Welcome to Poets Pages and we hope you have enjoyed a great summer in this fantastic area of Hove. It has certainly been a mixed summer weatherwise. I have stood outside my house and measured 102 degrees during that heatwave early in July and I have also headed out for the day in a jacket and with a woolly hat in my pocket just in case as it was so chilly! It has certainly been predictably unpredictable in a truly British way! We have some good local content for you this month. Another local councillor is featured on page 5. We also have an interview with the new headmaster at Hove Park school. There are a variety of other local articles this month so we hope you find some things of interest. Have a great September! The third in a series of interviews with all the local councillors in Poets’ Corner…

Meet Wish Councillor Garry Peltzer Dunn Garry was re-elected in May as a Conservative councillor for Wish ward. He is a former Mayor of Brighton & Hove and leader of the old Hove Borough Council. How long have you lived in West Hove? About sixty years – that sounds terrible - part of two centuries and two millennia! What is your background? My entire working life was involved with property. I qualified as a chartered surveyor and worked in Brighton and Hove for many years. My surveying practice was based in Portland Road for a good number of years. This has of course given me an insight into the many problems people experience with housing. How long have you been a councillor and what is your proudest achievement? I was first elected to the Old Hove Borough Council in 1971. I became a member of Brighton and Hove Council in 1999. My proudest achievement is probably that most times I seem to have been seen to be a good local councillor who has represented residents in a reasonable manner. Although I have been defeated in some elections I have in the main managed to encourage residents to

vote for me! My aim throughout my time on the council is to try to ensure that residents get good services at a fair price. What do you hope to change in the area over the next four years? Resident involvement is vital with local associations being an essential cog in representing residents’ views. Groups such as KAWHRA are greatly appreciated. I would hope that other groups will become involved with the West Hove Forum which at the present time has over 20 local spokespersons representing our area. Although improvements have taken place in Stoneham and Wish Park I would like to see further improvements to the Hove Lagoon and the esplanade. It’s time that monies are spent in our ward (and not just in central Brighton). Commerce is vital to our area and I (together with my fellow councillor, Robert Nemeth) will do everything we can to make the Boundary Road shopping area more attractive to traders and shoppers alike. What are your interests outside politics? Chip (my wife) and I have two children and three grandchildren. We are lucky to be in close touch and enjoy their company (even when we disagree!). I enjoy sport and now play bowls (Hove and Kingsway Club) with cricket having now given me up! I am a life member of the Sussex County Cricket Club and the Hove Civic Society and a member of the Hove Deep Sea Anglers, although the only thing I fish for is compliments! How can people contact you? Living at 234 New Church Road, I am easily accessible and hold a surgery there every month (apart from August). My telephone number is 01273 291186. Robert Nemeth and I are in the process of arranging residents’ surgeries throughout the ward, and the venues and times will be announced very shortly. We will continue to issue our ward newsletters by email and if you would like to put your name on our list please contact me (garry.peltzerdunn@brighton-hove.gov.uk). In conclusion please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any problems with which you feel I might be able to be of some assistance.

Here is an opportunity to support a very worthwhile local charity...

The Big Sleepout 2015 Do you often find yourself taking for granted a warm house at the end of a long, cold winter’s day, tucking into a hot meal and finally climbing into a comfortable bed? For so many sleeping rough around Brighton & Hove, this is far from their reality. The Big Sleepout 2015, run by Portland Road-based charity Off The Fence, will give a glimpse of what life is like for those without homes and raise the much needed funds to rebuild their lives. Will you join us on Saturday November 14th? Are you up to the challenge? The Big Sleepout is another annual Off The Fence fundraising event with a twist! Last year a big group of supporters and long-time Off The Fence friends got involved in raising awareness for one of the biggest issues in Brighton & Hove: homelessness. Held in the grounds of Aldrington School, Hove, from 7pm to 8am the following day, The Big Sleepout is the best way to spread awareness of homelessness, to experience sleeping rough like many around Brighton & Hove do on a daily basis and raise money through sponsorship. We love a challenge and what better way to unite together in raising much needed funds for work with the homeless community

around our city? There’s also a complimentary breakfast for all participants courtesy of our friends at Crossover Brighton. If you’d like to take part, put up one of the event posters on your notice board or receive flyers for the event to share, drop our fundraising team an email at: fundraising@offthefence.org.uk. We really believe our services and your support can make the biggest difference to so many lives around our city.

The next in a series of articles with advice from local physiotherapist Martina Bisping...

Focus on Physiotherapy...

What is tennis elbow?

Tennis elbow is a repetitive strain injury of tendons in the outer elbow. Tennis players can get it from practising topspin but the people I see are more likely to have overused a mouse or screwdriver. What are the symptoms? In tennis elbow, the muscles that pull your wrist and fingers up are overused, putting strain on your elbow tendons, and so you are just as likely to feel pain along the forearm and into the hand as you are to feel the sharp local pain at the elbow. Some people have pain when resting but usually the pain comes on as you lift a cup of tea or twist the wrist to use a key or a kettle. What should I do if I have tennis elbow? Keep using your arm, but avoid repetitious activities by using the mouse with your other hand or buying an electric screwdriver. With computers, adjust your desk so you sit upright with the keyboard and mouse close to you so you don’t hold your arms up and can

rest your wrist on the desk. Important are specific stretches and strengthening exercises which are easy to find on the internet. Martina has been a chartered physiotherapist for 20 years and practises at the Shadi Danin Medi Spa in New Church Road.

