Every month we feature local activities in Poet’s Corner and nearby. This Craft Club takes place at The Hive Cafe...
Craft Club for Children The aim of Craft Club is for kids to have fun and enjoy the experience of being creative. While I will always have fun projects planned, I also encourage those children who like to go off on a tangent! Art at school can be at times a bit more rigid in its approach – so it’s a great chance to let kids go with the flow artistically. I love showing the kids new ideas and also going with their lead. Sessions can often end with us all decorating and making paper aeroplanes or coming up with a game from our junk modelling materials or all of us trying to draw vampires and learn how to draw faces with different emotions! Giving children the freedom to make their own choices about the way in which they tackle a project and being encouraging and enthusiastic really boosts their selfconfidence and enjoyment of being creative. This autumn I’ll be doing projects on Mexican Day of the Dead, Diwali, and cool versions of all the classic seasonal projects like autumn leaves, Halloween and fireworks. Focus is on using a variation of techniques and materi-
als, and where possible we’ll always make artwork from recycled and scavenged materials. The classes are relaxed and informal, with music and lovely light upstairs at The Hive. I put information on my website about projects that we’ll be doing – if you are interested, please go to www.heidicompton.co.uk/ workshops. Craft Club runs every Thursday afternoon - 3:45-4:45pm 4-7 years and 5-6pm 7-11 year olds. There are limited spaces – so please always book ahead via phone/text 07717 665200 or email info@ heidi@heidicompton.co.uk. I hope to meet your arty children soon. Please look out for more classes aimed at pre-school children and adults in the future!

Every month we feature local activities in Poet’s Corner and nearby. Here is the opportunity to get super fit at the YMCA...
Burn Fat and Get Lean with Insanity Fitness No Worries Fitness and the Sussex Central YMCA, Marmion Road, Hove, are delighted to be one of the first in the area who are bringing you the workout that has taken the USA by storm! INSANITY is a high intensity workout that can help you burn fat and get lean in record time! INSANITY is a revolutionary, cardio-based, total-body conditioning programme based on the principles of MAX Interval Training. MAX Interval Training allows a person to beat the “stress adaptation response”, which normally happens when your body gets used to exercising at one level of exertion. The result of this is halting your progress on your fitness improvement journey. By using MAX Interval Training, INSANITY pushes the participant to new training heights, resulting in more calories burned, faster results, and a more efficient metabolism! INSANITY uses athletic drills to combine cardio and strength conditioning and can be customised to meet the needs of people of all fitness levels. There are 50 or 30 minute options. The MAX interval training method gives people the opportunity to burn more

Hove Community Acupuncture at the Tree of Life Centre
Low-Cost Treatment for the Whole Community Portland Road’s low-cost acupuncture clinic is open for three days each week at the Tree of Life Centre. It was the first of its kind in the UK - without an appointment, you can walk in off the street and receive the highest quality acupuncture treatment in a beautiful studio space, at a reduced rate. Treatment is open to everyone and is charged on a sliding scale of £20-£30 depending on what you can afford. Paul from Brighton explains: “I was diagnosed with tendinosis in both hands in January 2014 so I decided to give acupuncture a go, even though I was sceptical. I never expected it to be so effective and I’m grateful to the low-cost acupuncture drop-in for providing the opportunity for me to access the treatment. Thank you so much for your help.”
Tony from West Sussex said: “After my last treatment, I woke up feeling better than I had for the last 10 years! The drop-in clinics are brilliant and I am so glad I can access them.” The team who run the clinic are committed to treating all patients with the same care, respect and quality as private one-to-one acupuncture sessions. They are all members of the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) and the Association of Community & Multi-bed Acupuncture Clinics (ACMAC), and abide by their professional codes of conduct and ethics. For more information please call 01273 220159 or visit www.tolcentre.com
Every patient receives individual treatment and care in a spacious and specially equipped room where several people are present at the same time. Modesty and privacy are always respected, and most people find the atmosphere inviting, comfortable and relaxing.

