Welcome to Poets Pages... Contents It’s holiday time for many of us in August, so we hope you have plenty of time to read your copy of Poets Pages. This month we feature another of the two new councillors for Westbourne ward, Carmen Appich, who tells us a bit more about herself. We hear from Linda Lai of Asiana on Portland Road and from local resident Michael Jessopp who is soon to take on The Saharan Challenge for Martlets hospice. The Friends of Stoneham Park report back on June’s fabulous Midsummer Fair and we have an update on the proposed redevelopment of the Sackville Trading Estate. Have a relaxing August! A local update…

News from the Friends of Stoneham Park So, another annual Midsummer Fair (on 23 June) has been and gone. And what a fabulous day out it was! Who can forget Jivin’ Jim Dandy spinning his all-time 78s records? Or the bands Celtic Shore and Cadillac Country playing their toe-tapping folk music? Or the folksy line dancing after lunch? And, speaking of lunch, who didn’t try the wood-fired pizza or the samosas, hot dogs and burgers? Or the delicious old-fashioned ice cream? Who won’t have memories of the delight on children’s faces as they braved the cups and saucers ride or clambered through the inflatable obstacle course? And who could fail to be impressed by the Pimm’s bar, the craft beer tent and the burger kitchen that we, the Friends of Stoneham Park, set up? All in all, it was a fabulous day that was made possible only because of the hard work of a very small number of people. The amount of preparation in getting these events up and running is immense. On the day itself, it was all hands on deck to get stall holders in place, to put up tents and gazebos, make sure all the games and rides are safely staffed and then - the worst bit - tidying up afterwards. I was in the park three hours after the event ended, putting everything away, and felt completely exhausted!

These events really do depend on helpers and people prepared to give up their time for free and for the good of the local community. We were hoping to put on an outdoor cinema and hold a pet show but these things must wait until we can be sure they are viable. But a band of helpers were on hand, and I want to pay tribute to Cllrs Robert Nemeth and Garry Peltzer Dunn, Nina Bishop and the Hangleton & Knoll Project, Lola, Sophie, two Chrises, Simon, John, Karen, Mike, Sue and Liz plus FOSP committee stalwarts Emma, Jane, Michelle and David plus Caroline who did so much of the hard work as our events co-ordinator. The only real downside was that the park seemed to be quieter than last year. But on sunny Saturdays since the fair the park has been almost deserted, so we certainly did bring in the crowds. People also seem to be spending less, and this was confirmed by some stallholders at other events. This is a pity, but with storm clouds gathering about us, maybe this is no real surprise. An interview with a new local councillor...

Meet Westbourne Councillor Carmen Appich Carmen Appich was elected in May as a Labour councillor for Westbourne. Do you live in West Hove? I live just around the corner in Central Hove. Tell us about your background... I’m a qualified public sector accountant. I worked in local government for more than 20 years, then continued in public service by working in further education, and am currently working 1 day a week for East Sussex Credit Union. Once a replacement for my credit union work has arrived, I will aim to be a full time councillor. I am married, and have an adult daughter who lives in London. The whole family work or have worked in public service. I’m vegetarian and I don’t drive so hopefully my ecological footprint is smaller than most, though it could no doubt be improved! What made you want to become a councillor? I’m getting a pension from local government and thought it was time to give something back to the community. Given my skills and experience I thought standing for the Council would be the right thing to do. What do you hope to achieve in the Westbourne area? I’m passionate about improving the environment, particularly the very tired and run down looking western seafront, for our residents and visitors to enjoy.

also very exciting, and I hope to make a difference in this crucial area of work. What are your interests outside politics? I like to listen to live music. I practise hot yoga, and love cycling and walking. How can we contact you?

I hope to improve community engagement with the local authority. I am holding regular surgeries and I am also available to meet residents outside those times. I enjoy the varied questions and issues raised by residents, and hope to help resolve many problems over the next 4 years.

Local news...