The Real Junk Food Project Brighton intercept food destined for landfill to turn into healthy meals to serve to the community on a ‘pay as you feel’ basis. They run a regular café each week at One Church, Brighton, and will hold a pop-up café at The Hive in Stoneham Park on Wednesday September 16th, between 1 and 3pm. The aim is to reach people facing food poverty or those in isolation. The Hive would also like to encourage the community to volunteer on the day to make it a success and are hoping it will be a monthly event. For further information, email: hive.hovecafe@gmail.com.

Brought to you by locally based nutritionist Nathalie Sansonetti

Nathalie’s Monthly Health TIP

Back to school – back to bad habits? Can’t quite believe it’s that time of year already? Back to uniforms, homework, new shoes and….packed lunches and school dinners. For some of you, school dinners will be the easier option but, for others, packed lunches can be a source of daily stress. The reasons can be varied, but the cause is often that we try and over-complicate things. Remember how summer lunches, dinners and snacks never seem to be so difficult and kids will eat a lot of the simpler, fresher options you prepare? This seems particularly true if you go abroad and prepared meals or take-aways are not available and salads, a sliced tomato, mozzarella and the local baguette suddenly become very popular. So why not keep this simplicity going through the year? Try and identify about five things your children enjoyed this summer – be it salads, fruit, cheese, sushi, bread, chicken, fresh crudités - and offer a variety of them. I particularly like the multi-compartmented boxes where you can put a mix of various foods – in small amounts, to give them choice depending on their moods or appetite that day. Make it simple (cut up vegetables, cubed omelette, a boiled

egg, a little fruit, a little bit of cheese, a handful of seeds, houmous/dips, some pieces of roast chicken, buttered cubes of wholewheat/rye bread), but make sure it’s appetizing, colourful and most of all varied. And remember that if they don’t finish the box, you can make up for it with their after-school snack – a great opportunity to include healthy foods (cut up crudités, raw nuts, a little fruit, small wholewheat sandwich bites, etc) as they’ll be ravenous and more likely to want to eat anything that’s on offer. Check out: 100daysofrealfood.com for great lunchbox ideas – you’ll want your own! They grow so quickly that a lot of money can be wasted on expensive clothing - here is the solution...

Why buy new when you can buy Pre-Loved at a ‘Little Loves’ sale? I’m a mother of two and boy do we get through a lot of clothing. My boys are 17 months apart, one was a summer baby and the other a winter, so hand-me-downs are not so easy! Buying everything new was not an option for me, so my quest to buy ‘pre-loved’ began. There are so many bonuses to buying pre-loved for your children. Here are some to name a few: • You’re recycling - everyone wins, including the planet! • You can buy really awesome and lovely clothing/ toys in great condition that you’d never really afford otherwise. • You save money to spend on little treats for the week, coffee, ice cream, playgroups and other kid essentials. • Get it messy, broken or lost, it doesn’t hurt half as much as it would had you paid the full price. • It feels good! Everyone loves a bargain and to see your little ones smile as they don their new tee or play with their new toys, is priceless. • If you buy items in good condition and they actually stay that way/survive, you can re-sell them and make some money back, giving another buyer the same joy buying pre-loved as you had. So here’s the thing, the Little Loves sale is more than just buying pre-loved and saving money (or making some selling), it’s also a community event involving parents from the area and local businesses. Nurseries, “mumpreneurs” (like myself), local shops and even local

cake bakers get involved in one way or another, bringing parents from the community together under one roof for a few hours. The Little Loves children’s pre-loved sale will be held at Hove Methodist Church Hall, Saturday 19th September, 10-1pm. Tables are £8. If you’d like one to sell, please contact littleloves2015@gmail.com

Meet the new headmaster of Hove Park School...

New Headteacher at Hove Park School Rob Niedermaier-Reed Rob Niedermaier-Reed is the new headteacher at Hove Park School. We found out more about him… Where were you working before? I was the headteacher at Chessington Community College in the Royal Borough of Kingston for six years. Before that, I worked as a deputy headteacher in Lewisham and as an assistant headteacher in Tower Hamlets. Why did you want to come to Hove Park? My previous school had recently had a highly successful Ofsted inspection. This was followed by a visit from the Secretary of State for Education recognising the hard work of everyone - students, parents, colleagues and governors - that had led to the transformation of our school. I loved working at my old school but the time was right to think about the next stage of my career.

Do you plan to make any changes at the school?

I saw the advert for Hove Park and it immediately caught my attention. A job in beautiful Hove! I investigated a little further and became more excited. Colleagues and friends knew about Hove Park School and everything they told me was positive. The moment I walked through the door, I liked the atmosphere. The first people I met were friendly and welcoming. During the interview days, I was increasingly impressed with what I saw. Relationships between students and adults were clearly based on respect. Hove Park was evidently an outward looking school committed to serving the local community. The school had made impressive improvements and there was an almost tangible feel of optimism and ambition. I soon realised that I really wanted to work at Hove Park School.

