” series. Claire Sheriff, stone carver, is exhibiting figurative sculptures in a range of different stones. Helen Farquharson, photographer, will be showing Sussex landscapes and travel reportage prints. Sophia Passmore will be showing works from a series entitled “Group Dynamics” in thrown and altered earthenware. Crimson Boner will exhibit recent works in oil and print. Fiona Edwards will be exhibiting mirrors surrounded by images and collage encapsulated within glass. Lin Russell, healing cloths using Buddhist mantras and botanical printmaking. There will be an artists’ pop-up shop every weekend of the festival (2nd to 23rd May), 10am to 5pm. The café will be open as usual with its selection of delicious food, and the lovely park is on the doorstep.
EveryBody Needs Bowen Pain...
Interfaith Events Coming To Poets’ Corner In Brighton & Hove there has been an active Interfaith Contact Group (IFCG) since 1997. It is run by volunteers with the aim of promoting friendship between people of different faiths (or no faith), an aim that we feel is all the more important in the light of recent events around the world. The IFCG organises several open events each year, including an Interfaith Service in November marking ‘National Interfaith Week’. The IFCG is reliant upon different faith communities allowing use of their premises for events. In 2015, two events will be taking place in Poets’ Corner at Hove Methodist Church. On Saturday 6 June at 7.30pm, an interfaith concert will take place with the Berakah Players, a group of musicians from various faith backgrounds. Proceeds will go to Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice. Tickets (£12 on the door, £10 in advance, £8 concessions) can be purchased at: www.theberakahproject.org/brightontickets or ring Charlotte Gravestock on 07956 314380. Secondly, there will be an interfaith conference entitled, ‘Conversations about Life and Death’, at Hove Methodist Church on Saturday 31 October, 1pm – 6pm. You can find out more about the IFCG at: www.interfaithcontactgroup.com. We are a friendly crowd and new members are always welcome. Charlotte Gravestock (local resident)

Brought to you by locally based nutritionist Nathalie Sansonetti
Nathalie’s Monthly Health TIP - Spot-light on teens As my little boy officially turns into a teen today, I thought I’d give you some tips on how to meet their nutritional needs at this crucial time in their lives, and address acne in particular. I know a parent’s advice is often ignored or resisted so show your teen(s) the following points so they can take responsibility for their own health: Drink up Drink about 4 pints of still, room temperature water through the day. Forget cola, diet, carbonated drinks, juice, milk and sports drinks full of sugar and chemicals that add to your toxic overload. Eat right Eat sushi, lots of raw nuts and seeds (add 1 tbsp chia and linseeds each into your daily vegetable smoothie - with a little fruit) – use almond/cashew nut butter on your bread, eat fresh salmon, mackerel, sardines, take some krill oil and zinc supplements, eat eggs and lots of green vegetables. Throw in some brown rice, chicken, pulses and houmous…plenty to choose from and no chocolate, coffee or sweets in sight.
Clean your skin Every night with diluted apple cider vinegar (1 tbsp to 300ml water + 5-6 drops of lavender essential oil mixed in) on a cotton pad. Exercise Put your headphones on and head for the park/beach/ pool. Exercise releases ‘feel good’ hormones and oxygenates your cells, which will all help to reduce stress and give your skin a chance to glow! Nathalie Sansonetti BA, MA, DNN, mFNTP is a fully qualified Nutritional Therapist practising in various locations in Hove. She can be contacted by email: nathalie@newleafnutrition.co.uk or on 07980 620010 for private consultations & painless and noninvasive food intolerance tests for adults and children. www.newleafnutrition.co.uk

Here we focus on one of our advertisers - Musical Bumps...
Musical classes for youngsters - Musical Bumps Hello, I’m Belinda and I teach Musical Bumps classes in Brighton and Hove. We offer top quality, friendly music classes to share with babies, toddlers and pre-school children. We use traditional songs and rhymes, musical games and percussion from around the world. Our repertoire is chosen to enable children to learn. The songs and games we use all have a purpose. We like to keep up to date - thus ensuring that Musical Bumps fully supports the EYFS curriculum. We know that children learn best through play - our classes are playful and engaging. We have enough percussion and puppets for everyone to use, as well as colourful resources. We believe that music education for the very young is so important to a child’s wellbeing and development. Music benefits all areas of learning. For example it can support speech and language, social skills, fine and gross motor development, increased confidence, musical skills and much more, all of which is pivotal to a child’s happiness, growth and learning.
Our classes provide the perfect opportunity for you and your child to share an hour of music making and singing whilst having fun. There’s time for refreshments too, giving us all a chance to get to know each other. Come along and see for yourself, book a free taster session and join the class in action. Babies (from newborn), 1 – 2 years, 2 – 3 years, mixed age class. Contact me, Belinda McBride: 07582 256957 belinda.mcbride@musicalbumps.com www.musicalbumps.com

