Local update…
News from the Friends of Stoneham Park... I’m sitting in my kitchen writing this article on a Saturday morning in mid-March. The news is full of public events being curtailed by the outbreak of coronavirus. The Brighton Marathon has been moved to September and professional football matches have been halted for three weeks. By the time you are reading this, it is very likely we will be in the midst of more closures and cancellations. I do hope all the events the Friends of Stoneham Park have planned can go ahead as scheduled, because small events like those we put on are the lifeblood of a local community. Some of these were discussed at a very successful open meeting, the first of the year, that was held on 4 March in the Old Port, on Portland Road. There was a good turnout, with a few new faces as well as the familiar ones. There was a lot to talk about. On Easter Sunday, circumstances permitting, we will be having an Easter egg hunt between 11.00 and 13.00 by the café. It is only £2 to enter and will be a lot of fun for children. If we cannot hold the event on Easter Sunday (12 April), we will try to re-run it on another Sunday. Easter is a ‘moveable feast’, after all! We expect our Midsummer Fair to go ahead on Saturday

20 June. We already have delicious food stalls and an ice-cream tricycle confirmed, together with our beer and Pimm’s tents. A programme of live music and entertainment is coming along nicely. We are still looking for helpers on the day - please get in touch. Two changes in the park will have been noticed by many of you. First, some new timbers have been erected at the gate by the Snug café. This project, part financed by us, will be a new planted area of shrubs and flowering plants and is going to look wonderful in the summer and in the years beyond. The second thing is that a rather fabulous family have started a book exchange. It’s called the ‘Stoneham Book Transformer’ (pictured) and you can find it on one of the old gate posts by the flagpole. Such acts of kindness and initiative really do help make Poets’ Corner magnificent! Volunteers needed from the West Hove community…
Hove Junior School needs governors... Hove Junior School is currently looking for two new co-opted governors to join our governing body and would love to attract individuals from our local community who have the skills and experience to contribute to the success of our school. As an inner city school we are keen to make the governing body more reflective of the diversity of our pupils. You do not need to be a parent to become a coopted governor. This is a challenging but hugely rewarding role where you can make a real difference to young people, give something back to your local community and use and develop your skills in a board-level environment. We would especially like to hear from you if you have: •
A desire to contribute to and represent our diverse community
•
An open and enquiring mind
•
The ability to look at issues objectively
•
The confidence to ask questions and join in debate
•
A willingness to listen and make informed judgements
•
The ability to work well with others
•
Willingness to dedicate your time
As a large and growing school, we’re keen to appoint individuals with experience in HR, risk management, data analysis, safeguarding, SEND and Health and Safety to add to the existing range of skills on the board. The full governing board meets twice a term, with separate committees made up of smaller groups of governors which meet 3-6 times a year. Most of our current governors work full time and manage to fit in their role around their other commitments, but we
welcome retirees, part time workers or anyone with the skills and passion for the job. You don’t need to have prior experience of being a governor, there is plenty of excellent training and mentoring available to you. Plus, the support of a talented and supportive team to work with who are passionate about helping Hove Junior School deliver the best education possible for every pupil. If you would like to know more about this vacancy, please visit our website or contact Belle Howard, Senior Clerk to Governors: bellehoward@hovejun.brightonhove.sch.uk http://www.hovejuniorschool.co.uk/ governorvacancies

Old Photo... Portland Road This photo was kindly sent to us by Martine at Wild Heart in Portland Road. It shows a crater on wasteland near Portland Gate after a plane had crashed there during World War Two. The original picture caption stated that the crater was made by a German fighter but we are not sure that this is correct - it may have been British fighter pilot Dennis Noble, who died in a fight with a German bomber in August 1940. His remains were found in 1996 at the top of Woodhouse Road. Portland Gate was on the south side of Portland Road, opposite the Ingram Estate, and was replaced in the late 1990s by McNair Court and Noble Court (named in honour of Sgt Noble).

Bloodline wills and care home fees… Can you avoid your house being sold to pay for care home fees? The answer is sometimes yes and sometimes no. If you are a couple (married or not), you can do a lot with your wills to help with this. Solutions for couples. The best solution for a couple who own their own home is to make sure they have the right sort of wills and own the house in the right way. There are two options: 1. Beneficial joint tenants (owners). 2. Tenants (owners) in common. How can Camrass Wills help? We can advise you what is best for your situation. We can tell you how you own your home – the Land Registry documents do not use either of the phrases, beneficial joint tenants or tenants in common! Lasting powers of attorney. These are often overlooked but they are a vital part of planning for later life. We offer a comprehensive service to help you set these up correctly. __________________________________________________________________________________________

