The second in a series of recipes for children...
Mince Pies for Christmas!! Jess is a teacher from Cookery Doodle Doo, who organise children’s cookery classes and parties across the UK. With lessons on everything from edible Flowerpot Cheesecakes to healthy homecooked meals, there is always a fun new activity for the children to get stuck into.
Mince Pies You will need... 60g cold butter 90g plain flour 25g golden caster sugar 70g mincemeat 1 small egg Pinch of salt How do I make that? 1. 2. 3.
4.
Pre-heat the oven to 200C. Put the flour and butter into a mixing bowl and, using your hands, mix together until it resembles a breadcrumb-like texture. Add the sugar and a pinch of salt and combine the mixture into dough.
WAKE UP TO A WOOD BURNER!
Knead the dough for a few minutes then roll out onto a floured surface. 5. Cut 7 circles out of the dough; place onto your baking tray. 6. Add a spoonful of mincemeat to each one. 7. Cut out 7 smaller circles to put on top 8. of the pies. 9. Beat your egg in a small bowl and 10. brush it onto the top of each pie. 11. Bake for 20 minutes. 12. Enjoy! Jess runs preschool and afterschool classes at Pelican on Portland, a great new café on Portland Road. The classes are suitable for fussy eaters and messy bakers alike and, after preparing the food, parents get a chance to relax in the café as the food cooks and the children use the playroom.
If you have an open fire, as much as 80% of the heat goes straight up the chimney. With a wood burning stove you’ll benefit from at least three times more heat. So you’ll just be burning wood - the original carbon neutral fuel - not money. Be part of the renewable revolution. Energy Wake Up specialises in the supply and installation of energy-efficient wood burning stoves. From consultation to installation.
Preschool classes (ages 2½ to 4) run on Mondays from 10-11.30am and 1-2.30pm, Tuesdays 10-11.30am. Classes are £7 per child or £12 for two siblings, including a recipe card to take away. Reductions apply for people who book a half term course. Afterschool club (age 3-10; school aged children can be left during the food preparation) runs on Mondays from 3.30-5pm. Classes are booked as half termly courses at £7 per child per lesson. Children can try a paid taster class before committing.

Suggested top line: An appeal for support for young people at risk of becoming homeless...
Brighton & Hove Supported Lodgings Do you live in Brighton & Hove or the surrounding areas? Could you make a difference to a young person’s life in your own home? Brighton & Hove Supported Lodgings is looking for individuals or families to provide lodgings and support for vulnerable young people aged 16 to 21. All you need is a spare room and some free time to offer advice and support in your own home. Could you support a young person who is at risk of becoming homeless? This is a new project, run by Barnardo’s but where YOU make the difference. The young people will need help with basic skills such as budgeting, cooking and shopping. They may also need help in gaining personal or social skills, training or employment. Every young person will also have the support of a key worker to assist them to achieve their full potential and move forward. A host can make a huge difference to the life of a vulnerable young person. As a host you will benefit from 24/7 assistance and a dedicated key worker. Barnardo’s staff will need to carry out a thorough assessment, DBS (criminal record) and reference checks. Showtime Productions & Music Theatre 2000 present

A traditional, magical, musical family Pantomime
Successful hosts then access a comprehensive training programme, as well as receiving an allowance of £150 per week for providing lodgings and support for the young person. Supported Lodgings provides young people with a different option when faced with nowhere to go. It is an opportunity to provide a warm, welcoming home environment and a chance for a young person to get their life back on track. Similar projects have been established around the country and proved very successful, particularly in helping young people to gain skills, education or work experience. Barnardo’s can draw upon experience gained from running some of these projects and can provide expertise, advice and resources for hosts. Barnardo’s have a long history of helping the most vulnerable children and young people in society. Would you like to play a part in helping someone here in Brighton & Hove? Are you interested?

An appeal for volunteers to teach carers new skills...
Carers Reablement Service There are more than 24,000 carers in Brighton – around 9% of the city’s population. One in five of them do more than 50 hours of unpaid care work every week. The Carers Centre for Brighton and Hove provides information, support and advocacy to carers. We are starting a new project that will support carers to learn new skills or achieve other goals. The Carers Reablement Service is a pilot scheme designed to support carers to achieve positive changes in their lives. This will be done with the assistance of volunteers, who will help the carer to reach a clearly-defined outcome in a period of up to ten weeks. These outcomes will aim to improve the wellbeing of the carer in some way. Examples of these ten-week goals may include learning to use a computer, starting going to the gym, drawing up and beginning a weight-loss plan, or acquiring basic cooking or car repair skills. It could also involve taking up a new hobby, or learning a creative skill. Some carers have expressed an interest in dancing, learning a new musical instrument, or taking up painting, drawing, or creative writing. The service is also currently looking at offering carers sessions with a life coach, who will sup-
port them to consider what parts of their life could use work or improvement, and how to achieve that. Once the project has officially opened, then carers can be referred by a caseworker to the service. They will discuss their needs with the volunteer co-ordinator, who runs the project, and will then be matched with a volunteer who can support them. The Carers Centre is therefore keen to recruit as many volunteers as possible, so that we can offer as wide a range of skills and services as possible with this project. People often seem to worry that they don’t have any skills, or that they’re not good enough at the skills they do have. In this case, they need not worry. If someone can offer to pass on the basics of a certain skill or craft, then that in itself is a fantastic contribution – especially since they’ll only have ten weeks with each carer anyway! If you are interested in volunteering, please contact the Carers Centre on 01273 746222 and ask for Daniel, or email him directly on Daniel.eichner@thecarerscentre.org .

Brought to you by locally based nutritionist Nathalie Sansonetti
Nathalie’s Monthly Health TIP
Ouch...Christmas! Here we go again - the time for over-indulging in just about everything is almost upon us. So…how will you enjoy the festivities without the guilt (and the bulges)? I’m often asked whether I ever allow myself a little treat. “Mais bien sur!” What would my life be like if I didn’t appreciate the little gems of this world? In fact, my BIG tip to avoid cravings and bingeing is to actually eat a little junk regularly, so you’re less likely to want to over-do it. Constant deprivation and dieting are only going to cause you stress and a feeling that certain foods are ‘bad’, which often will make you want to eat it even more! Guilt will not only spoil the pleasure of eating that treat, it will also make digestion more difficult. So cut yourself some slack by adopting the 80/20 ‘rule’: try and eat well 80% of the time and allow yourself to indulge a little - 20% of the time. In practice, it’s all about balance, so try to give your body a break if you’ve had a few too many drinks or chocolates one day, by having a ‘good’ day with no alcohol, eating lighter, or even fasting
once a week if you’re feeling brave. Increasing exercise is another way to counter the indulgent food and drink of the previous day, and will replace guilty feelings with ‘feel good’ hormones. Have a healthy, happy holiday!