Sackville Trading Estate plans rejected... On 10th July, Brighton & Hove City Council’s Planning Committee rejected plans by Moda Living to redevelop the former retail park and coal yard on the east side of Sackville Road, to the north of the railway line. Moda proposed to build 581 homes for private rent, 10 live/work units, and a care community of 260 homes for the elderly on the Sackville Trading Estate and goods yard site, as well as office accommodation, retail floorspace and community facilities including a health and wellbeing centre. The buildings would range from 2 to 15 storeys. The council’s planning officer recommended that permission for the scheme should be granted, although his report said that daylight and sunlight provision in the retirement village was expected to be poor. The report also acknowledged concerns about the heritage impact, but said: “..Considering the significant public benefits of the scheme that will accrue with the redevelopment of the site, the overall design, scale and appearance of the scheme and its impact on the character of the surrounding area is considered acceptable and any concern is not considered so significant as to warrant refusal.”

185 objections were received by the council, as well as 16 letters of support. Concerns raised included height, density, design, overshadowing and overlooking, noise, traffic congestion and parking pressure, as well as pressure on public transport and local infrastructure. The Hove Station Neighbourhood Forum supported the application, subject to the provision of more affordable housing and the resolution of parking and traffic movement issues. A spokesperson for residents of the Artists’ Corner area to the west of the site told the committee that they were strongly united against the application due to concerns over parking and traffic. Goldsmid ward councillor Jackie O’Quinn also spoke against the application. She said that the height of some of the blocks was overwhelming. She thought the development was far too dense and would create traffic problems leading to gridlock. In response to questioning from councillors, a spokesman for the applicants said that all new homes would first be offered to tenants on the local housing list. A one-bedroom flat would cost £1,250 per month to rent. Councillors on the committee were concerned about the amount of affordable housing and about access from Sackville Road, as well as the height and density of the scheme. Cllr Phelim Mac Cafferty was particularly concerned about the lack of daylight some of the retirement homes would receive and asked the developers to come back with a better scheme. The councillors voted eight to two against the proposal.

Good luck to Michael Jessopp, who is raising money for Martlets...

Poets Corner resident takes on The Saharan Challenge... Michael Jessopp is 64 and has lived in Linton Road for 27 years with his wife Linda and four-year-old Golden Retriever Cloughy. He has two children, Alice 24 years and Cameron 20. In October this year he will be taking on The Saharan Challenge of running two marathons in two days to raise money for Martlets hospice. Tell us more about The Saharan Challenge...

How is the training going? The training is going well; having started over 10 months ago I am averaging 8-10 miles a day jogging and walking. The majority of my long distance training has been on the South Downs where I have been up to 20 miles. It’s also good exercise for my dog Cloughy!!!

The Saharan Challenge comprises two marathon distances in two days in Morocco across the UNESCO heritage site Draa Valley, running across baked rocky trails, through Moroccan villages and palmeries and Nakhla dunes of the Saharan desert. I will be taking on this challenge with my son-in-law Christie Matthews.

Have you run a marathon before?

Why did you decide to take on this challenge? I like a challenge and, having competed in various events in the past, I decided that retirement was not for me and this is certainly a most demanding challenge. For the event our nominated sponsor is The Martlets who I am sure most of your readers will have heard about. The Martlets is a charity that cares for people living through a terminal illness in and around Brighton and Hove. They also provide practical care and support when it matters most.

Yes, I have competed in two half marathons and the Brighton Marathon in 2016; my son-in-law Christie is more experienced having competed in six marathons. We both completed the London to Brighton Challenge in 2017 from Richmond in London to Brighton Racecourse in 22 hours. How can people sponsor you? By donating to the Just Giving website below. Please donate, however small an amount it will go towards making a difference. https://justgiving.com/fundraising/michael-jessopp1

A poem by a Poets Corner resident...