Local history from Rachel Bridgeman…
Icy Times in Poets Corner
“Hokey-pokey, penny a lump, Hokey-pokey, sweet and cold; For a penny, new or old”
The “hokey pokey man” peddling ice cream from his handcart was a common sight in Poets Corner from the 1880s. Invariably Italians fleeing poverty, it is said that the name came from their cry of “Gelati! O che poco!” (“Ice cream! Oh, how cheap!”) Children and adults alike clamoured for this cheap treat. Made in the slums, served in a shallow bowl, the hawkers sold a “lick” or “penny wipe”. No spoon provided; lick out the dish, hand it back for a wipe before it’s passed to the next customer. Unsurprisingly, the lack of hygiene meant this simple pleasure could prove dangerous – spreading diphtheria, diarrhoea and enteric fever. In 1901, in Brighton, fines were imposed on street vendors selling contaminated ice cream. But without ice, there could be no ice cream. And locals from Poets Corner were employed in the ice business. During the

19th century and early 20th centuries, ice was brought by sailing ships from Norway to Shoreham Port where it was unloaded and stored in huge ice-wells at Aldrington Basin. And other men were employed at both of the local ice factories - one on Holland Road; the other in Portland Road (on the site of the Portland Road Trading Estate) where ice was manufactured by the Kent and Sussex Pure Ice Company from 1879. The latter advertised its product as "Pure Ice Made from Celebrated Goldstone Water, Fresh Every Day from the Factory”. News from Wish ward councillor Robert Nemeth…
Councillor news… Promoting an uplifting message is the priority for our piece this month – so Cllr Garry Peltzer Dunn and I are keen to draw attention to three positive stories that should mean a lot to the community. First, our campaign for trees in Wish Ward is yielding some excellent results already. Replacement trees are now in the pavement outside Wish Park Surgery on Portland Road following destruction by motorists of the originals. A survey of the pavements on and around School Road is soon to take place. £25,000 has now been set aside for the wildlife corner in Stoneham Park. It’s slower than we would like but it’s now a question of when rather than if. We are keen to work with as many residents as possible on this and are now in the process of building a core team of tree enthusiasts with a view to soon undertaking a survey of the whole ward to find out just how many trees our area could realistically support. Please get in touch if you would like to join the core group. Two projects that are getting financial backing from Garry and me, through our allocated ward budgets, are trees for Glebe Villas and a hedge for the schools on Portland Road. Trees on Glebe make absolute sense – it’s the only road in the area without them. And a hedge to protect kids in the school playgrounds from pollution is an absolute priority. We will be putting £4,000 into these projects and, working closely with residents, have raised significant further sums. Outside the schools, road safety at school drop-off and collection times remains a concern so we have drawn up a series of demands for the Council; some of which are already happening such as scheduled traffic warden patrols. I’ve been attending on numerous mornings myself as well.
C
We are also keen to see improved markings including on the two School Road crossing points; a review of the road layout generally; provision of yellow A-boards; legal guidance and practical advice for safety volunteers; and various other related issues. Finally, it may well be that the situation has moved on significantly since writing this piece, but we urge everybody to look out for any vulnerable neighbours during what will be a testing spring period. If anybody needs to run ideas for community action past us, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Cllr Robert Nemeth Robert.Nemeth@brighton-hove.gov.uk

Plans for Sackville Trading Estate approved Brighton & Hove City Council’s Planning Committee approved new redevelopment plans for the Sackville Trading Estate and Hove Goods Yard on 4th March. Moda Living’s previous plans were rejected by the committee in July 2019. Their revised proposals for the site, to the east of Sackville Road, include 564 residential units and 260 care community units, retail floorspace, office accommodation and community/leisure floorspace. The buildings will range from 2 to 15 storeys and vehicular access will be via the existing entrance from Sackville Road with new pedestrian access off Sackville Road to the south of the site adjacent to the railway bridge. 87 objections to the scheme were received by the council. A council planning officer recommended that the scheme be granted planning permission. His report to the committee said: “Overall, the proposal is considered to be a marked improvement when compared with the previously refused scheme with

a much improved housing mix, an increase in overall employment floorspace and potential jobs, excellent levels of daylight within the care community, some marginal improvements to the private amenity offer and improvements to the appearance and design.” The application was also supported by Hove MP Peter Kyle and by the Hove Station Neighbourhood Forum (HSNF). Hove Park ward councillor Samer Bagaeen and Goldsmid councillors Jackie O’Quinn and John Allcock all spoke against the plans at the planning committee meeting. Westbourne councillor Chris Henry spoke in favour of the scheme. He said: “I’ve come to the conclusion that we’re not going to get better than what this plan offers from a private site.”

Some members of the committee said that they would have to support the scheme, as they felt it had addressed most of the reasons for refusal of the previous scheme, while acknowledging at the same time that they didn’t like the design and were unhappy with the amount of affordable housing. Cllr Daniel Yates said: “It looks like a massive university campus,” and Cllr Leo Littman commented: “Looking at it from Hove Park, it’s like we’re looking at Manhattan.” Cllr Phélim Mac Cafferty said that councillors had been given a stark warning about the quantity of homes needed to be built. “This is not the type of housing we should be building, but I don’t think we’ve got any choice.” However, Cllr Joe Miller thought it would be a positive addition to Hove. Councillors on the committee voted six to four in favour of permitting the development.