Through the hard work of our staff, students and parents, Hove Park is already a good school with outstanding features. We will now become a truly outstanding school. Our school will be characterised by superb teaching and extensive extra-curricular opportunities that guarantee the best possible education for every child. Our children will display the highest standards in their studies, their appearance and their behaviour. Where do you stand on the issue of becoming an academy? I have always worked in local authority maintained schools. Schools should fully engage with and be accountable to their communities. It was immediately obvious to me that Hove Park is an outward-looking school and it is a school that has experienced considerable success as part of the family of maintained schools in Brighton and Hove. Unless government policy determines otherwise then I want us to remain as a community maintained school. What are your interests outside work?

I love cycling and I’m really looking forward to exploring Sussex on my bike. I love rugby. I have coached, refereed and (many years ago!) played a little but nowadays I am primarily an obsessive Leicester Tigers fan (and still a Rd, Poets Corner season ticket holder who goes to most home games!). I also love film and one of the leaving presents from my old school was a year’s membership of a local Brighton cinema.

Here we feature local author John Medhurst who tells us about his first book...

Poets Person - John Medhurst John Medhurst of Shelley Road had his first book published last year – “That Option No Longer Exists: Britain 1974-76”. Tell us more about your book... It comes from a long standing feeling of mine that the 1970s gets a raw deal. For example a recent survey examined a whole range of social indicators and found that, for most ordinary people, 1976 was the “happiest year” between 1945 and now! Obviously many things have improved since the 70s such as more enlightened views on sexism and racism, but in some ways the 70s was a more progressive society than we have today. There was much less inequality socially and economically, the old elites were really being challenged, and many of the things proposed by people like Tony Benn look pretty sensible today in light of failed privatisations, the economic crash etc. I wanted to reexamine all that. What do you do besides writing books? I work for a civil service trade union. When not at work I like to walk our dogs along the front for lunch at Café and Salvage in Western Road. I also love working on our allotment at the Weald, an oasis of health and greenery in the city which we must defend from any threat to sell off. How long have you lived in Poets’ Corner? Since we moved down from London in 1996. I thought I’d miss London but I’ve never looked back. What do you like about the area? That it’s the best of both worlds of Brighton & Hove. It’s a great place to bring up kids, and we’re five minutes from the seafront. We don’t have a car but we can easily pop in to Brighton by bus or train. Poets’ Corner has a real community atmosphere. And Hove’s restaurants are

outstanding, especially Danny’s Chinese and Jukes, a Caribbean place on Portland Road which does a superb mutton curry. Have you got any more books planned? I’m working on one on the Russian Revolution that I hope to have out for the 100th centenary in 2017. It should be a different approach than a standard history. How can we get a copy of your book? It’s on Amazon at http://www.amazon.co.uk/ThatOption-No-Longer-Exists/dp/1782796002/ref=tmm_ pap_title_0 It can also be ordered from Waterstones or from City Books, where we had a very enjoyable book launch last September.

If you would like to help a vulnerable young person then read on...

Barnardo’s Supported Lodgings – More Hosts Needed Could you offer more than a room? Earlier this year, we asked for people to provide lodgings and support for vulnerable young people aged 16 to 21. We have now managed to find and approve our first four host households and we have young people in placements who are working towards living independently, which is fantastic news. We also have a number of other people who have expressed an interest and/or started the assessment process. There is still a real need for more placements though. Most residents in Brighton & Hove are familiar with the lack of housing in the city. Whilst the majority of people find somewhere safe to live, the same can’t be said of some vulnerable young people. The children’s charity Barnardo’s and a number of Brighton residents are trying to prevent this from happening by finding new homes for young people at risk of living on the streets. Olly Davidson, the Service Manager, said: “Brighton and Hove is full of generous-spirited people. We are pleased to be working with some of these people to offer a second chance to some young people who don’t have anywhere else to go.”

The scheme was started at the end of 2014 alongside Brighton & Hove City Council, with the aim of supporting young people who may be homeless or leaving the care system. It offers supported lodgings to help them make a smooth transition to independent living. Eddie Miller, 78, a Brighton & Hove Supported Lodgings host, said: “I can see it’s a very good idea to have young care leavers staying with a family, so they can learn to budget, cook and live on their own.” Barnardo’s is looking for more volunteers to open their doors to vulnerable young people. The service is looking for individuals or families to provide a home for 16 to 21 year-olds, along with emotional care, practical advice and confidence building to boost self-sufficiency. Hosts will receive round-the-clock assistance, a key worker, a training programme and an allowance of £150 per week. Lyn Lynch, also a host, said: “There are lots of expectations on this generation and not all of them are helpful. We can show these young people that they are important and they can have their own goals and don’t have to conform…and can make a difference in the world.” If you would like more information about becoming a Supported Lodgings host, contact Olly or Lauren on 01273 412010, email brightonlodgings@barnardos.org. uk or follow @bhovelodgings on Twitter.