We love to feature local people...if you fancy featuring let us know at info@poetspages.co.uk...
Poets Person...Caroline Henderson What is your name and where in Poets’ Corner do you live? I’m Caroline Henderson and I live in Bolsover Road. How long have you lived in the area? 14 years. What do you most like about living in Poets’ Corner? Friendly people from all backgrounds, especially in my road! I love the cafés, restaurants and pubs that have sprung up – one day I hope to spend more time in them. Poets’ Corner is great for families, with good schools, parks and of course the sea. What would you most like to see improved in the area? More trees on Portland Road! I also hope that important community spaces such as Westows and the YMCA will fight off the developers - we are going to need them even more as Poets’ Corner becomes more densely populated. We notice you won an Argus local hero award for your community work... Tell us more? I was nominated for my work running Hove Luncheon Club. We cater for 35 older people and have two buses collecting and dropping off people who are isolated, often through illness or lack of family and friends nearby, offering important social contact and a hot meal every Tuesday during term time. It feels like an extended family. We have an amazing team of volunteers. (I salute you all! You know who you are.) Lunch is three courses with soup, mains and a traditional pudding, with options for special diets. I’m told I make a decent fish pie. After lunch we have a resident poet, guest speakers and games, or members can relax and chat with a hot drink. We have fun! I am also a sessional cookery worker and an early years music specialist for Rhythmix. I’ve worked this year with
adults with learning disabilities, domestic violence survivors, travellers and children with disabilities. My work is varied and rewarding. I am a single parent to James and George so have gradually built up my freelance career around the school pick-ups and holidays. Anything exciting on the horizon? Hove Luncheon Club is bursting at the seams in its current venue and I’ve had to turn people away. We’ve been lucky to have had the support of the YMCA over the past few years but now need a bigger space. We are very excited to be re-locating to Hove Methodist Church on Portland Road (01273 324600) from September 2014.

“So…you’re telling me to ditch the margarine and low fat yoghurts and eat full fat butter and dairy??”… my (typically) puzzled client said after I’d given him an explanation of why ‘bad’ saturated fats have been wrongly banished from our diets. Researchers all over the world and in the UK (including a recent study funded by the British Heart Foundation) have now concluded that eating saturated fats (butter, lard, animal fats, full fat dairy, eggs, oily fish etc) does NOT contribute to more heart disease, diabetes, cholesterol etc. In fact they found that people who replaced fats with margarines, trans fats (in cakes, biscuits, ready meals etc) and sugary foods were those more likely to suffer from heart disease, diabetes, obesity and all sorts of diet-related health issues. Personally, I am ecstatic when I read articles such as the Time Magazine ‘Ending the war on fat’ (12/06/2014) or Dr Mosley’s similar fat-loving article in The Times (2/07/14). To recap the findings (and reiterate what I’ve been advising my clients for years!): replace spreads with unsalted butter, ghee and coconut oil (all great for cooking), eat full fat, unsweetened plain yoghurt, have oily fish at least three times a week, include great fats in your daily diet such as raw unsalted nuts and seeds and avocados, and keep your vegetable and nut oils plentiful (but unheated). Your heart, waistlines and tummies will thank you for it! Nathalie x Nathalie Sansonetti BA, MA, DNN, mFNTP is a fully qualified nutritional therapist practising in various locations in Hove. She can be contacted by email: nathalie@newleafnutrition.co.uk or on 07980 620010 for private consultations & painless and non-invasive food intolerance tests for adults and children, with immediate results.

Arts Award is... • A great way for children and young people to be inspired by and enjoy the arts • A framework for learning new skills and sharing them • An opportunity to develop creativity and leadership skills • A link between young people and creative arts professionals. Sussex Central YMCA is running the Bronze Arts Award in a week-long scheme during the summer holidays. Learners will be able to gain a nationally recognised qualification (D-G GCSE equivalent) in just four days. The programme is designed for 11-14 year olds but can be flexible depending on ability. The course will run from 9am-4pm, Tuesday 26th Aug – Friday 29th. Learners will need to attend all four days to be able to gain the qualification. There may be some homework expected to be done but this will be minimal and relevant to the course. Below is a brief breakdown of what will be happening each day. Tuesday Introductions/ice breakers What is art? Looking at areas young people can focus on for their project Trip to Brighton Library to research an arts hero of your choice Wednesday Visit to Brighton Museum Reviewing experience Thursday Taking part in two arts workshops Reviewing experience Friday Sharing your skills – learners will get to share the skills they learnt the previous day or share a skill they already have!
