Welcome to Poets Pages! Blimey !! I am sitting here writing this in my garden office and it is absolutely sweltering! However, such is the British weather that who knows what it will be like tomorrow and by the time you read this the chances of it still being this glorious are about the same as Leicester winning the Premiership again! Hmmm...wait a moment - much more unlikely than that! August is a funny month in the local magazine world with lots of people opting out due to holidays but even so we have done our best to bring you some kind of a publication for your enjoyment. Hope you find some things useful / interesting. Enjoy the weather...whatever it is!! An update on a great local community group...
An update from Stoneham Ba Stoneham Bakehouse has continued to grow over the last few months, with more places to buy our bread, and a series of successful workshops for those who want to learn how to bake their own loaves. We have also been lucky to receive funding for a number of projects, and some of these will be starting in the autumn. We’ve run a series of workshops on making rye breads, olive oil breads and general breadmaking skills. We’re in the process of drawing up a menu of workshops for the autumn months which will include both how to make bagels, as well as a festive breads workshop, so look out for the chance to learn some baking skills. Finally, as Stoneham Bakehouse gets bigger, with more of the community wanting to be involved, we’re looking to expand. Our current ‘itinerant bakers’ status, baking in my home, Pizzaface and The Hive, has been a great way to get started, but as we look to the future we need our own space. Somewhere where we can bring a bread oven to the heart of our community. We’ve been keeping our eyes open and ears to the

Let’s get Stoneham Bakehouse into the community and sharing the process of baking with everyone. info@stonehambakehouse.org.uk @stonehambake facebook.com/stonehambakehouse 07786 927110 The Hive's menu still includes our bread and we are also stocked at Curiosity Kitchen & Deli on Richardson Road. You can also buy bread for your own table in the following ways: • Order bread during the week and collect it from The Hive on Friday afternoons and alternate Saturday lunchtimes. • Buy bread at the Hove Farmers' Market on the third Saturday of each month from 10-2pm. Portland Road This photo was kindly provided by Eileen Odom of Westbourne Street. It was taken in the 1920s, with Portland Road and St Peter’s Church in the background, and shows her father Ernie Pickett and great-uncle Joe working in their market garden where they also kept goats and pigs. At that time, much of the Portland Road area was fields and market gardens.

Memories of days gone by in Poets Corner...
Poets Person – Bill Lenton Bill Lenton grew up at 2 Arthur Street in the 1960s and 70s. He is now a plumber and has many customers in Poets Corner. What memories do you have of Poets Corner? My parents and grandparents all lived in Arthur Street. My mum’s dad was an electrician on the railway. When the steam trains were electrified, he didn’t understand the technology so he got electrocuted and died on the rails. We used to play in Stoneham Park. My mum would sit with my wife’s mum and chat. (My wife lived in Shirley Street.) There was a great big marble water fountain with lead cups on chains. After school we played football with the kids from Aldrington School, using the trees as goalposts. We would go round the corner to the sweet shop and get a Zoom and a Jamboree Bag. There were two sweet shops, both called Trotts. The shopkeeper would have a “penny shoe box” and you could get eight sweets for a penny. As we got older, we would go to Tammy’s Fish and Chip Bar, behind Stoneham Park, and have a penny’s worth of scratchings and a bag of chips.

A lot of the streets had blocks of wood underneath the tarmac. The kids would steal the wood to take home for the fire. The mortuary was around the corner and had a glass roof. We used to break in there. Once, we got onto the glass roof, looked down and didn’t like what we saw, so we never went back again. What changes have you noticed over the years? It used to be a working class area – nobody owned their own homes. It has gone upmarket now. There used to be a fish man and a rag-and-bone man, and a flower lady used to come around with a pram full of flowers. We always used to think she was poor, and it turned out she lived up Woodland Drive! Where did you go to school? I went to Portland Road Infants and Juniors (now West Hove). Mr Robinson was our headmaster. We played football for the school team. At the end of the year, the boys’ football team would play the girls’ netball team at netball. We had no idea how to play netball and the girls would end up on the floor! Where are you living now? I am in Sompting now. Bill Lenton

Bungard teamed up with experienced bereavement counsellor, Eve Miller...
Forward Thinking Funeral Director Improves Aftercare Service Bungard funeral directors in Hove are improving their free aftercare service for customers in a bid to offer much needed practical and emotional support to people who have recently been bereaved. Bungards have teamed up with experienced bereavement counsellor, Eve Miller, to offer two free counselling sessions. Eve has been practising as a counsellor in Hove for over 10 years and was previously an accredited bereavement counsellor for Cruse Bereavement Care and helped launch the aftercare service. In addition to offering emotional support Bungards have also teamed up with Home & Company, a local home help organisation, to offer practical help in the home. Home & Company will provide up to four free hours of their service and can provide help with shopping, cooking, laundry and any other help around the house that is needed. “At Bungards Funeral Directors we believe that we have an important responsibility to care for our families, not just by offering support during the funeral, but also providing aftercare in the difficult

days, weeks and months that follow,” says Richard Whittle, Managing Director. A recent report by the National Council for Palliative Care said that 75% of people who have been bereaved said they didn’t get the support they needed. After the inevitable busy period immediately following someone’s death it can be particularly lonely and difficult to get back to doing the things you did. By offering aftercare in the form of counselling and practical home help, Bungards hope to help with the grieving and healing process. Bungards, 90 Sackville Road Tel 01273 820018

Update about Stoneham Park...
New Murals in Stoneham Park You may have seen two new murals in Stoneham Park, commissioned by The Hive with the support of the council. They have been painted by Waleska Nomura, a Brazilian painter who moved to Brighton in 2007. She and her brother have painted another mural at Hove Junior School in School Road, after Lara from The Hive put them in contact. Waleska is completely selftaught. She started her art career painting traditional graffiti letters on the streets of São Paulo and later moved from the streets onto canvas, painting mainly figurative works to begin with. As her work developed so did her use of experimenting with different materials and mediums. Heavy acrylic paint combines with collage and found objects to create her own unique mix and style. Her more recent works have taken on a new threedimensional appearance as modelling clay is added to her list of mediums.