Concerned about your home being sold to fund your future care fees? The Issue
You probably own your home as joint tenants if you are a couple and solely if you are single. For couples this means you own it wholly, jointly and severally. Ultimately therefore you do not own it 50:50 as you might have assumed. You actually own all of it together and when one partner dies the surviving partner owns it solely and absolutely. It is sole and absolute ownership that enables a property to be taken into consideration as an asset by the local authority and puts the property in danger of needing to be sold to fund care.
The Reality
The Law (C.R.A.G - charging for residential accommodation guide) allows local authorities to assess your assets to determine if you need to pay for your own care. Currently if you have assets above £23,250, you are on your own and require care, you will probably have to pay for it all - currently averaging around £800 per week. Savings, cash and income would be used first and then your property would need to be taken into consideration. You would be expected to pay for all of your care until such time as your assets were depleted to below the £23,250 threshold. You would then pay for a proportion of your care until your assets were below £14,250 - at which point all your future care would be paid for.
The Solution
For couples, simply by changing the way you own your property well in advance of any care considerations i.e from joint tenants to tenants in common and by setting up two Trusts within a properly structured Will at the same time will in most cases, prevent your home from being taken into account by the local authority altogether should you ever require care in the future.
The children and/or whoever else is also nominated as Trust beneficiaries for that particular Trust will subsequently have access to that half of the property when the surviving partner dies. The first half of the property then is 100% securely in Trust for the beneficiaries and will not be at risk. As a result of this simple strategy the survivor is protected from having to sell the property to pay for their care should they need it because it is not possible to sell just their half of the property and the Crag guidelines clearly state that the market value of half a property is £0. The second half of the property will then ultimately go into Trust for access by the nominated beneficiaries when the surviving partner eventually dies. The beneficiaries will at that stage have both halves safe and secure in Trust and will be able to share and dispose of the property according to the wishes of the settlors (the original owners of both halves). By leaving 1/2 the property into Trust on first death, the surviving partner can still sell the property to downsize if they wish and are not restricted in any way with regards to what they wish to do to or with the property - it simply means that it is safeguarded and therefore will definitely be able to be appointed to the chosen beneficiaries when the time comes. For sole owners immediately conveying at least half of your property into Trust well in advance of any care consideration and becoming a Trustee and primary beneficiary of the Trust with others nominated to become beneficiaries after your death is usually enough to take away the risk of the property being considered as an asset to be sold if care is required as the property is not absolutely owned by yourself anymore and again it is not possible to sell half a house or force a Trustee to do something that is not in the ultimate best interest of the Trust beneficiaries. Call us now on 01273 911142 for a friendly chat about how this strategy could be of real benefit to you and your family.
For sole owners the process is simply to set up a Trust now and convey at least 1/2 of your property into it which will produce the same result.
The Reasoning
When you own your home as tenants in common you actually own half each. When the first partner dies, they leave their half into their trust. The surviving partner is the Trustee of that Trust and also the primary beneficiary which means that they have complete control over the property and what happens to it.

There is plenty of festival activity in Poets’ Corner this May. Here is news of a local Open House...
Open House -Villa LVI (56 Payne Avenue) Virginie Vincent is opening her house, Villa LVI, for the fifth year to showcase the work of an international group of artists. The theme this time will be flowers, which ties in with spring. 14 artists will be exhibiting there who come from France, Spain, Korea, Japan, China, Israel and Colombia among other countries. “I have been an artist since I was born,” says Virginie, although also previously a business lawyer who worked in the city. She uses ceramics, glass, paint and photography but likes glass the most because it is like painting but it’s free, easier and quicker. She likes three-dimensional art. Virginie says: “I have lived in Poets’ Corner ten years but it was when I started doing the open houses that I created something different. Hove became home with the art and opportunity to exhibit it. I couldn’t see my life without it now. I prepare twice a year, planning in advance, all year round. I meet masses of people. It makes you part of the community.” Rebecca Martin, also exhibiting at Villa LVI, uses polymer

