Here is an update from the Friends of Stoneham Park...

News from the Friends of Stoneham Park As we rush into spring, the Friends of Stoneham Park are picking up the pace too. We have already set the dates for our events this year with the first one, our Spring Clean, taking place on 9 April. Our wonderful Park Ranger, Min, is supplying the equipment, we’ll be keeping warm with hot drinks and we just need you to come and help us spruce up the park! We move on to the Big Lunch on 12 June, which is a nationwide initiative to bring communities together. We’ll be hosting a drinks tent and a BBQ and we’re hoping to see as many of you there as possible. Quickly following is our AGM on 7 July – this is the one to come to if you want to get more involved with FOSP. We are always on the lookout for local talent – photographers, fundraising experts, face painters, musicians. You don’t have to get involved in every meeting or every event – just pick and choose! Picnic in the Park next on 10 September is our big summer event with food, music and entertainment, and it’s a lot of fun and hard work to organise. The same goes for our Winter Market on 3 December. It’s lovely to round off the year with mulled wine, carols and a visit from Father Christmas.

FOSP obviously don’t work alone. The Parks Department of Brighton & Hove City Council are in charge of the infrastructure and maintenance and they do a marvellous job. Lara and Col at the Hive are vital to the park and community and do an amazing job. We’re also welcoming Hove Farmers’ Market this year.

Stoneham Park may be small but it’s one of the most used in Brighton and Hove, not surprising really given the amount of people who live around it. Go in on a school day around 3.30pm and you may be overwhelmed by the sheer amount of small people getting rid of excess energy! However we want to try to make the park appealing to all ages and at the moment are considering other ways of doing this. We have funding for a table tennis table to go in this year, and we are also looking into the costs for a wildlife area. We would love to have regular tidying sessions, and for local residents to get more involved with gardening and planting.

If you’d like to get more involved please email us on friends.of.stoneham.park@gmail.com or follow us on Facebook/FriendsOfStonehamPark or Twitter @ friendsstoneham.

We are looking for reliable local people to distribute magazines door to door each month. Must be very reliable. References required Call Andy on 07730285152

Helen Day lives in Wordsworth Street. She is a former Assistant Head Teacher but retrained as a Cognitive Hypnotherapist after the birth of her daughter.

Poets Person: Helen Day How long have you lived in Poets Corner? I moved into Poets Corner in 14 years ago. It’s such a great place to live. I couldn’t imagine wanting to live anywhere else. What is your favourite place to go in the area? I love the regeneration that has taken place recently on Portland Road. There is a real vibrancy in the area. Everywhere there is a sense of community and belonging. It’s a pleasure to be able to support good local independent businesses. Would you change anything in Poets Corner? The only thing is the parking issue. If it’s after 6pm we can never find a space. Why did you decide to retrain? I went to see a hypnotherapist myself when I was undergoing IVF. I do believe it was what made the difference for me personally. When I fell pregnant I

knew I couldn’t be the mother I wanted to be and work full time as an Assistant Head Teacher in a busy secondary school and do both roles as well as I would like. I looked into retraining so I could give back a little of what I had received in terms of support. I came across Cognitive Hypnotherapy. Its principles are firmly based in modern neuroscience which really appealed to me. When my daughter was nearly two I set up my practice. Now she’s at school I can devote more time to the business which I love, and still get to drop her off and pick her up every day. It’s a perfect working model for me, allowing me to spend quality time with the family. I have also recently trained with one of the world’s leading coaches in America and now offer coaching myself. It’s great to be able to help people overcome whatever is holding them back from being the best they can be, and then help them achieve whatever it is they want to achieve. What do you enjoy about your job? Meeting the people that I do. I am so humbled by my clients’ life experiences and their determination to overcome the challenges they are facing. I love working with them. But the best part is when they leave, and witnessing the transformations that they have experienced. That makes everything worthwhile. For more information about personal success coaching you can contact Helen via her website www.helendaytherapy.co.uk or call 07886 593619.

Here is a testimonial about a course going on locally...

Yoga Therapy for the Mind approach to living more mindfully and compassionately. I now regularly attend Neela’s Holistic Yoga classes at the Hive café in Poets Corner. This helps me stay motivated to continue with my practice.

“I loved and benefited from this course so much I did it twice. I wasn’t the only one. It’s that good. After a tough four years involving the loss of my mum to cancer and my own breast cancer and surgery, I found myself in a dark, depressed and anxious state, emotionally overwhelmed, unable to find peace or meaning in anything. I desperately needed healing and restoration of body, mind and soul. I was therefore relieved and excited to discover Neela’s Yoga Therapy for the Mind course. From week one I knew I was in the right place. The other participants were lovely. Some, like me, had done yoga before, others were beginners. All of us, however, were struggling emotionally. A qualified yoga therapist, Neela gently guided us and made everyone feel valuable and welcome. She was caring and encouraging, with the flexibility to cater to everyone’s needs. Her sense of humour was also surprisingly helpful (I’ve never enjoyed yoga sessions so much). Being in a small group meant that we had personal attention and the support of being with others ‘in the same boat’. We learned simple, practical methods for dealing with anxiety and depression and developed a longer-term

With news of a local fund raising event held by Little Loves...

Little Loves Raises Money for the Jeanne Saunders Centre As part of an on-going effort to raise money for charities in the Hove community, Little loves held a raffle at the last sale on 21st February, to raise money to purchase sensory equipment for the Jeanne Saunders Centre. The Jeanne Saunders Centre is a free Special Educational Needs and/or disability pre-school (PRESENS) in Hove which offers early intervention, support and advice to children from two and a half to five years. The children may have speech/language difficulties, physical difficulties, autism, social difficulties and learning difficulties. This service is currently under threat from funding cuts due to the latest Government decision to move PRESENS children into mainstream schools; this will in turn see the closure of the centre, which would in my opinion be a great loss to those parents seeking specialist advice, support and attention for their child from teachers with specialist knowledge and years of experience.