A local update from the West Hove Forum...
News from the West Hove Forum Healthy Neighbourhood Fund At our meeting in July, many of the local groups who have received Healthy Neighbourhood Fund grants came to tell us about the wonderful projects they have been working on. These groups included the Friends of Wish Park, Friends of Stoneham Park, Purple People Kitchen, Stoneham Bakehouse, Off The Fence and the Secret Garden Group. Hove Business Association Hove Business Association is dedicated to improving the local economy. It has been going since 1929, but no longer has enough committee members and is holding a Special General Meeting on 8th August to decide whether to disband. The Hove Business Partnership will be unaffected. For further information, visit www.hovebiz.com. Wish Park Surgery Wish Park Surgery has had to cap its list to new patients (unless they are members of families al-ready registered), to ensure patient safety following a rapid increase in the list size. There are about 7,000 patients on the list, and three full time GPs at the surgery. The prac-

tice is recruiting to in-crease the clinical capacity at the surgery and expects to reopen the list in the autumn. The lack of access and parking for unwell and disabled patients has been taken up with the council by the two Wish ward councillors. Off The Fence The Portland Road-based charity Off The Fence work in three areas: emergency outreach to those living on the streets and a homeless centre, Antifreeze, which provides emotional and practical assistance for exiting homelessness; support for vulnerable women at Gateway women’s centre; and a Schools & Youth programme. Through Antifreeze, the charity are engaging with an increasing number of homeless individuals. At present, there is a desperate need for men’s underwear – boxer shorts and socks. If you can help, email: Antifreeze@offthefence.org.uk or phone 01273 933885. Off The Fence are also looking for a larger building for their Gateway women’s work, currently based in Station Road. If you have any suggestions or know of any potential building options, please contact : office@offthefence.org.uk. Ice cream vans outside schools Councillors Garry Peltzer Dunn and Robert Nemeth are concerned about the danger from queues for ice cream vans obstructing the pavement outside Hove Junior School in School Road and other schools. This results in children being forced out into the road. Some activities in the local area...
Hove Station Forum – Neighbourhood Plan Update The preparation of the Neighbourhood Development Plan has really gathered momentum in recent months. We exhibited our draft proposals at our 5th Have Your Say Day on Sunday July 3rd. Some 70 local residents participated and were able to question our guest speaker Liz Hobden, who is the senior planning officer responsible for the council’s support for our NDP. A lively discussion agreed that we need to have informal workshops on traffic and parking and to develop the proposals for the area west of Sackville Road. These will build on the work of our Stoneham Neighbourhood Planning Group, by using a research report prepared by MSc students from the Brighton University School of Planning. High on the agenda will be the redevelopment of the School Road area which has recently started and is a key issue for the NDP. The regeneration of the Hove Station Quarter has begun with the demolition of the derelict factory on the corner of Newtown Road and Goldstone Lane to make way for Hyde’s construction of 65 new homes over the next 18 months. Under pressure from our petition and objections from the landowner the council have withdrawn their proposal to use the former Coal Yard site for waste

management. This paves the way for the construction of 600-700 homes on the combined sites of the Sackville Trading Estate and the Coal Yard. Dick Pennifold by Ronald Horton © Royal Pavilion & Museums, Brighton & Hove
As children we are often asked what we would like to do or be when we grow up, and we try to picture ourselves in our adult lives. This family-friendly display at Hove Museum explores how members of one profession, artists, see others at work; the works on show date from the 17th to the 20th centuries and all come from the city’s Fine Art Collection. The painting shown here is by Ronald Horton (19021981) who from 1944 to 1966 headed the Art Teacher Training Department at Brighton College of Art. It features Dick Pennifold, who was imprisoned as a conscientious objector during the First World War. 10am-5pm, daily except Wednesdays (Sundays 2-5pm)

News from the sea front...
A new way to buy local food at The Big Beach Café The Food Assembly, a method of buying and selling food which supports local producers and bypasses supermarkets, is coming to The Big Beach Café at Hove Lagoon. The new concept in selling local food directly to local people may replace part of your weekly family shop in a healthier and more community-driven way. Every week Food Assembly customers can order food online from local food producers before picking it up at The Big Beach Café. By ordering online, food producers know exactly how much to bring so there is no food waste their end. All the food comes from within the average distance of 28 miles. Brighton & Hove’s Food Assembly organiser, Sophia Harvey, explains: “Having a local Food Assembly offers us the opportunity to engage with the people producing our food.” Dan Stockland, who runs the Big Beach Café, says: “I’m excited to work with local produce and to support our food producers; we’re all about local here.” Weekly shoppers choose from unique local products, such as artisan bread from Infinity Foods Bakery and honey from Brambletye Farm. The Hove Food Assembly
online is now open so you can sign up, become a member, and fill your basket with fresh food. The first market launches on 30th July and they will be at the Big Beach Café (10.30am-12.30pm) every Saturday after that. If you’re a food producer and are interested in joining the Hove Food Assembly or the soon to be launched Brighton Food Assembly, we’d love to hear from you. You can contact: brightonhovefoodie@gmail.com. You can also start your own local food community! Contact: support@foodassembly.com, and check out: www.foodassembly.com