clay to make jewellery, and paper flowers out of music paper. She likes recycling materials and the delicacy of paper. Rebecca says she is not sure she would have developed so much as an artist without the open house: “It changes your life, making art better.” She added: “It is fun meeting other artists and there is more interaction in an open house where visitors can chat informally to the artists; it is better than a gallery.” “And there is no commission,” says Virginie. Villa LVI opens twice every year in May and in December and the theme is always different. Tea and cake will be served in the Mediterranean garden and Chelsea, the cat, sometimes steals the show. Villa LVI and Virginie are also sponsoring Hong Dam who is another Hove artist, telling the story of her journey from refugee in Vietnam to artist. Hong is exhibiting at the Jubilee Library from 15th May as part of the Brighton Fringe. The Villa LVI artists and Hong will be doing some workshops. Details will be posted on their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/VillaLVI - and on the Artists Open Houses website: www.aoh.org.uk More information about all of the artists and examples of their work are available on the bespoke Villa LVI website here: http://www.villalvi.com/ Roz Scott

Why not get involved with something new this Summer...
Hove’s best kept secret - anyone for Croquet? Hove Beach Croquet Club - one of Hove’s best kept secrets. I remember playing croquet as a child on family holidays. I beat my sister once, which was really hard for her to take and I remember watching from the side of the pitch, cheering as my dad won the final of the hotel tournament. So for me, croquet is like a comforting childhood smell, though for over 20 years it had never entered my head. Until January 2014 when I was having lunch at the Westbourne pub. In The Sunday Times there was a list of the top ten things to try in 2014. Sitting proudly at No. 2 was croquet. In early summer there was a piece about the Hove Beach Croquet Club in The Argus – saying it was one of Brighton’s best kept secrets. I had never heard of the club, but I had to go.
“At the end of the 19th century croquet was more popular than tennis. Tennis eventually came out on top because of croquet’s unsavoury reputation. In America it became associated with gambling, drinking and philandering to such an extent that it was once banned in Boston as an immoral practice. It gives release to all the mischief in you. It makes you want to do bad things….it is a great game.” You should give croquet a try, you might just love it. The new season starts soon and I can’t wait. Amber Williams
Throughout August and September, I rekindled my relationship with croquet and discovered a little oasis of lazy days, easy laughs, curious people, interesting conversation, scrabble (not sure about that one), oh, and croquet. Now if you are still thinking that croquet is a weird game, I give you this quote from the club’s handbook.
Hove Beach Croquet Club is a relaxed, informal, friendly club for anyone who would like to watch, learn and play croquet. Opening Times At weekends in good weather the pitches will be set up by 12 noon. We could be playing until sundown. On weekdays, ask in the café at the Bowling Club.
Green Fees 2015 Green Fees are £10 per hour per pitch Including equipment rental, pitch hire and a little basic coaching if you need it (weekends only). Limited concessions are also available.

This May, as part of the Artists Open Houses of Brighton festival, the Poets Garden Studio throws its gates open for the first time ever and invites you, its dear neighbours, in to feast your senses on many wonderful works of art and craft. Artists will be showing oil street scenes, hand-carved sculptures on plinths in the garden bed, flights of brightly painted butterflies, handsome handmade handbags, illuminating photograms of Mother Nature’s idyllic creations, wonderful woodprints, captivating children’s book illustrations, fascinating fine-art pen and ink experiments, whirling seascape scenes and squids made out of words! Casting our net into Sussex, a Lewes jeweller brings marvellous jewels and other treasures, an awardwinning carver gives live demonstrations of his craft, a Shoreham award-winning poet reads out his written words on the hour. To broaden our horizons and give a world view, we warmly welcome in multi-talented international artists from Switzerland and as far afield as Peru, who bring mosaic art, flying birds and native insights. We are genuinely thrilled to be supporting Friends of Sussex Hospices through artist donations on our Private View evening on Saturday 2nd of May 7-9pm. One of our own is bravely facing a challenge with cancer right now and his daughter tells me that his participation in Poets Garden Studio is keeping him going and giving him hope. In fact, all of our artists desire to inspire by bringing you beautifully made objects, made from loving care and continuous investment in their craft. With the passion and commitment that is going on quietly behind closed doors, our contribution to the local economy is in safe, dedicated, imaginative and brilliant hands. Please bring yours along to our May weekend events…and feel free to applaud what is bound to delight, amuse and uplift you! Hope to see you there from 11am to 6pm on 2/3, 9/10, 16/17 and 23/24 May at Poets Garden Studio, Unit 11, 18a Arthur Street.