As organiser of Little loves, I met with the head at the centre to see how Little loves might be able to help support the centre and what the fundraising could go towards. As sensory play is fundamental in special education, because it provides relief, comfort and aids development, it was important the fundraising money was spent on this type of equipment. It gives us great pleasure to announce that Little loves raised £204.50 to go towards new equipment that will make a big difference to the children s day. We wish to thank everyone for taking part in the raffle and especially to all the businesses that were able to donate prizes. Little loves is a children’s pre-loved sale based in Hove where the parents and carers of Hove and its surrounding areas can sell and buy pre-loved children’s clothes, toys, books and accessories. Little loves also champions local businesses at the sales so there is a fantastic selection of new, handmade, crafty, tasty and arty goods at the sale too! You can find out more about the sales on the website (www.littlelovesuk.co.uk), Facebook, Twitter and even Instagram, or by joining the mailing list at littleloves2015@gmail.com . To find out more about the current proposals to cut PRESENS in Hove, please join the Facebook group “Save our Specialist SEND Support Services in Brighton & Hove”. Angela Whippy

Here’s a club to join if you’d like to get creative...

Take Up Painting at Your Local Art Club Have you ever thought of taking up drawing or painting? If you would like the opportunity, how about trying your local art club in Hove. Whether you have never done any art work before or wish to reignite a long lost skill, Dupont Art Club is there to welcome you. It is open to all abilities; some members had never held a paintbrush in their lives before whilst others have made art their careers. So why not go along and give it a try! You can start by having a free “taster session”, then if you decide to join membership is £35 per annum and each session you attend is just £5 for two and a half hours and you only pay for the times you attend. There is a tutor at every session who will help and advise you as well as demonstrating interesting art topics. Sessions are held on Wednesday afternoons 1.30 – 4pm, Thursday mornings from 10am – 12.30pm and Thursday afternoons from 1.30 – 4pm. On Thursdays there is a model all day; if you wish to draw him or her you pay a small amount extra to cover their costs. Alternatively you may choose to do a still life or your own subject. On Wednesday every fortnight the tutor will introduce a different topic ranging from the

use of varied media to a specific subject. These topics are discussed and demonstrated for those who wish to try them out. Some members just like to work on their own projects and are given advice from the tutor if they wish. Aside from weekly sessions the club has quite a varied calendar with opportunities to sketch “plein air” and they occasionally invite outside artists to talk or give demonstrations. Dupont hold an annual art exhibition and join in with the Brighton and Hove Arts Council Exhibition at the Friends Centre. Members’ art work can also be seen for sale in two cafés in Brighton. Dupont Art Club was founded in 1979, the first gatherings being at the Old Market in Hove. The name Dupont was inspired by the Dupont Riding Academy that was held there in the 1870s. After three years at the Old Market, Dupont moved, eventually ending up at the Connaught Centre in Hove. After the Connaught closed in 2010, the club moved to Ventnor Hall in Blatchington Road. That is where you will find them today, so why not go along and discover more on a Wednesday or Thursday. Take a look at their terrific website: www.dupontartclub.org.uk.

Children Raise Money to Help Refugees In April, Hal and Thea Moore from Shelley Road are walking 8 miles from Hove Lagoon to Brighton Marina and back to raise money for child refugees in Europe. Hal, 8, said, “When we first saw the refugee crisis Thea cried. Then we started seeing it all over the newspapers and news. We thought it was terrible so we decided somehow to help. Then we had this really great idea: a sponsored walk.” They are walking with their parents and friends and have a fundraising page at justgiving.com/Halandtheawalk where they are fast approaching their new target of £400. All money raised goes to Save the Children.

The need for change has been triggered by rising demand for secondary school places, and also by the University of Brighton’s proposal to create a new secondary free school in the eastern central area of the city. As of September 2018 the projected rise in the number of secondary age pupils means that in some catchment areas there will be too many pupils for the places available. The proposals being considered relate to community secondary schools and academies, as well as the proposed University of Brighton secondary free school, but not to faith schools. Schools, parents and other interested parties are invited to give their views on three different catchment area proposals: Model A: each school to have its own catchment area

14% 12%

20%

Model B: the city to have four catchment areas, three with two schools in and one with three schools in Model C: each secondary school being part of a catchment areaKey with three - Average of theschools percentage ofin. pupils in each catchment area receiving Free School me Under Model A, residents of Poets Corner would be in the catchment area for Hove Park School. Model B would give Poets Corner residents a choice between 532500E 525000E 527500E 530000E Hove Park School and Portslade Aldridge Community Academy (PACA). Model C would see Blatchington Mill also included as part of a wider three-school catchment area. Residents’ views are sought on whether to keep random allocation within catchment areas as the ‘tiebreaker’ for oversubscribed schools, or to use home to school distance instead. Councillors are also looking to see whether they can make more schools more accessible to children from disadvantaged backgrounds. The chair of the council’s cross party school organisation working group is Cllr Daniel Chapman. He said: “The boundary lines indicated are suggestions at this stage. The feedback we get from this engagement exercise will help us draw up concrete proposals that will be the subject of a formal consultation process in the autumn.” Wish ward councillor Robert Nemeth said: “My ward colleague Cllr Garry Peltzer Dunn and I have alerted as many residents as we can about this worrying proposal and have written to the Administration for the date of a Hove consultation meeting. We feel that Options B and C would be far better for West Hove than A.” You can find out more and give your views via the council website at https://www.brighton-hove.gov. uk/2018-admissions. The closing date for comments is Sunday 24th April.