Our Black and White Films... Premiered in a better age on the silver screen And still giving pleasure as when first seen Before Technicolor bled garish and stereophonic sound Put out the dialogue which got too loud There were our beloved films, the enduring and best, Now enjoyed on our local channel, The Latest. We’re treated to clipped enunciation, put on cockney clang The suaveness of Dennis Price, the antics of the Crazy Gang. Justice was done when the Galloping Major won his great race Shock shown when Big Ben was hit by hubcaps from outer space The poignancy of unlikely pairing, brash and demure, The Rattle of a Simple Man and the Ghost and Mrs Muir The Ghost and Mrs Muir (1947) Struck by the English loveliness of Janette Scott Doors opened and shut at the frantic farce of Dry Rot, And caught the rotten swine in Jigsaw John Laurie helped carry in Whisky Galore Not much was given away, nothing went on show And across the pond wit snapped between Hope and Lamour. And we didn’t know we weren’t in the know. The black and white didn’t offend or cause a stir. We were safe when conductresses were on buses then Just kept us happy, glad we knew where we were. And were reminded ‘Not to Talk to Strange Men’ Jack Warner extended the arm of the law

Local history from Rachel Bridgeman...

250th anniversary of the birth of Napoleon Bonaparte “The triumph, and the vanity, The rapture of the strife— The earthquake-voice of Victory, To thee the breath of life;” (from Ode to Napoleon Buonaparte by Lord Byron) 15th August 2019 marks 250 years since the birth of the great French military and political leader, Napoleon Bonaparte - a man who made a deep mark on the area in which we live. Between 1793 and 1815 war raged across Europe and beyond, with only the briefest of pauses in the battles between France and Britain. It was during this tumultuous period that Byron, Shelley, Coleridge, Wordsworth and Keats began a literary movement known as Romanticism. What is often forgotten is that they were the war poets of their era: their work as much a response to war as a reaction against industrialisation. Wordsworth’s “With such vast hoards of hidden carnage near, /And horror breathing from the silent ground!” is a far cry from “I wandered lonely as a cloud.” And whilst fear of invasion was downplayed by the satirical mocking of Napoleon, inhabitants of old Hove village lived with the truly petrifying possibility that his troops might land here at any moment. A not unfounded fear, resulting in the area we inhabit becoming the destination for thousands of militia soldiers and cavalry; the location of a huge military encampment of 15,000 soldiers at Goldstone Bottom (Hove Park) every summer for 10 years; the venue for military manoeuvres and sham battles; the witness to blood-curdling punishments and executions; the inspiration for some of the greatest literature in the

Napoleon Crossing the Alps by Jacques-Louis David

English language; and the home and final resting place of men who fought on both sides of the most brutal and pivotal battles. To learn more about the history of Hove during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, join a guided historical walking tour led by a local historian and tour guide. A shop which opened at the beginning of this year on Portland Road...

Local store...Asiana in Portland Road Asiana is a family-run Chinese grocery shop at 117 Portland Road, which opened in January. You can also buy hot dim sum, which are Chinese dumplings with various fillings. Owner Linda Lai tells us more... Why did you decide to open Asiana? I love cooking, especially my home food dim sum. I would explain dim sum is a kind of food of love, which is prepared as small bite-size portions of food served in small steamer baskets or on a small plate. Traditionally the members of a family get together to make dumplings dim sum, or for friends and family gatherings. Opening Asiana, it is my ambition to get more people to try and know more about dim sum foods. What kind of food can we buy? You could buy all Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Thai food ingredients, sweets, snacks, fruits and vegetables, groceries, frozen dumplings and dim sum, sake and plum wines, even Asian ice cream, mochi… Our staff would give the best advice on how to cook with all our Asian ingredients. We also sell oriental decorations, accessories, gifts, tableware…. How is it going so far? It is going very well and better than I expected. We received lots of good feedback, which gives us encouragement to bring more to Asiana. Unfortunately, we had a break-in recently. Four shops have had break-ins along Portland Road within three months… Chris Henry (office manager for MP Peter Kyle and Westbourne councillor) reported that Detective Superintendent Riley has informed the Prevention Team of these worries, to ensure that there is an increase in high visibility patrols in the area to engage with local residents and business. What is your most popular product? Our most popular product of course is our steamed dim sum. We have a happy hour at 5pm every day for happy dim sum. All dim sum are sold at a reduced price from 25p for a dumpling, so that all our dim sum are freshly cooked every morning. Asiana is at 117 Portland Road and is open from 10am to 6pm.
